- gunner2398, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37This is incorrect.
It took Sony two years to turn a profit on the PS2.
Please do a little research first before you throw out numbers. - NiceGuyVan, on 10/12/2007, -10/+44Sony lost more than that when PS2 came out, made it back in less than 6 months.
- szelij, on 10/12/2007, -4/+30"Learn from Microsoft?" Goddamn it, Sony PIONEERED the art of losing money on first launch and recouping it later. Look at it's PS and PS2, it lost tons of money at launch and recouped it soon enough. It's a valid business tactic. $900 million is small compared to the money Sony will make when the PS3 is successful.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27Does the blu-ray drive make the games better or the machine faster or something? It seems more like a marketing gimmick right now... Games fit just fine on DVDs right now.
- DDRSkata, on 10/12/2007, -10/+31"The 360 has had the advantage of being the first next-gen console."
So did the Dreamcast. - tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23"Microsoft and the 360 are no longer relevant to the next gen console battle."
Words from a true fanboy. Seriously, if you think that, you are wrong. The 360 has had the advantage of being the first next-gen console. If anything people should be worried about the PS3, that includes the price, games, blu-ray, release date, etc... If the PS3 is overpriced (> $399, which is the Xbox's Premium Console), then they're in trouble as consumers might choose the 360 or the Revolution. If it keeps getting delayed, people will get more and more disappointed. The 360 has great games out right now, and it has the Live experience to go along with it. I can see Revolution easily being the winner of the next-gen console, since it's innovative, and it's rumored price point.
However, 2 out of the 3 next-gen consoles haven't been released, so you can't say anything about the next-gen console race. The 360 is strongly still in it, in fact, its in the lead as of now, since it's the only next-gen console out right now. - XTrek, on 10/12/2007, -12/+29Unfortunately for Sony they are launching into the teeth of the 360. There will probably be a 360 price cut and some new hot games coming right about when the DelayStation3 launches.
Don't think Sony will recoup their losses very fast this time around. - fgsfds, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17"Yup, not to mention every console since the NES. cept for MS whos lost money the entire time."
I don't think Nintendo has EVER lost money on a console, actually. IIRC, they've never sold their hardware at a loss. - Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -8/+24wow, if the ps3 doesn't sell well, sony is *****.
- dude3609, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18"And to think that many of us thought Sony would actually learn from the mistakes of Microsoft"
Innacurate. Sony wants to keep the price as low as possible on its launch, regardless of how much it will cost them. The price to produce each machine will drop over time as hardware gets cheaper. In the long run they will gain a profit, and support from gamers. - AwRy108, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Considering they've sold over 100 million PS2's in six years (5-6 million just in '06), I don't think they'll have much trouble re-cooping from their "losses". Besides, if they get their Blue Ray in millions of households, they'll be riding the profit boat all the way into the sunset...
- davidv, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13For a more precise number
100,000,000,000.00 Yen = About* 875,836,884.944
And if nothing else this really enforces Sony's stand that to make money you gota be willing to loose a little first. - SuperBeast, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16"The 360 has great games out right now'
That's your opinion. They don't really have anything that I like that isn't on the PC. Console sales come down to personal prefrence. The PS3 and the "Wii" will have more games that I like than the 360 so I will probably get them. - SimonX314, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Bluray drives have slower loading times than DVD drives.
http://www.gamespot.com/pages/profile/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=23916169&user=skektek - STKD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Sony + losing money? Now I actually want a PS3. Several in fact.
- datagod, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15I want them to lose money because of their evil DRM practices. I will not purchase any Sony products.
The ironic thing is that to do the most damage I should buy a PS3.
I won't though....that would inflate their numbers... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7you could always not buy it.
- CatfishJones, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I'm buying used only. No numbers or profit (loss) for Sony. That includes consoles, games, music...
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Wow, for some reason you guys think that the 360 is doing horrible and will do horrible. I don't understand why, it's a great console. The PS3 isn't even out yet, and you guys are speculating about it already, talking like you have been to the future and back.
"The PS3 and the "Wii" will have more games that I like than the 360 so I will probably get them."
Are you serious? The consoles haven't even launched and you are already saying they will have better games? What's your proof? Have you also been to the future and back? - ChuckTaylor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9nintendo is looking so good right now. I dont know the exact figures, but they arent taking a fraction of the hit sony and MS will with their next system, and they're generating just as much buzz as sony is. They're gonna see huge profits.
- jmnormand, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9dvd drives are maxed out at 21mb/sec, blu-ray at release is reported to handled 72mb/sec. I dont know if the ps3 will be quite this high but the min spec is 36mb/sec. this means faster load speeds and the ability to access more data during game play. so its not just larger capacity that is a draw.
- uptown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Sony's Red Ink Widens With $578M 1Q Loss
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12507071/ - thund3rstruck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Ok, you guys are living in a fantasy world because I finally got a 360 this past weekend and that was only because I was able to get into Sams Club through a friend of mine. I have been vigorously trying to get my hands on one for months but they're sold out everywhere (at least in VA). If that's a failure then I'd like to have such a failing product.
- mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yeah Sony BMG are Sony computer entertainment are different.
Sony PSP ads are weird. They also did a crappy job with their MMOs. Oh what else did I miss? Sony UMDs ? Memory sticks? - myh89, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8@ datagod
just so you know Sony bmg and Sony computer entertainment are two different branches of Sony. And have nothing to do with each other. So don't blame SCE for BMG's stupidy - piratearggghhh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If Sony wants to play the who can bleed more money game to recoup later with Microsoft, they're going to lose. They're in a desperate situation as a company and have everything riding on the success of the PS3 and blu ray. Bad business strategy if you ask me.
