- sullyj, on 10/12/2007, -26/+70Very good news, for once.
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -11/+49Free doesn't always mean it's good. Look at PS2's free online service.
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -7/+43It doesn't sound as streamlined or as feature-filled as Xbox Live, but it could be interesting.
- alecks, on 10/12/2007, -4/+39free or not, at this point, i think people will just go for the better console.
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25Sony has repeatedly said that gaming and simple friends connections will be free - they are just leaving open the possibility of charging for movies, etc.
There is NO WAY MS will drop Xbox live. With 6 million members at $50 a pop, you do not simply get rid of $300M of revenue a year. - McGrude, on 10/12/2007, -6/+28This sounds just like Sony woke up one morning and said "***** we only have a few months left. What the ***** are we going to do for network play? Aha, we'll just otusource it and hope no one gives a rats ass. ***** 'em, we're Sony we don't need pants."
- decay, on 10/12/2007, -20/+38Wonder why he is being dugg down :)
Wait nvm, someone is going to respond with some witty sarcasm or something and get +100. - chedabob, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19wow, i sure see ps3 online beating xbox live soon [/sarcasm]
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19Great move by Sony - allowing another company with online matching to stick with their core competency.
- interiot, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17If Sony ever says for sure that the PS3 online service will be free, there's a very good chance that Microsoft will make Xbox Live free as well. (which is as it should be... Xbox Live is expandng to the PC and merging with MSN IM, and there's no way they're charging PC users for this sort of thing...)
- mousy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17Anything good that comes with Sony, isn't made by them.
- Krush, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Sony has also left open the hosting of games servers. If EA hosts it's own servers, then expect to pay a fee to use them, as with most other companies. The online aspects of the PS3 are really a "wait and see" thing, I just don't think Sony will provide the same service as MS for free. We shall see...
- SimonX314, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11While Xfire seems like a quick solution, there are still some important features that are missing. Match-making, a player feedback system, and a persistent player reputation. Without match making, multiplayer games will be full of players with wildly different skill levels. Also, with out feedback and a player reputation, there will be no incentive to behave courteously online, and no way to avoid mean people. I hope Sony includes these features, otherwise Xfire will be nothing more than a friends list with messaging.
- Oktober, on 10/12/2007, -9/+18Good news for Sony!
Let's see how fast this gets marked "inaccurate" or "lame" - sarusa, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13This is good for Sony. XFire isn't nearly as nice as XBox Live (I use both), but it's sure better than what Sony could have come up with by themselves in the short time left.
- u8myfoood, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13wow sony making improvement on there products, thats UNPOSSIBLE!
jk - MouseCircus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13XFire is actually owned by Viacom.
Personally, I don't really like XFire. From what I've used of it, it's fairly basic. I'm not excited about it, but at least Sony managed make a deal with an online service that is already established.
I don't think they'd fare too well if they started their own service. - Dark_Lord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@ N1tro
Actually, its the other way around, downloading demos and trailers are free, online matchmaking costs money. Other content for games and such are up to the developers. - miketuck3r, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9so we have x fire doing..... and gamespy doing..... so much for a unified service like xbox live
sounds like they are having issues... - Kyurthich, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15Defintley looking forward to this! XFire is my favorite thing to use while playing games on my PC. The PS3 getting it just makes it even better.
Hopefully itll still say the amount of time you have played a game I like to know how much of my life I have wasted away! :D - anamanaman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Brilliant move sony. I for one am excited about this. Hopefully it lets us use our existing xfire accounts and friends list, and is cross compatible between PC and PS3. I'm probably dreaming here, but here's to hoping!
- gamerage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Were they not supposed to be using gamespy? That was news a few months ago.
- Ub3rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I'm confused a bit here. This covers voice chat, IM's, and matching services. That's pretty cool and nice if its free. How exactly are they going to mimic Live Marketplace with this? Or are all the downloads free as well?
What exactly is going to be the business model that keeps this afloat? Ads? Selling user info? Depending on online sales of downloadable classic titles? - SimonX314, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7UPDATE:
"On behalf of Sony Online Entertainment, Kramer attempts to clarify the earnings report's statement: "SOE has been in talks with Xfire about potentially including some of their technology in Untold Legends Dark Kingdom, our PlayStation 3 launch title. This proposed deal is completely separate and independent from the PlayStation Network Platform, and is something that SOE was examining specifically for Dark Kingdom. More information on Xfire and Dark Kingdom will be coming soon." - Jarett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The basic functionality is free. Downloading extra content will not be free- that's where the money will be made. And they make money on games, eh.
