- doddilus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"How bout they add some freakin' MAC support!!!"
they can barely keep it running on windows - VladDrac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Sony ***** over customers?! Come one folks. Let's be serious.
- Oxygen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"and made irrelevant the years of work they have invested into their in-game personas"
That cracked me up. - smiley2billion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Did they fix that one big bug it had yet? You know... that "This game is boring as hell" bug.
Honestly, I thought I'd like the game, an online RPG style Star Wars game? Come on, that's gotta be awesome right?! And to think, the store wouldn't even take my game back after my free month was up. (I say free, but I really mean that I spent the whole time mining rocks out in the middle of nowhere so I could create some items... 1 month later I had a slingshot made, I think.) - jaspinDroid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4The wookie sodomy cantina was the straw that broke the camel's back.
- Greymarch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I played SWG when it was first released, but quit a few months later. I have returned to SWG for one simply reason...because I can now play a jedi!
To me, Star Wars is all about the force. It's about jedi. Its about the quasi-religious fight between good and evil that makes Star Wars so compelling. If I am going to cough-up $15 a month, I better damn well be able to play a Jedi.
In the original version, you couldnt even play a Jedi. Then, after several months, Sony put in code that would allow you to become a Jedi, but it was an EXTREMELY DIFFICULT AND TIME CONSUMING PROCESS. I kid you not...the average player had to grind for 8 hours a day, for 6 months straight, to become a Jedi. It was absurd. It wasnt a game, it was more like a job.
Oh sure, now the game is loaded with Jedi, but that's fine by me. I really dont care what other people play. I am happy with my character, and that is what really matters.
The SWG community has left the game in droves. Who knows how many players actually remain. Sony will never reveal those numbers. I doubt the new infusion of players will make up for those who left.
Will Sony accept a lower amount of players for the future of SWG? I hope so. There are plenty of MMORPGs that dont have a huge player base. I just hope the game doesnt completely disappear. The online community deserves a multiplayer online Star Wars game. - crawfordbay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have been with SWG since the beginning and this NGE was definitely the last straw. Good job LucasArts and Sony. Retards.
- DewayneSmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lets hear Alex rant about this one.....
- JFalt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have played SWG on and off for 2.5 years. Tucked deep within that piece of trash that they are still pawning off for $15 a month is a tremendous game. Each publish (they're on 26 now I think) they have gotten further and further away from it.
This game was so ambitious when it first hit. The 32 unique professions and countless hybrid combos were beautiful, though expectedly initially unbalanced. Additionally, the game lacked in alot of content --> huge playable worlds that were mostly void of anything to do. That being said, the basis of the game was huge and awe inspiring. With some work on power balancing and filling out of content and story arc, the game should have been golden 6 months after release.
Instead, Sony has consistently gone in the opposite direction. They have steadily dumbed down the game through nerfs, all out removals and now complete re-writes and still they have avoided the same issues that have haunted the game from day 1.
The truly ridiculous part is the bugs. This game was buggy at the beginning. That happens. This game is 2.5 years down the road and their are still show stopping bugs. There are *constantly* regression faults in the patches. Being a Software Engineer myself, who works on similar sized projects to SWG, I know that bugs can slam you in the face from some place you were never expecting and havent directly touched, but that is why you save half your development time for testing. I dont see how heads arent rolling out the door of Sony's complex on a daily basis. I truly doubt that they do any testing on the patches before they release them. How is this acceptable at a huge company like Sony?
Admittedly, I am a sucker for punishment. I keep going back, so there is no one to be disappointed with but myself. I know what to expect each time I return, but for some reason I keep coming back anyway. I hope someday they get it right.
In conclusion, I rejoined the game yesterday with the 10 day pass after having taken 4 months off. After going through the initial tutorial on the new system with my guy for about 2 hours, I started doing quests. About the 5th quest I did, I hit a game stopping bug that causes SWG to reset everytime I try to log into that character. This is apparently a well known issue on the forums....Some things never change... - SirBriggs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1George Lucas ruining something great? How weird...
