- AnteChronos, on 10/10/2007, -7/+36I see FFXIII as being one of the few franchises that are capable of actually driving console sales. It's one of the reasons that I got a PS3, myself. I actually steered away from the Wii60 sentiment that's so common, and went with a Wii and a PS3. My reasoning was that most of the 360 games that are worth buying a console for are going to be released for the PC, too. My PC's a pretty decent gaming rig, so a 360 seems almost redundant in my case.
- seneyr, on 10/10/2007, -7/+321) Duh
2) That's the problem of a company having its fingers in too many pies
3) Not surprising that Square-Enix would be upset about PS3 sales performance. FFXIII is costing them a ton of money and if they can't recoup... That's going to strain the relationship with Sony a lot. - BlackKnight6, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18I didn't know Resistance was considered "AAA", maybe relatively...
- unchainedin5150, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14hopefully FFXIII ends up on the 360, cause I sure don't wanna dish out all that money for a Blu-Ray Player that can play games.
- ched, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Sony clearly need Square far more than Square need Sony at this point..
Sony has positioned the PS3 as the premium console, without delivering enough premium games for it. That may well change in time, but the 360 is making the PS3 look pretty bad at the moment. - alvinrod, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10You'd honestly think Square would love the PS3. This is the company that made games that should span at most one or two discs stretch out to four CDs from the sheer amount of CGI they included in their games. The PS3 allows them something like three times as much space to fill up with bloated pre-rendered crap that doesn't add much to the game.
The can piss and moan about the PS3 as much as they like but what are they going to do? They won't develop for the Wii which doesn't have the computational power (nothing against that) to match their tastes for the FF franchise and the Xbox sells about as well in Japan as Nazi flags in Isreal. Just shut up and make your overrated game already. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Ya, thats why all the other devices that have tried to "do it all" from the living room have been so successful right?
- Diggtatorship, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8None of what you said is true. If Square came out tomorrow and said, "all of our games are multi-platform," then Sony would just have to grin and bear it. The days of the N64 and PSX are long since gone and Square does not answer to Sony.
Square inexplicably has some kind of loyalty to Sony. They need to let go and watch the cash flow like a river - Goya, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5If Square released the next FF on 360 id pick it up in a heartbeat. Id probably even buy older ones re-released if it did not mean buying a new console.
- greenmountain, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5The Toaster oven is about to seriously burn the as yet unarmed PS3.
Games. The machine needs games, not more excuses from game developers about "Sony Marketing".
I mean really. What person even tangentially involved in gaming does not know the PS3 is a gaming machine?
That is a ridiculous comment. - GawtMilk, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Final Fantasy is the fourth best selling gaming franchise, after Mario, Pokemon and the Sims. The previous Final Fantasy outsold Halo by about 1.8 million copies.
- emjaymj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4But but... he said he knew for a FACT. OMFG! I think I found a discrepancy on the Internet!
- Optimaximal, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5More too the point, they didn't just invent such proprietary failures, but they drove them with such agressive marketing and profit chasing that everyone ignored them. Sony just never seem to be able to learn from their mistakes.
- Optimaximal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4That will never happen, lest Square be forced out of the japanese gaming market completely. Moving away from either Sony or Nintendo would alienate their core market because the Xbox is viewed as some ***** up demented red-headed stepchild over there.
- xXMetalJesusXx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I forgot to add PS2 to my list...it still gets some game time once and a while
- CiDaemon, on 10/10/2007, -5/+8Hi there. Did you know Sony invented the Betamax tape and dozens of other near-obsolete formats/devices? I guess they had to get it right at least once next to all of thier failures previously.
- xXMetalJesusXx, on 10/10/2007, -9/+12The only reason why I have not picked up the PS3 is because I disliked the way Sony forced Blu-ray on gamers. I'll stick with my 360, Wii, PC and Mac (what....Mac's can game too......................sorta......) lol
- ButterBuddha, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4"What is this pie that you speak of?" - Homer Simpson
- daridave, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4They WON'T "recoup". The biggest laugh will be on Konami, though, with MGS4. Years of work, ***** of money spent on the title... for what? a few million copies? The line will never be green. As far as SONY goes, I agree about what Squenix sais, however it's been almost one year already. 1/5th of the usual life cycle of a console. I think the "too late" date is approaching real fast... and while they may want to push it for 10 years, the competition won't ...
