- RiotActing, on 10/12/2007, -31/+3Just hope we dont have to pay each time we download the same thing... 10 gigs is pretty small...
- Zero2aHero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26No, you don't... once you pay for something you can download it as many times as you want. If you buy the HD version of something, you can also download the SD version.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -33/+4All I need now is a 360, don't want one though.
- netdroid9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Even the Microsoft haters shouldn't be able to find anything wrong with that.
- Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1On a recent Major Nelson podcast...
It was said that TV shows with HD and SD versions, were only charging users for the HD version. Hopefully this is still true today...
But the reason they said they are charging for the HD version is because "it takes a little more bandwidth to push the HD content".
But they allow you to download as many times as you want as long as you bought it! So what is their concern about charging for an extra couple hundred MB's download, when you could download the same file over and over forever?
...Just found that odd and wanted to point it out. - danc4498, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Zero2aHero
That goes for everything but movies. With the movies you only get 24 hours from the time you start watching it, then you'll have to pay again. - sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does anyone know if the videos will be able to stream at all? Can you watch while it's downloading? Or will you need to download the entire movie and then watch?
- sachmul, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Can't wait to download ATHF...
- ucbrave92, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3damn, it's november 22 and no movies yet. are they going to wait until midnight on the west coast?
- alex.will, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Usually they release stuff at 1AM PST on Wednesdays.
- marosnax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5consdiering Microsoft is based on the west cost then yes. In fact they always wait for +008 GMT or midnight on the west.
- ucbrave92, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4well i guess i am staying up late! 1 hour and 19 minutes to go, guess I will play GoW a little more.
since bellsouth had an outage the other day and they came and worked on the lines in my neighborhood i have been getting ~10-12Mbps download speeds. this is going to be great for downloading some hd action.
- truegodofwar, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1Or you could NOT give microsoft money...http://www.yourtvlinks.com/movies.html
- ucbrave92, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18yeah, thats a great idea! watch low res google video crap when I can pay the same it would costs me to rent a movie at blockbuster and watch an HD movie on my 46" 1080p w/ a 5.1 surround sound system.
- CriticalImpact, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0And then run out of bandwidth. You know it may be damn easy for you to download gigabytes of movies without running out of bandwidth but here in Australia 30GB on cable costs a ***** load.
I'd get a 360 or PS3 if i could download more but my internet cap is so ***** small I cant download ***** without being capped - Arkz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6so...move to an isp thats not *****...
- daza, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4There are no "not *****" ISPs in Australia. 1.5Mbit/256kbit with 20GB monthly downloads is $60.00/M. That's the cheapest plan around too.
- Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@daza:
I think it's fair to say... "Sucks to be you"
Just pray you don't ever move to Africa... Or you'll be begging for your crappy plan you have now.
- ucbrave92, on 10/12/2007, -1/+41 HOUR TO GO!
This is like Christmas early :) - drakino, on 10/12/2007, -10/+8Tomorrow more consumers can be locked into more DRM content! Woohoo! After Microsoft just threw away all their "Plays For Sure" stuff in favor of the different and incompatible Zune DRM, I don't trust them for any digital media now.
And the 360 stuff doesn't even work with any of the rest of the Microsoft media world. That content is firmly stuck on the 360, it can't move to another Media Center or Extender, it can't move to the Zune, and it definitely can't move to a 3rd party media player like Archos or iPod.
While I like the XBox Marketplace for demos and game related things, I hope the movies and TV shows part just burns down quickly, before too many consumers are sucked into this system.- ucbrave92, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16No, I hope this stuff lasts and takes off. I and many others I know DON'T buy movies and we really don't want to. I like to watch a movie once, sometimes twice but that's really it. I am looking foward to being able to RENT HD movies without leaving home, that's the big thing about all of this. I hope it really starts off like iTunes, a small initial offering that really takes off because people use it.
- duckfighter, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Stop whining about DRM. Without it these things would be impossible. The only people complaining are those not wanting to pay for it.
I for one welcome that feature, and i am sure i will use it frequently. - drog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3And if it does take off I am sure that there will still be some DRM but you will eventually be able to play your movie on your zune or pc, or both. For the time being they need as many content producers as they can get.
- angelp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@drakino - None of that is a problem if you plan on renting only...which is what I'm going to do with the movies.
- drakino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As far as the rental aspect, fine. Though 6 gigs is a bit much for a rental, hopefully the average speed of broadband will go up soon.
DRM sucks on content you want to keep. You have no control, and if MS moves on to something else and doesn't keep it up, you get screwed. What happens in five years when you move to the next XBox and your content has to stay on your older box? What happens when 360s aren't made anymore and yours breaks? While VHS tapes are pretty much dead now, I can at least still play them, and will likely be able to play DVDs on optical drives for many years to come.
