- Medievaldragon, on 10/12/2007, -9/+38Bennyboy371, stay tuned. Snowflake Entertainment -- hosted by WC3Campaigns -- is going to release an updated FAQ page for the total conversion mod Project Revolution. Once the FAQ page is released, they will announce a date for an upcoming Public Q&A on IRC chat. You will be able to ask questions directly to the developers of the mod.
Basically, you will play starcraft in the Warcraft 3 engine. Harvest gas and minerals, order your units to build tech buildings and do exactly what you do in the original Starcraft: Broodwar game. You can rotate the camera same as you do in Warcraft 3. The Terran buildings will freaking float in Warcraft 3 too. Tilesets and Doodads will be ported -- and you can make BGH maps for Warcraft 3. - phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -20/+48I'm not really excited. I used to be a fan of the starcraft series, but blizzard literally doesn't want to do anything with it. They're obsessed with their warcraft garbage for the past 10 years that I literally gave up waiting the second they cancelled Starcraft: Ghost. Even if they were to announce Starcraft II, I don't think I'd care anymore. I've turned into an FPS gamer since then, playing stuff like CS, Half life 2, Halo, and so on.
- bennyboy371, on 10/12/2007, -11/+36OH MY GOD YES PLEASE. I don't even install other games, other than a SNES emulator.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21Wasted??
How dare you! - ilovemusic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I love Starcraft. I want to see some Hydras tear apart someones base with a nydus... bwahaha.
Spawn more overlords! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15"but blizzard literally doesn't want to do anything with it. They're obsessed with their warcraft garbage for the past 10 years that I literally gave up waiting"
They did a sketch on MadTV about people that, literally, use "literally" when it shouldn't be used.
Blizzard actually does want to do something with it, Ghost just met so many problems they shelved it for now.
There's also a lot of speculation that Starcraft 2 is already in the works. - Gregd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Ted was a friend of mine from work. One of the things that we did was stay up late playing Starcraft. We'd go in the next day at work and talk about the cool things that happened in the game. I merely mentioned it because Starcraft reminds me of him. I'm sorry if you don't think it's relevant.
- maiku00, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13ugh.. my broodwar cd is broken, and I never bothered buying frozen throne, because warcraft blows. It would be fun to play, but I dont think its worth the hassle if you need to run around rebuying old games :|
SC:2 is way overdue. Another Diablo would have been better as well, instead of all this WC *****. And WC probobly won't be going away any time soon to make room for new game development, since mmorpgs have a lot of milk to be milked -_- - HebrewHammer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I would love to see Blizzard put out an awesome new version of Starcraft, but this isnt it. A mod to warcraft is nice and all, but its not what Ive been hoping for since I played Starcraft as a kid. As phpirate said, I just dont think Blizzard wants to do anything with it, too bad really.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Download the game. and use your own CD-Key. Im sure its legal.
- Kujila, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Why the heck is this comment buried? It's informational. Digg
[EDIT: Cool, it was at -6 diggs, but now it's climbing :P] - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Zealot rush > 'Ling rush
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I think it's due to the fact that Blizzard is afraid of pissing off their fans. I mean, if SC2 has some major flaw, that's a big hit to Blizzard's public image. I know that some Starcraft addicted WoW playing Koreans would cancel their WoW accounts.
If Starcraft 2 sucked, would you still feel the same about Blizzard? I know I wouldn't.
Don't think I'm saying "better to be safe than sorry" it's just that Blizzard's never been known to rush a game, and if the market demands Starcraft 2, Blizzard will supply it. But on their own terms, and when they're good and ready to. - varaon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Hehe, can you feel the love tonight?
Amazing how an 8-year-old RTS is still so loved.
C'mon Blizzard - gives us SC 2!
By the way, there will a public Q&A shortly as well. - midwinter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8It's all about Siege Tanks.
- jasonvw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Blizzard is not owned by EA. It's owned by Vivendi Universal Games.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Someone tried that alrdy
http://mods.moddb.com/1530/starkiller/
Try it out. I dont know how to get it to work. its for C&C Generals
The screenies show the Carriers which look wierd - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11"i dont mean to be a dick, but how is that relevant in any way?"
he wanted to get it off his chest..
What better way then anonymously? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9looks cool, like probably many, I've never considered myself "hardcore" since Starcraft. I'd love to revisit Starcraft with some 3d love, it may not be the same experience again (with 99% certainty) but it'd still bring back some nostalgia.
