PS3 = Repulsive - ytsohptwhere, on 10/12/2007, -25/+253PS3 Nothing more than having too much money.
- UnglueD, on 10/12/2007, -11/+191Most people who don't have a Wii, would love to be ABLE to buy one on an impulse.. problem is you can't just go to walmart and buy one.. like you could a PS3
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -6/+154If I was gonna buy a video game console, I'd rather it be an impulse.... than a trip to the bank for a loan.
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -18/+136PS3 is nothing more than an impulse NOT to buy.
- mickhead, on 10/12/2007, -6/+96Impulse buy or not, its still the best thing to happen to gaming in a long time.
- Mudhoney, on 10/12/2007, -6/+83Sony did the exact same BS when PSP and DS came out. Some of these quotes sound really similar, and we all know who is winning in PSP vs DS. (I own and love both, by the way.)
DS vs PSP Phil Harrison quotes:
'The idea of a handheld rivalry with Nintendo is an irrelevance,' claimed Harrison. 'Those formats don’t appear in our planning. It’s not a fair comparison; not fair on them, I should stress. That sounds arrogant, maybe, but it’s the truth.'
'It’s fair to say that Nintendo stepped out of the technical race and went for a feature differentiation with the touch screen. But I fear that it won’t have a lasting impact beyond that of a gimmick - so the long-lasting appeal of the platform is at peril as a direct result of that.'
'Nintendo knows its target audience, because it has really narrowed that down,' continued Harrison. 'It’s pretty much defined by a boy or girl’s ability to admire Pokémon.

Impulse items do not cost more than $250, period. I would argue that true impulse items don't cost more than $6-8, and even that's pushing the high end.
Very, very, very few people can walk into a store, drop $250+ that they never intended on spending in the first place, and never think twice about it. - c6mjohn, on 10/12/2007, -5/+64Ask the people that have been waiting in lines all over the country for the CHANCE to buy a Wii. They will tell you they didn't wake up that early on a Sunday on an "impulse."
- nboothe, on 10/12/2007, -4/+52Sony's taking shots 'cause they got their butt's whipped this holiday season.
- Baku, on 10/12/2007, -2/+50The Wii is an impulse buy.... yet Sony copied the idea for a movement-sensitive controller? Ppppfffft
The PS3 is nothing more than an overpriced system that will never be utilised to its full potential (Sony execs have said that themselves). - dunezone, on 10/12/2007, -5/+49The Wii is a step in a new direction as the PS3 is a step in the same direction.
- echonull, on 10/12/2007, -8/+52I'd guess the "impulse buy" comment is meant to imply that the PS3 should be viewed as an investment in future technology. The Wii is just "fun", not something you "need to get a second job to play".
... you can't make bashing like this up, folks. Sony just hands is the loaded guns, and turns its back. - oscarwp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38An impulse buy that sells over three million in the first couple months is a video game companies dream. Huge compliment. Video game systems should be an impulse buy, that means a person wants it so bad they can't not buy it.
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29Looks like Sony's Xerox machine is broken then, since the SIXAXIS has about one third of the Wiimote's features.
- johngardiner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26Agreed with Oscar.... if a video game system is an impulse buy, then theyre going to sell a lot more of them... look at the DS for example.. An impulse buy video game system means that it is reasonably priced, and people want that product... the ps3 is definetly not an impulse buy.

We will never forget the rootkits. - daridave, on 10/12/2007, -6/+30@SqueakyWheel
Wii people have too much money ?
GOOD!!! ...because they actually have some games to spend it on.
SONY can ***** talk all they want, they've done it for years now... seriously -- how can they call the Wii a gimmick when they're actually thinking about Cell-based cellphones?
A cell-powered Ericsson, THAT'S what the world needs !!! - wiirdo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24I love my Wii! I'm not a gamer at all -- my last game console was the Atari 2600. No kidding!
At $250, it was an absolutely great purchase. I don't care about HD graphics, I just want something fun and for the entire family. My kids (4yo, 6yo) don't have to learn a lot of complicate sequence of button presses when playing games.
Mine wasn't an impulse, it was a planned buy.
