- Darthpip, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5They actually install a rootkit on your PS3 so that you can play your games. It's there to make sure you don't mod it. If you do, Sony is alerted IMMEDIATLY and will send a lawyer to sue you promptly as possible. Trying to remove the rootkit is dangerous, and could possibly cause the software to malfunction, leaving you with an expensive paperweight. Not that anybody's surprised, though...
- uptown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Why bother region-coding content when the device-itself will just connect to Sony servers every time I power up the device and decide whether I can play my media or not?
Overtly intrusive DRM laden with rootkits?

A completely arrogant stance on what rights they have with customer's systems?

No thanks Sony. - teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yea maybe I would beleive it if the PSP wasnt so damn locked down. How do they explain that region encoding, all PSP screens are identical, every piece of hardware the same yet for some region its region locked and homebrew is always blocked from working, add this new rootkit bull**** to the mix and all I see is Sony drumming up just about the only good press they can muster because so far the PS3 is vaporware and they know it.
- gaius_baltar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sony= Dead to God
- JMJimmy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Agreed - after all the problems I had with "The Sony Station" - and the recent stance the company has taken on fair use I will no longer be buying their products or services.
- TimmyK., on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is cool, but I think the reason they are doing it is because region limiting a video game system has become pointless. Europe will still be limited because of the standard differences (PAL vs. NTSC and such) and the big language barrier will still be there with Japanese games. Most people don't care about importing games anyway, and those that do have never once been stopped from doing so thanks to mod chips and other work arounds. This also tells me that they are moving that much closer to worldwide near simultanious releases on most games(which is already pretty common anyway) and fewer region exclusive games. If this is all true, then the benefits of region coding systems becomes almost non-existant, and it isn't worth the problems, and hassle. Plus now they can simplify the manufacturing process a lot as well.
- BloodyRids, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OK so if SONY's different divisions are their own separated entities then where can I buy Sony/BMG stock. All the divisions lie under the SONY umbrella. What makes you think that SONY/BMG policies are any different from SCE policies. It's the same company morons.
- CapAmerica, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sounds to good to be true. But I hope it is, Infact I would like to see all systems go region free.
- aetherane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well the system settings could have an option for language, and then the game could detect it and work appropriately, so this could work very well.
- thefurryone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is big news for the importing crowd. My question then is will older region-coded games be playable on any random PS3?
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Well, wouldn't that be nice? Maybe they're catching on that it might be easier to HELP their customers than hinder them with unnecessary "protection." Their music division could definitely take a hint from this.r
- Dayyve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To all the dorks that want to play PS2 games and don't realize that there is always an agenda to their plans you need to quit carjackin' pimps and exercise your brains. Who the hell posts on a site like Digg where you obviously need a computer and then plays crappy looking (fine, God of War was great, I'll give you guys that) games when there are so many four star PC games out there. Try telling me SOCOM pwns BF2 and I won't disagree with you only because I'll be laughing too hard.
- bighorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If anyone thinks Sony is becoming more pliable with their pitch of Global game support, call their Corporate Office and ask them for help with foreign language games etc...they will tell you "we don't offer game support" Even though Sony has sites in other regions, there is no crosstalk between them... and probably never will be. What's even more ludicrous is the response from the companies that make the games for the other regions. Global support; more like Global abuse...so much for NFTA
- Hollister, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes the rootkit news is getting old and we are tired of hearing about it, but it isnt just the rootkit, its the whole principle about the way the company is acting and what they are doing to the consumer, that is what makes it newsworthy
- zwilliams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah Rootkits are old, over, and finished? Have you paid attention to the news lately? Its still going on.
Anyways, its interesting that Sony might remove the regional coding. My question is to the adverse affects on their business model. - tank_47, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Don't start the rumours there... Don't you remember all the fuss around PSP games and PSP movies. "They are region-coded, oh no they're not, oh yes they are..." just let it be for now, the system's not even close of being done.
- cds879, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This actually makes more sense for Sony, MS, and Nintendo to do. People will no longer be able to say they are using a mod-chip legally to just import games. Without region locks, there is no actual(legal) reason to have a modchip.
- V01D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sounds pretty good...
no more Japan Exclusive releases :) - angelwspr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yay! region code free DRM! rootkits 4 all !!! yay!!!
- rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Don't buy Sony. Don't feed the Beast.
- CaptainFuture, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0a step in the right direction. No if they'd only get their act together and release the PS3 worldwise like Microsoft is able to do with the X360.... WTF is up with having to wait 1 whole year before being able to buy it in Europe after the Japanese launch.
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0At least with the Dreamcast we had these little boot CDs we could use to bypass the annoying and strangely ineffective region codes ;)
- cbotwell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0socom pwns all
- Crono, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I really hope this is true. Ive always maintained that having region's is stupid. This is definatly good news. Now they just need to start making DVDS all region free.
- VladDrac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sony has an ulterior motive for this. The highest court in Australia has determined that modifying the play station is legal BECAUSE consumers should have the right to play games they bought elsewhere. By eliminating region restrictions, Sony is undermining the legal basis for legal modding. Expect modding the play station to be illegal again in Australia in a few years.
- RWVolkl158, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This sounds like a way for Sony to say look, people aren't using Mod chips/boot disks to play region encoded games, and we all know about how "legal backups" go... so how about we try and make them have no real legitimate use.
(Not to say that some people don't honestly make backups because their kids, dogs, whatever will tear their stuff up) - Incognito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0***** SONY
- FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I believe this as much as the PS2 is able to render Toy Story graphics in real time with the Emotion Engine.
- craterburnsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This would be amazingly cool, I can't tell you how many PS2 games there are that i'd be glad to import if i didn't have to pay more for a mod chip or anything like that.
- swaxhog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The lastest rumor running around is that the PS3 will only allow a game to run on one machine. No more renting, trading or selling used games.
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=27568 - hardkoretom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+01st of all to all the people crying about the rootkits, its called get a mac and u wont have to worry about it. 2nd, sony said they werent going to region code the stupid psp games but last i heard they were. dont believe a word that sony says.
- icespide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0that is a good question
- Dragular, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Uhh, you guys do realize that SCEA and Sony Music are run as completely different companies... correct?
Anyway, I doubt this happens, look at the Neo Geo Pocket for my reasoning. - gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1They actually install a rootkit on your PS3 so that you can play your games.
