- themastersb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+370Imagine being 101 in line
- suprememilo, on 10/12/2007, -16/+208They first 100 may have gotten free TVs, but I still doubt they got free HDMI cables.
- bittertea, on 10/12/2007, -32/+175If nintendo hand out 100 hdtv, mostly everyone on digg would call them god, best company alive. When Sony hand out free HDtv's, they call it desperation. We're not talking about cheap wristband or poster here, we're talking about an hdtv.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -18/+139Correction, it seems that only the first 100 customers got one, but there weren't all that many more than 100 people there!
- pikpikcarrotmon, on 10/12/2007, -41/+137Watch Sony's next claim, it'll be the first time they tell the truth. "We gave an HDTV to everyone who bought a PS3 in Europe!"
- chocobomog, on 10/12/2007, -13/+96I call it "spell check", try it next time.
- rockforever, on 10/12/2007, -32/+112Wow, Sony does something incredibly smart and you guys just try and make a negative spin on it. They've tried all kinds of media hype and it hasn't worked for them in the past couple of months (or to some, years), but this is back down to the basics. This is just a great idea. Something so simple. No elaborate advertising campaign, just hand out free stuff. I imagine this is comparable to the amount of free stuff most companies give out at conventions anyways.
- SGagnon, on 10/12/2007, -6/+70Nah, no need for Nintendo to give away HDTV, the Wii doesn't play in HD anyway...
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -20/+75Oh shut up. If this were Nintendo or Microsoft you'd be ***** yourself with adoration.
- Toast1185, on 10/12/2007, -15/+68I think it went something like this.
"YOU GET A TV! AND YOU GET A TV! AND YOU GET A TV!..." - goldfenix, on 10/12/2007, -8/+56Useless? I would kill a man for a replica of Link's Sword. But only in Vegas. And just to watch him die.
- bangbangblah, on 10/12/2007, -9/+50Who cares, that's awesome (if you were there).
- quantumHobbit, on 10/12/2007, -14/+52Maybe Sony realized that few people care about the graphical power of the PS3 because not that many people own HDTV's. That or their desperate for synergy.
Oh and to the people complaining that if Nintendo did this the reaction would be different. Well Nintendo would never give out TV's. They would give out something useless like a replica of Link's sword or a giant stuffed Donkey Kong. - heepajunk, on 10/12/2007, -6/+40"do i still have to buy the ps3?"
- burnttoast11, on 10/12/2007, -5/+39They were already in line, they were already going to buy the PS3. So I wouldn't quite say Sony was buying them.
- VicousT, on 10/12/2007, -6/+40Buy me Sony. Please?
- LiquidChimera, on 10/12/2007, -6/+38How was this desperation if it wasn't announced. It's a bonus for taking a chance
- rockforever, on 10/12/2007, -9/+37"These are TVs ranging from $2,633.00 - $3,899.99 (according to PriceGrabber.com)" 3000 (average price) x 100 = 300,000.
1. Not the amount sony is losing by giving these out. They don't cost that much to make, just to sell. So after inflation, retail costs, and other costs that prolly goes down a bit.
2. Probably a lot less than a marketing campaign filled with advertisements and other schemes (which have historically backfired for Sony)
3. 300,000 probably equals the amount of crap they give at conventions anyways. If you've ever been to any kind of major convention they give out major amounts of worthless crap. Why not give out a few (yea, 100 is no skin off their back) great items?
4. This basic and looks really good in frontpage news. If Sony finds a way to screw this one up there is no hope for them. Companies give away lotsa stuff all the time and it usually costs more than this. - 1jaxstate1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28Sweet deal for the people who were waiting.
- portis, on 10/12/2007, -53/+80I got digged down, but I am going to say it again, because IT IS THE TRUTH. I know you Sony fanboys don't like to hear it, but hey, the truth hurts sometimes.
That was a HUGE sign of DESPERATION on Sony's part. - Septimus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28Number 120 in the que has already said he got the TV also, so I guess all 127 did in the end.
- Jgsublime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21So, in the United States we got fights and shootings in our PS3 launch lines!!!!!
- heinousjay, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25Come on man, you have to be able to do better than that. It's not even mildly amusing. It's nothing close to clever. It's about as dumb as you could possibly make it, actually.
