- andy0484, on 02/26/2009, -3/+156Was Super Mario Kart not influenced at all by Super Mario Bros? Industry experts my ass...
- CLShortFuse, on 02/26/2009, -5/+103Buried as inaccurate. It's just a popularity list.
Final Fantasy XII?
Orange Box?
Super Mario Galaxy?
Bioshock?
Seriously? - JoshFester, on 02/26/2009, -3/+63Super Mario Bros should not be left out of the top ten. Rediculous.
- agentsrecord, on 02/26/2009, -0/+47Wow. This guy is talking out of his ass (since this obviously isn't scientific). Saying Halo was more influential on gaming then Street Fighter II? Right. Because Halo 'invented' the FPS, I forgot, and Street Fighter II was just a 'rehashed' concept of the original. This guy doesn't realize Street Fighter II practically invented 1992. And his observations about Super Mario World being more influential then the original game that CREATED the genre? What a failed article.
- inactive, on 02/26/2009, -4/+46WORST LIST EVAR
- Powerfan5000, on 02/26/2009, -3/+43This list is awful.
- dirtyword, on 02/26/2009, -0/+38Halo before Doom?
Mario World before Super Mario Bros?
Final Fantasy XII before Super Mario 64?
Truly a clear depiction of influential games - DrVic, on 02/26/2009, -2/+35Doom
JMHO - roystgnr, on 02/27/2009, -1/+34You just don't understand how unbelievably influential Super Mario Kart is. Its influence can TRAVEL BACK IN TIME.
- mushrooms538, on 02/26/2009, -2/+34Halo over Goldeneye? Halo is a good game and all, but Goldeneye was the blueprint for all modern FPS' out there today.
- Garlik, on 02/26/2009, -4/+28Spelling should not have been left out of your school curriculum. Ridiculous.
- glittler, on 02/26/2009, -2/+24see when they say industry experts they mean chimpanzees
- GimpyBee, on 02/26/2009, -1/+22Guiness World Records should stick to what they do best: ladies with 50 foot nails and the world's fatest men
- inactive, on 02/26/2009, -4/+20The multiplayer and single player were amazing. Personally, I would give it to Tetris.
- rhdesigns, on 02/26/2009, -0/+16How did Final Fantasy XII beat out Final Fantasy VII?
- sugdude, on 02/26/2009, -2/+17This list is *****... Whys FF12 above FF7 and many other influential games. I thought it seemed OK till about 10. Then it just goes horridly downhill.
- hollywoodphony, on 02/26/2009, -2/+16No Hello Kitty Island Adventure? *****.
- xerograde, on 02/26/2009, -1/+15Agreed. This list is just ridiculous. Where are the games that pioneered genres, i.e. Wolfenstein, Donkey Kong, etc??
- filldeviant, on 02/26/2009, -2/+15I was going to bury, but dugg for Pokemon Red/Blue. Oh, the good times...
- hazello, on 02/26/2009, -0/+13So... what exactly has Super Mario kart inspired, then??
- jman583, on 02/26/2009, -1/+14Far better 50 Most Influential Video Games list:
http://www.1up.com/do/feature?cId=3116290 - youareretarded, on 02/27/2009, -0/+13I think he meant multilayer FPS (and remember we are talking about consoles).
- OffensivePrick, on 02/27/2009, -2/+14Top 50 Worst All-Time Video Games Lists:
#50-2: ???
#1: "Top 50 Console Games of All Time," Guinness World Records 2009 Gamer's Edition - fluidfoundation, on 02/26/2009, -1/+10Actually, I'd throw Tetris up as more influential, being that ever since Tetris we've seen non stop object placement based timed games. It's spawned so many generations of games.... I don't really see Mario Kart doing that. Maybe if I could throw a turtle shell out of a warthog that would have been true...
- Powerfan5000, on 02/26/2009, -0/+9The list is about console gaming so Wolfenstein (PC) and Donkey Kong (Arcade) don't deserve a spot. The list is still horrible though.
- festizian, on 02/27/2009, -0/+9"Keep in mind this is being judged on a game's initial impact and lasting legacy, not necessarily how fun they were."
