- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -11/+68Dear Sony,
You are idiots
That is all. - iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+55It's like Dave Barry said; marketing will tell you the exact opposite of what they really think about the product.
"This isn't your father's oldsmobile" = only old people by our cars
"Doritoes with a cheesier nacho taste" = they taste like the same god damn chips we've been selling for years
"Our system is the best value for the money" = who in their right mind would pay this much for a video game system unless the controller administered blow jobs during load times?
and when a company has to resort to insulting their competition, that really just means they're honestly afraid that their opponents have a superior deal. - zengonzo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+50
Blowjobs during load times! Why didn't I think of that?!
And then we'd actually be clamoring for longer load times. - JBCougar, on 10/12/2007, -6/+44The PS3 is a "bit irrelevant."
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -0/+32you think you've got it bad? try moving to the UK.
or should that be UPay (see what I did there... I'm here all week) - raptordrew, on 10/12/2007, -4/+36Sony for the lose!
- shuffle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35Pot. Kettle. Black.
- RetroRufio, on 10/12/2007, -4/+30You do realize that Australians are paid in Australian dollars right? It's not like they're paying MORE, they're paying with a different currency that has a different exchange rate.
- HanSolo69, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27Sony needs to start being more careful on who they let speak in public. This isn't the first, or even second, quote from Sony. When the PS3 price was initially released Sony said "it's probably too cheap."
- amba, on 10/12/2007, -5/+29I'm sure the fanbys will say otherwise, but the original article has very little about the PS3- looks like the execs are as much in the dark about the system as the public.
No, it's all about the PS2, and if you look at it that way, it WILL be the cheapest console available in Australia (and Europe, too) this Christmas.
Now watch them explain in March why we must suddenly accept 'pricey' consoles. :) - bastionwords, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21Actually, it's cheaper in Japan than anywhere else.
- PYREX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21this just in, sony says the PS3 cures cancer.
- ronin9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17"who in their right mind would pay this much for a video game system unless the controller administered blow jobs during load times?"
Heh, administering blow jobs during "load" times. - Jaymo89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Australian prices include tax, American prices do not.
i.e. when you buy a Wii at the store, it is advertised at $400 and you buy it for $400, full stop.
In the United States you see the Wii advertised for $250US, you end up buying it for $280US because tax is factored in after the RRP. - Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17yeah, the PS3 should be $800 USD so poeple KNOW they are buying a high quality sony producty, especially since wii and 360 are so overpriced
- dWhisper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Huh. I think we have finally found a new quote to abuse and mis-use in place of "640k memory is all you'll ever need" or "I invented the Internet." Very nice.
This one can't even go under "pot calling kettle black," as it's closer to pointing fingers at the guy jaywalking when you're mugging an old lady. While the article points at the international pricing, the problem is more one of omission, as it didn't talk about the PS3. You can call the Wii and Xbox 360 pricey, but comparing it to a last generation console is just apples and oranges.
A brand new Core 2 Duo system is really pricey too, especially when I could just buy an old Pentium 4 and save a few hundred bucks. Comparing something that's 5 years old to something that's 11 months (or -1 months) just seems like marketing fluff or spin. - Konrad9, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Hey, Sony.
You don't hear Porsche saying that the Honda Civic is too expensive.
Why, Sony, must you bleed stupid so obviously that it makes me wonder how you got this far? - shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -9/+22400 Australian dollars = 297.36 U.S. dollars
it's a bitch living outside the U.S. - millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Sony on the 360/Wii: "A bit pricey."
Sony on the PS3: "Probably a bit too cheap."
Wow! What crazy, backwards mixed-up reality do they live in where $250 is "a bit pricey" and $600 is "a bit too cheap" eh?!? - lsdeath, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I guess they use the same PR firm as the republican party.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13No sales tax in oregon.
Hurrah! - truspector, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13They won't need to, remember the PS3 is a killer PC
/sarcasm - Dietrich, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18***** Sony. ***** them long, hard, and with an iron stick.
- chgu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Sony just has this inherent belief that they are the end-all of gaming. It's fine to believe you're the best, but please, have some humility.
- sleepwalkers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12The reason a lot of people don't want to pay $600 for the PS3 is that not everyone has an HDTV (and therefore can't use BluRay), or simply don't want to choose a format in the HD movie format war... I don't have an HDTV, but even if I did, I would rather have the PS3 be $400 and no BluRay support, as I'm not about to choose a format and start buying movies for it until I'm guaranteed the format will be around for a while.
- FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Actually, they've already said that, old news. If we believe everything Sony says, PS2/PS3's can be used for anything from missile guidance systems to supercomputers.
- motang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Of course Sony isn't going to admit that their system (console) is expensive, now would they? Yet again another exec that is out of the loop.
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Oh my goodness.
Yup, $650 (You can get a 360 Premium for just under $600 EASY now) for a 360 is way pricey, as opposed to what $1000 for JUST a PS3 ?
That's right, all stores are advertising the PS3 for $1000 and that's with no games, extra controllers, NOTHING.
$650 was pretty freaking high when I got my 360 and there is no way in hell I'm forking out $1000+ for a PS3.
Is it a requirement to be crazy, ignorant and arrogant to be a Sony executive ?
Prices are so ridiculous in Australia, sigh.. at least we have kangaroos, right ? :( - cmhanck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Interesting comments considering that Sony is about to redefine the ceiling for console prices... When diehard PS fanboys are talking about picking up a 360, things are clearly not good for Sony. It's fun watching a company implode.
