- threepio, on 10/12/2007, -6/+47It sounds like a fascinating concept. The idea of a virtual space really appeals to me. I love the concept of unlocking rewards (not content) based on gameplay performance and a "trophy room" is the perfect extension of that. I can picture walls adorned by the heads of Dragons slain in LAIR, Armor used in Killzone, Snake's bandana (eyepatch?) from MGS and the like - it just tickles my fancy.
I loved this concept in Animal Crossing and I think it will do well here. It's not an innovation by any means - and I hope Sony doesn't play that card. It's an evolution of what's available. It would be interesting to see what the response from Microsoft and Nintendo will be.
This is truly the best part of a three way race; not the bickering and the insults that fly around boards like this - but the evolution of games and services that are motivated by competition. You may want to see game console X dead in the water - but that's not good for anyone. - MoeB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22http://kotaku.com/gaming/clips/gdc07-clip-the-ps3s-home-242341.php
- TDR25, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18I just seen the trailer for Home, and I must admit that I've been somewhat bashing Sony for months now, but I really think this is a very interesting concept. Even though it seems like HD-version of the Mii concept, it looks very polished at it's early stage. I'm sure Microsoft will do something to counter this, but I really have to admit that this new home concept looks very fun, innovative, and futuristic. I'm still not interested in buying a PS3, but big props to Sony for this concept!
- Gustomucho, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17I am no Sony fan, far from it.. but I have to admit.. it looks pretty good.
Nice concept, I thought the Mii would have the same kind of interaction but I was a little sad when I saw the extreme limitation of the Wii online experience.
Congrats Sony. - Luigi239, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Now I can sit on my virtual couch, watching virtual tv, talking to this virtual thing that they call a girl.
Wow, this thing is great for fufilling fantacies. - danknerd, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17HD Video of PS HOME!!! WOW
http://www.gametrailers.com/player.php?id=17558&type=wmv&pl=game - johngardiner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15wow just read about it on engadget.... props to sony it looks sick
- freetyme, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I actually think this is a good idea, having a 3-D lobby with your own trophy 'room' great answer to achievements and the XBOX live lobby, its actually refreshing to see something actually cool looking coming from SONY, now will it take off it depends, they said the Playstation Network would be free but will this be loaded with advertisements?
I don't know if it will take off or blow up in there face but it looks like SONY is at least trying, now if they could just own up and admit that there's PS3's on shelves still, and that Immersion lawsuit is the reason for no rumble.
Anyway, I would have no problem with Nintendo totally ripping this off, except using Mii's and putting them in a WiiConnect lobby, in their Wii rooms or whatever. *hint*
Tomorrow Miyamoto speaks...will we hear anything as big as this? I bet yes... - nx01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13@sleep
You act as if reading the NY Times is like getting a release date from gamestop.com. The Times is one of the most well respected news organizations on the planet. I'm betting it'll happen. - Aleman360, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14So this is how they're going to fund the Playstation Network, I was wondering about that. This thing will be an advertising outlet.
- anonatron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12well, finally a reason to say something nice about sony. It sure has been a while but bravo sony, this looks like it can be very cool.
- Ahnteis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10and you'll be able to buy hundreds of items in micropayments. They mention clothing for your avatar in the video.
- daRoach, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15This isn't exactly basically everything the 360 has, this is taking the idea of community gaming and improving on it. This is what new ideas are all about, find out what works, and use it, find out what doesn't work and can it, or improve upon it. It seems like that's what today's culture is all about, taking bits and pieces from all over and creating something better. I'm not a sony fan, but this news sounds like a step in the direction of getting me to be one.
- Zoids, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I just hope that when this is released there are these two features: a "block" button, and a "mute" button.
- Bega, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9theysa comin!
I'm sorry, digg me down. Jar Jar just happened to get in my head at the moment for some reason. - LiquidChimera, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Sounds like a beta is coming in April
- mrn111, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Wow, I must admit this new Home concept is definitely interesting. I would like to see how it plays in the real world. From the clip, there looked to be maybe 100 avatars. But what happens when you get millions? It looks like a step in the right direction nonetheless.
