- drapelyk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26Here's a picture of my robotic parakeets http://static.flickr.com/85/213574742_eee801216b.jpg?v=0 since you were interested.
The reason that this was breakthrough and made it to digg in the first place was that it reacted to the user. and the guy tells viewers that it's moving based on his touch... a lot of people call that lying... He could have said "When we complete this product it will react like this..." cue leg move "and this" bites finger... you're the idiot phenolholic! :D - mega, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26Totally debunked. Good Work.
- stimcaps, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24Nice catch. I wonder how many times he had to practice before he learned to sync his own actions to the script.
- coreyjess, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21PheonixByrd is either or a true born and bred moron, or....
he works for ugobe, and realizes he's about to loose a ***** of BS based investor money. - KriLL3.2™, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17FIrst lifeform? I thought that title would be given to a one cell creature...
Sad Sony killed it's robotics division, the aibo and Qrio where both miles ahead of this "thing". - Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16did you actually watch the clip?
as soon as he moves in one video, 1/2 later he moves the exact same way, unless this is a 5 minute long coincedence, its fake - Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Im starting to get a bit paranoid that there are people on here who work for Ugobe
I mean how else can people so fervently defend this or miss the point that demonstrating a robot running through a script and claiming its AI is bad/evil/lying
who cares if it will do those things, show us doing them when they can, dont lie about what you hope it could do
I mean hell think of the uproar if microsoft put together a fake video and called it a live demonstration of their new OS just because they didnt want a bsod - bloqmon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16PhoenixByrd, stop bring Bush and 9/11 into this. It has nothing to do with this fake dinosaur toy. This video is even in the Wikipedia article about this company and claims that this toy is a scam. If so many people seem to believe it, clearly you need to see, or visit rather, an optometrist.

LOOK AGAIN - deanlowe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Was everyone really expecting _true_ AI from this thing?
- neoian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14For $200 you can get a cooler pet than that. It needs no batteries and has nothing pre-scripted. It learns from your emotions and feeling and can even be programmed with a little bit of dedication. You may even have to clean up after it from time to time in it's infancy. And if you take care of it, it will become your best friend. You can buy them at the store right now! There is no release date, and there are different sizes colors and styles. That way you can find the one that's right for you. And this amazing thing is called a dog.
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11the issue here is that isnt even programmed intelligence, its just a plain script, and who (even if they are 5) will want t a toy that all it does is:
move leg, stretch neck...walk foward, growl, look down, wag tail...get put in bin - drapelyk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10hey I caught it and wanted to be the first person to submit it... it worked.
- Serinox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11well no, but it could have been a bit more random and interesting.
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8it is a very complex machine with many points of articulation, but if they didn't have a working model, they should NOT have said they do. they should have said they have a hardware finished model, put some more advanced function in it's script (things it would "learn" later on) and shown it as a scripted model since the real code stack is still in development. hell, even if they'd given it triggered motions like "wait til touch on foot" "move foot" then it would have been better than this.
- rumor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8yes, if the "lifeform" had not moved in EXACTLY the same way, at the EXACT same time. The guy didn't do everything exactly the same in both, but the toy sure did. moved exactly the same ammount every time.
- DaltonMan321, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10What if it was in beta stage and it was just to keep the audience interested? It could have been that they didn't have enough time to program it's OS so they just scripted it for those times. We should wait to see if it comes out, and if it does, read the reviews. Until then, don't make assumptions.
- daeyeth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Cool. Now I get to do one of my favorite internet pastimes: Send an angry, vulgar email to the ***** of the internet! Make sure all you diggers out there get one in too! It's our duty to fulfill the digg effect to its fullest extent and show that you can't get away completely clean just because it's the internet.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Yeah, in the original digg many commenters caught on with the scam.. i wasn't quite sure before but now it's clearly faked.
- SpoBo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6damn PhoenixByrd you are one ignorant american ...
ontopic: nicely illustrated that this company is a total scam. They probably release such crap to trick investors and get insanely rich. Same thing happened with gizmondo...too bad most investors don't read digg :D or Wikipedia. - shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5because they must have started it or switched it on a few seconds off. have a little imagination.
- shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5why does intellegent disscussion always have to be linked to adults. There are plenty of smart people that are below 18. I personally think that Digg has just got alot more users, it used to be just the more nerdy people that commented. Now many more people are commenting.
- sofa0ne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I am glad that someone debunked it, as a kid age (6 - 8) I would always read the ads in the back of my Dads' Popular Mechanics "build your own jet engine" and "build your own rocket engines 40 lbs of thrust" and my imagination had it worked out that I could make a rocket pack or jet. Being younger and smaller I didn't need much thrust...I saved up money from shoveling snow and mowing lawns and convinced my Dad that we should order rocket engine building instructions. Once we actually got it the reality that I would not be flying stung but hey I learned how to make a rocket engine later made some model rockets. It was much cheaper to just buy Estes engines unless you wanted something huge...
Now that I rambled on about non-sense I should probably get around to a point...
It's a Toy!
It's better looking than a Furby, and it has hack potential written all over it!
So if you don't like how it acts don't buy it or do and re-program/hack it to work how you want it to work.
Then share video with us on how you fixed the Ugobe.
Goodbye Roomba hello new friend... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"I had plastic models of dinosaurs & i thought they were awesome... then my cousin set them on fire and rolled them down the hill on my skateboard.."
...Which only sounds MORE awesome. :) - nepawoods, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah, it's a toy ... and not quite the "genesis of a whole new era in robotics", as they claim.
- kruykaze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Oh man that's bad.
- Breeder18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This I received from Ugobe today after I sent a letter in regards to the video
Hi Sean,
My name is Khristine and I work with UGOBE on the PR front. UGOBE forwarded me your e-mail regarding the recent YouTube videos questioning Pleo’s legitimacy. There is, in fact, an explanation for this: Both of the videos in the YouTube post were made for DEMO 2006. The DEMO Conference offers all presenters exactly six minutes to demonstrate their new products before a live audience.
Real working Pleo units will evolve over time by autonomously interacting with the environment, using true AI. But, the prototype version in this demonstration video is not a full working model and was meant to just give people a taste – in condensed form – of Pleo's range of behaviors and movements. In the YouTube posting, the video on the right was taped at the conference. The one on the left is simply a backup of the first.
I’m really glad that you were excited by the introduction of Pleo, and I hope that you continue to be. I’m happy to continue chatting about Pleo with you and can’t wait to hear your feedback once the actual product comes to market. Keep in touch and let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Khristine
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10YES!! That is so perfect. "oh he has light sensors and touch sensors all over his body and he is learning from his experiences and he has feelings..." yeah, no one's falling for it *****.
- nazadus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Define AI?
The first step is giving something the ability to see and the *capability* to interact with the environment. The second, and the hardest, is getting to learn how to learn and make decisions.
The first step we are getting pretty close to creating, which is why this hit interest quick.
Now, had he said that it truly interacts and can learn to hate some people and not others, have emotions, or have desires --then that's AI. - drapelyk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes, the videos are out of sync... you try syncing to flash video players of two different videos... Watch the right video and then glance at the left, it should be doing the exact same thing it was in the right... Pay close attention to the feet touching the Pleo on the right gets his right leg tapped and does nothing, but does move in time with the other. It is scripted! If you don't pay close enough attention don't bother to flame it!
- 4NDr01D, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5good job catching it! nice work! totally scripted
- david76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's interesting to note there have been no updates to the articles section of the Ugobe website since April. 47 articles from January through April, and then nothing. Maybe their just in their silent phase prior to releasing their product "this fall."
- drapelyk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2my reply to Julie Crabbil...I replied with an email
Julie Crabill,
From my perspective I saw a company trying to show off a product in a way in which they had not developed it yet. Typically one would assume that this procedure would be a tricky one, for it would require them to make the product work as it had when they had staged it. Not to mention this practice would seem decietful to some individuals.
However, if I was, in fact, incorrect in my judgement of the demonstration, and that that kind of pre-presentation is commonplace in DEMO, I revoke my skeptecism. If so, I sincerely apologize for any repercussions that might have occured from my actions. I would only hope that the controversy would spur the word "Pleo" to become even more well known.
