- CrazyNic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+45That really is what it's all about, such closely matched competitors a couple of lead changes, and what ended it a photo-finish...if you didn't get a rush watching you're not a true geek!
- doctabu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+39I think that this might've been at a talent show and not a LAN party.
1) The two seemed to be on a stage.
2) I heard the sound of women screaming.
Good show, though. Good show. - tynin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+33terribly dorky, but i love watching timed gaming like that :) good stuff.
- riddlebox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23This is better then the time attack videos' because no EMULATORS were used. All of the time attack videos of like SMB3 in 11 minutes...SMW in 12...and what ever else they all used emulators and played the games at 1/3 the speed of the original so therefore they could predict the enemies movements (although it is possible to predict playing at regular, im a huge mario fan) but also they used the emulators..that would keep saved spots and anytime something happened they would go back and redo it. Then edit the video. There's a website that is all about it.
http://bisqwit.iki.fi/nesvideos/EmulatorHomepages.html - SlappyMc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21People say this cant be a competitive sport.
- Phineas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I think you're right too, I mean who's heard of screaming women at lan parties?
- Function, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14The problem with some of the speed demos, is that they're emulated, and sometimes pull of these ridiculous pipe-jumps which, are technically possible, are extremely difficult to do every time. We're talking 1/100ths of seconds to hit the edge of a pipe while a plant is poking out of the pipe, while simultneously jumping. I've tried endlessly to perfect the pipe jump, but i'm suspicious if it's possible to replicate game after game. There's no one straight path that time trialers take, (although similar) I think it just ends up being what's comfortable for you.
Twin Galaxies (The official record keeping organization for video games) rules state (According to the "Minimalist Speed Run" rules):
"[Wall-Jumping is defined as jumping against a wall [or pipe] in such a manner that a pixel or two of Mario is stuck in the wall [or Pipe] and is able to use that to jump again, far higher then can be done normally. Further definition; Mario cannot be made to jump off of a surface that is 90 degrees perpindicular to the ground. Please note this can be further used to also go through solid objects not normally passable as is disallowed.]
[The Alternative Pipe usage refers to, for example, going through a lone brick while crouched to go through the wall and access World -1, whereas the pipes would normally be Warp Pipes to Worlds 2-4 Respectively. The doubling back on World 8-4 to get to the underwater area is another example]"
Use a glitch, it's not an offical score.
5.09 seems to be the fastest speed so far, tied by three players.

For Current Records. - Matty2Jay, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15I'm digging this because it's Mario Brothers and AND I heard the Ultimate Warrior's theme at the very begining.
- WDot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Dugg. I'm glad people can still be into Super Mario Bros even with Halo 2 and all those other "Modern" games. I'm going to fire up my Animal Crossing NES emulators. ;)
- Function, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13It's not too bad, They did lose some time on certain parts though, the better time trialers don't waste time trying to get big, or fire flowers. Although it does help on world 1-2 to fly through that level. I really dug the duck under the fireballs trick on the underwater section of 8-4. Although, I know most of you won't believe this, but I can time trial about 6-10 secs faster than these guys. They get stuck on pipes here and there, the guy on the left lost TONS of time by getting fireworks on the end of 1-1. There's tons of little stupid tricks you learn to get faster. Getting a mushroom or a fire flower nets a loss of 1-2 seconds every time (because of the hit-then-go-backwards move, then the 1/2 sec "growing" animation) It really adds up.
It was still fun as hell to watch though. I'd love to play against these guys. - SlappyMc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Holy, this is good fun to watch.
- skidknee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9This video was pretty awesome.
The thrill of doing something right in real-time, no external devices for assistance, made the experience for me when I was younger.
It really applies to a lot of the games for the older consoles. It was about beating them over and over again, but in front of friends and proving to yourself how well you could master each level or how many points you could score. That video was very nostalgic. - Computer_Kid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11There not geeks, just hard-core mario fans!
- feshmania, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I have to say. Next to boobs, that was the coolest thing I have ever seen.
- Continuum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6That guy that you are talking about did use an emulator though. Plus, in the privacy of his own home with no pressure to win.
- Phineas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Time trial video gaming is always fun, and this one has a decent sound track no less
- mattramos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It also says on the google page that their times were slower because it was in fact a talent show.
- zone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5yeah, i knew there was something suspicious about wall jumping.. but it kinda brings new life to the game, like a bonus expansion :)
anyway.. here is a guide with like every single glitch known (i guess) in SMB
http://bisqwit.iki.fi/nesvideos/SuperMarioBrosTricks.html
you can digg it here if u like it (i tried to submit it, but i just realized i dugg it like a year ago >. - Kiwwa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I think you might be right, I assumed (probably incorrectly) that it was a LAN due to the large number of people gathered around two huge screens time-trialling a NES game, but a Talent Show does seem to fit it a little better.
- DaveyDeadite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The First Song is History Of A Boring Town By Less Than Jake Off The Album Hello Rockview, one of my all time favorite albums..
- koheed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Digging for Less Than Jake!!!!!!!
- Kiwwa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah, these guys REALLLY worked hard to get as good as they are, i'm almost amazed at some of the stuff they pull off in an almost effortless manner.