- JigoroKano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Why would you let millions of people into your Home?
- freetyme, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I think it will fail IF they nickel and dime you for clothes, points, avatars yadda yadda. I mean on the surface downloadable content looks great but it seems like companies are trying to rip us off lately by giving you what you think is the complete package but really to get the "good" guns, avatars, furniture, maps etc.in games you have to pay MORE., that I don't like because then only the richest people seem to win...
- Charron, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I'm gonna agree with what you said, but I'll be the naysayer and mention a few of the negatives I see off the bat.
This thing looks expensive. Since it's "free", the money will either come from excessive ads, overpriced and dominant microtransaction property, or worst, both.
All of the socialization problems (whiny kids, griefers, racists, what have you) are going to exist here. I know this because they've existed in every single MMO or online social game ever made. Thing is, there's no "game" here to justify dealing with those people. Since it looks optional (vs. the Dashboard), I can see those problems resulting in either a dead or unbearable environment.
It just doesn't seem as integrated as the 360's Dashboard. Yea, it has more features, but that integration is pretty important the the 360 owners I know (I'm a Wii fangirl, myself.)
I'm not crazy enough to call this horrible, a rip-off, or anything like that. It's a conceptually solid evolution and I expect something strangely similar in the next XBox. But this isn't exactly why people buy a $600 console, as far as I can tell. - Madhatter73, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8"Over time, Home will grow into a virtual network of spaces"
Translated:
"We call it Home, but you can't have a house yet"
For the launch, you get to be homeless and living in the park.
After we get everything coded, you can pay us for clothes, an apartment, and maybe then people will actually care about talking to you.
If you choose not to pay, you will remain homeless and the more affluent Home users will have an emote that will allow them to urinate on you as you helplessly watch them pass. - frostydf2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Home is going to be what defines the Playstation as a social network for gaming.

- badken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wallah?
WALLAH???
 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Those were announced a long time ago as coming.
- Thater, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Does this mean Sony won't ever talk to the New York Times again?
- ripper365, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6After watching the video, I have to say that it looks pretty cool. Finally they've shown me something that could potentially land their console in my entertainment center. I wonder if they'll be able to offer all of that for free still.
- Zoids, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5If you just want to play video games, get a system that only does video games. You know, like the original Game Boy. All three next-gen consoles are multimedia, get used to it.
- psyonide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3When I first heard of Playstation Home I must admit I immediately thought it would be little more than a shameless rip-off of XBL and the Miis, but after seeing the promo video I have to say I am intrigued. I'm still turned off by the $600 price tag, though. I cannot imagine myself paying that much money for a gaming console without a compelling reason to. I didn't even want to pay $400 for an Xbox 360 until Gears of War became that compelling reason for me.
If Playstation Home takes off the way Sony hopes it will, I can see that becoming a significant justifier for shelling out $600 for one. Though, in and of itself, it won't be enough to make me want to buy one. Maybe Playstation Home plus Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy would be enough motivation to get me to buy a PS3. We shall see. - Normio, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Get a bowl. Mix in a bowl the following ingredients:
2 cups Second-life
2 cup Xbox Live
1 Cup Mii's
a teaspoon of orginality
Wallah! Playstation Home! - yournamehere, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4i thought that was pretty funny
- Bega, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2or you know, they could just put ads in loading screens, which a lot of other online games on pc seem to do nowadays.
- Salgat, on 10/12/2007, -9/+11How about, more games?
- MWeather, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2From the looks of it this includes more games, which you can launch from within Home and play with the people you met there.
- Zoids, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I would've thought that was obvious.
- MouseCircus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's an awesome concept. I never visualized an online, virtual world that fully integrates multiplayer and console functions into one application. But is it fun and will the appeal last?
I can't help but feel that it's all just hype. How many of you actually play Second Life, or other social MMOs where you have no real purpose?
