- ShiftAWS, on 07/01/2008, -0/+11Keep in mind everyone its not only blizzard. It's apple's fault. They took out the compatibility for 256 colors on the nvidia gfx cards (and some others) which causes all 256 color games to break (fallout 1&2 are examples). The only way for blizzard to fix this is rewriting all the graphics for another range which would take forever. All apple has to do is put 256 colors support back into the drivers.
So complain to apple!
-end rant - Blazeoptimus, on 07/01/2008, -1/+8Srsly. Blizzard has done a good job of keeping these games modern on the mac OS. However it appears apple has removed the 256 color pallet from there drivers, which kills these decade old games. I'm not sure why they felt they had to, but it fails now.
- jkr801, on 07/01/2008, -1/+7dugg for i want to play diablo 2 again
- igob8a, on 07/01/2008, -6/+11Games on a mac? Srsly?
- Zamfir, on 07/01/2008, -0/+4Jammin' some Diablo 2 LoD on Linux via wine... runs awesome.
- carolinaws, on 07/01/2008, -0/+3Ok, I installed the game under Parallels and it works! However, the windows is really teeny tiny. And I can't open my old saved game so I have to start over from scratch.
I guess I'll wait until Apple releases a fix. Oh well. - yargthepirate, on 07/01/2008, -0/+2Guess 256-color drivers fit under the category of "unneeded code" Apple's trying to prune out...
- carolinaws, on 07/01/2008, -0/+2I cannot emphasize enough that you will spend a ridiculous amount of time doing an Archive and Install. I did one this week and it took me about 5 hours for the process to complete. If you have done any customization to your system expect to spend time swapping files between copies.
My MBP is set up with a custom version of PHP (for Zend Framework), MySQL and sites hosted in /var/www/ so they match my servers. Not to mention copying several gigs of data back from the Previous System, Dock customizations, Parallels and Adobe had to be reinstalled.
I love Diablo II as much as anyone but I think a word of caution is in order before trying such a process as this.
I only wish Apple would "fix" the 256 color issue.
I'm going to try installing it and running it on Windows via Parallels. I'll update this post with results. - tikibaloni, on 07/01/2008, -1/+3I hate apple, cant play starcraft nymoar!!!! I used to play so much, nao, no more :(
- inactive, on 07/01/2008, -2/+3epic fail apple

ed - PseudoKarma, on 07/01/2008, -1/+2To everybody who responds to these kinds of threads with the standard "well get windows durrr" response, go ***** yourself.
- inactive, on 07/01/2008, -3/+4oh i love this 2 games... good info!
- choual, on 07/01/2008, -1/+210.5.4 out and still no fix, i need Diablo 2 now !!
- alexwad, on 11/10/2008, -0/+1fixed - but apparently so only for the macbook pro.
- zoomtechtv, on 07/01/2008, -1/+2Could always run Bootcamp, and get the games for windows.
- ShiftAWS, on 07/01/2008, -1/+2Bootcamp doesn't help because apple took out the 256 color compatibility out of the nvidia drivers so it will either crash a lot or just not work on Bootcamp.
- carolinaws, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Ok, last reply. I got it to work and actually be playable on my 17" MacBook Pro but only through Windows XP running Parallels. Here is what you need to do, assuming you have installed Diablo II in your XP VM. If you want to restore a saved game from your Mac copy the "Save" folder from your Mac installation to your Diablo 2 folder on your VM and rename it to "save" (lower case).
Here you go:
Quit everything.
If you have tons of icons on your desktop, clean it up.
Set the screen resolution to 800x600 (stretched).
Launch Parallels
Once Parallels is launched, launch Windows XP and then launch Diablo II
I know, the video quality isn't the best but it's Diablo 2.
Enjoy. - hachre, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1This seems to be fixed in 10.5.5, can anyone confirm this?
- Skyhoper, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of nerds took off their white headphones suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.
- mrdirector, on 12/20/2008, -0/+0Any new updates? I really want to play!
- asbjornu, on 07/03/2008, -0/+0Here's the corresponding Apple Discussion thread:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID ... - Jedidiah2008, on 09/30/2008, -0/+0I can confirm that it has NOT BEEN FIXED. I'm running OS X 10.5.5 and there still isn't 256-color support.
I patched the full Install after buying the game today.
I blame Apple not Blizzard! :/ - wbjudd, on 07/01/2008, -2/+2Another vote for a fix!
- ZerosElipticus, on 07/01/2008, -2/+2Apple please please fix this. I'm not sure what issues were "fixed" by dropping 256 color support. You couldn't select it from the menu anyway. It just allowed these old games to run properly.
I don't want to keep rolling these drivers back to 10.5.2 just so I can play games. - ShiftAWS, on 07/01/2008, -2/+1I found a way to fix this! (not really a fix but if you really want to play SC or diablo its worth it).
1.Backup your whole hdd restart and boot with OS X cd/dvd
2.Go through TOS and agreement and when givin the choice of a HDD to install OS X onto click options on the bottom left and select "Archive and install". This will give you a fresh copy of OSX with all your old stuff.e
3.Software update the fresh system but DON'T install 10.5.4 go to the apple site and download 10.5.2. Install all the other updates you want. - gozeronline, on 07/01/2008, -4/+1O rly? There's games on Windows other than WoW and the Sims?