As I said, I apologize for any hindrances I might have placed in Ugobe's path.
Sincerely,
drapelyk - raid517, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can set a stopwatch to the movements of the toy - even if the guy demonstrating it might occasionally alter his responses. The toy is clearly fake.
- oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i have a robotic pencil that i made. it's still a prototype, right now i can nudge it on the right and it rolls left and vice versa.
- drapelyk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2nepawoods, bravo, that's what i've been trying to point out all along... I don't necessarily want them to get bad press over the deal... it was just a stupid idea to make two videos of the same non-functioning product. I hope they have it working and can back it up with a new video.
- mrdoolittle119, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4This is the most ballin ***** eva!!!
if only i had my scissors.... - gbaderek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2even thought it's fake thats still pretty cool. It would be pretty cool to own one of those if it actually had real AI.
- candre23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Now wait just a minute... You mean to tell me that this plastic dino-furby toy isn't really alive? That's outrageous!
- nepawoods, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Look, the guy taps the things foot to evoke a response in one video, while the other video shows the thing moves its foot at that point anyway - clearly an attempt to deceive people into belieiving the thing is responding to its environment. I'l bet it has no sensors in it whatsoever. No evidence of such was demonstrated.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14 million old T-Rex, this is the most balla ***** ever! If only I had my...scissors! HAHAHA
-and scene- - ugotz2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The biggest load of crap yet...
- Tsujigiri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But did we honestly expect primitive AI out of a toy? Only as much as we did from the Tamagotchi, or the Furby before that I'd presume.
I'm a believer that we will see the stirrings of AI - probably even within the next decade. But I do not believe that we will see it coming from the toy industry, based upon the few books I've read on the subject. That said, what toys have there been in history that have made a loyal customer base by releasing exaggerations about their product? Silly Putty, Pop Rocks... From what I know of it, half of the toy industry seems to be about the sale of fantasy. Fantasy that's supposed to coincide with and embellish the product. In my opinion this company has taken a firm step beyond that, but it doesn't make tall tales in the toy industry anything new. - mrlost117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1there was a guy in the youtube comments who works for ugobe PR, said so himself. However he didnt really defend it, more of the "look at the monkey" defense.
- SgtBeavis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I honestly hope its not a total hoax but a well rehearsed presentation. I'm actually planning to buy a Pleo because I want to do what any geek would want to do. I want to hack it.
I'm not disagreeing with anyone here because this video does provide food for a healthy skepticism. However, during the live demonstration, the speaker stated that Pleo was awakening for the first time and was "calibrating his servos" IMO, that seems sorta like booting a PC. It has a distinct set of instructions to start up and start playing.
Still, it was very rehearsed. IMO Ugobe would be very wise to get some 3rd party testers to "play" with the Pleo and give an independent opinion. - alienSkull, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The issue is that you appear to demonstrate its ability to react and learn from its environment, while it seems that everything in this demo was in fact prescripted.
The problem is with the apparent deception. Not the actual abilities of the device. - JulieCrabill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey darpelyk:
No worries at all. We were not looking for an apology, just to clarify. Looking back I will say that since I am so close to the tech industry and shows like DEMO, I did not think that these prototype videos (which we never meant to position as that of a real, working Pleo) might mislead or confuse some people. At DEMO (both in front of the audience and on the show floor), we made it very clear this was a prototype running through a 6 minute scripted routine for the purpose of the show. In the future, I will make sure we highlight that videos like this are that of a prototype shot to show off some of what the actual product will be capable of.
The DEMO show happened many months before the product will actually hit the market so we were working with a solid but early prototype. UGOBE has developed what it needs to make Pleo autonomous and truly interactive and when it comes out, I think you will really like it.
Keep in touch. And never revoke your skepticism... skepticism is great!
Julie - Lokno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wasn't really all that impressed in the first place. Seems like they're just trying to swindle investers.
- riquock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lazy DINO!! Seems like it is programmed to be sleepy all the time.