Well, for those investing in the TV shows enjoy the lockin. I'll keep buying DVDs that I can watch on many devices.
"Stop whining about DRM. Without it these things would be impossible. The only people complaining are those not wanting to pay for it. "
Thats a horribly broad and wrong statement there. Most of the people complaining about it realize that DRM basically means the content providers can make you take it up the ass. Theres no magic kill switch on my DVDs, VHS tapes or CDs, but there is in every single DRM file you decide to rent. With DRM, there is no true buying of the right to watch the content.
- gage006, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Countdown for Sony to launch this service in 5..4...3...2...1...
- gxcdesign, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I want some HD movies >
- meokazi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i want to watch CSI in HD!
- smb3d, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I'm not sure what the pricing is going to be, but for around ten extra dollars a month you can upgrade your Cable or Directv to HD and get all the HD you want.
- ErrorOfRuto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You could also just put an antenna up on your roof and watch it in HD for free.
- drog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6If this takes off then the whole blu-ray vs hd-dvd thing will be moot.
- adam84a, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2that's kind of why I thought it was odd that Microsoft announced this days before releasing the HD-DVD drive. It seems as though they actually wanted to do something right for their users for once, kind of like "before you go out and drop $200 to play HD DVD, you may want to know about this". I know it definately impacted my decision to get one, I was going to until this announcement.
- ucbrave92, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yeah i agree. it is kind of odd that ms does something like this for their customers. i for one am very glad they did as i had thought about getting an hd-dvd drive but really there isn't much selection movie wise for hd-dvd yet to make it really viable. also, hard media is almost dead, on demand is the future of entertainment. now we just need faster broadband speeds. where's my fiber i payed for?
- HeatVision, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The quality for the HD stuff is 720p, while Blu-Ray and HD-DVD is at 1080p. Probably wouldn't notice a difference on anything smaller than a 42" TV, but there is a difference.
- ddosterschill, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14completely unrelated to article and discussion, but i just dugg several comments and this article multiple times simply by clicking rapidly! 20+ diggs for one comment!

- pauleku, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7this would be good news if most 360 hard drives were not full already.
- saether, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5just cleared mine out. Amazing what happens when I rm all those old demos!
- ucbrave92, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15 minutes
- brindon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2What is the point of HD on TVs without true HDMI or DVI connectors? I just don't understand it. I've hooked up my TV with "hd" component cables and real HDMI cables and there is no comparison - digital is the way to go.
So what is the big deal about the 360's "hd" (ahem) over component?- ucbrave92, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4i think the deal with hdmi hd vs component hd really depends on the tv. on my newer 46" samsung i can't tell the difference between hdmi and component when i hook up my directv, but on my older 50" pioneer the difference is dramatic. anybody have any input regarding this?
- joeydoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You would find it even harder to tell the difference if you used the VGA cable.
1920X1080/60Hz on my 24 inch monitor.....unless you get a magnifying glass and plant your head against the screen, the image quality looks no different than DVI from a PC.
- minuteZERO, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4sounds like the design of your tv. if you read around, there have been some reviews where component actually looks better than DVI/HDMI. also, probably just that tv. i'm running component, and it's incredibly clear.
- Barryke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If component is ugly, its only because it has to be rescaled to a different resolution. (525 or 720>1080)
The component or svideo 'noise' itself is to low to detect with the naked eye at all.
If anyone says different, they should get a refund or move some adapters away from the signalcable.
Ontopic; PAL is better than NTSC when watching cable TV.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PAL#PAL_vs_NTSC Also less noise.
Whats the whole use of using hd unless you want a videowall 2 meters in front of you?
- Barryke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If component is ugly, its only because it has to be rescaled to a different resolution. (525 or 720>1080)
- ucbrave92, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hmmm i guess it is going to be 1 am PST. another hour :(
- Nysul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just ordered a premium 360 from dell for $340 with free shipping and I was wondering if I would regret it, and now my fears are unfounded. If they put new releases on here, goodbye blockbuster. I will never have a reason to go into that dump of a movie bin again (yes, I know about netflix, but that doesn't really fit my spontaneous movie moods). Now I also don't have to worry about getting an HD or blu-ray player.
They should also allow you to purchase 720p movies for $9-12 or so, and re-download them any time you want.- Barryke, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1"They should also allow you to purchase 720p movies for $9-12 or so, and re-download them any time you want."
Why would they? (the 'redownload' part) Its Microsoft!! - Nysul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Barryke
1) Precedent (you can redownload demos, and the tv shows)
2) limited space on the hard drive (it would be less of an issue if it came with 320 gigs) - Brookrtm07, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Unfortunately, It wouldn't take more than an hour to go to a local video store. 5GB HD movies will take me 3 days or more to download. I might not have the fastest broadband, but the size of these downloads are enough to put me off. Was surprised that my Superman Returns Demo took less than 6 hours, though! :)
- Barryke, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1"They should also allow you to purchase 720p movies for $9-12 or so, and re-download them any time you want."