Half of these games haven't even been out long enough to create a "legacy" - AtlanticVortex, on 02/27/2009, -0/+9Really? Continue...
- andyroo316, on 02/27/2009, -7/+16Just because something has it's own influences does not mean that it is not influencial in it's own right.
Shakespeare is similarly incredibly, undeniably influencial, but almost everything he wrote was inspired and influenced by other stories.
Simple.
Despite using pre-existing characters and settings, Mario Kart was it's own game. It could have easily used other characters and still been a roaring success, based on it's engine, mechanics and playability alone.
Think before you put fingers to keyboard, andy0484. - twertyto, on 02/26/2009, -2/+10Right. The most influenced (supposedly) console game of all time is strongly influenced by Super Mario Bros. So how it is not #1?
- NathanielJ, on 02/27/2009, -0/+8Really, that's what your beef with this list is? That BioShock and Fallout 3 aren't ranked higher on the list of "most influential games"? What the hell has Fallout 3 influenced? It just came out.
Have more than a 6 month memory thanks. - Shadic, on 02/27/2009, -0/+8Super Mario Kart was only ranked so high because not only did it have the Feather, but it had no goddamned Blue Shell.
- shanehonda, on 05/19/2009, -4/+11Mario Kart 64, Mario Kart Wii, oh the list goes on and on...
- inactive, on 02/27/2009, -1/+8Super Mario Bros. was more influential regardless of the who influenced who argument. Far more platforming games emerged and are still being made because of it. There are a lot of kart games, but nowhere near the amount of sidescrolling platformers.
- LegomanArt, on 02/27/2009, -0/+7Rather, you must be 16 years old. How many 16 year olds have really played Goldeneye?
- DeathJux, on 02/26/2009, -1/+8So by "the original Grand Theft Auto" they mean "Grand Theft Auto 3," right?
As the other Grand Theft Auto games on the list are the sequels of 3. - rz8472, on 02/27/2009, -0/+6How about Starcraft? I mean there are TV channels in South Korea dedicated to broadcasting SC matches 24/7...
I don't think you can say that about any other game at any other time. - twertyto, on 02/26/2009, -0/+6First death match game? I think Doom gets that title. No one really dies in MK.
- Genrre, on 02/27/2009, -0/+6What has it influenced, exactly?
- percypersimmon, on 02/26/2009, -1/+7lolwut
- DaRizat, on 02/27/2009, -0/+6And making beer.
- twertyto, on 02/27/2009, -0/+6Not on the list since Doom is primarily not a console game.
- blinkatron, on 02/26/2009, -0/+6I would say Doom is definitely a possibility.
Maybe the original C&C as well...
And maybe as a wild card pick, I will go out on a limb and say Half-Life 2 - deweyhewson, on 02/26/2009, -0/+6Uh, no, modding goes back as early as Wolfenstein 3D, and probably before that.
It talks about that in Masters of Doom. - m0n0kr0m3, on 02/27/2009, -0/+6DONKEY KONG!!!!!! FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Without Donkey Kong there would be no Mario....
- Hetman, on 02/26/2009, -0/+6You die once you lose three balloons.
- KSUdesigner, on 02/27/2009, -1/+7Super Mario Kart inspired other Mario Kart games? Wow, it must be the most influential game in history then.
- OffensivePrick, on 02/26/2009, -0/+5Doom actually allowed for extensive modding, and had a big community surrounding it. .wad
- DieAuteur, on 02/26/2009, -0/+5A fascinating article, but how can Super Mario Kart be more influential than Super Mario Bros.? SMK rocks, but all of its characters, landscapes, and items came from previous Mario games. Guinness must have found their gaming experts while snacking on some fungus in the Mushroom Kingdom...
- davethe1st, on 02/27/2009, -0/+5That list is *****, Half-Life is nowhere to be found on it.
- festizian, on 02/27/2009, -0/+5Hopefully that was sarcasm. Yeah it sells millions every year but what makes it influential? Absolutely nothing. It adds nothing to the gaming industry. Each and every year it comes out with the same thing, changing the stats of the teams and allowing you to do one or two more things with a dynasty mode, drafting, etc..
