Online play is a critical component for Brawl and with Wii in its infancy (Oy... Still making the jokes), there's a lot of things to work out to make it a seamless and perfect experience.
Also, even if it was ready at this point, it'd be way too much market over-saturation. There are already what? 60+ games scheduled from now until December? Good games do take a long time to make. Examples? Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Zelda: Twilight Princess. Both were delayed several years, and look at the results.