The fact that, they are not violating any intellectual property laws will hopefully provide some resistance to the no doubt attempt of a shutdown by Blizzard/Vivendi.
My greatest fears for the success of this mod however are:
- AI Mods - Warcraft 3's AI is _dramatically_ different, any lingering elements of War3's AI will probably kill the impression that I'm playing Starcraft again. Getting the unique AI of each unit down will be tough, certain units in SC have unique quirks about their AI (Zerg Queens, Siege Tanks, High Templar, Dark Templar, Reavers) that are so trademark Starcraft (atleast to me and others I've spoken with). Even lacking this unnecessary uniqueness weakens the game in my eyes (maybe I'm in a select group of players however).
- Unit Movement AI - Since it's a little different than enemy AI, movement in Starcraft is also very different from War3's AI. I'll just itemize here
- Troop Movement - War3's units travel in bands, units try to travel the same speed and keep in a close group, Starcraft's AI travels in straight lines, it's up to the player to monitor and control armies, this is a critical element that keeps Starcraft as a micro intense game and War3 as a so-so "n00b" game.
- Unit AI - Once again certain units move very uniquely, in Starcraft you can't debate, certain units are much more mobile than others. Zerglings fit into the smallest cracks of the map where NO other unit (save flying) has an ability to go, Goliaths and Dragoons move in very strange fashion are much more micro intense than you would first think.
Heh, I know very few if nobody will read this, but I still had fun writing up my opinions. - aurath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6If Blizzard can't come around to making a StarCraft 2, the I guess the community will. I also believe that SC2 is in development secretly. Blizzard posted job opportunities and said they would be working on a game from the team responsible for Diablo 1 & 2. Now to me, this seems like it's way to obvious, everyone was like "OMG DIABLO 3!". But I know Blizzard is more subtle than that. They aren't dumb. I think they're working on SC2 and giggling diabolically while doing it. Just my two cents.
- TheBrandman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9@ icefrakker
You're being a dick.
It's fun to pick out spelling or information errors, but some things, at least to me, are better left unquestioned. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm pretty sure Blizzard will not fail to deny us more Starcraft goodness whenever the opportunity arises. They'll sink the project at the last minute. But it's no big loss, since I'd much rather play a Starcraft 2 than a Warcraft 3 mod.
- Gregd, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12I was a diehard fan of Starcraft. I wasted too many hours playing this game, even on worknights. A friend that used to stay up late and play Starcraft with us, died a year and a half ago in a car accident. :o( All this being said, I'd love, love, love to see and play this game!
- javierror, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Dugg for SC
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If this isn't officially authorized by Blizzard, it will be shot down upon launch, or at least if it goes popular. Blizzard did it with the Warcraft conversion for Starcraft, and they will likely do it again. It's right there in the terms of use to not develop games infringing on their or others' copyrights. It *would* be interesting if this was a professionally designed mod with the blessings of Blizzard, but do we believe they'd want to give gamers an essential Starcraft 3D without financially profiting from it?
- Woofcat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Why do they care about Blizz and their rights? I would just host it out of China and tell Blizz to go ***** themselfs. Offer all the copywriten music and tiles etc and just release it as a full game.
- Tanpreet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5but i do wonder why they didnt make a second starcraft right after the first one. they have made sequels for thier other games (diablo, warcraft). also wasnt starcraft one of thier most popular games ever? and yes i know ghost was being made, but i mean a RTS sequel.
- phoque, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Shouldn't it say Warcraft 3 to Starcraft total conversion mod?
- BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Blizzard doesn't care about Starcraft because with WoW, they are basically printing money. Even if Starcraft 2 was a huge hit (and it probably would be), the resources Blizzard would have to dedicate to it would hurt WoW development and hurt WoW's continued growth ---and that is just too big of a gamble.
Like the guy said above, if you're really jonesing for RTS get ready for Supreme Commander which is the spiritual successor to the best RTS of all time, Total Annihilation. - Cglass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They announced that they hired the lead writer for Diablo 3 last E3 (2005)...it's going to be a while, but yes, it's in the works. As for Starcraft 2, it will come, but I doubt it's in the works, Blizzard is pretty open about these things. Like what's his name said, why fix it if it aint broke (STILL selling millions worth of copies)
- Belgarion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Hey drw2583, I think you may be interested in Hellgate London ( http://www.hellgatelondon.com/ ) it's made by some people who left Blizzard North and looks freaky awesome.
