- Hercules, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11It's not about the $900 price, or $500, or even $200. It's about development costs for the production companies making the games.
John Carmack himself has said he is going to develop for the XBox 360 because the development tools are more friendly than anything on the market, and it makes it a pleasure to create games. Sony is ***** in this regard.. they are introducing new memory management techniques, new architecture, processor, etc. And then they think every production company is just going to swallow the cost of learning and then developing for their platform.
Why would they? This is the same idiocy that made them think the rootkit was OKAY, that the walkman should CONVERT ALL YOUR MUSIC, and more.
Sony has their head up their collective asses and I won't be buying anything from Sony in the near future. I am not supporting their coporate stupidity nor their eagerness to be the end-all-be-all of any part of a market. - Ian_Dass, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8the good news is that they are bundling the rootkit and added drm free of charge.
- wjglenn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3>for the XBox 360 because the development tools are more friendly
>than anything on the market, and it makes it a pleasure to create games.
Why not? It's not ubiquity that made DOS and Windows such a monster success. Microsoft has always lavished developers with tools and resources. Why do anything different with the Xbox - especially when Sony makes it so damn hard and expensive for developers? - BinaryJay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Make everyone expect that it's going to cost a fortune, or better yet make them think that it is WORTH a fortune and then release it for half of what it supposedly costs to produce and people will buy them in droves thinking that they're getting such a good deal that it would be silly NOT to buy it.
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I suspect this estimate is pretty accurate. The VP of Sony said that he "wants you to earn it" when you buy a PS3, meaning, "it's gonna be very expensive."
Sony is doing many many thing wrong with this launch.
1. They are delaying too long.
2. Too expensive
3. People don't want BluRay, it won't sell systems
4. They're letting the rumor mill run rampant, hurting their credibility
5. SonyBMGs DRM debacle has angered many consumers (not the fault of the game division, but bad news none the less)
6. They're launching after they botched the PSP launch (being outsold by DS 2:1 worldwide with sales rapidly declining)
I don't think anyone believes the PS3 will be a success on par with the PS1 and PS2 except Sony executives whose jobs depend on it being so. It's gonna be sad seeing them in unemployment lines in 3 years. - jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No dongiaconia, maybe in the +/- 1% range, but even that is suspect. Stocks move for a reason, there are no real 'random fluctuations'.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2keep in mind, DS $129 PSP $249
it's no lynx, that's just dumb to say that at this point - Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3$699 would still be ridiculous...
- dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Isn't anything less than 5% just market fluctuation?
- FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I disagree on the necessity of including blu-ray with the PS3. If they include blu-ray and the PS3 costs $400-500, they will completely gut non-PS3 blu-ray sales. Such a low price will wipe out any profits Sony CE and othe manufacturers will make on the introduction of the format.
It's a double whammy because not only will Sony be losing money on each PS3 with blu-ray, they will also lose the sale of a standalone blu-ray player. Plus they will be losing the support of other manufacturers to produce blu-ray equipment, because they will be unable to sell their devices at a profit. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think they should wait a couple more years, its not like PS2 is bad. Is it? PS2 still does the job fine to me. It just seems like they want to release a console only because Microsoft released the new xbox 360. If they gave it a few more years, PS3 would be better, cheaper to manufacture, and catch the xbox 360 in mid life, therefore not having to compete as much.
- jeolmeun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2How much were those neogeo consoles?
- mr_cheese28, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sony needs to show a working PS3 out in public & then confirm the price range now before anymore damage is done.
- agimat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Name ONE killer app for the PSP? Without one the PSP will fail..."
i'd have bought a DS but couldn't get past how fugly it is compared to the PSP - lame_duck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Give me the new Nintendo system and leave me the heck alone. I just want some good gameing, not pritty pictures. I'm sick of how RPG's are made now, there the teeny-pop of the videogame world. Give me some oldschool hardrock type RPG's. The mothers that took you about 80 hours to play because you wanted to find everything in it, not because the animated moves took a total of 70 hours to watch. *for the math inclined, if the movies took 70 hours, than there would be 10 hours of actual game play. Fun, yes?*
- supersteve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Sony would be dumb to release the PS3 for $900. No one would buy it. It should be the same price as whent the PS2 lanched $449 CAN. But anything over $500 CAN will just be to much money.
oh well guess we will have to wait and see. - sidebuster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think automagically has something there. Catching the xbox360 in its mid life would be a good idea if the PS3 could be as cheap as $250 or so and looks as good if not better than the 360, then again it might throw off some sort of balance gamers have and may be able to eather buy both or give up on the ps3 all together and not care about it when it is released.
