- thegreatsam, on 10/12/2007, -8/+83Awww...and to think I almost got through a whole week without having to hear about the PS3's pricing...
- Tipa, on 10/12/2007, -6/+46Hi, welcome to the same comments about PS3's prices we've heard everywhere since they announced it. Tomorrow's news: PS3 is too expensive. Don't miss it!
- TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28It's expensive, we get it, we get it. Will people stop posting stories about it already?
- fyngyrz, on 10/12/2007, -8/+29Frankly, for each of the consoles I own, I spent far more on games than I did on the console, or as compared to what the PS3 costs. So my concern is only what happens to all the money I spent on those older games. Compatibility is issue #1 to me, and that's what I'm going to base my decision on.
I had to set up my old XBox in its own nook, with its own tv and so on because MS did such a poor job of compatibility (emulation of only selected games, naturally not the ones I was interested in, either.) I value square footage in my house highly -- I had to buy it, I have to maintain it, and I pay taxes on it -- and I truly resent not being able to *replace* the old console but being forced to keep it, lose the game library I've accumulated, or not get to play the newer games.
When Sony did PS2 after Ps1, I tested my PS1 games, they all worked, and I sold the PS1 and plopped the PS2 down where the PS1 used to live, keeping the number of machines hooked to the AV system constant. Today I have 3; Gamecube, PS2, XBox360 and I can tell you that if the PS3 can slide in where the Ps2 was, I'm going to be one happy camper. :-) - ArchibaldTuttle, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22Cool another next gen article, with no actual news!
- Ndiggnation, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19@phpirate
I don't believe it's incorrect, it was widely trumpted when the PS2 hit 100 million units sold, in a time shorter than it took the PS1 to get there. The other figures sound correct to, I thought the Xbox and GC had 20+-30 million units sold. - dharm, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22"I don't detect any Sony fanboyism here at all..."
its a good switch for once in awhile... was getting too use to seeing wii and xbox360 fanboys
"Your forgot to mention that to view 1080p you need a HDTV that'll show it."
you also forgot to mention that xbox360 looks like lastgen graphics (some cases worse) without a hdtv - faulkner, on 10/12/2007, -22/+36can you play zelda TP on your pda? howabout conduct an orchestra or use it as a lightsaber? is it as pretty as an ipod?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Another article to say that the PS3 is expensive.
Old news, stop posting this crap we all know its pricey. - dharm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16i am still running 1st gen ps2, i leave it on running for weeks, i have no problems.
same thing goes for other consoles, they break down, and they get attributed into their total sales aswel.. - psychorhino, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Why doesn't this article adjust the prices for inflation? If released today, the original NES would probably cost more, maybe alot more, than $200; the same goes for all the other systems on the list. Unless he readjusts his numbers for inflation, his prediction that consoles priced over $400 tend to fail is worthless.
- supersteve, on 10/12/2007, -35/+44to much money for anyone sane to spend on a gaming system.
get the Wii it's 1/2 the price. - dharm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"With no HDMI in the "gimped" $500 PS3, good luck playing your Blu-Ray movies on any HDTV that will be sold next year. HD players are more than likely going to REQUIRE an HDMI output to facilitate MPAA regulations."
as it stands right now, sony is not following mpaa regulations. and you dont need hdmi for 1080i HD, component cables have supported it for quite awhile...
"Well obviously, if fanboys are dumb enough to pay the price they've set at the moment it stands to reason they'll pay anything."
ya, i remember watching and reading about the people who wen and spent 2x-3x price of retail price for xbox360. They will pay anything, and thats a fact.
As i see it, i bought ps2 for like 450$ cdn, the ps3 is 600$ cdn (highend version). i bought the ps2 like 5-6 years ago. Spending 150$-200$ more than the cost of a ps2 doesnt sound outrageous to me. PS2 was also my first dvd player, ps3 will just happen to be my first blu-ray player - astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Despite the embarrassing mistakes Sony has made in the last year, it seems there still no shortage of people willing to put their faith in the PS3 brand. Sony could charge $1000 for the thing and there would still be people willing to buy it, evidently.
Of course, there's no shortage of people who hate Sony, too. That's what happens when your company grows so large that its core business units fundamentally conflict with one another. - Etheo, on 10/12/2007, -10/+18This is what gives people the idea that PS3 bashing = Wii fanboism.
I can't believe people are still beating the dead horse... Seriously, just let it go. I don't like the PS3 either, but now I just stop caring. Bashing the PS3 doesn't automatically make the Wii or Xbox360 better. - dementedcrabs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Gamecube failed because it had no games or developer support and that stupid little disk thing. Blu-ray isn’t the same as the little disk if you are going to say that... BD has more support from movie studio's then HD-DVD. And most importantly, it has support from the porn industry. Neo-Geo failed because of price and lack of games. Plus this was years ago when money was worth more then it is today. I don't think Sony will be short on games and developer support...