- NegroSuave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1E I still play... regularly... And I think it reall isnt for everyone... Im having a good tim edoing what i do (I mostly focus on flying ships) They got rid of a lot of the more boring elements (Having to grind for exp more than anything) and made a lot more streamlined. Jedi's running around like crazy, but they complain because they aren't the baddest of the bad.
I played WoW in beta and a bit after that and I wasnt really all that impressed. People swear by it but its never done anything for me. So I play starwars.
Anyhow rambling, SOE killed goodwilll. Thats never going to come back and they are stuck wiht the stigma of being a crappy game no matter they do. - lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ffxi, the greatest game of all time if you speak japanese.
- evilunleashed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wait, Sony made a move to screw it's existing customers only to attempt to bring in new suckers with something that is even less desirable? How is this surprising?
- Moose_Head, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The game sucked so hard its not even funny.
- monfoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sony is sure stepping on there D#$%s lately if they keep this up they will go the way of Atari and GM they may not totally die but they will drop market share big time. After the DRM BS I have already decided to boycott all of there products this is just icing on the cake. People will only be sheeple for so long.
- uacheesehead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's terrible. Sounds like LucasArts and Sony really screwed up something with a lot of potential.
- tranix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Need:
1. Less grinding: Stop raising the level cap.
2. Lots/fair PvP: Make the game all about balanced PvP in the end.
I was a loyal DAoC subscriber for years until they broke rule #1.
The second rule is subjective, as long as I can tell they're trying. - coolgeek61813, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i agree its not a death spiral it just makes the people in the PR departments jobs impossible
- Nootay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i dropped out of that on the last combat revamp about 1.5 years ago. Their developers are screwing themselves
- EV1CR8R, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Another compelling reason to buy SONY.....NOT.
psp, root kit, DRM out the ying yang
I'll spend my money elsewhere ty. - SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sony's Smash and Grab of Matrix Online wrecked that (although it was already slipping). Why should their rubbish MMORPG department do any better with another major movie lisence?
- AndroidKing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0apparently Lucas arts also feels everyone should be playing WoW. they are just helping the galaxy players that couldn't let go along.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Leave it to Sony Online Entertainment to ruin franchise (EverQuest) and potential franchise (Star Wars) games. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.
- heatmiser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>> George Lucas ruining something great
You think he gives a rats' ass about some silly game? I'm pretty sure the details of SWG are right below "..need to wash the car this weekend" on his mental "to do list" - ironmonkee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I beta tested for SWG and it seems like Sony boned the game since day one. I remember finding the game on store shelves within four weeks of receiving the beta test invite and the copy of the game. It was horrible! The retail box was in the same state as my copy of the beta was! I decided never to play it then after that.
Fast forward to a few weeks ago. I've been playing two MMORPGs since beta/day 1: City of Heroes (which I loved but wound up leaving earlier this summer because of issues with the game) and World of Warcraft (which I play currently and regularly). I decided to give SWG a try again so I downloaded the 10-day trial thinking that they got it right finally.
Was I ever wrong. I had that abysmal piece of software off of my PC in less than 3 hours. The only thing they got right was to include the ability to pilot ships from the beginning. Other than that, the game is worse than it was when I played it originally years earlier. If anyone wants to find a piece of software worse than Sony's Rootkit, buy and play this piece of junk. This game definitely falls into the realm of malware. - subhuman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg effect :(
- kimos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0NCSoft did the same thing with City of Heroes. They introduced City of Villains and included the PvP aspect, but then found out that the way that all of the heroes were setup caused ridiculous imbalances in PvP (not surprising since the game was totally PvE). They changed everything so drastically to coincide with their new game designed to attract new players, that long time Heroes abandoned both games...
- bshock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sony product. Nuff said.
- Majin_Raditz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually I like the improvements. I just wish they would improve the graphics.
- micaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I bought the game when it launched, and it was one of the worst MMOs that I've ever played. I gave the free trial a whirl a couple of weeks ago to see the changes, and it still sucks. This game is just ass.
- panic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good. Everyone associated to Sony Station is a piece of *****. This includes people who play the game, people who sit on their forums, and mainly their customer service. Their customer service was the #1 reason I dropped my account.
- aznboi04k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i heard bad reviews about this game.
- earlysound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have a feeling the WoW servers are going to start getting even more packed! hehe.