- j0keR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nobody would buy a $900 PS3. There's no way. Therefore, it won't be $900. What a stupid rumor, all the rumors keep getting more childish. I heard the same kinds of rumors about the Xbox years ago. (Will be a PC -> will cost the same price as a PC).
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Instead of arguing about what demographics PS3 is targeting for (which is the Teens-Adult), people are talking about price! Yes, it's way, way overprice compared to the 360 (if this is the real price), but you have to remember that crazy hardcore gamers will buy them. Whatever, regarding the Revolution, it's sounding good so far: cheap, good games. The 360 will probably drop in price when the Revolution comes out and maybe when the PS3 comes out. IMO, if you want that good "powerful" gaming machine, go for the 360. If you want a more cheaper solution, go for the fun packed Revolution. I can't really recommend the PS3 to anyone as it is overpriced, and very delayed.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"Sony IS for kids and teens - GTA, Final Fantasy and Metal Gear are some of the biggest franchises on the Sony machines, and teens love violence and comic book characters :P"
Wow, that explains it, not. - I8PP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't think the NeoGeo failed because of the price of the machine itself, but the price of the games - if it did fail that is, I don't think it was aimed at the same demographic as Sega and Nintendo
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1God this is going to be hilarious when the PS3 is announced at 349.99...
Thank you all you dimwitted xbox fanboys! Sorry there's no check in the mail from Sony's marketing folks for the nice work you've been doing.
Time for you clowns to go back to trying to convince people the '360 is sold out everywhere' - good luck with that BS... - rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1As a Sony stockholder I think our company needs to cut its losses and deep six the PS3. With the money that could be saved Sony could simply buy Nintendo and maybe realize a profit. I don't think any Sony subsidiary can show due diligence by continuing a product that will not maximize my profits without facing a stockholders lawsuit.
- matt.rubin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Killer apps for the PSP
like Madden is good except for loading times but u get used to it Ridgeracre is cool THPS underground 2 is awesome - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm sorry -- you finance noobs -- but the way Japanese stocks have been moving lately, 3 and a bit percent is a hardly "sinking". Who cares?
- matt.rubin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow SONY GIVE US A BREAK U ARE SUPPOSED TO BE MAKING THE MONEY ON THE GAMES NOT THE CONSOLE
- ByteGuerilla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Everybody wears pants! We're Sony! ***** PANTS!"
- mtrend, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"So you work a 9-5? Too bad for you... there are much better ways to make money, like own a business"
So you prefer working from 6am to 9pm? ;-) - BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Revolution doesn't have the software to compete.
We have see nintendo consoles do nothing since the N64."
WHat the %*$* are you talking about? ROTFLMAO.
Nintendo has more TOP quality exclusives than ANYBODY else. Mario, Zelda, Metroid. Ever heard of those?
Nintendo is going to make STRONG gains against the market share they lost to Sony 10 years ago. But ultimately xbox 360 is going to win this round. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that'll show the bastards
- funkytaco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Holy.
- atf487, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if sony knows how much it'll be, they should just say it already.
all the 'hype' is now against them; unless they do a miraculous E3 presentation like they did last year, except this time with actual game footage, then they have a chance.
oh, and making the price actually affordable would be nice too. i don't want blu-ray, either. i just got used to ***** dvds. - craterburnsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now is the Time to buy some Sony Stock then, because late this year it will skyrocket with PS3 success, and blu-ray ect.
- letmereplynow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Personally I think it is bad timing for Sony. Giving Microsoft a year or even a 2 year jumpstart means a huge gamble in losing marketship. Sony doesn't nearly the amount to play with the market and for that matter Microsoft. I see them losing as much as 60% in the market now...considering that it will cost nearly $600 plus to buy.
- harreola, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"...they do make up the money in software/accessory sales."
Finally someone who knows! These people fail to recognize that what they lose from the cost of manufacturing the console, they'll make up from the game sales.
