- Leo55, on 08/16/2008, -12/+46Here is the irony : Xbox outsold PS3 in JAPAN : http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/15/vesperia-helps-x ...
- humptyz, on 08/16/2008, -8/+37How much cheaper does a PS3 have to get? People look at the upfront cost as the only cost involved in buying a system, but that's short-sighted. However much better XBox Live is than the PS3's free online gameplay, a Gold membership is going to cost you $50 per year so if you want online gameplay you've already paid as much as a PS3, and you'll be paying $50 more every year thereafter. Add in WiFi on the 360 and you've paid more for it than a PS3. Whether you care about Blu-Ray is up to you, but it's nice to already have that in the system so when renting movies from Netflix you can choose the Blu-Ray movie option and enjoy the drive beyond games. Should you want a bigger hard drive it's cheaper with the PS3 since any laptop hard drive will do, instead of having to buy custom drives from Microsoft.
I'll say I own a PS3 and not a 360 so I'm obviously biased towards it. It's just when I see people complain about the PS3 cost versus the 360 I scratch my head because the 360 is actually the more expensive system when you factor in total costs. Now if you're just waiting for the PS3 price to drop so you can get a second console on the cheap you might be waiting awhile. - dimer0, on 08/16/2008, -10/+31I own all three consoles, used to use the PS3 only for a BluRay player. After having to send my broken XBox360 back to Microsoft ** THREE ** times to fix red ring of death, unable to read disc problems - and now I have 2 of the USB ports on it which don't have power - I've quit buying software for the 360 altogether, and am buying almost all PS3 software.
That, coupled with some impressive system updates on the PS3 side... Screw Microsoft. - Ins4ne, on 08/16/2008, -2/+21
Somone really has to make a "Fanboy blocker" add-on for the firefox ... - andreusboy, on 08/16/2008, -1/+20I find it ironic how Nintendo's lead is irrelevant in the market. They're drowning in money so they don't care. No gamer games so they don't care ether. Win win? Sigh... I wonder if developers will take the lead into account some time in the future and bring awesome inovative tittles to the console just because of the single numbers fact that they will sell more. It would be nice if just as the PS2 had bucket loads of quality games due to developers deciding to make them for it based on this very fact (along side floods of crap games) they would do the same on the Wii too. While that happens Sony and Microsoft fight for the (now niche?) hardcore market offering nothing really different from one another.
- vashgunfighter, on 08/16/2008, -8/+27True but the title should be worded just a bit better. PS3 opened up a lead in sales in the month of July. It's still trailing the 360 overall by about 5 million units worldwide (about 6.75 million in the U.S. market). Just saying. Still, good news for Sony I suppose. We'll probably see another jump in sales in the coming months for all the systems with some bigger titles landing this fall and of course the holiday bump.
- chkdg8, on 08/16/2008, -3/+21I own all, YES!
- Thorpe, on 08/16/2008, -7/+23That PS2 is still chugging away there. Bless this console. He'll never get old for me. :)
- inactive, on 08/15/2008, -2/+17Is that like an alien smiley? Or a fat guy who has so many chins that have eyes.
- 9x6is42, on 08/15/2008, -8/+22Competition is always nice. I was worried that Sony wasn't going to keep up and Microsoft would eventually monopolize console gaming. The only thing keeping me from buying one is the price and the need for a few more exclusives to help me justify owning it and the 360. The more these companies fight for my dollar, the better it gets for me.
- WhereAmI, on 08/15/2008, -6/+20Microsoft monopolizing any market at all? Never!
- Foxhound1979, on 08/16/2008, -4/+17Never said it was. Just pointed out the fact that it helped move PS3's.
- honutt, on 08/16/2008, -5/+18I think this story is significant only if you take it out of context of the bigger picture. The 360 obviously has still sold the most number of units to date. I think everyone of the console makers admits that in terms of revenue, its not the console sales that matter nearly as much as the game sales. The fact that a 360 game is still leading number of sales tells the whole story.
