- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -13/+41Here's my theory:
Sony knows the PS3 is going to be a hard sell to anyone outside hardcore gamers, technophiles, and the independently wealthy. They know that these people will buy a sack of dog ***** with a Sony label on it as long as it will play Metal Gear Solid or Final Fantasy. By slowly trickling out consoles and games over a longer period of time they can honestly claim that their PS3 has "sold out" consistently over "X" amount of time.
If they release a few million consoles right at the beginning and they're all sold out, the hardcore will have their console already and now the only people to sell it to would be the average joe and casual gamer. These people will be a little more rational and hesitant to spend just under a grand to play video games. - lucask, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22money earned today > money earned tomorrow
you can invest todays profits for more returns tomorrow, that's not a very smart idea to defer your revenune just to say "we've been selling out" - vdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16The title is hyperbole, not literally what Sony are seeking to do. Though it sure does seem like it.
- rugger, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19that's ok, people will buy the ps3 regardless of games right?
- RazorElite, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20When you have a shortage of games, it can't get worst than that. If there is anything that is ALWAYS in full supply, it is games. Can you imagine after waiting in line for 12+ hours and spending $600+ on your brand new console and now you can't even get any games for it. Now that would be some *****.
- Stalks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12BluParadox, it actually gives more incentive to buy a PS3 just to sell it on eBay. With stock guarenteed to run out shortly after release, the re-sell price will soar for those that didn't buy one during the initial rush.
- cbiz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Sony has gotten very, very good at pissing fans off.
- nykzero, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14I think they should just start from scratch. The great ideas that they had are now greatly overshadowed by incompetence high in the ranks of Sony. I never thought that I would be betting on Nintendo again, but I think they will come to be the most mainstream.
- positron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Never thought of it that way. It just hadn't crossed my mind that Sony was actually expecting the PS3 *not* to sell. But now that you mention it, it makes perfect sense. Short availability at launch (especially with the low end package), the slow trickle of info since E3, no high visibility marketing campaign. Seems they actually understand that the people who plan to buy one have already made that decision.
So, they stick with a high price-point and ensure that supply doesn't exceed demand. Those that are willing to buy at launch price 'subsidize' the console while Sony work on improving and optimizing manufacturing. Then they hit us with early and steady price reductions. By this time a reasonable amount of games have been released and most people will have had a chance to see it in action. With a more reasonable price and a now adequate library, they push for the mainstream market.
That actually seems reasonable to me and would go a long way toward explaining why it seems they are intent on 'sinking' the PS3. Then again, maybe I'm giving them too much credit. - carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7huh? either there's some mal-formed humor there or there is something wrong with your powers of reason... why not get a ps2 to play ps2 games?
- BortQ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The linked post is from September 11th - that would be 12 days ago. So where's the new information?
- pathy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Anyone that dislikes the following :
Apple, anything related to Apple.
Stewart or Colbert.
Nintendo, anything related to Nintendo.
Misinformed Blogs spreading random crap that the author heard from some guy who heard it from another guy who SWEARS the guy who told him was the head of whatever he was spreading crap about. - Ashkc88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Sadly you were the second person to mention the Wii. Last I checked people were talking about the Xbox 360.
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6aside from it being a more cost intensive pressing proceedure, which has been plagued by production problems for a long time. when sony was making a big huff about blue ray a year ago, it said it would be able to mass press the discs at all but the highest capacity formats before spring 06 to coincide with their spring 06 release of ps3. it's been a while and we have a ps3 with less power than they said it would, fewer ports, fewer features, copycat innovation, and now apparently not even enough games for the poor saps that buy the systems to even be able to get the games.
if they only have 100k games at launch, and only 400k systems in the wild, does that mean that there's going to be 75% of ps3 owners with nothing to play on their 600 dollar wonderbox? - felyduw, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9@doubledoh
That's a huge generalisation. The political spectrum in Europe is extremely diversified not like the US in which you have two political parties: one center-right and the other right-leaning. Historically Europe has had more social awareness than the US but also you have Silvio Berlusconi in Italy, Wolfgang Schüssel in Austria and in the future you'll have Fredrik Reinfeldt in Sweden after a switch from left to right in the last elections. José Manuel Barroso, which is center-right, is the president of the European Comission. Besides there are still plenty of countries which are a Monarchy which is, generally speaking, right-leaning.
