Starcraft MMO? No way. Blizzard DENIES any new MMO.
mmorpg.qj.net — Here is a very recent post reporting that Blizzard denying any new MMO besides WOW expansions. This is hopeful for us Starcraft fans. Just as most people realize that a non-RTS Starcraft would destroy the series, I think we can credit the guys at Blizzard that they know this too.

- ryancalderoni, on 10/12/2007, -28/+8Recently, Vivendi gave a presentation to Wall Street. A lot of things were mentioned, but this announcement was a standout: "All Blizzard franchises will become MMOGs." And when they said all, they meant ALL! Along with the bold announcement, they also claim that they now have a model to come up with MMOGs in 3 years, and that they are also backed up by a $50 Million budget.
They would be presenting two types of MMOG markets aimed for everyone from the busy executive to the hardcore gamers. The first is the long session games (more than two hours per session) and short session games (less than two hour sessions.) They will also be rolling out a bunch of short session games under the Sierra Online brand. An example is FreeStyle, a pick-up basketball online game scheduled for 2007 release. No details on pricing model for the short session games were announced though.
The "more games and less gamers per game" scenario is something that seems to not be a threat to the company, well if stockbrokers knew more about gaming, then maybe they would have booed the idea right at that moment (ha, ha)!
Blizzard quickly denied the rumors by saying "that rumor is not true in regard to Blizzard...We (Blizzard) believe that the rumor circulating about this subject is based on a misinterpretation of information provided to industry analysts." They also denied that they are developing any MMOGs as of the moment by saying loud and clear that they " do not currently have any MMO development plans beyond the upcoming expansion for World of Warcraft, and furthermore, we don't have any intentions to focus on only one genre or platform with our future games." Nice move indeed!

A lot can change in that time. This is almost a year old.
/Just letting y'all know.
Edit: I didn't see all the posts below that said the same thing. My bad.
/Still burying as inaccurate as something this old in the gaming industry means absolutely nothing to me. - sfpfc, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16A starcraft MMO would be stupid, what would you do, buy new guns every new level?
I doubt it will be SC2 because that will compete with WoW which gives them a monthly fee from 8 million gamers (someone do the math for all the different countries out there please)
My guess is it will either be a console game but there is a chance it could be Starcraft 2. I am so glad they canceled Ghost, it was wayyyy to late for that game to come out. - Tunguska, on 10/12/2007, -10/+9An MMORTS, anyone?
- Snoods, on 10/12/2007, -8/+41It would ruin the series? StarCraft is just one game with an expansion, besides they made a MMO out of the Warcraft RTS, I can't see how it would ruin StarCraft any more than WoW ruined Warcraft.
- Daiken, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Thank goodness. Starcraft needs to remain a real-time strategy game (or at least partly).
EDIT: I take back what I said, this article is old, so everything is still up in the air. - Tiak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@Daiken
Well, they obviously aren't too dedicate to the idea of only-RTS starcraft... What exactly do you think Ghost was supposed to be? - Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2They would be foolish not to capitalize on the success of World of Warcraft and refuse to make an MMO on the Universe of Starcraft, replacing the milk teet of WoW with the bourbon teet of UoS, and get all the subscription money in return. Lame, yes. Not economically wise, no. Are you people capitalists or not, because it sure as hell seems not.
- latova, on 10/12/2007, -10/+32digg this comment down... THE HYPNOTOAD DEMANDS IT.

"A starcraft MMO would be stupid, what would you do, buy new guns every new level?"
How is that different from the other mmo's where you buy a new sword every level?
I personally think it would be better than some of the other MMO's out there if it was done right, the problem is there would be little to no real way of doing it right. - Satertek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I dream of a Starcraft MMO FPS/RTS hybrid...
But from the sound of it, Starcraft 2 will contain MMO elements (information was "misinterpreted"), but not be the typical MMO. This could be interesting. - chingy1788, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Starcraft as an MMORPG releast sooner than Starcraft 2
I would be pissed
They better have plans for an SC2, its been 9 years!
Addiction to MMORPGs leads to death, much like Addiction to drugs
So people, Please Don't Do MMORPGs - Rayonic, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1>>"A starcraft MMO would be stupid, what would you do, buy new guns every new level?"
>"How is that different from the other mmo's where you buy a new sword every level?"
Because in a fantasy game you can have an endless variety weapons/armor/etc. In WoW, I might want to replace my Flailing Shortsword of the Monkey with a Highlord's Hammer of Doom. How does that kind of thing work out in a sci-fi setting? There are only so many "tech upgrades" you can put in the game before it gets silly. - Orlex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2006/06/16