At some point every console is going to reach a level of market saturation that console sales will decline, but that does not signal that the popularity of the product is waning, merely that there are fewer new customers to sell to. Sony having sold fewer units to date will take longer to reach that point of diminishing console sales than Microsoft. - sonicbliss, on 08/16/2008, -3/+16VGChartz also *estimated* the 360 sold 310k, and the ps3 180k, in US in July
when actually the 360 205k and ps3 224k. They dont seem very reliable, they dont seem to want to amend their figures either.
They still havent posted the official NPD data figures for july respective of Sony and MS, they only commented on Wii sales.. and just press releases from Sony and MS regards NPD data. - santasing, on 08/16/2008, -8/+20That's the american way. Pay a little up front, take the rest on credit and end up paying $800 for something that should have cost $300 to begin with.
- crownedgriffin, on 08/16/2008, -1/+13Yeah. I've been buying a lot of used PS2 games lately since used PS3 games are priced like the disks are made of gold.
- humptyz, on 08/16/2008, -4/+15Actually according to VGChartz, http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php , the PS3 is doing better after launch than the 360.
- Chris1280, on 08/16/2008, -8/+19So the one month because of MGS is a bit different ?
- LimeParrot, on 08/16/2008, -2/+12I'm thinking of buying a PS2 and trying the hundreds of classics on it (I never had a PS2...)
It costs like 12 cents nowadays. - adml_shake, on 08/16/2008, -1/+10I'd like to see how many games sold with each of these units, I know for a while there they were selling less then one game for every (PS3) console sold. Meaning that they were being used just for the blu-ray players and not for game consoles. I'm curious to see if that has gone up recently.
- dood, on 08/16/2008, -3/+11Having Microsoft in the gaming industry has helped gamers, so if this is the result of them "buying" their way in, so be it.
- spikes, on 08/15/2008, -9/+17Microsoft an underdog? They simply played a typical Microsoft style brute force method of using all the profits from their Windows monopoly and bought their entire way into the gaming industry. Its *FINALLY* starting to pay off for them.
- inactive, on 08/16/2008, -5/+13Wait until Iron Man Blu...
- inactive, on 08/16/2008, -6/+13Too bad you're not actually a chick.
- DavidGX, on 08/16/2008, -4/+10I was going to buy a ps3 for FF13... I won't be doing that now.
- crownedgriffin, on 08/16/2008, -7/+13I chose the PS3 over the X360, and I couldn't be happier. Maybe in a year or so I'll get a refurb X360 for a few of the exclusives it's hoarding.
- inactive, on 08/16/2008, -22/+28having never been a Halo fanboy I've only liked the xbox for project gotham, but then ps3 has Gturismo. i don't know if I had to pick one over the other i'd probaly buy the Ps3. I regret buying the 360. never play with it anymore. always digging.
- sn0wmis3r, on 08/16/2008, -16/+22for 1 week because of 1 game, it will go right back next week
- theandy1, on 08/16/2008, -0/+5I never see anything about the iphone, but then again I have apple ***** filtered out.
- theaceoffire, on 08/16/2008, -4/+9Whats the last great Nintendo game?
How long has it been?
Whats the last great 3rd party game?
The well has been a little too dry for my tastes. Nintendo is in a position where getting some great developers would *DESTROY* their competition, and they are just Fudging around.
If the Wii had gotten something like Bioshock, Portal, or Little Big Planet.... *sigh* - santasing, on 08/16/2008, -3/+8MS never competes on merit. And it will monopolize the market if left to its designs.
I am sure if Sony was not doing so well, you would have been here making excuses why paying $100, yes $100 for Live per year is not a big deal because the new avatars add some value or some *****. - sugarazor, on 08/16/2008, -0/+5You are adorable.
- LucasJ218, on 08/17/2008, -0/+4Again seraph talking like he knows something but he's clearly wrong. The PS3 is one of the few future-proof bluray players and is by far the cheapest.
