- jpt62089, on 10/12/2007, -4/+30Yay! Another version of the PS3 I won't be buying :D
- Itazura, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28You will still be able to buy the other versions, just like you will most likely still be able to buy a Wii with or without dvd support next year.
- Wintrmte, on 10/12/2007, -13/+34Yeah, let's revamp the current PS3 cause it's SUCH a huge success..
- NeoTechni, on 10/12/2007, -15/+32" FIX THE CURRENT VERSION!!"
They are. Since firmware updates for all versions will "fix" all versions.
I love the way you make it sound like PS3 is extremely crippled in comparison to 360 when it came out. Very, fanboyish of you. - twesterm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19HD DVD isn't owning at the moment, but it is doing better than Blue-ray. As for yet another version of the PS3, it's just incredibly silly. I can see why they're doing it, but it's still silly and a desperate move to get as many PS3's as possible into homes.
It's pretty much going to be a PS3 with a different UI and a few different connections marketed as a fancy DVD/Blue-ray player. - treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -13/+27If Sony wants to actually make the PS3 survive they need to:
1) Update the firmware, and I would say the GUI/UI as well as that thing is very ricey IMO
2) Promote game producers to create games that utilize the power of the PS3
3) Ditch the integrated Blu-Ray drive, that approach is not working and HD-DVD is owning atm. They should just do what the 360 has done and offer an add-on. - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Yes, because we all know you were really watching porn.
- treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20"HD-DVD is owning?"
Definitely in terms of price, sales and popularity they are. But it's only early days. - TheXeno, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18"HD-DVD is owning atm"
Uh, I don't know about that. All those current PS3 purchases (roughly around the 1.2 million range now) say a lot about the future of the the format. I believe the last report we saw about HD DVD sales figures, at least when it comes to the 360's add on was around 47,000 sold. That was a month ago. I'm eager to know what the current sales figures are. Plus on the dedicated player side, Amazon has a Samsung blu-ray player (http://www.tiny.cc/bluray) up now that you can snag for $499, right on par with the current HD DVD players. So those that can't stand the PS3 can snag it instead.
I think the war is just beginning. Right now, Blu-ray has far more units out and in homes because of the PS3, plus it's becoming competitively priced in the stand alone player market. And it still currently has 90% of the 7 Hollywood studio support, with 50% exclusive to blu-ray. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray)
Don't kid yourself, blu-ray is looking good right now. - AcidPhysx, on 10/12/2007, -10/+20Sony thinks they had a breakthrough product. Thinks the playstation 3 was a godsend. Thought everyone would HAVE to have one. Don't count your chickens before they're hatched.
- maiku00, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12it just keeps getting better and better
- Dested, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13At least we know there will be no shortage... =P
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Nothing wrong with the current version except lack of games ATM. Runs super quiet (unlike my "jet taking off" 360), Blu-Ray player is NICE, and the online gaming is free.
- LilBoyLuver, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9" FIX THE CURRENT VERSION!!"
Yes because I am sure that it is the same people working on the patches to fix the current console that will be designing any updated version. I hate this logic Sony employs over 158,000 people, do you really think that they are pulling support from the current Ps3 for development of a new model. - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9That's news. I previously believed the PS3 I have been playing non-stop since the Japanese launch was working perfectly. Apparently someone who likely has never touched one thinks they don't work. Rather ironic don't you think?
- LightsOut06, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14"FIX THE CURRENT VERSION" Wow I didnt know this whole time that my PS3 was broken. THANKS FOR OPENING MY EYES WITH THIS ARTICLE.
- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6uh... 2? - Well, if you count different model numbers, then like 8. I think 70001 is the thin one.
- skywake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I thought the current version was Multi-Media based
is Sony trying to tell me that people are buying the current PS3 (as funny as that may sound)
and that they are buying it for the "games"
so now this one isn't "media based" enough and they are making a more media based one
why not make some more games? you know.. like something to rival Gears of War and Zelda... maybe?
hey... what happened to Oblivion on the PS3? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5There are 9 different versions of the PS2 hardware. However, they liked to mix & match components. My PS2 was a crossbreed between v4 and v5 (Which made it a living hell to mod.)
Apart from that, you have the PS2, PSTwo, and the PSX, the media center PS2. - Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Isn't the PS3 already more of a multimedia device than a gaming machine? I don't get the point of this.