That's too bad though. I know it's cheesy, but people do put a lot of time and effort into something when they enjoy it. And to have it so drastically changed is unfair to those people. My thoughts, anyway... - binarypower, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BRING BACK THE OLD SYSTEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- wvwwvv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good digg, but surprisingly, 'Wired' is about 8 days late on posting this news, refunds were handed out on December 1st, I believe (Might have been in the article, didn't spend time reading it.) that the news might even be last month's news.. Literally.
- ek3s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What's with all the Sony bashing now?
pshh.. PS3 ftw - Nation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I got a free 10 day trial here: http://www.fileshack.com/file.x?fid=7994
I think I have played 1 hour or maybe 2.
I played in the beta ... it was fun, but really buggy. I was shocked when they announced it would go live in a few days. The old version seemed to be a lot more to offer & was better even with all the bugs and all. - turgiddahlia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LucasArts needs to get back to what it used to do best: adventure games. The hell with Star Wars.
- autobahn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When is someone going to release an MMORPG that isn't so "fantasy"?
I guess everyone wants to be in some fantasy world, but WoW doesn't tickle my fancy, I don't want to pretend I'm a star wars character, etc.
It would be cool if there was a "real life" style MMO, which maybe had make-believe elements, but wasn't so reliant on the fantasy idea. Maybe something like simcity online, but instead of building towns you had to function inside of them.... Or something? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I played SWG for 1.5 years. I had so much fun before the first combat rebalance crap. I was a god among gods and I soloed krayts daily. Then my perfect own all world was ripped away from me and I cancled my subscription.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Next, they'll turn away all the Matrix Online fans who have been there from the beginning by updating it so that everyone can be Neo...
Oh wait, there are no fans. Nevermind. - epicahab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Never played but the outcry of the fans seems "as if thousands of voices suddenly cried out in agony, and then went silent."
At least it is bringing noobs to my MMO of choice - Project Entropia. :) - etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Regarding the death spiral - I don't know... their sales are certainly going to hurt... you can't get away with crap these days (what with the internet and all). It's not like the 80's, or the 90's for that matter. Luckily, Sony still has a good name in TV technology.
- Incognito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nah man Jedi should be hard to get to. Its a special powerful class. Now its just some junk along with "A blue ***** halo over your head"
***** awesome marketing - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0404'd
- hitman619, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cancelled my account about 2 weeks ago because of NGE. Been playing since day 1. SOE really ***** what I considered a somewhat and at time VERY enjoyable/fun game. I'm very unhappy with SOE probably won't buy any other SOE MMO's. They really screwed SWG royally.
ION-SLAYER ONE (Bria) Jedi - neris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hi, i have downloaded 10day trial SWG, but im just wonder if any one knows any private free server?
if any one made it :P
any way i just want to try out more when 10days trial, and later buy the game and pay every month, cause my friends student "In game" he did play swg, and he just stoped playing cause swg owners did ***** up the swg with new update, i dont know what they did, so i want to try out or some one can tell me what problem they have right now? :P - Smokezz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sony didn't screw this one up... this was Lucasarts doing.
- kramit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i loved this game when it first came out, they should of fixed the bugs and not ***** with the gameplay structure. (especily the sit down and fly 2 miles away from where you sat down bug)
- tobtoh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I played SWG almost from the start and the 30 or so character classes was one of the best things about it although Sony always had trouble maintaining a good balance in the game. I played several characters with the final one being a Master Doctor - I actually become one of about 4 major buff (stat enhancement) manufacturers on the Chilastra server and hundres of millions of credits from doing this.
At the time I decided to quit ,and started selling my credits via IGE (about 14 months ago I think), they made several changes to gameplay. Wow - talk about people leaving the game. Whereas once Naboo spaceport was a bustling epicenter, it was now almost deserted. And it was very obvious that people weren't playing anymore because the price of credits started rapidly dropping from $20/million to $6/million. Shortly after I managed to offload my credits (I made over US$1000 :), IGE pretty much stopped buying credits.
I don't believe the SWG universe really recovered from such a mass exodus and if another exodus has occured, the SWG galaxies must be a virtual graveyard by now. A pity - cos SWG was quite a fun game to play. -