For example, get a box for a 360, take a dump on it, and label it Xbox three-*****. That's not funny at all, and it's miles ahead of that tripe. - TheKricket, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23"Oh, and go talk about the Wii some more too, since it has all of 10 games worth playing."
isnt that, like, 8 more than the ps3 has? - TheIconoclast31, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Of course Sony did it for the PR points. And then the PR will hopefully lead to more sales, and the sales will hopefully lead to more profit. That's the motivation of every company, and there's nothing wrong with that.
For example, if they started handing out Sony backpacks, I'd think that was pretty condescending ("Here's a Sony backpack, go buy our console!"). But in this case, it's a FREAKING HDTV.
@ronin: And if this encourages companies to cut advertising costs and start giving out HDTVs to their customers, I'm fine with that too. - TheRealDj, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20DAMN. You certainly don't see that in a Wii line.
- skydivingdutch, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22You mean everyone got a free HD telly
- anj747, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20Actually, the announcement of the TV giveaway was only given a few minutes prior to midnight to those who'd already been queueing the longest - so perhaps no quite the "desperate" act to buff up the queues some of you may think. Retail analysts have suggested the reason that there weren't more people queueing up was because of the ample stock available, given this is a March launch, as opposed to a Xmas launch - where there is always a rush to get gifts under Xmas trees :)
- Rikkochet, on 10/12/2007, -12/+25I agree with you and I'm still one of those people you're talking about.
Nintendo has no need to buy loyal customers (one could argue that them pulling this at the Wii launch would have been a gimmick), Sony does.
Bravia ain't a bad TV - good PR move, Sony, but I'm sufficiently jaded to know that's all it was. - brownspank, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Bashers never run out of nails.
- RunnyBabbit, on 10/12/2007, -17/+30...And the guy that said it was desperation got buried.
Why do people cite unpopular opinions as if they're popular? - majinboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Uh do you even know where Australia is? We had our PS3 launch at-least 10 hours before England had theirs...
- IVIrMP3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11"Reno is like Mexico, except everyone is on Crystal Meth and prostitution is legal."
Thankyou Reno 911 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11The console retails for £424.99 which is US$834 at the current exchange rate.
- saitama, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14So meanwhile here in Australia, we have to pay almost double the Japan price and 25% more than the US price, but our PS3 consumers get nothing? I mean, why London? Is it just the exposure? The cachet of handing out freebies in such a famous city? I don't get it, and to be frank it makes me dislike Sony just a little more. Sony clearly doesn't need friends where I live, and I don't need a friend like Sony.
- LoganT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I guarantee that the people who are insulting Sony are just mad it didn't happen to them.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Why? As far as I know it wasn't advertised, so there was no benefit on the launch night. Bringing in celebrities for a party and ***** is more that kind of tactic. Not saying they needed it, I'm just comparing the events.
But you can bet they'll be lining up for the next one. - sharmon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12This seems to be the first thing Sony has handed out beyond their usual arrogant statements. It almost has me starting to believe they appreciate the consumer. Nice work Sony.
- ucbrave92, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13@goldfenix
i think you mean Reno not Vegas - daridave, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18That's very nice from SONY.
...nothing else to add. Nope, no "insert daily-SONY-insult-on-digg" here, folks. - Shenaniganz08, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10well that will teach all those f-ing ebayers next time
still good pr job sony :D - scratt, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17Nice one Sony. Way to go....
- Dpack1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12we didnt drop a couple bombs on Japan back in the 40's... didnt you know the only reason they started making annoying cars and electronics over the past 60 years was just as a form of payback for you guys? Of course they aint gonna give americans free TVs.
- rick2k, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11English dont know what a HDTV is? bwahahah! 4 years behind what the are you on about?
Do you even know where england is becuase you sure do speek *****. - Teej, on 10/12/2007, -11/+19Oh come on, desperation? This is the first good PS3 marketing move Sony has made in the console's history. Remember those television commercials?
- pedro101, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13I'm a Wii "fanboy" and I'm applauding Sony for this generous move. Heck, I'll even digg this story.
- JorgeGT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"XZ Rules" ? How old are you, 11?
(If older, shoot yourself) - bakingoven, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Am I the only one who feels left out, and angry... wish I was there DAMMIT!
- clinko, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14That's nice, all Sony gave me was a new memory stick format.
- Mokey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9As much as I dislike Sony these days, this was an excellent bit of marketing.
I'm going to be hearing about this all ***** day. -