- NipGrip, on 08/16/2008, -2/+6Nobody wants to hear these facts! Let's just make up ***** as to why the PS3 is doing better.
- Forever-Zero, on 08/16/2008, -9/+13I bought a PS3 two weeks ago, and haven't regretted it for a second.
Regardless of all the bad press Sony has made for themselves with Giant Enemy Crabs and Ridge Racer, it's an amazing console. My only complaint at the moment is that a lot of the titles I'm looking forward to haven't been released yet, but Ratchet and Clank, MSG4, and Soul Calibur 4 have kept me quite occupied :) - Chris1280, on 08/16/2008, -3/+7Right because the 360 doesnt have ***** loads more games ?
- frygar, on 08/16/2008, -0/+4...and here we think our economy is trashed because of the housing bubble - obviously it isn't because we're able to purchase a $500 console and then cry about it how much it sucks compared to our other $500 console anonymously online afterward.
- andreusboy, on 08/16/2008, -2/+6Portal + Wii... see its perfect. Too perfect. With some *REAL* decent controls and $20 - $30 price tag you would have an innovative game with a much more huge chance of mass appeal and adoption. I mean yeah its part of the Orange Box but it could stand on its own I'm sure. Hell, Orange Box for Wii doesn't sound that far fetched for that matter.
I just don't know why they don't see it. With the current Wii adoption rate as a developer I would try to make sure I attack that market with a great game (read: not quick n ***** easy to produce shovelware that would only profit me half as much). Sort of like what the PS2 did for Rockstar with GTA.
I don't care in the end which console it is that I get a great game from but that's why now we are in this stagnant sequelfest for the 360/PS3. The whole risk factor/development cost that are much lower on the Wii yet is not being taken advantage of. Then comes out an unknown good game and doesn't sell half as much (but gets out on certain platforms to maintain the status quo) and "oh see thats why we don't do it, it doesn't sell" excuse gets thrown. - theaceoffire, on 08/16/2008, -1/+5People are still buying tones of PS2's.
So I don't think "Everyone has one" is a good enough excuse. - Deadpixel1221, on 08/16/2008, -1/+5Nintendo's lead is only irrelevant to the so called "Hardcore." I think any developer takes an awful risk bringing exclusives to either Sony or Microsoft, which is why neither console is offering anything different from one another.
- bejayel, on 08/16/2008, -2/+5yeah it has more, but really i cant think of 10 that i would actually own where i have 14 ps3 games.
- HappyScrappy, on 08/16/2008, -3/+6Fallout 3 is coming to PS3 also.
Fable doesn't even come close to interesting me.
I LOVE Banjo 1 and 2, but Rare has been a huge pile of ***** lately, it would take a huge turnaround for the new Banjo game to be any good. And the clips/videos aren't encouraging.
Loved Viva Pinata 1, although the limits on pinatas in your island ruined the game for by by the end. I'll get Viva 2 either way, but I kind of expect they won't have fixed that problem. - Sniper, on 08/16/2008, -1/+4Banjo was great...when I was eight.
- KielKilla, on 08/16/2008, -0/+3I don't have an xbox 360.
- sarchosis, on 08/16/2008, -1/+4Fallout 3 is on the PS3 too.
- Fallout911, on 08/16/2008, -1/+4System sales does not equal profitability....especially for Sony since people are buying it for the Bluray player and not for the games.
If Sony doesn't start churning out huge sellers for 3rd party developers things will go pretty sour for them considering that they lose a ***** load of money for every system sold. - MrFurious2k, on 08/16/2008, -2/+5The 360 has to be getting close to hitting market saturation for people who would normally buy this type of gaming console. The PS3 has new life as a BluRay player (and arguably the best one).
- fuzzynyanko, on 08/16/2008, -1/+4Usually Square Enix RPGs are 40-60 hours. If you have problems swapping discs every 12-40 hours...