Second Life is popular in some circles, but it doesn't offer much beyond socialization. Yes, Home does include the ability to play various multiplayer games online with friends, and downloadable content, but beyond that, it's not that much more interesting than Second Life.
Where's the novelty here? Why is everyone so hyped? Is it really just because they managed to create a virtual world much like Second Life that is centered around the PS3?
I can't help but think that within a few years, Home will be much like most other MMOs. Filled with moronic high school kids, guys posing as women and perverts. What is there to do beyond socializing, multiplayer arcade games, and customizing? If that's all it is, then I'm not very excited. Sony will continually update it, no doubt, but what will they add? I'm sure any new functions they add will center around the social aspects of it.
In short: I'm not convinced this is the "killer app" that everyone on Digg is making it seem. Don't get me wrong, it's nice to see Sony getting back on track, but I don't think Home is going to convince people to buy a PS3. Maybe the gaming community will turn around and embrace the PS3, but who beyond that is really that interested in this? People who already enjoy social MMOs like Second Life and Habbo Hotel?
I'm not trying to troll. I'd seriously like it if someone answered my questions, so don't bother replying if you simply plan to insult me; I'd prefer it if you dugg me down in that case. - birch25, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3maybe i'm just not into this sort of thing, but who actually goes up to random people and says "do you know where i can bowl?" in these worlds?
- Zoids, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's got to be regionalised and then chopped up by categories like subjects, ages, games etc. One room with 200+ people in it, with at least half of them under fifteen? *shudders*
- KnockoutNerd, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Its making me hate my Mii even more.
I still love my Wii - modestmouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@johngardiner
After checking out that video clip, I don't know how you could say it's not adding something new to the online environments of the next gen consoles. - ddobson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have to say that this, plus LittleBigPlanet, look very interesting. $600 worth of interesting today, maybe not; but it's a good addition to the PS3 selling proposition.
It reminds me of the ancient dial-in-based Sierra Network from the early 90's, where you could chat with other people AND play games with them, which was a very cool concept and seemed to appeal to a broad demographic. Kudos to Sony for taking a chance on this idea! - WickedDrag0oN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They stated that depending on the game content you buy, play, and beat you will be rewarded with tons of free content. However there are premium items that will be for sale. The kinda stuff that would make a Clan or Guild get together and make a neato guild outpost, maybe spend 5 bucks and get a bunch of neat customized uniforms for everybody. I dunno, it seems kinda cool to me. Iv always had fun with those social games like habbo hotel, and second life. If SL had better graphics I might have stayed a bit longer. I think Sony is gonna hit a home run with this one.
Dont forget tyme, this is to encourage you to buy more games to get more reward gear/stuff. - WickedDrag0oN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its about time Sony took some of that PS3 "Potential" and brought some of it into fruition. Don't stop Sony, this still isn't enough. For $600 bucks you owe us the world.
- spidl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If Sony delivers on this idea it could be really cool. Not cool enough to make me buy a PS3, but it is an interesting concept. I will still stick with my Xbox360. It will be interesting to see what Microsoft comes back with since they have the network capacity to combat. Nintendo is going to have problems if they do not get their on line act together.
- Normio, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I like the concept. Given Sony's past online history with SOE and the PS3 network, I don't have high hopes for it, but I might be wrong.
- Zephir62, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2You know Sony is doing something right when the only thing people can find to bash them about are assumptions stemming from a lack of info.
- Supertrout, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I was afraid to get the PlayStation Work addition....
- badken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Why is it that everyone in Playstation Home looks like a scrawny teenager?
- Normio, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2@aleman....I totally agree. How can people move into multiplayer games while some games handle online differently. I hope Sony does a good job with this...it could be a really solid addition to their console. There is still not much information on the details. This is Sony and they like to promise big and deliver lackluster things in a fair amount of cases. I will hold judgement till I see it in action.
- Lynn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3My point is that Sony should concentrate on making their system better for games. Still no unified friends list. No in game messages. No custom sound tracks. Thing that make the games we are playing better. Not Second Life.