- hospadam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think I'm just a subscription service junkie.
I've said this all along with iTunes, but I really want a flat-fee subscription service for this kind of thing.
Let me say this... I don't think I would spend $20-$30 per month if I have to buy things individually, but, I'm pretty sure I would pay that flat fee if I could have access to unlimited HD movies or something like that. But, the price is going to have to be really low to get me to stop using netflix and keeping the discs as long as I want.
I'll say this. I want this to be really, really good. But, I'm just not sure it's going to be cheap enough to sway me over.
Side note... why can't I put these on my Zune, or watch on my Computer, or put them on my Windows Mobile phone? No one else has that many broad products... why doesn't Microsoft just flex it's muscles a little bit? No one could compete with them on that big of a level...even Sony! - roundntubby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0it looks pretty cool, i guess pretty soon Microsoft will try to push for a complete entertainment solution for the living room. I guess the foundation is already there with the xbox360 and there wireless networking with the home computers. plus you can already save your DVDs and music files on to the xbox.
- shiftt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1apple will do it better
anyway, wanna go get burgers at that place on kings highway?
- shiftt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1apple will do it better
- Brookrtm07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It is 3:11am in Central Time. Anyone have a clue when this stuff is starting at XBL?
- ucbrave92, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i am thinking the same thing, i stayed up just so i could check this stuff out before i take off in the morning for the holidays and have to leave the ol' xbox at home. i hope they get it up and running soon.
- seansshack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3bout time they had some content up there. Considering the size of the company and the user base, video content is very limited. Demos etc are fine. But why haven't they been making more use of movie clips, shorts etc...
- ucbrave92, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1figured it would be too good to be true. looks like no movies or tv shows in hd tonight. damn.
- jcjdoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14 am in CA and nothing is up. WTF
- ucbrave92, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah this is some total BS. i wish they would at least give a time it will be up and running.
- CardinalFang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Cool idea, but I'll stick with my On Demand service with my digital cable. Dugg anyway.
- Archangel621, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Major Nelson said even he doesn't have a time as to when it will be up. I'd keep checking his site to see when everything is up.
- crcurran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe this will help, dunno. I would assume they would put this up at the same time...
"The frantic multiplayer brawling game "Small Arms" will be available for download on Xbox Live Arcade for Xbox 360 beginning Wednesday, November 22, after 0800 GMT (1:00 a.m. PST)."
It says *after* so may be it's not as helpful as I first thought. - Microdot, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1seriously.... have any of you ever thought that maybe microsoft is just sitting on the sidelines laughing their rich asses off at all of you that spend money on their products and services? hahahahaha
so... that gave the zune a lifespan of what.... a week? sad.- gwolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As long as they deliver on their promises they deserve to get rich. What is with the childish dislike for anything Microsoft anyway.
- REpler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It is **SO SLOW**
I want a refund. It's going to take, honest to god, 100 hours to complete a 5GB HD movie at the current rate. I have a 1.5mbps connection. This is absolutely ridiculous.
It's just awful. Period. - foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well, it hit today (yesterday to be exact), and the verdict is in--IT SUCKS!!! it sucks ass... hot, sweaty, stinky ass... and donkey balls... big, fat, swinging donkey balls. yup. that just about sums it up.
i downloaded two eps of beavis and butthead and two eps of robot chicken (just to see what it's all about), and each one has its own WONDERFUL story!
the first ep of beavis and butthead took OVER TWO HOURS TO DOWNLOAD! bittorrent is, like, 10x faster than that! the second one DIDN'T EVEN FULLY DOWNLOAD!
then, with robot chicken, i got to watch a VERY PIXELATED 30 SECONDS of some lady watching some old douche bag and some kid getting off some plane--all while some very heartwarming music played in the background. yeah... i may have never seen robot chicken, but i don't think that was it. in fact, i'm almost 100% sure that wasn't it, because the second episode i downloaded was ANOTHER VERY PIXELATED 30 SECONDS of chappelle's show (a very funny skit about "samuel jackson's beer--mmm mmm BITCH!). i can only IMAGINE what i would've seen if i was ***** up enough to download and episode of viva pinata (due to impaired judgment, of course)... maybe a 30 second clip of the movie saw, where some guy gets cut in half by a chainsaw--mmm mmm BITCH!
they really need to FIX THIS *****--it's slow, half the time it doesn't work, and now i'm getting the wrong content--but, first, they need to give me my GODDAMN MONEY BACK!
Browsing Digg on your phone just got easier with our enhancements to the