- yllabianbitpipe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This kind of thing should be in the Olympics.
- Trjn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There are a couple of different types of time attacks, I came across a website (can't remember the URL) where there were videos of people doing time trials of various games. You got the more obvious ones, like racing games, SMW, SMB3, possibly some Sonic the Hedgehog, and then a few longer videos, of say. . . Baldur's Gate or one of the Resident Evil games.
There were conditions that had to be met though, it had to be played on a console, so they were all legitimate and not faked, and you could either do a "one sit" run, where you don't save at all, or a "multiple sittings" run, where you could save as you please, meaning that you could keep redoing sections until you were satisfied with your times.
Some of those videos were impressive, although, I have to admit, it is a bit of a waste of bandwidth, but then again. . . we all just watched this video which is about the same size. - foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4playing on tv screens (and probably an nes), projected on white screens, with great music, and the players dressed up as mario and luigi... this is better than watching most halo 2 multiplayer gaming! DIGG
- pentomino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Actually, the US version of SMB1 does that too.
You might be thinking of SMB3, where the U.S. version turns Fire Mario into Super Mario when hit. - CheeseMan316, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So who here will admit that they watched it more than once???
- Kiwwa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3When I posted this, I'd searched digg for Super Mario Brother's stories, found nothing, when I submitted the story TO Digg, DIGG found nothing... I'm sorry for duping this guy out of his story, but I couldn't find it when I tried to.
- michael.calfee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Oh man, watching Mario Bros. with Danger Zone playing! It sent chills down my spine! I want to be in 1st grade again :(
- bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Holy crap that was awesome! I never really liked the idea of all this competitive gaming that's being talked about lately, but something like Super Mario Bros. racing is kind of visceral to me and I definately enjoyed watching it. I think when you play the game inside out and know what it takes to win, it makes watching somebody more skilled than you all the more interesting.
- Kiwwa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, I keep seeing that as well, I thought it musta been a bug because of my submitting it, but apparently not. *Shouts out to Digg-Team to fix Digg!* :)
- Function, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I don't know some of the others, but the classic 80's hair rock song "Danger Zone" was by Kenny Loggins. Any 80's kid would easily recognize this as the soundtrack to Top Gun, long before we thought Tom Cruise was mental. BOGEYS on my six! I can't shake em!
- EsotericBoredom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3any one else think these guys looked more like the Mario brothers then the actors from that god awful movie?
- mentor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Google seems to be having issues for lots of people at the moment. It's not working for me locally in Durham, UK; It is from other locations I have access to. Otheres are reporting the same.
- sketchstudios, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3SWEET, i LOVE this video, i already greasemonkey saved it to my HD ;P
This brings back memories of the movie from the 80s The Wizard. I swear, I could never find it on DVD and I think they only sold it in europe (on dvd) but it was called by another name and some things were edited. I went and got a perfect copy on VHS, then trasnfered it to DVD with some cool menus I made in Adobe Encore and even the packaging for the DVD. :)
if you havent checked out the movie, GO SEE IT (especially if you loved the video posted)

- KevinJ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4+Digg for DANGER ZONE!!!
- thidranki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't know many people whou would dress as mario and luigi for a LAN party
unless they were the main event, or INCREDIBLE nerds/geeks/dorks or whatever. - craigeth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3when they stand up at the end, arent they standing in front of computer screens?
anyway, they both one at the same time no? - mailman-zero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wouldn't say that this is bettor or worse than emulator-assisted time attack movies. They are two different things. The one is showing what is a game would look like given perfection, the other is showing how good a person can get at a game. They both require talent, and they both require effort. They are similar and share a lot of info with one another, but to accomplish different goals.
Different != Bad - voidstar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3To heck with Top Gun. This is the proper use of Danger Zone. No doubt...
- mailman-zero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Less Than Jake was an awesome way to get things going. Awesome music + awesome competition = Super Cool Video!
- Function, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh, My fastest speed so far is 5:24.
Although I'm going to try some of the tricks these guys used. I haven't submitted a Twin Galaxies score yet. Although I hold a few scores in other games. - patrickweber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I must be a true geek then.. hehe. That was pretty cool.
- MrC539, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow...I feel like such a geek, but that was awesome. Too bad the guy on the left got the fireworks in 1-1.
- Kiwwa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Like I posted earlier, when I originally found this story, I searched Digg for a dupe, didn't find one. I looked for about 10 minutes, sorry if I missed it.
When I put the LINK into Digg, IT didn't find anything.
When i'd finished my submission and it tries to find stories similar to mine that could be dupes... it STILL didn't find anything.
I'm sorry my story got dugg so much more, I guess it's testiment to the fact that people check out a story with a flashy, keyword filled title.
So in summation, sorry I duped, I didn't meant to, but that's Digg for you. - ski91902, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2wow, this reminds me to actually go back and beat the game.
SM3 sure wasn't a challenge after the dual whistles - ACalcutt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i didn't know you could jump off lava
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That has to be one of the coolest things I've ever seen.
- jamesey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2when I was 8 years old, an event like this was my life dream