- acurism, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9My PS2 first gen still runs fine, no problems.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Shhhhh...let the Dreamcast and Xbox fanboys do their thing.
It will be funnier come Novemember... - CaffiendCA, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I'm on a 1st gen PS2 that I've never turned off. The way I have it installed, I can't reach the switch in the back.
Of course, now I've jinxed myself. So it'll crap out tonight. Crap! - Daedalus81, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10"It's funny how on digg, it's perfectly acceptable to rip on Sony. It's 100% okay to be a Nintendo or Xbox fanboy. But when somebody comes in and defends Sony, they're nothing more than an "ignorant fanboy".
This fanboy crap needs to stop on Digg. Article marked as spam."
I agree with your sentiment whole-heartedly, however, the post above by EmilioLizardo is a horrible way to support Sony without giving other consoles the credibility they deserve. You can't make an argument that says :
Here is everything good about A.
Here is everything bad about B.
A is so much better!
...and then still expect to be treated with respect by the more fanatical enthusiats of item B. If people made good arguments without calling "fanboy" then we wouldn't see any of this crap.
As a consolation at least they are spelling fanboy without an "i". - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9You Xbox/Dreamcast fanboys are really getting sloppy these days...
You guys forgot to try to make the old bogus Sony "Toy Story Graphics" claim.
http://news.com.com/2100-1040-250632.html
"One of the basic premises of the Xbox is to put the power in the hands of the artist," Blackley said, which is why Xbox developers "are achieving a level of visual detail you really get in 'Toy Story.'"
What a moron... - beachesandmusic, on 10/12/2007, -12/+19It's funny how on digg, it's perfectly acceptable to rip on Sony. It's 100% okay to be a Nintendo or Xbox fanboy. But when somebody comes in and defends Sony, they're nothing more than an "ignorant fanboy".
This fanboy crap needs to stop on Digg. Article marked as spam. - joethepeacock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8How about everyone just spend their money on what they want to and SHUT UP ALREADY?
- Daryl209, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13Well....we didn't need an article with pretty graphs to know all of that.
- spurfan15, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14The data on the 6th generation consoles is correct. Over 100 million PS2s have sold, and it happened faster than any game console in history (The only other being Playstation). Meanwhile, the GC and Xbox both hovered around 20 million, or a little over, with the Xbox edging GC out.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8People here also don't realise that them hating Sony won't take other people's sales away. It's a losing battle for them. I remember just before the PS2 came out, there were freaking morons hating on it because of the 4MB video ram, 'jaggies', questionable launch titles, and (alleged) difficulty to program (they always say, 'i know people in the industry' *wank wank*). HOW WRONG THEY WERE.
- orlandogeek, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Blah blah blah. So many people are crying about the price. Yet you KNOW that when Metal Gear Solid 4 comes out, most of the crybabies are going to buy the console. Also, we see everyone bitching about Jack Thompson and saying "the average gamer age is 27 ", etc etc. Since that's true, most people around that age should be at a point in your life where you can afford an infrequent expense such as the PS3. Hell, put the damn thing on lay away at walmart and make payments on it if you have to. If you arent, then tough crap. I'm not a PlayStation fanboy, I have a 360 and all the current consoles and I will be buying a PS3. In closing, I say stop crying. Bury me if you want, but this PS3 bashing is pissing me off and I want my 2 cents heard.
- hchaudh1, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Another moron looking to get on the front page. Digg just represents what's going on in the blogging world. Bash PS3, get tons of hits.
Same old story. PS3 is too expensive. Then don't buy it. Is that so hard. The levels of inaccuracy and fanboyism on Digg are rampant. How come every story that bashes PS3 get on the front page while every story that says something positive about it gets off the front page.
There are tons of people making enough money to be able to afford the PS3. The only complaints I hear about are from people I think are waiting for their parents to buy them a console next christmas.
I was appreciative of the Wii when it came out. but now, people who like the Wii just piss me off. Not because I like the PS3, I do, but because these people are so involved on Digging their own stories up and digging everyone else down to the point that information is inaccurate. These fanboys need to get a grip on themselves. The PS3 is expensive. I am getting one first day. Because guess what, I can afford it. If I was in school or something or I liked Mario or Zelda, I would be looking at a Wii. - rick2k, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Want to know what i think?
i think its going to sell like crazy
Consoles, games and hardware.. there all expensive now days. Yeah everyone agrees its pricey.. but have i seen anyone say no?
Nope.. not in the UK anyway. Preorders are going like mad. - Fraghappy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10I'm not saying the Playstation 3 isn't without its flaws but:
1. Have you compared screenshots and in-game video between the 360, Wii, and PS3. It's marginally better than the 360, but comparatively blows the Wii out of the water in terms of richness of picture and graphical detail, not to mention it is the only console to support 1080p.
2. The Playstation Network Platform will allow people to play multiplayer games without a premium subscription, not to mention it comes with all of the other nifty features Xbox Live has. That one difference will be very big to many gamers.
