- Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8You think the Wii is "going with the status quo?" Really?
What about the DS? Were two screens, a microphone, and touch-sensitivity too commonplace for you? - BloodJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9This is hilarious. Meanwhile, Nintendo will profit after selling the first Wii.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7What are you talking about? The PS3, though it does have some crazy hardware, is hardly innovation. It is more invention, yet then again its still silicon. You cant call better graphics and processing power "innovative."
Nintendo... Status quo? What toads have you been licking? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6You know, when you put your money in the stock market, you can no longer spend that money (at least not right away) on anything else. You are "losing" that money in the short term.
Why do you do it then? Because you expect to get more than that in the future.
Same ***** thing. Sony is INVESTING $875 million in the hopes of making much much more than that over the next 4-5 years. And they almost certainly WILL. - antipro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4its actually more effective if you hit the reply button and reply to the guy who posted instead of starting your own thread.
Because after a bunch of other people have replied to him for being an idiot your thread gets pushed down and then doesn't make any sense because now its out of context. - antipro, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5well Nintendo will profit after they recoup the expenses of reseach and marketing etc.
- MassaYoda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Aw camon... batarang controllers are innovative. :) In all seriousness I haven't heard a thing innovative about the PS3, but that's not necessarily bad. I mean innovation is great and all, but it did get us the power glove. "It's so bad". I like innovation, but I also want them to do it right. Give me the kick-ass base console, and then take a breath and get to work on your innovative bits. Just get them right and don't make a bunch of accessories no one will care about a month after they're released.
- jull1234, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Any idea how this figure compares to Microsoft's similar "losses" on the 360? In any case, loss seems like a harsh word. Wager (or raise?) seems to apply better.
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Anything that hurts Sony makes me happy, from consoles to music to proprietary hardware. Die, Sony, die.
- duke_nate, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6100 billion yen = approx 1 billion USD
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Because...um....yen is not the same thing as US dollars.
- davidv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's not *really* about graphics for Sony. They have the future of blu-ray riding on ps3, and that in the long run is well worth the ~$1 Billion price tag.
- moges, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Agreed, Sony's recent "actions" haven't given the company a good light, and the fact is, that if blu-ray fails, Sony will fall. Hard. They can't afford to loose ANOTHER format war, and then what will happen to the PS3?
Put simply: The PS3 may no longer even be supported in 3-4 years. Harsh, but true. - Silencer7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"...Okay, check this out. We'll have the 100 billion yen loss, sure....but then we'll find a way to LOSE that loss, and everything comes up Sony!"
- daemonx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Exactly what i was gonna say...
- razmig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1to koshak,
first of all, if the blu-ray does fail, why would anyone want to purchase a console with blu-ray built in, especially if it costs more than any of the other systems.
second of all, if you would like to be a smart ass about spelling mistakes and such, maybe you should work on your grammar.
and please, RELAX. - happyfundave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1agreed, we all know this happens with most consoles (Nintendo excluded) and it doesn't need to be stated over and over and over again.
- DoorFrame, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3A loss of a loss is a gain! They're in great shape!
- ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Meanwhile, Nintendo will profit after selling the first Wii."
Sigh... that is how I paid my way through college... - quamb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"That's what they get for innovating. You can go with the status quo like Nintendo or you can go big and hope your audience enjoys good gaming."
So, in your world, Bigger, Faster and Expensive = innovation? Are you kidding me?
The PS3 is going to kick ass, sure, but there isn't ONE thing I've heard about Sony's machine that is innovative. - Destinatus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why is everybody getting modded down that isn't saying things to cricize the PS3 and praise the Wii. Also, isn't the cell processor innovative?
Not to say I'm one way or another, I'll probably get both. - davidv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ merreborn
Seriously? Have you just turned your head and coughed at all those analysts reports that the ps3 costs $800 to $900 to manufactre? Or maybe you think they'll try and sell them at $1,100 to make some profit, those bastards! - dude3609, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Keep in mind that sony will gain it back and more as hardware prices get cheaper over the next few years. Sure the console price may drop too in about 4 years time but the price to create them will drop much faster.
- msaleem, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Read the story. Or at least read the description. Its $871.6 million.

LWB - SP33DFR34K, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It sounds like someone likes throwing the word "status quo" around. To those who don't know what status quo means, it means in 7of7 context, to simply not change the way in which one operates. In this case, Nintendo not really changing its stereotypical kid like game play.
