This is the kind of games I definitely purchase to support the developer.
I really want to encourage thinking outside the box. - TheBurt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8http://spore.ea.com/

That's probably the worst website I have ever seen in my life. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spore_(game)

Will Wright is a hero. Just because he's not really interesting in making Yet Another FPS 2, doesn't mean that there's no interesting gameplay in his concepts. I for one, welcome this break from the norm in what has become a rather stagnant industry. It's interesting to see that mould breaking innovation seems to more or less solely come from the places it started with gaming forefathers like Will Wright and Peter Moleneux being the large among the very few who're willing to try something a little different. - PlJack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Will Wright

- heartless_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For those wondering about graphics card and CPU power needed to play this... its going to be a hell of a lot less than you think. This is all procedural content. This is not stuff that artists have gone in and spent hours building. Your PC is making the graphics right in front of you.
If you download the full presentation you will understand more. Even if this game bombed in gameplay aspects the idea of prodcedural content is ground breaking. We're talking about fitting a game like Doom 3 onto a floppy disk... and that is not an exageration. Will says it in the full version... something like 5,000 to 1 compression ratios... that is insane. - Invid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This just looks unbelieveable. I can't wait for this game. Only just found out about this a week ago! How has this game managed to stay under the radar for so long?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is like, everything SimLife should have been.
- kevbear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I dub this Gaming 2.0
- monsieurgrand02, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The fact that you start out at a cellular level in the beginning is fascinating. And he destroys an entire planet near the end of the vid. Awesome!!
- smorik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1love these kind of games
- llamafier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can't even think of how to describe this...
- canucksin2006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Absolutely amazing! What else is there to say?
- beejay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"For those wondering about graphics card and CPU power needed to play this... its going to be a hell of a lot less than you think. This is all procedural content. That's a bit inaccurate, because the same hardware resources are used to display the same graphics, just in one case you're loading the textures, models, etc. from disk, and in the case of Spore you're generating textures, models, etc and displaying them in the exact same way. And if your PC is making all of those assets, that means your PC is doing even more work (as opposed to loading from disk). - ploink341, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now that's a game!!
- DMCau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A mirror of the full presentation:

- nanboya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gameplay, what gameplay. You play God, basically, which is the whole point. For those of you old enough to remember SimLife, that was part of the fascination with the game!
- DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"That looks retarded. Where is the gameplay? Designing your mutation = gameplay?"
Maxis likes to call their games "toys." There is no pre-defined gameplay, you make your own gameplay. And it tends to work really well, for the majority of us. - Logan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, the game looks awesome. Especially interesting is the online sharing of creatures and planets that have been created.
What I'm wondering is the amount of processor power this is going to need. It looks like a standard sized (64MB) graphics card would work well, but it must take an extreme processor to make all of those calculations for 10-20 AIs, right?
By the way, this video is really old, it's been available at the GDC website for ages. - MalaysianMafia, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Older than Jesus, LOL.
- AngryPenguin47, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is THE game i have been waiting for, a game that allows the user to essentially define their own gaming experience.
- commodore64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, Willy says "umm" a lot...and it always sounds the same, but this game looks amazing, too bad we gotta wait quite a while.
- geezusfreeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Old, but worth a Digg because everybody needs to see this.
- BrianSaysHi, on 02/16/2008, -0/+1Ah... that makes me smile:)
- thekiller111, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1DAm that all i can say
- zaofreek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd like to see a DS release of this...it reminds me of ElectroPlankton for some reason...
- EnricoFermi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks cool but google video sucks ass
- MightyGiant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow... this is the one of the first times I'm actually speechless. I'm afraid anything I say won't do the game justice. I think the only way I can describe this game right now is with a number: 9x10^(9x10^(9x10^99999999999999)).
- canyonblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't care how old this video is, how often it has been listed on digg...
OH MY GOD. DEAR LORD what an idea. Will Wright is a god, just a god of video games. - stickyboot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The FULL PRESENTATION is avalable free here: http://www.pqhp.com/cmp/gdctv/
- Fentekreel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1anyone else get the feeling that this is the civilization of E.V.O?
- RichPowers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Jugalator
I agree. For over 15 years, I've bought most Sims games (except THE Sims, they got kinda dumb) to support Maxis. They do good work and deserve the support. - Prophetik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Speaking of sharing content, we learned more about how people will get to interact with each other's stuff. Whenever you create something, assuming you're connected to the 'net, it'll be uploaded for the world to enjoy. But it doesn't just disappear. You'll be able to track how your creations are faring around the universe. You'll get regular 'Multiverse Reports' that tell you how many people met your species and how they reacted. Is everyone killing your creatures on sight? Are they using the different buildings you've created? You'll get to see! "

I don't have enough vacation days... I may have to take maternity leave for the release of this game. - MalDON, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm a huge fan of all this Sims games. Well, besides THE SIMS, kinda sucked. But this game should be amazing.
- goosedotnu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Careful your in-game beings don't become sentient. Would it still be ethical to uninstall the game?
- frickindeal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Will Wright is a genius. Simple as that.
This takes things to a whole new level. Raise your kids in Sims 2? This thing starts out on a microscopic scale and ends up with intergalactic travel.
Old, but dugg nonetheless. - Jaxor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is the coolest looking game I've ever seen! This is almost mind boggling! I wonder if there are even other galaxies to go explore...
If people are addicted to games like Second Life, this game will dwarf those and intensify addictiveness 10 fold. I am very excited.
+++Dig for sure. - bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Doh, what the heck happens after this video ends!? It cuts off after 35 minutes!
Anyways it'll be interesting to see when this game actually comes out, I have faith in somebody like Will Wright though. - gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I want this! Not to far out either, its expected by Quater 3 of 2006. "
Here's hoping for no delays. Or no concurrent release with the PS3. This had better be PC only (and Mac too at most); they shouldn't waste time exporting to small gamepads and HD-DDT/Blu-Rry. - lamech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been dying for more info on this game for ages - its looking awesome. ::mouth watering::
- robschraer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0reminds me of that old Evo game on snes. I'm getting this as soon as it comes out.
- shultzy055, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice, saw this demo last summer in person, really freakin sweet
- jonesin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WOW, this game looks amazing!!
- rodball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>> "can you make flying creatures?"
The video displayed flying vehicles. I don't see why it could not apply to the creatures.
>> "Christian gamers are gonna love this."
Joke, I know... but the whole concept is "intelligent design" with you as God - I take it that's what you meant?
This game looks fantastic. Unfortunately for me, I think the idea of playing will be far better than the actual experience of playing it. I have played Civilization, The SIms, Good and Evil (?), etc. When the games start hacking away portions of my real life, I have to question my sanity... and put the game down.
BTW, I have always enjoyed playing Populous I & II. I think I could enjoy them because I could save at the end of a level, and if I never came back, no biggie.
That's just me, of course, you guys enjoy your game. :)
>> "is it procedurally generated?"
This post was procedurally generated, following the script imposed by the preceding posts. - hanshasuro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL @ keybear. Seriously. This is the kind of creativity that modern gaming has been so very lacking.
- CanuckPlumber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dugg.
- turgiddahlia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Please god, let this be as good as it promises to be.