- phearinc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I'm glad I can count on the good folks at Sony to give me unbiased opinions on their competitors. Finally, someone stands up for me: the consumer.
- duniyadnd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Actually.. all prices listed in the US is before taxes.
- Konrad9, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12A red hot iron stick. With prongs.
- daridave, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10It's true -- Wii is pricey... but it's because of the controller, which is understandable. SONY's console, on the other hand has the word "OVERKILL" written all over it, on every aspect possible, so... they could have done something about it.
I think SONY should just STFU and stick with comments like Kutaragi's "we don't care" -- do your thing, stop the damage control and keep pretending your way is the right way... until you fail and die. - Konrad9, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9How much does the PS3 controller that supports rumble cost?
- Lane5slacker, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13Is Sony ever going to wake up?!
- nebunezzar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I agree w/ sleepwalkers. I'm not taking any sides in this format war until there's a definite winner. Otherwise that extra money spent on a PS3 "for the bluray" could end up being a waste. Then you're just left with a plain old console that's more expensive than the competition.
- Wootery, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"Imagine the homebrew, it will be incredible.", assuming that Sony lets Linux use all the cores. And remember that developing for a weird multi-core system like the PS3 is going to be a challenge for homebrew developers.
Homebrew to me isn't something to look forward to. - chkltcow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I don't use WiFi because I still have a wired network. I don't use HDMI cables because I don't yet have a HDTV (I play on a computer monitor with the VGA adapter). I don't need Blu-Ray because... well... it's still likely to tank.
To me it seems that Sony is using the PS3 as a marketing tool for Blu-Ray, not the other way around. They're putting this drive in the machine to say "Look, you can play these fantastic HD movies now!" and trying to get the machine into homes. Stop looking at Blu-Ray as a selling point for the PS3, and start looking at the PS3 as a selling point for Blu-Ray. - BamB00, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Let me put it this way, the way how Sony sell their PS3 is like putting 7 controllers into the package. PS3 tell you that you got a great discount price for buying 7 of them at once, compared to buying 7 separately. But heck, I rarely use 4 and let's alone 7! What I'm saying is, unless you going to use all if not most of its features (meaning get a HD-TV, HDMI cable, setup wifi, buy a few BR movies...etc) it is not worth its $600 price tag.
Second, I believe only one format will survive, so it is either HD-DVD, BR or ( hybrid of HD-DVD+BR), so if you got a PS3 and BR failed, that mean $600+another $500 to play HD movie. For X360, since the HD-DVD is optional you can save that $200 for BR if it wins. For wii, save $350 for now, and wait for the final winner.
To sum it up:
PS3: $600 maximum damage if BR-failed (get a X360 for $399+$200 HD-DVD add-on)
X360: $200-$600 maximum damage if HD-DVD failed (buy a BR-add-on or get the $500/600 PS3) - Aharoni, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8What Sony did is go for a pricing policy that the entire system is cheaper than the sum of its parts. With the HD, with the Blu-Ray, with the Wifi adapter and of course the system itself, the PS3 should have cost a lot more. Sony believe people will be able to see that you are getting a pretty good return for your money. Your return-for-money is actually better than an Xbox 360. However, what they didn't take into consideration is that some of its parts (namely Blu-Ray) isn't something that most gamers want, and the percieved value for it is really low compared to what it costs.
Its a gamble. If the HD-players wars heat up and Blu-Ray will catch on, Sony will defenitely earn quite a lot from it. If it isn't, its going to hurt them badly.
For now, it isn't worth it. I don't want even to imagine how much it will cost here, where a playstation 2 costs about $470.... - bigteebo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Did the former iraqi minister of information move over to working for Sony now? Oh what whimsical things the Sony PR machine say next? "My dad can beat up your dad."
- stappawho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6They get a hell of a lot of attention for being irrelevent.
- Zuggy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Even if you take into account that it's blue-ray player, it's still not that good of a deal until the blue-ray hd-dvd issue is worked out. My recomendation, don't buy a PS3 until the porn gods say which format they are going with. Can't go wrong trusting the largest non-interactive entertainment industry for what video format to go with.
Note porn is the 2nd largest entertainment industry next to video games, and is the largest non-interactive industry, unless you want to argue that jerking off is interactive. - markgl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5only way to drive prices down is to not buy the new systems. that sucks cause everyone wants the new and best, but we have the power to change the companies prices by not buying their seriously over priced systems. You might as well by a computer for the prices systems are becoming. Atleast with a computer you can play games, check email and balance your check book with it too!
- nebunezzar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah, I'd gladly pay the difference for the kangaroos. Oh well :P
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5For those stating Xbox 360 is higher priced, remember those are all add-ons. Some people don't want the wi-fi adapter, or the hd-dvd player. That's why the cost is appealing to consumers, where the PS3 has it all and will cost more, which is less appealing to consumers.
Having said that, I'm sure there will be Xbox 360 price drops, and really it would be the ultimate high end game console if the HD-DVD addon was cheaper. I'm not going to get into the PS3 vs. 360 vs. Wii war. Choose the console(s) you think are best and play. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The Wii is pricey because they sunk a ton of money in over coming the huge hurdle of having motion sensing and rumble in one the controller.
-End of Sarcasm- - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5for the 1000+ i'd spend on a PS3, I'd rather invest in a quad SLI graphics card sys....
