- doshindude, on 05/01/2009, -22/+88You know, funny thing is, when emulated, these games look horrible because they were designed with a CRT television in mind; they knew that graphical glitches and jagged sprites would get smoothed out by the imperfection of the RF signal.
- zydeco, on 05/02/2009, -1/+65Where's the option where mom turns on the vacuum cleaner and you get spots all over the screen?
- Astark, on 05/02/2009, -2/+63Okay, so some college kids have little or no memory of a CRT TV? They can't remember like 5 years ago? Not to mention that a lot of people still have a CRT TV and monitor today.
- towlie2110, on 05/01/2009, -3/+50In other news,
Japanese developers of the latest HD television get bitch-slapped by "innovation" - cathbard, on 05/02/2009, -0/+43Some can't remember what happened 5 minutes ago.
- greggerm, on 05/02/2009, -2/+42I dugg 'ya, but isn't your point pretty much the entire point of the article in the first place?
- PiddlyD, on 05/02/2009, -0/+30re: RF. A *television signal* is sent by RADIO FREQUENCY. In the old days, you played your game through an RF Modulator that competed by cabled signal for something on the *dial* between channels 2, 3 and 4, generally. Like using a RF Modulator today to broadcast your iPod to a "clear" channel in the FM frequency, there was still a lot of interference. Why, back in the old days, TVs didn't even have "input" buttons - you had your VHF and your UHF, and you were happy with it...
Pshaw... Nintendo-kids... - LeviTheSmith, on 05/02/2009, -0/+29OK wtf who made that comment?
- temujin1234, on 05/02/2009, -0/+23This one's included in several emulators:
http://www.slack.net/~ant/libs/ntsc.html - LeviTheSmith, on 05/02/2009, -0/+21I'm using a CRT right now.
- LeviTheSmith, on 05/02/2009, -0/+17it has you as being dugg up but I don't remember doing that..
- jman583, on 05/02/2009, -0/+15Bits or GTFO.
- thwoom, on 05/02/2009, -0/+15haha, you made it seem like that was your idea. did you read the article?
- bratterscain, on 05/01/2009, -2/+15Got him beat. I have an original 2600 along with a 30 year old Zenith CRT. Once I aquire some old school Nikes, brown corduroys, a Garanimals polo shirt, and BAM! average 80's kid.
- inactive, on 05/02/2009, -3/+16Lol. It's funny because twitter really is ***** useless.
- Wilson, on 05/02/2009, -0/+12I'm trying to figure out what you mean. Are you forgetting that old televisions only had an RF signal input?
- omgbanana, on 05/02/2009, -0/+11I just barely replaced my CRT computer monitor 6 months ago...
- scooterbaga, on 05/01/2009, -5/+15If they'd tone down the added 'noise' just a bit, it'd be perfect. I'd love to have an emu like that.
On a side note... I'm so ***** stoked to play emu on my soon to arrive 67" HDTV! That is all. - Jeebugorn, on 05/02/2009, -0/+10i dont remember the games looking so crappy back in the day. and by back in the day i mean 1983, when i was playin games on my family's Atari 800XL
- smacksaw, on 05/02/2009, -0/+9Nikes?
Blasphemy.
Get yourself some Zips or KangaROOS, son!
While you're at it, ditch the Garanimals and just wear your Underoos. - smacksaw, on 05/02/2009, -0/+9I thought you said Twitter was useless.
- rwsmart, on 05/01/2009, -6/+15Totally old school
- whiledo, on 05/02/2009, -0/+8You do realize that the RF Modulator was the standard way for most of us to play the NES and for many, the SNES, right? Composite jacks weren't that common, especially if you didn't have a new TV. VCRs frequently had them, but were then plugging into the TV using good old RF via coax.
- raydeen, on 05/02/2009, -0/+8I think it's a.) we had nothing else to compare it to and b.) the simpler the shape, the more your brain will read into it. Our brains would take those old 8x8 blocks and fill in details that were never there or seemed to be there because of the tech that was being employed.