Now, Mr. Bigshot wanted to throw around the word status quo by saying that Nintendo wants to maintain their status quo. Maybe they want to keep this because it works for them? They have been in the market for a long time, they know what they are doing. Sure, they may be a little lame when compared to Microsoft/Sony, but they know how to make games and hardware that work together. Don't even start the whole mess about market share, it just gets nasty and gets no where. So if by status quo, you mean making hardware and games that work, then Nintendo is strongly guilty of maintain their status quo of what would be referred to as "successful." - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Good graphics are synonymous with good gameplay.
Be realistic here; how much fun would you have with pixelated graphics?
You could have a great concept for a game, and maybe it would even be fun with pixelated graphics, but the "fun factor" will very likely improve if you give it enhanced graphics (pixelated vs. smooth, polygonal shapes with high-resolution textures). - shwaa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Destinatus- One word: groupthink. Democracy has its benefits, and like everything else it has its ugly side. The same would happen to comments that are not completely bashing Microsoft, RIAA, MPAA, DRM, etc. People (in general agreement) try to silence those who have differing views, even if they present an argument worth consideration. Actually, some of the worst mistakes in history were in part caused by groupthink. Just a recent example from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groupthink
"US Senate Intelligence Committee's Report on the U.S. Intelligence Community's Prewar Intelligence Assessments on Iraq blamed groupthink for failures to correctly interpret intelligence relating to Iraq's weapons of mass destruction capabilities" - smellslikerobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0MS lost something like $150/xbox 360 and sony is going to lose nearly $250 on each ps3. Theres an article on Wii that explains the loss/profit of all three system launches.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4No, when you buy stock, or anything for that matter, you get whatever you bought in return.
Sony is planning on selling things for more than they cost to make. It is indeed an investment of sorts, but it's not at all comperable to buying stock, or anything of the sort.
They're planning a massive outlay in hopes of developing demand for playstation licensing deals. - SuperBeast, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Metal Gear Solid 4 is all the quality you need.
- stevenley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0this is like the 3rd time this sort of article has been posted to digg in the past month. STOP!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0IF BluRay fails, people will simply buy the PS3 for the games. Why would it make it any different than the PS2 or PSX? You think people were really buying the PSX for the CD-player, or the PS2 for the DVD player?
And damn it! PLEASE make yourself seem semi-intelligent and learn the difference between LOOSE and LOSE! How ***** hard is it to spell LOSE correctly! We are talking FIRST GRADE SPELLING! IS your eduation level truly at a level BELOW that of first grade? - CoolSilver, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4It will be even greater since I will never buy one.
Boycott Sony. - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Oh, we've got a sense of humor. That ***** just wasn't funny.
- davidv, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1wrong reply >
- SakisRakis, on 10/12/2007, -9/+6Are graphics really worth near 1 billion dollars? How about we get some quality games insted!
- shwaa, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Nintendo's new controller is basically what everyone is talking about when they say it's innovative. It surely is, but.. it can be reproduced. As far as I know, you can't patent motion sensing. The point being: everything you can do on the Wii you can also do on the PS3 (with an add-on motion sensing controller), and with better graphics too.
- swaggadocio, on 08/20/2008, -6/+2Thats a whole lot of moolah
- Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2how is sony innovating? all tehya re doing is releasing a console that will be graphically surpassed by PC in 6 months.
- Skrawn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Me thinks that cliffzdude and GNiMeLF don't know anything about the world beyond thier monitor. I don't think anyone would bid on that kind of humor. You know, the kind that isn't funny.
- quamb, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Agreed. Sony and Microsoft are going crazy with their hardware - perhaps a little over the top. Let's hope developers actually make good games with it.
- cliffzdude, on 10/12/2007, -8/+0Me thinks poor GNiMeLF was joking, you see...
Note to self, mention to friends on DIGG that eBay is having a special on "sense-o-humor" implants next week.
Share the news! - treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1How did it suddenly go from $1bil in loss to $100bil in loss?
i.e. wasn't there a previous story that said Sony was expecting to lose $1billion? - KhadBanks, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2Haha That is the first thing I thought when I thought it, I think.
- dude3609, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2Its not going to cost sony anything as theyre going to make a profit off this in the long run, support from gamers, as well as support from 3rd party developers seeking to create really good games.
Are you tryin to say you want a ***** console with good games? NES has super mario 3 which was pretty good.. you can probably get one off ebay. Or.. Would you rather have a ps3? Quit complaining. - 7of7, on 10/12/2007, -15/+3Nintendo could put 50 screens on their handhelds and you'd still just be playing Mario on a 50 screen handheld. On the other hand the power and quality of the PS3 can combine lush amazing environments with high quality game play like Oblivion. Nintendo is all gimmicks and the status quo.
