Sony fails to deliver PSP camera as planned, bad strategic move?
psp3d.xhardwarereviews.com — At the 2006 PlayStation Business Briefing months ago, Sony presented the audience with slides revealing the ultimate timeline of the PSP's firmware updates, new accessories, etc, but has failed to deliver these promises; not only will this hurt consumer trust, but also, their stock.

- cessax, on 10/12/2007, -9/+11psp camera seems pretty useless to me, but still, its the principal. bad sony, bad!
- DoctorNo, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15Marked Inaccurate. Actually lots of information has been released and it seems to be on schedule, official website opened months ago and is scheduled for release in Japan for the holiday season. Supposedly the new PSP camera (comes with a mic) allows VOIP video calls and in-game video messaging and chatting,

- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Delays are commonplace in this industry. If there are people out there that aren't used to it, they'd better GET used to it. It's not going to change any time soon.
- achoo5000, on 10/12/2007, -9/+11Don't hold the companies accountable, just get used to it!
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Anyone who has actually worked, particularly in a technology related field will be aware of the realities of delays for many and varied reasons. Everyone else basically has no idea.
Burried for being yet another pointless FUD article. I mean, wow a small camera accessory hasn't been released yet. - Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4Well, for Sony, this company is in a slow death slide. The PSP was an utter failure, and the fact that Sony isn't maintaining a release schedule for new firmware and accessories seems to suggest that perhaps the company is abandoning the PSP or focusing on other things (like perhaps making sure the PS3 doesn't slip in its release schedule).
I can accept the fact that companies often never make their target release dates for products, but with Sony, this is a clear indication that even the company is losing focus on the PSP which is sealing its fate. This is not the same as slipping a release date, this suggesting that Sony isn't even offering these new features after announcing them ealier in the year. - VTmruhlin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5My company is currently more obsessed with maintaining a release schedule than we are with delivering a quality product. There's an incentive program now for people who work overtime, and my inbox gets flooded with frantic emails asking for help the night before a build. Maybe we shouldn't have promised so much?
- NeoTechni, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3Sony claimed theyd be available in November, it's not November yet.
- danneyboey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Err, the slide says it was supposed to come out in September.
- apoc06, on 10/12/2007, -10/+8every software and hardware company is hit with delays.
the wii was supposed to be released in october and well before the ps3. the xbox360 was supposed to be launched with an hddvd drive. the hddvd drive was supposed to be released months ago. the xbox360 camera was released late. software and hardware constantly misses deadline. twilight princess was supposed to be released when originally? no one holds nintendo or microsoft responsible for missing a deadline or two. so i dont hold sony guilty either. i only have problems with halfbaked hardware/ software.
or you could look at the opposite end of the spectrum, where companies would all be like apple and release their products the day after their announcement. in the interim, the companies would leave gamers in the dark. reporters would not be privy to the 2006 business briefing. since the majority gamer demographic needs to actually save up money to make most video game related purchases, launching a product the day after announcement doesn't work well.
give the companies a break. they have to commit large amounts of time and money into testing each product and piece of software thoroughly, and redesigning if necessary. they have to deal with submitting the product to differing international standards organizations, performing translations and other things we take for granted if they dont apply to each of us as individuals. i would rather wait an extra month on a camera, than to have to worry about my camera exploding because sony had to rush it to market. who wants a faulty set of firmware bricking their psp just because sony needed to rush it in order to meet their projection?
company projections are serious things. its not like a homework assignment. no points are taken off if its late [as long as it is finished in the quarter promised]. in fact, points are taken off only if they release an imperfect product. each product can make or break millions from a company. a projection is not a promise to gamers; the 2006 business briefing was not a promise to gamers; the meeting was directed at partners and investors. a projection is a vague timeline so that investors know what type of performance to expect from the company based on what is going to be released and in which quarter.- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Nobody from Nintendo ever said the Wii would launch in October. The bloggers were fantasizing.
But, it is true that almost every electronics company has delays, it's a part of the business - apoc06, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7wow, im getting modded down for "incorrectly" saying that nintendo stated that the wii would launch in october? i guess all the rest of my points are irrelevant after that, huh?
- JohnyD, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1HAHAhahAHHA HOLY *****!
Fanboy anyone? I wouldn't be surprised if apoc06 had already bought a PS3 pre-release slip off eBay for $1500!!
LOL, oh apoc... you made me laugh.
Wii360 4TW! ;) - CAvenger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"i guess all the rest of my points are irrelevant after that, huh?"
You must be new to digg.
The -diggs came from your assholic tone, by the way. - apoc06, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4what does my comment have to do with the ps3? and whether i have/ want one?
"Wii360 4TW! ;)"?!?!? no comment.
the point is every company misses a deadline here and there. as long as it released in the same quarter, investors wont get too miffled. non-news.
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Nobody from Nintendo ever said the Wii would launch in October. The bloggers were fantasizing.