Don't speak about things you don't know about and just heard about. - cbiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Sir Stringer runs Sony and when he speaks to the press he has little to say of interest about PS3. He says stuff like - Oh yes, PS3 has all the bells and whistles, or, our designers threw everything in but the kitchen sink, and boy oh boy that cell chip is really something. For more of his blabber read the WSJ roundtable. Watching Stringer in action shows me how a co. can get so derailed from a core biz like PS3...
- BarriedaleNick, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13Just the usual FUD - no links to sources - no references. It may be true but there is no evidence that it is - just the usual pointless mindless anti sony blogging
- cbiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm worried that PS3 may be all sizzle and no steak? PS3 has gone from the most anticipated console "love fest" to a debate about the worthiness of this product. Starting with the cell processors superiority or parity, to the risks the new Blu-Ray be included in PS3, add the ghastly cost to manufacture and finally it's initial outrageous retail price. Those are the comments from fans and pundits alike, right? When buying a speculative stock let, "the trend be your friend". The trend is not a friend to the folks at Sony.
- cbiz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5P5ycHo - I hope PS3 is a fine machine - It still leaves us with important questions. Does the cell whoomp the guts of the MS product? I would be very happy to see a console exceed 360. I am also really worried about the Blu-Ray. I'm pc centric and I can tell you BR is getting a real bad rap in the pc universe and a luke warm reaction from the home theater crowd, they agree HD right now does a better job with how the movies look. I do know it's super early for both products to declare a winner but holding up PS3 for BR? And the list goes on and on....
- cbiz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Sony company has forgotten what consumers want. Sony can't even get a game console priced correctly.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Source for info that Sony can't make BluRay discs: sketchy at best.
Reported as inaccurate. - CMGNEWS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sony is launching because they have no choice. If they delay to 2007 when they will actually have a decent number of units and software available they will lose so much mindshare that it will be the end of the line. The hardcore Sony faithfull will deal with chasing around after the console but if they don't at least launch the unit in low numbers people will start defecting en masse. They are choosing the lesser of two evils because after ALL the bad press they are going to have even worse press this fall. The line will be all about how Sony pushed the system out the door after all the missteps.
Cause unfortunately the "missteps" and the posibility of Sony going to crap and droping from Hero to Zero has become "the" story.
They need to give the Sony fans HOPE. Thats all that is going on - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They still add and subtract feature almost daily. How can this be with a launch just weeks away?
- Aharoni, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If that is true then Sony forgot to consider the fact that many people who will go into the store and ask for a PS3, once told its not available and probably won't be for some time, will buy the available Xbox 360.
Microsoft claimed that their inability to keep up with demand on launch has been a catalyst for PS2 sales and they expect the same for the Xbox 360 once the PS3 will come out (they said so themselves in old interviews).
I think Sony are well aware of that (especially since their competitors blantly talks about it to the press). They know they'll be helping the Xbox 360's sales and marketshare with that strategy... oh wait, I forgot they "don't care about market share". :) - Satanael, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5In the narrow scope of the internet, Wii has won, but if you talk to people who aren't so in-tune with all the latest news and the internet discussions, they still believe PS3 will be amazing.
- Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5the thought of tons of sony fanboys pictochatting during a press conference is just ***** hilarious.
- psbpv3o, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I'm suppose to believe all this coming from some guys blog? You ps3 bashers are really scooping low to find bad information.
- BluParadox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I dont understand why people continue to insist there are so many "Sony Fanboys" when they are never anywhere to be seen. I mean - they've had horrible press for over a year now - not just because their marketing efforts and management sucks, but because everyone in the world seems to want wii to win.
- Aharoni, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@ BluParadox
Ofcourse PS fanboys are no where to be seen. Don't you remember the study that was done on Xbox and PS fanboys? PS fanboys have a low self-esteem. Its not that they don't exist... they're simply very very shy.
And god knows all the debacle about the PS3 in recent months must have shattered their self-esteem to a point where they don't want any human interaction, in real life or online. - jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I'm not surprised, the PS3 will take a beating and Sony won't be the monopoly it once was
which is a good thing - vdog, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5It's not just us that has a vendetta against MS, there's also the entire EU. Sony haven't made any friends since the whole root-kit debacle, and as for George W, well, the evidence speaks for itself.
- amba, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The only reason for the shortage of shipped games would be either the games aren't finished yet, or there won't be enough consoles to sell the games. Otherwise, there shouldn't be any problems with Bluray pressings.