- eSecuris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5i'm confused here. I thought the orignal PS3 was a media center? Didn't sony push this as more then a game machine? i mean i thought that was the whole bluray logic.
- Bob042, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6No, this current one has bluray because Sony has decreed that the gamer needs it. I guess the next one will have bluray for people who actually want a multimedia device.
- Leo55, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4multimedia-oriented PlayStation 3?
I thought the current one was suppose to be multimedia-oriented? - TheXeno, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@chicbicyclist, BlackKnight6
If/when any of those gamers who now (and will) own a PS3 to use its HD features (i.e. get a HDTV) do you honestly think they'll go with another format? If they don't use it now, they will. - RazorElite, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Now let's see how many more people will NOT buy this version because of the higher price. You wouldn't think Sony was the same company that insulted MS for doing two versions... and now they want 3. It would be understandable if they were doing a cheaper version, but a more expensive?? Boy boy, when will this ***** company ever learn.
@buckynekkid
The two versions are the 20GB and 60GB. - waynesun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Look at the PSX's (yes, there was one) success in Asia. Never heard of such a thing? Me neither. Now take a look at this planned PS3 "super center". It's not going to be a pretty release.
LocationFree was a flop. The UMD format was a flop. I can't imagine this "special edition ps3" selling. - BlackKnight6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3People call the lack of features compared to the 360 'problems'. That is what most people are trying to say. You can't compare launchs, in fact, doing so makes Sony look bad. Sony had an extra year to keep up with MS and they are still playing catch up.
- algojoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm astounded at the tone of the arguments against the PS3 on digg for the last month. Are there no rational arguments here?
Does anyone recall the 360 launch a year ago? There were massive shortages, there were no must-have games at launch (CoD 2?!), backwards compatibility was limited and spotty at best, no next-gen media, no digital outputs, and quality control problems. MS rushed the 360 out to get a jump on Sony. They have succeeded at that, but remember that console lifespan is 4-6 years and as the decade closes the 360 (and especially the Wii) could look dated, I'm afraid.
Sony took a bold move by including a Bluray drive - upgrading the DVD drive from the PS2. MS decided they couldn't wait for the next-gen media player to be ready. In less than a month since the Sony launch they have now have 5X the installed base of HD-DVD. This gap will only grow. If the PS3 only sells half as well as the PS2, there will be more than 50 M Bluray players installed base in a few years. The 360 will never be able to match this with it's add-on HD-DVD player. Peripherals never sell into more than 10% of there installed base.
There is also a small army of videophiles that are raving over the quality and price of the PS3. Go over to Sound and VIsion and avsforum to see the momentum that is building over there.
Not to beat up on the 360 further, but the Japanese will never buy that console, and they are too big a market to fail in.
In the end, there will be a tigher race between the three consoles. Which is a good thing. - adamchristopher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@gxcdesign
much like playstation 2, it is far from the amazing leap ahead sony promised. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7 Only a small number of people would spend(waste) their money on a system this expensive. This is purely a waste of time for the R&D at Sony. Im guessing that Sony is trying to find out how much damage they could do to a brand in 1 year.
I hope Sony goes back to making those great products that they use to. Not this garbage. It's PLAYstation, sony. WE WANT TO PLAY GAMES SONY!!! I hope that Nintendo Wii and xbox 360 whip the PS3 in sales. So that Sony brings their head down from pride and start working for #1. - Sechy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The PS3 is a video game machine? I thought it was a media center/Blu-Ray drive, where are all the good games? lol.
- MouseCircus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm tired of people using the "it was just released" argument to defend Sony.
Since when it has it ever taken more than a year for a home console to fall behind, and stay behind? As far back as I can remember, each time a console with a very weak launch loses momentum this fast, they've gone under. It doesn't take the average consumer a year+ to decide on whether they're going to choose one system over the other. Typically the console that leads, leads right from the start.
Sure, maybe Sony will have fixed everything in a year, and sure, better games will be on the market by then, but will it be too late? While Sony just sits there with their console, Microsoft keeps gaining momentum and Nintendo is also gaining momentum. What about the PS3? It's been the same story since launch. Sony needs to get on the ball soon. - TheXeno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@twesterm
"How many many people actually bought a PS3 as a Blue-ray player?"
Uh they all technically did.