- CAvenger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9What I want to know is where the ***** the official PS1 emulation is.
- Tarmanydyn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7In the 3.0 beta Firmware that's being trialed, sheesh, do you people pay attention?
- CAvenger, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4We all know Sony always tells the truth.
OH WAIT. - Tarmanydyn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Yes, cause there's such a thing as someone or something that 'always' tells the truth, your argument is moot.
And for christ sake, you bitch about not hearing about the PS1 emu details, then when I give them to you, you claim Sony is simply lying about it? Make up your mind, sheesh, you Sony haters are digging... but you aren't finding much... - CAvenger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1*edit* bury me, responding to presumptious morons is a waste of time.
- Modulo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@CAvenger: I like to waste time. :)
- lorensingley, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5I think it is a smart move on sony's part to stop producing monitors. It seems like they have much too much on thier plate as it is with PS3 and blu-Ray etc. Maybe it will give them a little breathing room.
- TroyBenedict, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Is not delivering a camera really all that bad of a move? I'd liken it to the camera that was made for the GameBoy. Does anybody remember that? Too gimicky of an accessory. If Sony is bad about coming out with good games for the PSP, then just think about the lack of support for software titles that utilize the camera.
I'm more concerned with the truth behind being able to play PS1 games on my PSP than having a camera to take. When will we hear more about that?- JohnyD, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1haha, gimmicky yes.... but dude... it was sooooooo cool! I still have (and use) mine from time to time.
Of course Sony is just copying the old Gameboy one.... so GTH SONY! =D
- JohnyD, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1haha, gimmicky yes.... but dude... it was sooooooo cool! I still have (and use) mine from time to time.
- jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5uuuh, the greater question is... 'Does anyone care?'
- ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Spot on jellygraph.
I've said this before and I'll say it again - no amount of silly accessories is going to save the PSP... cameras, GPS, it's all crap. Games (not ports) are what can save this handheld if anything.
- ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Spot on jellygraph.
- efjenkins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I am MUCH more jazzed about GPS for the PSP than a camera. I've got cameras out the wazoo, but if I could turn my Tekken: Dark Ressurection playing, web browsing, picture viewing, The Colbert Report playing PSP into a GPS device too, all the better.
Camera? Meh...
GPS? Woot! - clinko, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3I forgot I had a PSP. How much do they go for on eBay anyway? It's 1.5'd
- axel2k, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Maybe I'm way off base here, but who cares about the PSP any more?
- Modulo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1and yet, here you are.
- Spankov, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9"The PSP was an utter failure" - True it's being outsold in Japan by the DS but sales figures across the world are pretty good and not at all 'an utter failure'.
- daridave, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6True. The NGage could be considered a failure, but not the PSP. It failed to meet expecations -- but the first two letters "PS" are making sure it's not dying miserably.
This isn't fanboyism or hating -- I'm serious. I own one... and while I'm mad because I have no content for it and I also don't even like SONY as a company, I will forever defend it as a great peice of hardware. - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm still thoroughly enjoying my PSP. If you can homebrew on it, it's a gem. I can play PSP games as well as SNES games which bear a _striking_ resemblance to current DS titles ;) Mario Kart anyone (SNES alread was split screen, plays very very similarly)? It's country AND western.
And I have said this before: anyone that insists that a product which has sold tens of millions is a failure then they have their head burried riiiiight up their arse.
For a first effort in a monopolised market, it's a resounding success. - Mullinator, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3It is an utter failure if you consider what most people (including Sony I think) were expecting it to do. Everyone seemed certain originally that the PSP would do to Nintendo's handheld market what the PS1 did to Nintendo's home console market. I still remember Sony talking all smug and acting like something like that was a given.
If you consider that then yes it was an utter failure considering what it was designed to do.
- daridave, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6True. The NGage could be considered a failure, but not the PSP. It failed to meet expecations -- but the first two letters "PS" are making sure it's not dying miserably.
- Tarmanydyn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5If I'm not going blind, that slide in the digged article released all the way back in March... pay attention to current events people:
http://pgrevolution.com/2006/08/31/more-psp-camera-and-gps-details-released/
And why are people digging some guy ranting on a forum? Get some standards Sony bashers...
Buried as inaccurate. - BigBoogie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5wait, no psp camera is going to hurt sony? ummmmm, no.
- stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1People still care about the PSP? News to me....
- JoeyDeacon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2In other news Duke Nukem annouced for PSP.
- danneyboey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Personally, I think the article has much more emphasize on the whole fact that Sony is showing less and less support for the PSP, than the idea that "delays are bad" that a lot of comments seem to be singling out.
Digged. - mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Whats the camera for?
- shampoovta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4 Sony, Sony, Sony can you never be on time?
Go to the office and get a tardy pass. You know these tardy add up and effect your grade. - addicted68098, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually it only says camera / gps library which are in place, basicly its camera/gps ready, it must need to be pluged in to be activated.