- potato23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, I mean it's cool and all, but SC 2 would be so much more fun that just playing it with nicer graphics. Different units, updates, etc etc.
- evirus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7"all 4 cds needed for install"
bag that, even if i do find my starcraft discs, they are all scratched up beyond beleaf, it takes nearly half an hour for auto-run to run - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3But if you want the true starcraft experience, you already have it. I would think those interested in this mod would be more open to new and different possibilities. Whatever shortcomings of AI and movement, should at least be made up for by Warcraft 3's improved ergonomics & UI. That was really the only beef I had with starcraft anyways, but it's been addressed somewhat by the latest patches (i.e. right-click waypoints). Also, starcraft just wouldn't be starcraft without lot's of units, W3's 90 supply just isn't going to cut it, and the units need to be quick and responsive which might be a problem with the W3 engine, idunno.
Also important is preserving certain dynamics, such as how zealots & zerglings will engage... A wall of zealots should slaughter zerglings, but in the open, zerglings will be able to surround and easily defeat scattered zealots. A single zergling can easily kill a single marine, but a group of marines can slay a steady stream of zerglings. How stuff like that will work out, we'll see... if the mod ever sees the light of day. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As I've played more, I pretty much settled on playing Terran. Nothing I like more than tearing up a Zerg base with goliaths and unsieged tanks, leaving behind bloodied stumps. Used to almost always play protoss, but they kinda lack complexity that make Terran fun. Zerg are fun when you're a little drunk, kekekeke.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Blizzard isn't 4 guys in a garage. They're a pretty big company.
You're the same type of person that says "Stop working on the mage nerf, and fix the servers!" Well, here's some news: The guys making the patches and the guys fixing the servers don't have the same job. They can do both.
Plus, Blizzard has quite a bit of money in the bank, from the HUGE hit games they've released (other than WoW) like SC, WC, and Diablo. With the huge following SC has in Korea, I think Blizzard is afraid of pissing off the fans of Starcraft. Who knows, if Blizzard messed up SC2, a lot of koreans would probably stop playing World of Warcraft. - redneckblues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Reminds me of an often delayed 8 year old FPS. DUKE NUKEM!
- rickcarson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is why Blizzard gets my money.
I switched to a Mac and didn't even need to go out and buy new Diablo 2 cds... because the mac version came on the same cd as the pc version! How cool is that?!
So I've gone back and bought the games I'd skipped, Starcraft, Brood War, Warcraft 3, Frozen Throne.
All their other 'crimes against gaming' are forgiven for that one thing.
I did try the WoW demo... and drew the line at that one because the camera sucks. I mean come on, I've got a Wolf chewing my leg off and the camera thinks I want an extreme closeup of a leaf?!?!? Whoever wrote that part of the code has got a perverted shrubbery fetish or something. (I'll say it before anyone else does: "Ni!") - Angmar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For the music and sound effects. RTFA
rise|SCL:
You're using the Starcraft and Brood War expansion CDs for the music, correct?
Konstantin|PR:
That is correct.
Skizot|PR:
And sound effects. - Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Haha! Protoss ftw!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't know anymore, this has dragged on long enough with little or nothing show for it. And who knows how many of the creative minds that worked on starcraft are even left.
- artgon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2god I miss the golden days of starcraft, when it was at its peak.
- VSKBadCRC, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Or maybe because StarCraft is still a huge success for Blizzard, despite it's age. Check out Korea sometime, Starcraft is a national sport. Why would a game company want to add on to a game that's still raking in millions of dollars even after 10 years since it's launched.
That isn't to say that they won't further develop the franchise, they've just got their hands full with World of Warcraft, and I hope they're working on a new Diablo game as well (I've heard it's been in development for quite some time). - jasonvw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3mass Goliaths = pwnage
- BasouKazuma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Warcraft 3 was a step backwards from StarCraft. In StarCraft you were allowed to have a lot of more soldiers on the battlefield which made the battles way more epic. True, Warcraft is set in pre-technological times so it was more accurate to have such a low limit on soldiers.
The more soldiers under your command the better. - drw2583, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I would rather see a version of diablo that is like Oblivion but with a story line and universe I actually care to complete / be a part of
- MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i think this would be cool, but till then is there a high res mod for regular SC ?
- kRYPT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Umm.. I think that was the idea. Same feel .. but new engine, new maps and a new story.
- aThing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You don't *need* those though.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Then set upload maximum to 0KB/sec