This discussion has turned from the PlayStation 3 costing $900 to MAKE to a petty duel between fan-boys from each company. All this media is just "FUD." A good friend defined FUD for me, "Fear, Uncertainty, and Denial." These are just stories that try to scare you into not buying a competitor's product, make you uncertain whether you want to buy it or not, and joggle your mind making you think that it's either true or untrue. I have not heard from Ken Kutaragi or Kaz Hirai's official statements of how much or when it's coming out, so nothing is set in stone...get that into your heads!
And to make this comment further relevant: Yes it is unfortunate that these speculations about the PS3 have in some way affected the stock market. Trust me, I experienced it first-hand. - matariel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Hate to break this to you, but this has been standard practice for AT LEAST several generations of consoles."
That's not true. Only a few systems have ever been sold at a loss and expected to make it up through game sales. It's most definitely NOT the standard practice, and hasn't proved successful in the past. - NoMercy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well everyone keeps talking about no company could take those losses but you have to remember that the system doesn't cost 900 to make...remember the Intel processors only costing 40 to make then they sell it for over 200...same thing here because Sony buys in such mass that each piece of hardware is cheap
- Hieros, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe they are like MS and are willing to take a loss. Now MSs loss was only $100 per console. I think we can all agree on this: if the price IS $900 that will severely cut down on the consumer base.
- blind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is there a site out there that shows the release price for all the gaming systems every made?
3DO was the most at the time of release if i recall rite.
- GTAcrimelord, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's hard to believe so many people are willing to believe in this BS. Do you honestly think Sony would even bother releasing the PS3 if the price to consumers was anything even remotely close to $900? Sure they've made and are making some really stupid mistakes, but no company would be stupid enough to dig their own grave and then proceed to jump dive in head first.
It literally amazes me how stupid people on the internet (and in general for that matter) can be. - nattybohman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Making money only off the games is a retarded approach and will only get MS and Sony in trouble as consoles get more expensive."
Hate to break this to you, but this has been standard practice for AT LEAST several generations of consoles. The method has a proven track record of success, as they do make up the money in software/accessory sales. The 360 has the highest attach rate of any launch in the history of game consoles with close to 4 games sold per unit. Not too shabby. - manoftheisland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0time to buy a PS2
- vatchea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1this whole thing is insane, there are just too many rumors flying around about it, I say just wait and see, instead of flaming each other.
When the dust settles, I'm thinking Nintendo is gonna walk away the winner, they're just standing back and letting the PS3 and Xbox360 devour each other. - I8PP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"$699 for a gaming system is too much, even for the hardcore gamer."
I agree with you that it's too much, but I reckon hardcore gamers will go for it - people actually bought 2 $500 graphics cards just to be able to play the 3 or 4 high-end games before anyone else.
"SONY is not kids and teens. Think adult 18-35"
Sony IS for kids and teens - GTA, Final Fantasy and Metal Gear are some of the biggest franchises on the Sony machines, and teens love violence and comic book characters :P - jayf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Solid business plan I think.
Bundle a bunch of appliances like DVD players that everybody already owns 2 of and blow up the price to something consumers can't possibly justify paying for and then tell them that owning any other console is just plain dumb.
If they sell it at a big loss, they'll go bankrupt. If they sell it at a small loss people will refuse to buy it. I know I won't be getting it. I already feel like an idiot for buying my DustStation back in the day. - F1R3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Even if it costs half of that it had better deliver a lot. expecially after launch, and after they have done the enevitable "we're out of systems for now" crap and people have their hands on them... I can remember when gaming systems were about playing games and you watched movies and all that crap on other devices that you wanted and had use for... Expecially with the $60 games..... give me a cheap system with good games and i'll buy it... not an expensive entertainment device with some cautious eye candy.
- krazedkaoz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If it's 500 I'll get one. 900 hell no.
- vbrtrmn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0XBox 360 & PS3 == Neo Geo Part Deux
Paraphrased from the wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neo_Geo
The console was planned to debut at $599 USD and included two joystick controllers and a game (either Baseball Stars or NAM-1975). However, this plan was quickly scrapped and when the system had its national launch it debuted at $649.99 with two joysticks, a memory card, and a single pack-in game, Magician Lord, this package was known as the "Gold System". The system was also released in a "Silver System" package, which included one joystick controller and did not include a game or memory card. Other games cost $200 and up—each. - boss14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that a bunch of BS $500 max