- apoc06, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_games#Franchises
75million > 50 million
final fantasy has been around for alot longer than GTA. - onlynameicanget, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Hitoshi Sakimoto did an excellent job on FFXII, in my opinion. He did the soundtracks for Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy Tactics, both of which also deserve a listen.
- cultist667, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Its too early for bluray the market is not ready.
- sakuraz, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Well, if you've played it, it's AAA
If you haven't, it's not.
Gears graphics hype pretty much trumped Resistance gameplay, from what I've heard.
Where did Gameplay vs Graphics go:S - kenvsryu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Please make the game already and don't have any delays.
- TrancePhreak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I played the Resistance demo and it felt like it was really really un-polished. The gameplay and visuals were worse than most free FPS games on the net.
- geartype2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2wait, are you trying to hit on sony because they are trying to be *buzzword of the year* innovative in their format choices?
- Natetendo83, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Sony really needs to stop up this holiday season. Fanboys may hate this but it's true: Halo 3 will be huge and will be big for MS all season. Nintendo has a new Mario and Smash Bros within a month of each other. Sony's big titles so far this fall have been met with mediocre reviews and reception. SquareEnix's president is right on here, Sony needs to find a marketing strategy and stick with it if they want PS3's in more people's homes
- geartype2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2in the wii argument box?
- unchainedin5150, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3True. Dunno if FFXII is gonna be worth $500 plus the game, so lets hope 360 sees XIII.
- LocalDocal, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Er, somehow, I think your list is a little skewed. Mainly because I know for a fact that there are many games that sold better than the FF series other than the ones you mentioned. For example, oh say, the Grand Theft Auto series?
- ninjasquirrel, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3minidisc .... shudder"
- Julz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2if a company has its fingers in a bunch of pies it increases the chance of one of those fingers being burnt
- CiDaemon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Jesusphone.
- afx1, on 10/10/2007, -7/+8Good criticism! I can't figure out if the 360 is a toaster or game machine, seeing as it doesn't really come with a hidef drive builtin and was never positioned as primarily a dvd player.
- fantasticFlan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Seems they already realized it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Remnant
- ericrous, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1DVD had already been around for 2-3 years when the PS2 came out. Blu-ray had only been out for a few months when the PS3 came out.
- CiDaemon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Sword Pie.

- SSCrow, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Meh, Final Fantasy games without Nobou Uematsu just don't feel right.
- RxDaniel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1They already know how to release on multiple systems. The thing I'm waiting for is for them to learn how to make a new game and not remake FF 1-6 every year. Don't get me wrong those remakes are the first FF games I have bought since...well since FF6 but its done stop remaking them.
- onlynameicanget, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"most 360 users don't care about JRPGs."
This one does. - Diggtatorship, on 10/10/2007, -5/+6I wonder how long it will be before Square-Enix realizes that it IS possible to release on multiple platforms. What do they get out of exclusivity? If they think Sony needs to step it up a bit, maybe it's time for them to stop relying so heavily on one source of revenue.
- geartype2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mistwalker
- themilk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1well i want all of those things
- mayan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Great. The PS3 can go ahead and keep Star Ocean 4. SO2 was the best, and SO3 was just a waste of time.
- vault, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Sony Home being another...two reasons I'm considering a PS3.
- LocalDocal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Ah, my apologies. I actually read it as individual games rather than entire franchise. Still, interesting list, however. Mainly because of this: http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=12349
- ncnavguy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Yeah, Japanese business dynamics are so different from American practices, people really don't know what is going on behind the scenes, just because there isn't an official exclusivity deal on the table doesn't mean the two companies aren't bound by less visible ties of loyalty and honor. Though I must admit this is the first time I've really heard Square speak out against Sony since the FF relationship began.
- phookyall, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0You'll have to kill 100 lesbian cows first before it can be ported to the lovable X360