- beforeIforget, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I think that's what many people don't understand. When you remove the fanboyisms and bias, both Microsoft and Sony are trying to run a business and control a market. Last I heard, MS has somewhere around $50B in the bank, which is a ludicrous amount. They can drop the cost on the X360 to $200 a pop just to spite Sony (or Nintendo). Sony doesn't have money anywhere near close to this and has been restructuring over the past couple years. The PS3/blue-ray is a huge gamble for them and needs to be a success. All the eggs are going into one basket. We'll see how it turns out.
- Omicron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@dude3609:
agreed. what is there to learn? there's really only 3 options for sony, DESPITE what happens/happened to MS
1. sell the console at a price no one will buy it
2. lose about a billion in the first year of the PS3 and hope to make it back on game sales and lowering hardware costs
3. stop making game consoles. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"It's just more storage space. In less than 5 years, we'll start to see a need for that extra 20 gigs of storage "
nope. -- "Xbox Games Grew 77% Over System Life-Cycle, Suggests 360 DVDs Are (Mostly) Big Enough for Next-Generation" http://gamesfirst.com/?id=1132
also, a 12x dvd drive (xbox 360) and a 2x blu ray drive (ps3) read at about equivilent speeds. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Well they certainly aren't getting my $300, oh sorry $500, oh wait what's the price now? Whatever it is, they aren't getting my cash. Nintendo so far's the only one that has appeal for me.
- ByteGuerilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I believe the phrase goes "you have to speculate to accumulate", not "you have to piss all your cash away in order to scrape it back together again".
- hcl40u, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Don't forget Sony Online(SOE). Expect their crappiness to seep in to Playstation Online.
- therippa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6All that matters to me is the $400 Blu-Ray player.
- DoctorNo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Should be noted that Sony may be taking control of Sony-BMG, (aka Rootkit), contrary to erroneous report Sony at this point does not control the Sony-BMG company it is controlled by German media company Bertelsmann, after the Rootkit fiasco, Sony may be reconsidering its position.

I didn't say "better" games. I said the games I "like" will be on the PS3. Metal Gear Solid 4. God of War, Final Fantasy(not online), and Games like Red Steel for nintendo look pretty cool. - DanAtkinson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Yup! Also known as the 'disposable razor business model'. You sell the product cheaply (generally at a loss) and you make money on the parts (games in this case) and accessories.
It's nothing new, and losing $1bn isn't a huge deal to a company of Sony's size anyway. - ByteGuerilla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4What's interesting is, if a Blu-Ray player costs $999, how much is a PS3 going to cost!?
- filovirus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5RAAAAMONE, Ben's hog is so big, Sony plans to hide behind it when the ***** hits the fan.
- Tiak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4And don't forget Linux PC, possibly media center, and maybe after that in priorities that gaming console thing.
- Philoushka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow. Your nomenclature exposed your bias and the non-objectivity in your statements.
- addicted44, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is such a myth!! The Japanese tend to buy more Japanese products, because Japanese companies make products that cater to their taste!
If what you say is indeed true, then how is apple selling more ipods than Sony is selling Mp3 players in Japan? Or is apple now a japanese comany?
The japanese have very distinct tastes and likes and dislikes, and MS realized that, but still did not do anything about it, in their hurry to pull of a worldwide launch as soon as they could. There were hardly any games that would appeal to the Japanese, and after the terrible reputation the Xbox enjoyed in that country, this was just another nail in the 360 coffin as far as Japan was concerned. - Tiak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well, they could've just said "Well over 3 quarters of a billion dollars"... And then everybody would THINK almost a billion....
- JangoFett, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4You should buy as many PS3s as you can and eBay them.
1. Sony loses money on each console.
2. You make 200%+ profit. - kualla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@illumenum
"Um, yes. Higher density discs means more data is read from them per revolution. Faster loading from disc equals faster, better games."
12x DVD speeds are very similar to 2x blu-ray... So does it make a real difference, no! YOU #$#$ #@$#@$, jk, but do some research.
Two big advantages for the 360 are the fact that the game loader consumes MUCH less CPU than the PS3 is assumed to be(which go figure, MS has been developing OS's for how many years now) and also the development software is supposedly much easier to use for the 360 than the PS3... we truly won't know until PS3 has been finalized and released though. - fohat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So you think SONY shouldn't be held accountable for products with their name on them? I don't care who made the decision to rootkit those CD's, SONY knew about it and did not stop it.
- dimatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I doubt that they really care if they lose double that. They are bound to make it back if their fans keep having to buy new PS3's when they keep breaking :D
- dioscaido, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ouch. On the flip side, MS's recently posted 13% revenue growth for the quarter. http://www.microsoft.com/msft/earnings/FY06/earn_rel_q3_06.mspx
- DCstewieG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Games right now aren't in "true HD," as Sony calls it. Blu-ray will allow for games to run in HD, nothing else."
"Um, yes. Higher density discs means more data is read from them per revolution. Faster loading from disc equals faster, better games."
Oh my God, please tell me you both are joking... Faster loading = better games? Even ignoring that, the Blu-ray drive will spin slower so the density is negated. As far as "true HD"...wow, just wow. - skunkman62, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3more like CD + Sony = RootKit or how about PS3 + March = Vaporware. Supporting Sony is for fags.
- Tiak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is a mistake how?... They were going to lose money on the PS3 at launch either way, at least this way they net money from blu ray disk sales.... Not to mention extra momentum to ge gained later in the generation when people actually own 1080p TVs and Sony is using its blu ray drive to utilize them.