- Myztry, on 05/02/2009, -0/+8Corduroys were more 70's. 80's were more denim.
That being said, I just got back from going out for tea wearing a brown corduroy jacket made by Just Jeans. I kid you not. The 21st century is just a combination of all the old eras anyway. - whiledo, on 05/02/2009, -0/+7Additionally, do you have any idea why there's an "RF" in "RF modulator"?
- cuppyCake, on 05/02/2009, -0/+7http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RF_connector
- Khast, on 05/02/2009, -0/+7Even if, the technology used in the more recent CRT is actually more precise than the CRT displays in the 70s and 80s. Today it is possible to actually have a near LCD/Plasma quality from the CRT displays made currently.
20 years of technological advances makes a whole lot of difference. - scooterbaga, on 05/02/2009, -0/+7Holy ***** that's awesome. ...And to think I kept that turned off all these years.
You're my favorite person until the very end of this sentence. - SitPoMk, on 05/02/2009, -0/+7Also, my crotch itches
- 11familyguy11, on 05/02/2009, -1/+8The blending of the lines to create a sunset blew my mind all over my monitor.
- MyMainMan, on 05/02/2009, -1/+7Nothing new!
Mame has all this already(it's been incorporated for a long time), except for the RF noise - Yage2006, on 05/02/2009, -0/+6It would be awesome if someone could figure out a way to do this for M.A.M.E
- LeviTheSmith, on 05/02/2009, -0/+6WTF you're older than I am and I disagree.
- TheBlueVulcan, on 05/02/2009, -0/+5I'm pretty sure it's commonly recognized that CRTs still provide the best overall picture quality. They are unmatched, for example, when it comes to black levels.
- gemlarin, on 05/02/2009, -1/+6Zydeco, thanks for the awesome flashback with that comment! You put a huge smile on my face.
I still remember bitching at my mom for messing up the picture and drowning out my game sounds with the old hoover upright.
Her response, "Why dont you go out and play like the other kids".
Secretly I knew that the other kids were inside, glued to their tv's playing video games as well. - jstem1994, on 05/02/2009, -0/+5Memories........ of the way we were.
- Myztry, on 05/02/2009, -0/+5Where is the Chroma noise? I used Chroma noise to make Red and Green in hires mode (black and white) on the Tandy Colour.
- Spoomeister, on 05/02/2009, -2/+7Okay, so some college kids have little or no memory of a CRT TV? They can't remember like 5 years ago? Not to mention that a lot of people still have a CRT TV and monitor today.
- palehorse864, on 05/02/2009, -0/+4Jumpman FTW!
- RevoltPuppy, on 05/02/2009, -1/+5Your old is showing.
- smacksaw, on 05/02/2009, -1/+5Shouldn't that be on your Twitte...errr...wait...thought I was bernz111 there for a second. Carry on.
- smacksaw, on 05/02/2009, -1/+5You could have tweeted that comment on Twitter and it would have been a perfect example of what Twitter is for.
Your head assplode. - willnicoll, on 05/02/2009, -0/+4If this guy helped work on this it must be legit. http://www.digitallounge.gatech.edu/faculty/index. ...
- Iggins, on 05/02/2009, -3/+7I agree it's not long ago. But never underestimate this new generation....To me they are a generation that is SO disconnected from the past...
- inactive, on 05/02/2009, -1/+5So they spent all that money and effort into downgrading visual quality? Bright future ahead for these guys.
- trowa, on 05/02/2009, -0/+4Without my glasses, they all look like this.
- WinZiggy, on 05/02/2009, -0/+4I had an Atari 2600 as a kid. the images didn't look THAT bad on a CRT.
- marx2k, on 05/02/2009, -0/+3Emulation on huge screens is .. eh...
I have a 65" and playing Commodore 64 games on it is depressing. - TaintBrush, on 05/02/2009, -0/+3Cool! It reminds me of that one screensaver bundled with some Linux distros, AnalogTV or something like that, that takes your screen and adds static and flips "channels" and stuff.