- ryancalderoni, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1We should give Blizzard more credit, they know just as well as we do that a SC MMO would be LAMO.
- TnShun, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14The "very recent post" is posted on Jun 15, 2006.
- ryancalderoni, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3whoops, i did read that but i didn't process it enough, it's not 2006 anymore is it, ;)
i don't think that this invalidates the validity of the article though- HerrEisenheim, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Did you think it was from the future?
- MisterFlaut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes it does, because you made it sound like this article was in direct response to yesterday's story.
It's misleading.
They haven't confirmed one or even slightly given hints to one, either, so all the sites have shoddy credibility at this point.
Plus old articles like this shouldn't be submitted considering the industry is an ever evolving process.
Case in point: I could submit an article from 2003 stating that Blizzard would not make another warcraft game after Warcraft 3.
Companies can say whatever they want, and while it might be applicable to the time in which they said it, their choices are made on profit. If the MMO is the way to go, that's what they'll do. I'm sure they can find a way to make a starcraft MMO a non-RPG type, but more of a combat/strategy based system.
And that would be fine by me.
- Ret0x, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Agreed. The article is from 2006, but I think it shows that the rumor for a SC MMO is just that, a rumor. Blizzard stated that they are not currently (at the time of the article) producing any new MMOs. If they were making a SC MMO and were announcing it this month in Korea, they would probably want to have a little bit of it developed. Enough to show a few early screenshots. A year later, do you think they have enough developed to show any of it to anyone? I doubt it. They'd have to go through pre-production, deciding on story and how the game is played. Like SW Galaxies? Or EVE Online? That could take a year by itself, I'm sure.
- Nimec, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I agree that the article is old... but you have to remember that on http://www.blizzard.com/jobopp/ they are looking for
Lead Engine Programmer – Next-Gen MMO
Lead Tools Programmer – Next-Gen MMO
Lead Technical Artist – Next-Gen MMO
So to say that the other article is false because of this old article saying that they are not working on any MMO's just isn't true. Clearly even on their own website they are advertising jobs to work on this upcoming MMO.
Is it Starcraft? Probably not, but at this point I don't think it can be completely ruled out regardless of how improbable it sounds. We'll just have to see on the 19th :)

- NGliam, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1i am open to the idea of WoS, but I didn't believe the 'proof' for a minute. Mainly because there was no actual proof, and because a starcraft mmo being released 10 years after the only other game in the series does not make sense at all. It will be a RTS, I'd put money (or my soul.. I can spare that) on this.
- leetleo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18This is reassuring. I find that I have less and less time for WoW and other games that require a large time investment. I want to log in, build a few pylons, and call it a day.
- Nudar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31You've not enough minerals.

- koolaiddude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3do they even mention sc anywhere in that article?
- jrlcopy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3I think a starcraft MMO would be amazing :), even better if I could pay 15$ and bounce back and forth between wow and wos.

- Zaius, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12nuclear launch detected.
- Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is almost a year old. Blizzards plans could have changed.
- knaps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm sort of hoping that a few ideas from the Natural Selection mod for Half Life will be in the new game. It was pretty fun, you could play from both perspectives (first-person, rts-commander). I'm glad it's not an MMO though, Starcraft is fun enough without that element in it.
- Dugg2Death, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I will guarantee you they won't release another MMO until WoW is on a huge decline. RPG sure, MMO.. no way. Simple business, why compete with yourself in a market you already dominate when you can dominate someone else in another market.
- Patogrande, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm glad. Blizzard wants anything but another MMO at this time.
- soot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Blizzard won't release another MMO game, not yet. They've only released their first expansion pack for World of Warcraft, and judging by the sole fact that there are over six million registered users on that ***** game I'd say they still have alot of money to beat out of it.
Releasing World of StarCraft or whatever you want to call it now would see players abandoning WoW in massive numbers, just for the sheer fact that alot of people don't want to be dual-subscribed to two seperate MMOs that each require rediculous investments of money and time to get anything great or substantial out of them. That's the thing about these kinds of games, studios putting out multiple seperate MMO titles on the same quality tier are engaging in something that's entirely counter-productive to their mission to draw profits.
I say just release StarCraft 2, because really, isn't that what everybody wants?
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD THINK OF SEOUL - Saccharin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4So a year old article which doesn't even mention Starcraft?

Posting an article From June of last year to debunk a source from May 2007? Bravo
Burried - Unremarkable, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To be fair, even if they were to confirm that they were developing an SC MMO, it hardly means it'll be released the following day. In all likelihood, it would still be a few years development.
- jockser, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1so the platform version could still happend. yes!
- jockser, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2so the platform version could still happen. yes!
- chrgrose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It would appear that SC would be really tough to make an MMO out of but for those who know about the storylines and the details behind the special abilities, weaponry, etc. of the starcraft characters would probably conclude otherwise. Certainly some units probably would either be somehow subsidiary or unplayable (like reavers, observers, overlords, broodlings, maybe tanks) or would require some method of collaberation with multiple players (eg. carriers, battlecruisers, science vessels, etc.) but other characters could be very versatile and scalable characters for an MMORPG like ghosts, defilers, queens, dark archons, high templars. And one could certainly expand on the unit abilities of more basic melee/range units like hydralisks, marines, firebats, dark templars, zealots, mutalisks.
Personally I think it would be cool if, for instance, if I were a defiler, I could spawn 'pets' (a la, WOW) like larva and zerglings and at higher levels maybe I could spawn an ultralisk. Or maybe I could be a ghost in charge of a small group of marines.
Anyways, all you need are creative minds and I think they have that at Blizzard. OTOH, I want SC2 more. - ldburton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2from the article:

uh, very recent post?
it even mentions "the upcoming world of warcraft expansion".
what the *****? am i missing something here or is this a very OLD post? - ThantiK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As an avid World of Warcraft fan who sat outside of an EBGames for 6 hours - If you follow blizzards press, they deny things all the time like this. About 6-7 months before World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade was released, they said NO WAY IN HELL were the draenei going to be playable as an alliance race. Ditto for these 'blood elves'
Then lo and behold - blood elves and draenei. - SwiftJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Off topic, but does anyone else HATE clicking on a link that leads to QJ? Nothing like an ad while you're in the middle of a sentence!
- abCharlie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1its all true, or at least it was true that blizzard was developing a starcraft mmo, world of starcraft i think. gamespot.com did a article on it and had a bunch of screenshots a long time ago.

Post buried for being a complete digg whore douche. - Inglorion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm very relieved to hear that, because great disappointment struck me as I heard about the SC MMO, which I have no interest in, while I eagerly await a new-and-improved SC RTS.
I hunger for battle! - Jakerius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1SC MMO would be fantastic. As a person who picked up Starcraft and the Warcraft series almost on release, and as a WoW player, I can definitely see how good a Starcraft MMO would be. They turned Warcraft into a brilliant and successful online RPG, so what makes you think they couldn't do the same with Starcraft?
Old news, marked as inaccurate. - rexxars, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'd actually like a MMORTS based on Starcraft.
- kenok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Release Starcraft 2 as an RTS, then Blizzard can go MMORPG-ize it! (Oh yeah... release Diablo 3 first too... )
- smek2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Starcraft MMO? No way. Blizzard DENIES any new MMO." — told ya.
I always find it amusing how fans claiming to know what's best for a series. You're a consumer. Not the creator.
Destroying the StarCraft series? What? You mean, like World of Warcraft destroyed the Warcraft series, yes?
Ah, nevermind, keep drooling over rumors and fanboy-fantasies and keep telling yourself you know what's best for your beloved series.- plnegative1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1..... a starcraft mmorpg would destroy the series only because of the multitudes of people hoping for starcraft II. warcraft, on the other hand, was not ruined because the mmoprg came after warcraft's THIRD installment of the series. it's cool that they created warcraft in a different "world", but it didn't ruin it. i know for a fact, though, that a lot of people in WoW have never played the original RTS games...

My bank are dealing with it. I'm still waiting for the gimps at Blizzard to return emails. Had to write to their webmaster because they're impossible to get a hold of on the phone or by web form. Have to be a subscriber to contact them by web form.
I'd love to get a hold of one of their European corporate phone numbers if anyone can help.
Oh, and if you by an up-levelled character on ebay then remember that it was probably purchased and is being sold fraudulently.
Oh yeah, and ... ***** BLIZZARD, they just love to help the fraudsters and hide from any responsibility. - mykos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I hope their next WoW expansion is all new content for levels 20-69. Kinda sucks that the longest part of the game is the same experience every time.
- Lnomis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1They say MMO, but does that necessarily mean MMO-RPG?
The subscription model has proved to be incredibly successful for blizzard, so it would not surprise me one bit to see them rolling all their new games out with huge amounts of online content.
If it is a "next-gen" MMO, is it possible that they could be experimenting with a new genre?- Darksaber11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Quite some time ago (err... a year or two I think) a group of gamers over on the Wizards.com MTG boards had a lengthy discussion about weather or not you could make a MMORTS. At the time we were talking about a Magic: the Gathering MMO, but the idea carries over to this.
Basically, we decided it just couldn't work. When all you have in a game is you (ie standard MMO) you can pop in and out whenever you want, and the only time this is a bad thing is when your guild needs you for a raid or something. This doesn't translate so well to the resource/territory based strategy of RTS games. What would happen to your army when you log out?
Just my two cents... I really hope SC2 is an RTS.
- Darksaber11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Quite some time ago (err... a year or two I think) a group of gamers over on the Wizards.com MTG boards had a lengthy discussion about weather or not you could make a MMORTS. - chrismgtis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How about all of you just shut the hell up with the articles proclaiming that this or that is going to happen when it's not coming from the right source in the first place. - ReinhartTR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is great news because as you mentioned, making this into an MMOG would likely ruin the series.
Besides, it makes no business sense for them to make another MMOG, at this stage of the game they would be competing primarily with themselves. - GooksBirman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If any of you read gamepro or gameinformer, you'd know that blizzard said they're working on a new MMO. plus, people lie in the game industry
