- shinythingy, on 10/10/2007, -10/+94Buried. The guy that originally reported this has removed all references of rootkit from his original posting as it is under investigation. So as far as we know it is false or just some sort of mix up.
http://www.gamingbob.com/2007/08/23/bioshock-installs-rootkit-including-demo/ - Newfie41, on 10/10/2007, -6/+71Holy christ, it's not a ***** rootkit! If you digg this story then you obviously do not understand what a rootkit is.
FTA: "Update 2: 2K has a statement up about BioShock's DRM. According to them, SecuROM isn't an actual rootkit, it's just hiding some registry keys on your system. Gaming Bob, who originated this story, has also retracted his analysis of the DRM as being a rootkit, and posted up some easier instructions for removing the SecuROM service, so it looks like it's indeed safe to come out and play." - NeoTechni, on 10/10/2007, -23/+55Buried inaccurate: Not Sony, not a rootkit.
- aldenhg, on 10/10/2007, -9/+34It's not a rootkit, it's a hidden couple of hidden registry keys. Move along.
- JayD16, on 10/10/2007, -2/+26I still cannot believe people think that a game that will never come to the PS3, is pumped hard by Microsoft, and has gone through the (what I assume is) rigorous testing of the "Games for Windows" tag is somehow Sony's evil plan to take over the world.
- devjunkie, on 10/10/2007, -9/+23Ugh, I installed BioShock and it aborted 5 children, raped my mother, and erased all my Gamecube save files.
Terrible. Just terrible. - Phyltre, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16To me, the idea of a program hiding something on my machine is far too easily abused. Slippery slope arguments are usually dubious, but in this case a third party has NO business hiding something on my personal computer. No thanks, Bioshock.
- alittleroy101, on 10/10/2007, -9/+23Securom is a SONY product dumbass. Try reading at least a little about the topic before posting.
www.securom.com - mikemil828, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16The Digg Definition of Rootkit: anything we say it is.
- damndj, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13This thread is full of fail.
- charlescheese, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11Just goes to show the irrational nature of most people.
- zerokill, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11Yes please do read what a Rootkit is and read what GamingBob has to say about them in the comments. Securom is not a Rootkit.
- MrSidnet, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Priceless:
http://img452.imageshack.us/img452/7281/rootkitqy8.png - abaddono1, on 10/10/2007, -6/+12why doesn't anyone question anymore, this article is ***** wrong, plain wrong. buried as inacurate but it's getting dug by retards who don't know what the hell they are talking about.
- Mejogid, on 10/10/2007, -6/+12@wageslaven (reply screwed up)
Have you even read your own links? Securom is a product to stop duplication of CDs aswell as other forms of game piracy (ie. DRM), a rootkit is a product that hides things from the operating system. From their wikipedia article and website, I can see no evidence that it's a rootkit. If you have a legitimate problem with DRM, go nuts - but just because you have some sort of vendetta against Sony doesn't mean you need to start making up crap in every thread that's to do with them. Not to mention that it was 2K, not Sony, that decided to add this copy protection. - Vektuz, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10Buried. Not a rootkit. Still very gross spyware/phone-home cruft that runs in the background - which is horrible, but hey, its NOT a rootkit.
If you want to whine about it make another thread that says what it really is instead of crying rootkit. - brasso, on 10/10/2007, -7/+13Pardon me, but then what is a rootkit? As I understand it securom is hiding data from the operating system so that it cannot easily be reached by for example by regedit.exe. What would you call such a software?
- isewise, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6http://digg.com/pc_games/Corpnews_Bioshock_Isn_t_Installing_a_Rootkit_You_Idiots
http://www.corpnews.com/node/177 - 808kick, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5EVEN WITH CRUISE CONTROL, YOU STILL HAVE TO STEER
- DeepFreezed, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7guess we cannot blame people for pirating this game on PC. well done 2K. you are just one step away from becoming another EA
- techmonkey4u, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7RTFA
"the Sony-owned SecuROM" - streetr8cer13, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7inaccurate at engadget they stated that the guy was mistaken and it is not a rootkit it simply hides some registry values and uses sony's securom drm
- abaddono1, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8remember folks, don't question, don't read, just digg it based off of the title!
- geckofiend, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8That would make you ignorant then.
- NiGHTSChao, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Dont blame Sony for 2K's decision in picking ***** CD protection
- Junkyarddawg, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5It is, however, a driver-level and pretty intrusive DRM. Not as bad as Starforce, but retarded and intrusive in its own right nonetheless.
- djphatjive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6And why is sony involved with this game at all?
- PixelVision, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It's a liberal then
/Kidding! - Vektuz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Most folks who bought it, bought it within the first day. They were not pre-warned before buying it that this crap would be piggybacking on it.
- mlw4428, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8CAPS LOCK IS CRUISE CONTROL FOR COOL!
- ShogunWarPig, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Who cares anyway. If it is anything and Sony had something to do with it then in a way its twistedly brilliant. That aside, Sony just didn't become an all powerful entity that can magically put "drm" on a disc with magical wands of greed; someone related to Bioshock decided to go with securom and Im pretty sure they knew what was going to happen when they went with that option. If anyones to blame its 2k and the bioshock team.
- amfantasy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3my view of a rootkit is anything that patches the kernel
- kurtwinter, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Uhh - IT IS A ***** ROOTKIT. It hides itself and its keys, it has administrator access and it can interfere with normal operation of your computer. Fine. Be a moron, buy the new "it" game and see for yourself.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4ITS NOT A TUMOUR
- alittleroy101, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4You are %100 wrong. The Steam version for the PC has the Securom bundled with it. It is not a steam activated game, just steam distributed.
8 seconds on Google or any or the 300 other threads rehashing this same tired topic would have shown you this. - noumuon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2or you could just, you know, download it.
- noumuon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2i would even go a step further to say anything that patches the kernel and allows undetectable root access.
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Then why post a comment that's irrelevant to the current topic?
- LycoLoco, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3You do realize that this game is on Steam, right?
- frygar, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Much better to "miss out" on ***** than take it up the ass by 2K / Microsoft.
-there, fixed that for you. - noumuon, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4a pain in the ass. a root kit is software that allows undetectable root access to the system.
- frygar, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Who's choice was it to use SECUROM? 2K and possibly MS's. Place the blame squarely where it belongs and just admit that you have a baseless grudge against Sony.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Apparently not actually a rootkit. But it's still malware.
- frigginchris, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3buried as "oh my ***** god there's an article right above this that explains how it's not a rootkit"
- Junkyarddawg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You're wrong. DRM is a tumor.
- bigmac375, on 10/10/2007, -5/+6buried, inaccurate.
- PixelVision, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2It's "couldN'T care less". If you think about what you're saying you'll realise that "could care less" doesn't make sense. Saying you "couldn't care less" makes it the thing that you care least about. Something you could care less about is something that could be moderately, or even very important to you.
- fadetoone, on 10/10/2007, -2/+31. SecuRom isn't a "rootkit"
2. Sony didn't put it in Bioshock. Making the absurd claim that Sony is evil because BioShock contains SecuRom is like claiming the guy that invented the gun (because guns are used to kill people, and that's evil!) - zwaldowski, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Hey, calm down! You can have Ubuntu and Windows on your PS3.
- devate, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Good luck with that, as far as I know no one has cracked it yet. Then again it hasn't been out that long so....