- technotimber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6i think it's a lame response to xbox live. ps3 needs something original to keep it in the running.
- Millan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Using XFire is nothing but a big joke. I am no Sony fan boy, but if this is true, Sony is just being stupid. XFire can not compete with XBox Live. For the price you are going to have to play for this console, Sony should do better. I seriously think they dropped the ball on online multiplayer and this is a last ditch effort to offer Sony fans something. So here's your bone, now mortgage your house and buy Sony's PoS PS3!
- CoolDude330, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"Good news for Sony!"
Ever since the PS3 was announced, I thought that was an oxymoron. - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Well, that kinda seals it up for me. I've really disliked Xfire on my PC, and if it's the engine that is going to run the PS3, i'm definetly not checking it out
- teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"Great. So it's still up to the publishers/developers to provide their own servers and there is no regulation. What's the motivation to regulate the "free" online space?
It won't take long for PS3 games to be overrun by hackers, modders, and otherwise cheating jerks.
xfire may provide them with the friends list features, but it isn't going to help the actual online gaming part. Microsoft's servers are what Sony cannot match."
That sounds about right. You get what you pay for people, there is a reason we pay for XBL and Sony still doesnt get it. - nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Xfire vs. Xbox Live vs. GameSpy Arcade
Interesting... - ParmMann, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'm not too sure about this one. I've used Xfire on the PC but find it to be a pretty shabby match making tool.
It's certainly a long long way from XBOX Live.
I personally think that Sony may use Xfire for certain aspects of the Playstation Network, but I'm sure this isn't all there is to it. - andreo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@BobsYourUncle:
You need to wait until payday?! I think you need to get a savings account... - Conglomerate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It's $50 yearly not monthly.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have to agree, this might not be a bad online service, but from what I've seen so far it won't nearly surpass Xbox Live.
- Stwo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6They don't have much time to get this ready for launch.... Let's hope this isnt another crappy ploy by sony.
- piratearggghhh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This shows a big different in company philosophies. The difference between MS and Sony is that Sony is a hardware/electronics company while MS is a software company and this just shows that amount of experience and resources a software company has over a hardware-centric company. Microsoft outsources the hardware while Sony outsources the software. Unfortunately for Sony, at the end of the day, it's software and UI that's the most important thing.
- VipeNess, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7you know kickeroar, you are right. the first to post is the first to get the heat on some situtions. well, xfire has had it ups and down, and everyone knows that, xfire use to have a huge memory leak issue back in the day with older games, but they seemed to fix that issue. i do like the ingame texting, which is cool, not cool is 10 of your friends trying to bomb you to play another game, and you got xfire messages all of the place in your game ;)
- AlDaTbagsNChina, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I didn't like XFire on my Sega Genesis. Why would I like it on a over priced system?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6But it's free... considering the costs of the console , HDTV , HDMI cable , and $60+ games and accessories , would it bee a good idea to add on top of all that a $50 monthly charge?
- ReCkLeSsX, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7This is genius...
But how can people turn this into bad news...?
I'm reading some comments that make this seem like a bad thing... - briansearles, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5XFire is a good, free alternative to something of a better caliber. I happen to find it annoying. If the PC xFire features are closely mirrored to PS3, Xbox Live will walk all over it. Except that it's free. That makes it hard to disappoint.
+1 for Sony. That brings their current balance to around... -300? - cajungator2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow sony, you really showed me something today! You showed me that the xbox is still better than you. Thank you Sony!
- SPARTACVS, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8"Free doesn't always mean it's good. Look at PS2's free online service."
Service? I thought it was just a box with an ethernet port for you to slap on the side of your Ps2. - CarzorStelatis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hahaha. I used to use Xfire for PC gaming, and if the PS3 is using it then God (or your deity of choice) help Sony!
- protogenxl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2XLive Survived for 2 years before Halo2 Came Out
- xavier42, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4600 bucks doesnt get you much these days.
- cajungator2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1mention ten ways its worse
- DubbleA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"UPDATE II: Sony Computer Entertainment America responded to the below report with the following statement: "We can confirm that Sony Online Entertainment is in talks with Viacom and Xfire for a single, specific PS3 game. However, there are no' announcements at this time regarding any discussions between SCEA, Viacom and Xfire."'
- Yokai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Mention 10 ways how xbox live is better than an intergrated online PS3 system that you have never used before? Its going to be a tough one, seeing as you don't have a ps3.
