- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Stop trying to shoot your load into your mouth.
- alephsmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Or is it just that all the smart people play video games?
- FoxFaction, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15I'm sure all that post-frag teabagging is a veritable spawning ground for a cornucopia of intellectual stimulation.
- InstantRamen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I have been telling my mom. Beating hookers is beneficial to my developing brain
- Zarxrax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11"He suggested that somewhere down the road, video games might be tailored to help the elderly keep their minds sharp."
Did this guy totally miss Brain Age, or what? - Shorties, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11No that's sexual stimulation... We gamers have to be well rounded.
- noreturn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I don't know a single person who plays MMORPG's and also possesses good time management skills.
- farther, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7What? I'm the only one discussing Nietzsche and his implications for political theory after a good ol' frag? *****.
- drjekelmrhyde, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Did you know masturbation is good for hand and eye coordination
- trubbleshute, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Look at MMOs, talk about diversity there. In guild chat one night, a construction worker was eloquently talking about the Allegory of the Cave with someone who had a PhD in English. It's pretty cool stuff.
- rolandog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Playing video games where you could use kittens as shotgun silencers has been proven to be beneficial to the brain as well.
- RYZ3Rwitha3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This isn't anything new. In fact, it's practically common sense. Puzzle oriented games are naturally going to stimulate your brain in a beneficial way just as working algebra equations would. Not all games are going to stimulate your brain positively though. Playing games like Halo or GTA probably do about as much good for the old noggin as watching re-runs of Smallville. Not that I am saying that either one of those activities should be scorned. I'm certainly in no position to anyway haha.
- tmilam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2...and alcohol is good for your health in moderation. It's really not surprising to hear this. The key, though, is always moderation. 12 hours a day playing video games will surely have some negative side effects.
- zacharyr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Steven Johnson wrote an entire book about this: Everything Bad is Good for You.
Old news. - farther, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You would think that the kitten screaming in terror would actually be a bit more alarming than the average gunshot. Especially in *insert violent American city here*.
- demonsofgoetia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wesnoth!
- proficient, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Indeed. It depends on the game that provides more stimulation for the brain.
- noreturn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And nerdy losers that can't deal with life in the real world surround themselves with... Yes, that's right: MMORPG's.
- toast1226, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2all i need to hear now is that south park is somehow beneficial to my brain then im all set
- ericeman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Of course many games, if not all of them, have beneficial qualities. It's no secret that they make you think and work your brain.
The question is, are portions of games negatively affecting your brain. Can you subconsciously be swayed to do bad things because you are doing it in a video game? - noreturn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm only surprised that your gaming hasn't led you to the point where you can teabag and philosophize simultaneously...
- Shorties, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No he said hand-eye coordination... he isn't aiming for his mouth, he is aiming for his eye.
- oskite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This doesn't mean things like V-Smile are any better though.
- pjhurst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+08 percent less errors and .045 seconds quicker. This is just so impressive......I wouldn't change my video game playing habits based on this study. I am not saying there aren't benefits to playing FPSs as many above have discussed, but this study isn't identifying them very well in my opinion.
- kmckanna, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How many studies do they have to do to prove this... It's already proven.
You learn things like time management, responsibility, working hours for "rewards," and other things like that in MMORPGs.
In FPS you build/learn things like better Hand eye Coor., reflexes, planning in hostile situations.
That's just a small taste, there are plenty of other genre's with plenty of other things to gain/learn. - sychotic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+08% more accurate and 45ms faster doesn't sound like much of a benefit
- farther, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2He's aiming for his mom. She's on the other side of the trailer. **j/k, as usual
- cakemeat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0These type of studies have been going on "FOREVER". I totally believe that your brain would work better, or atleast your problem solving skills would Increase. Even when video games a completely unrealistic tone.
It all comes down to math. With FPS games. You use and abuse angles constantly. With puzzles/adventure you work out small problems with a series of steps. etc..etc... Its all kinda like mental exercise. - Coronagold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ever see that Nintendo DS ad? "Oh hi! Honey, this is....Uhhhhhhhhhhh...Uhhhhhhhhhh...Uhhhhhhhhh....."
- UniversalTarget, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's learning two things.
If you're getting teabagged-- how to deal with rejection or failure.
If you're doin the teabagging-- how to be a polite winner. - dudad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You have to remember how diverse your brain really is. "Playing games helps your brain" is a pretty broad statement and is about as true as "playing video games hurts your brain." Usually I play games (and watch tv) so I don't have to think. Just relaxing is going to help my brain - at least for a little while.
Obviously, if you play for 12 hours a day every day it's not going to be beneficial; it will give you carpal tunnel, lack of vitamin D, etc. - UniversalTarget, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it is when you're shooting at people.
- kmckanna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lol, alright I have played MMORPGs and know a select few kids who are my friends that have too, and I can tell you that if you think everyone who plays an MMORPG is a nerdy loser, then I think you are insecure about yourself.
If you met some of the kids who did play and not the biased majority of kids who just salivate over their keyboards, you'd feel like an idiot right now. One of my good friends has Harvard and Yale lined up, is a very social person, and played an MMORPG (WoW) for nearly a year and easily quit, along with myself.. We played while easily maintaining our social lives... - viscousplatypus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0First thing I thought of when I read the headline. I'm glad someone beat me to it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0playing videogames is by far better than watching television that'll rot your brain
- kmckanna, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@noreturn
"Successful people surround themselves by other successful people." - alephsmith, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1deleted