3. Grand Theft Auto (becoming Sony exclusive again)? Final Fantasy? Those two series alone turn heads, and I'm sure many will come soon. Considering the console is still months away from release, I think it is far too early to judge how many unique titles it will have.
4. Blu-Ray holds more than HD-DVD, and, with the new coating, is much more durable, not to mention it holds a marginally higher level of support from studios and has for awhile. HD-DVD's early release may secure its place in the hearts of the consumers, but it is far too early to call. - cockmaster, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8dammit, how many people spent 500 to 600 bucks on just an ipod. I'd consider this a better value than an ipod. I'm sure they'll sell tons.
- BasouKazuma, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6People say the PS3 will fail like NeoGeo or 3DO simply cuz of the similarties in price. The reason those two systems failed was because those weren't consoles that people could trust. It wasnt from nintendo, sega or sony. They were newcomers to the field. No one was willing to invest all that money on them.
Sony has already established themselves in the gaming world. It is a brand that people have a certain faith in. That faith is what may save Sony and the PS3. - xc3ll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4dude, are u kidding me? You can download 1080p trailers of of apple's freakin website (enter www.apple.com/trailers in your browser, then scroll down to the HD section, then click on one, and click on the big bright 1080P button). I get a lot of 1080p from other sources as well. If you know where to look, you can find a good amount of 1080p material. When Bluray comes out, every release(or at least the ones that count) will be in 1080p. But I guess ignorance is bliss....
- telapan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5People rarely read articles with anti-Sony/pro Nintendo titles. They just digg the article to get it on the front page. Last week there was a title that stated '.. says to sell your Sony stock.' This article got digged like crazy. The funny thing is that the article was really about Sony stock getting upgraded.
- imdwalrus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7C'mon, man...they've got to justify the cost of Microsoft Office SOMEHOW, and who wants to read a video game article full of spreadsheets? :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9"With no HDMI in the "gimped" $500 PS3, good luck playing your Blu-Ray movies on any HDTV that will be sold next year. HD players are more than likely going to REQUIRE an HDMI output to facilitate MPAA regulations."
Bzzzttt!!!
The image constraint token is dead. Wake the ***** up and find some new FUD.
The 499 PS3 will play 1080p movies and games over component.
End of story. - balloot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Uhhhh...90k pounds/year is like $170,000/year. You are probably in the lower 25th quantile for I-bankers. Congratulations.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm convinced that Nintendo runs Digg
- grgt1994, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The historical pricing would be more helpful and meaningful if it were stated in real terms (constant dollar corrected for inflation). Showing nominal values is, well, of little value.
Oh, and what about the pricing on true classic systems (2600, Intellivision, Pong, Coleco, etc.)? - gunmod, on 10/12/2007, -10/+13You MORONS just do NOT get it do you?
The Wii is the ***** GAMECUBE with a new controller.
Same type of games, same graphics, same everything except for your dildo wand.
WHat's sad is all the people who are disillusioned by the Wii will hurt the REAL consoles like the XBOX 360 and the PS3
because they will convinve their friends that the Wii is better, hence PS3 and XBOX 360 will bottom out in the Next generation wars what will be left with? Mario ***** 50,000 and the 400th Quest of Zelda.. God I hate morons. - cosmotic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The only thing these statistics prove is that Nintendo's price point, $250 leads to even smaller market share than the $600 dollar price point. Microsoft's price point is about the same market share as Sony's.
This is all only if you dont think these statistics are crap, which they are. - fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Please stop posting this ***** about the PS3 and Wii until it has actually been confirmed by data. Another jackass opining that the PS3 is priced too high isn't news. Another opinion about how the Wii is the best next-gen system isn't news.
Speculation != fact.
Marked as inaccurate. - rockintom99, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9The ps3 is not cheap. We know this already. Shut up.
- bobeotm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's funny, people dont seem to be bothered to spend hundreds of dollars on their PC to play the latest game, yet to shell out a one time expense for a console that will last you AT LEAST 5 years of gaming, people get up in arms. Gamers shell out 500 bucks for the latest graphics card, or a cool 1000 or more for a gaming rig, yet 600 bucks for a games machine is out of the question?
The average gamer is in their late 20's, who that age DOESN'T have a job? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Component cables have supported 1080p for some time now - you just need to make sure the cables you buy have connectors that are rated for 1080p.
The 499 PS3 version will play 1080p movies over component just fine with any 1080p TV with proper component inputs.
Sorry if that ruins your desire to "think it is *****"
Nothing to see here, move along. - orlandogeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Damn.. that comment was meant for another user..
What I meant to say was
"The control method will be difficult to program for initially, more than likely. Nintendo needs to turn around the issue they had with the N64 & GameCube.. far far too little in the way of long lasting 3rd party support." - orlandogeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Seriously, I want everyone who thinks the price is too high to tell me how much you spent on your last PC graphics card!