- BarriedaleNick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This FUD crap was on the front page a while back. It was unmitigated bollocks then and nothing has changed. There are no new "facts" here - there's not even any new fabricated ***** - but as long as it's anti Sony it gets lapped up.
It's just a blog with no source...get over it.. - macbookpromat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Oh well I sure hope sony fails. I don't know why but ever since They launched the first PS, I didn't like their appraoch to games. Graphics vs Fun. Fun always wins, because graphics sure are fun but if your game is ***** then noone will buy it.
- thund3rstruck, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3"Here is my take: 80% of the xbox 360s bought durring its launch window were re-sold on ebay"
You know this is the problem with today's "connected" society. People make comments all day long with numbers and figures they pull right out of their ***** with no sources and no credibility and less informed individuals eat it up.
80%.... Are you retarded? Perhaps 10%, but 80%? What an idiotic statement. Now if you had said that 80% of people bought the "Death of Superman" Comic book back in the day simply because they thought it would increase in value, I could buy that but to say that 8 out of every 10 XBOX360s bought at launch were sold on Ebay is plain stupid. - au071, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4There still will be a quick sellout, but I think in the long run PS3 will not be as successful as PS2. It may still end up as the market leader, but XBOX360 will be pretty close by.
- Beaver6813, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6It seems that the digg community now have some sort of vendetta against Sony, Microsoft, Bush. Who else?
- biv2k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Haven't sony been making losses for a few year anyway (as a whole)? It's a little worrying, really.
I just hope they manage to produce a really good quality console to justify, as everything I've bought from sony has eventually fallen apart. - positron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Touchme
er...
Touché - Renton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Sony fanboys don't use the internet as much. They are usually playing basketball, in jail or at school.
And the ones that are here are complaining that "digg hates sony" - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1marked as Spam
why is a blog being used for what I have said 100's of times for the past year
die $ony - randal2k, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2 Sony, has always brought out 2nd rate crap, except when it came to the Playstation, which is really good (ps1, ps2 etc..) but the Numb but Idiots that thought up rootkits on CD's have infiltrated the PS camp, and the PS3 is like a very awesome game machine that is being dumbed down by DRM and proprietary programming.
This flows down to developers of games and causes issues with releases, Sony "F$%#ed the Dog" on this one.
Flame bait: PS3 will suck as bad if not worse then the X360 when it came out, we will here after it's release about over heating, bad control, unwatchable blue-ray etc... it's imminent. they have hyped it way to much and it will go down like a stone in a pond. - verstohlen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Bad karma for those damn rootkits.
- doubledoh, on 10/12/2007, -9/+8Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you Eurpopeans vote for politicians that tax the hell out of businesses and individuals, thus driving the costs of production up?
Is it really any wonder why most goods are more expensive in Europe?
Want lower prices? Stop voting for socialists. - P5ycHo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Well, that says it all.
All these Wiitarded Sony bashers think they rule the world by digging stories & blogs. They really think they share the same opinion as the rest of the world (as in non diggers).
Just let 'm. You can't do ***** about it. Even when they have to admit the PS3 is a fine machine, they'll stick to the thing they do best: throwing sticks & stones. - kayjay, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1i just wait for the ps3 to come out and then i decide if the ps3 is good or not. how it compares to the Wii. what games are better. etc.
the ONLY thing that makes me angry is that europeans get shafted, once again...! -> ps3 comes out 4 months later, it will be 20% more expensive than the US ps3 and 40% more expensive than the JAP ps3!
sony -hopefully- lowers the price of the 20GB ps3 in europe as well! - ReCkLeSsX, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Wow, digg sure hates the PS3.
All you guys are doing is just digging up the same stories every day... - lazejanis, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3This just in:
* The XBox 360 is going to set itself on fire (anonymous developer stated)
* The Nintendo Wii is going to turn your kids into stupid waving their arms morons (a unofficial spoke person of Nintendo stated).
I can't see why people are so passionate about company's like Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo - let the customers decide which will win - why would the regular Joe post incorrect stuff just to make his favorite company look better. - positron, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2deleted
- Microdot, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2hilarious. everyone that bashes sony gets digged... those that call this story for what it is (lame as hell) get canned.
unless you have a HUGE investment in sony... what the hell do you care? the ps3 will sell out on the initial run, and continue to be the most popular on the planet for the next 5 years or more. they may lose market share, but again, this shouldnt affect you personally. -