Hmm, but I doubt you'll be able to say that in 6 months. But I could be wrong. Wouldn't be the the first time. HD DVD had the early bird advantage, but that lead is paper thin now. In fact it wasn't much of a lead at all. The adoption rate of HD players is slow going. Right now it's like watching a race between two turtles. But as it stands, from what numbers I can see the PS3 has done so far, and will do through 2007 and beyond (I'm looking at vgcharts.org, but taking the numbers with a grain of salt), there's far more blu-ray players via PS3 in homes than stand alone HD DVD players + 360 add ons, and the distance, I'm guessing, will increase. The adoption rate of the PS3 itself, frankly, will be far faster than either of the stand alone HD DVD offerings. Again remember we're talking about a turtle race. Take it for what it is, hate it all you want, but Sony's gutsy Trojan horse maneuver will most likely pay off in the end--their turtle is strapped to bruised hare. - NeoTechni, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Ditch the integrated Blu-Ray drive, that approach is not working and HD-DVD is owning atm"
Ditch the ability to play PS3 games, yeah that will work perfectly, moron - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's about marketting. If they've ***** up the launch, they're going to have bad marketing for the lifetime of the launch.
I see nothing wrong with the PS3, but it is still a Playstation, and at the moment there are no games that make me want to buy it. If I wanted a home theatre system, I'd buy a proper one. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4What kind of trash article is this? The bias is obvious in both the article and the title here on Digg. I'm not here to defend the PS3--I don't want one either--but this article isn't Dig-worthy. Buried for lameness.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Itazura
The DVD player for the Nintendo Wii is going to be a software one, so it'll most likely be distributed via Virtual Console. - Ajajadude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yeah, the PS3 came out stumbling, but I love how everyone seems to have declared the war over between the 3 latest consoles on the market today despite it only being about 3 months since all 3 came out. I don't have any of the new consoles and I plan on buying all 3 (the 360 and PS3 once they've both got things worked out). Anyone who bases their opinion on the first batch of consoles is a moron.
I'm getting tired of these fanboy "news" stories being dugg which give you little-to-no information at all. This is just yet another opinion piece being played off as a news article.
Now I'll sit back and watch myself get dugg down! - Dvoid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Wow, it's been 3 months already? I STILL don't have any reason to buy a PS3...
Zelda and Gears of War are comfortably sitting on top of my TV however... - gwolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pretty clear they are thinking, " we screwed up".
- gwolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A lack of quality games isn't an "only thing wrong", its an every thing wrong with a game system.
- jerr0328, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3omg yeah, I saw this post like last year!
- eSecuris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2PS3 std.
PS3 Premium - foolishimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hi Gentlemen,
This is a totally bogus story that was discredited back on 12/21. Here's the post from Aegis9975 that pointed that out. Of course do not reality let you get in the way of sage head shacking and shrill girly sony bashing.

The original comment by Kutaragi was done on Watch Impress, a Japanese site, the interviewer, Honda, said an AV-centric PS3 would be the next logical the for the PS3, he asked Kutaragi and he replied, 'I would like that too, I'll promise to start a project". This was a very short blurb on an article that was really about network features of the PS3 that even the writer treated it as such.
This was then picked up by Engadget and blown into "Kutaragi sez 'I promise' a AV-centric PS3". After which, the other sites picked it up and started adding other speculation such as it costing $2,000, "anti-shake isulators", and a healthy amount of Sony-bashing that had nothing to do with the original comment.

Original article the quote was from:
http://pc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/2006/1219/mobile360.htm - adamchristopher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2or unless your counting what sony promised and didn't deliver.
- TheXeno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@treelovinhippie
Yeah, I'm watching the fight fairly closely. I honestly don't care which HD format wins, though I prefer blu-ray based on specs, I just want a format to emerge as the majority leader and have this "format war" to be done and over with. It'll be interesting to see how it all plays out. - ToeCheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's strange cause the Best Buys in the NY Tri-State are sold out. I knew a new shipment came in today as I drove home last night at 3AM and a line was forming at Best Buy in NJ. They issued PS3 purchase tickets at 6AM.
- TheXeno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I know! Screw them for wanting to profit substantially! What they hell to they think they are, a business?
- halosniper7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2add this to the ps3's failures timeline or whatever.
- tarjan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One of twenty or so local best buys received 115 60gb ps3s and the rest received 70-80. They *all* sold out within one hour of the stores opening. While people aren't flocking to ebay to buy, the units are still flying off the shelves. The hype about the ps3 sitting on shelves or being a failure is just that, hype.