Sony is jealous. - Mudhoney, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27@AntBing
I don't understand people like you that seemed to have just gotten a Wii for Zelda, a GAMECUBE game... Complaining about a lack of games right now isn't a stretch, but when you narrow yourself to just one title out of the several quality titles out for Wii already, you're setting yourself up for disappointment. - ThePikey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21I had the money for a PS3. I had one in my hand as they put them on the shelf. A voice in my head said, "Are you mental?" I responded with a "yes" since talking to myself would have been considered as such. The guy next to me smiled with an agreeing yes, but he was actually excited he got a PS3. The fool.
I turned around to look at the 360 display. The price was $399. Around the corner was the Wii $250. For a little more than the PS3 with games and controllers etc. I could get both. I looked at the desperate mother next to me, scanning for just one more PS3. I offered it to her and said, "Merry Christmas." I felt like the Grinch, knowing I was handing her a big $700 turd.
My timing was perfect that day, I passed a big Sony turd and bought a Wii and a 360. I'm not saying this to boast, I'm just restating what's been said before. For the price of a PS3, you can have the interaction and innovative game play of the Wii AND the next gen graphic goodness, Media Center interoperability and ass-kicking online interaction of the 360.
I'm sorry Sony, you loose on all fronts. - Phendrana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18If you try to ***** on the person higher than you, it just falls back down.
I don't know if that's a real saying, but it should be starting now. - itsHef, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Sony, you've already lost this cycle.
- furdine, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Sony's real issue is that the PS3 is NOT an impulse buy... and it's not a "buy" at all.
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Even if you don't buy on impulse and you spend some time researching your buy, you'll still buy the Wii or the DS over the PS3 or PSP. They're just better products.
- Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16No, a company doesn't have to put down another company to market or campaign their product. In fact, historically speaking, I hate companies that do that and they seldom ever succeed. Companies like Sega, Apple, and now Sony all have put down other companies in order to promote their products. Sega put down Nintendo. Apple puts down Windows and the PC. Sony puts down Nintendo. Apple might have success with iPod, but I feel their constant "we're better then the PC your using" attitude keeps them with 5% market share. If your tying to convince someone to buy your product, its never a good idea to tell them what they are using is crap and was a mistake. Its part of the customer is always right attitude. If the customer buys a Wii, they are right. As a company you need to find out why they prefer the Wii and market your PS3 to entice people away from them. Trying to convince those people to buy a PS3 by bragging about how bad the Wii is is just going to turn them away, from the PS3.
In the mean time, I have never seen an advertising campaign by Nintendo or even Microsoft that says "We are better then what your using".
When a company actually names their competitor with disparaging comments and advertising, its a sure sign that the company is insecure and sees themselves as the underdog. Unfortunatly, its also a sign of corporate ignorance to bad mouth the competition. Sony diss'ing the Wii means more marketing and consumer support for Nintendo, and more people hating Sony for their arrogant attitude.
Golden rule of advertising is to convince people that they are the ones that want a product so bad they can taste it. Its not to leave a bad taste in their mouths.. - DeepDoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Just so you know, I have a real job that pays real well.
Just because you have money does not mean you spend it foolishly.
$750 for a one game two controller console is foolish by any standards. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17A Wii is an impulse buy huh. Then why is it a lot of PS3 owners have buyers remorse and Wii owners don't?
Oh yeah, its 3x the ***** cost with barely any games. - stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Maybe you have some extra money, but with your personality I'd be surprised if anyone likes you. I truly pity you.
- edrift101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16See what Nintendo did here... They created a perfect console for everyone from the hard-core gamers to little kids and marketed it at a perfect price point. Sony still has a lot to learn about this market.
- Daveecee, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19"...suggesting PS3 and Wii shouldn't be considered in the same category."
Agreed. One sells more than the other. Easily categorizable. - keyrat, on 10/12/2007, -8/+23Sony needs to stop talking so much *****. I mean, wtf. You've barely sold the amount of consoles needed to stay afloat, yet you're ***** on the console who's selling the most. Retarded.
Also, Digg needs to stop promoting such garbage news in the gaming section. The gaming section reads like a bad tabloid.
Finally, the Wii is definitely an impulse buy for a lot of people. There's no need to deny it. Most of the people I know who bought a Wii don't know or care about any other games coming out. They all bought it to play Wii Sports. Also, any real gamer with a DS will tell you the best games don't require a stylus, but rather play the conventional way (Castlevania w00t).
An impulse buy of a good product doesn't mean the product is suddenly bad. - adamcurtis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Sony really needs to pull their head out of their a$$ here and take a look at the overall picture. People are buying the Wii because it's fun and won't break the bank to buy it. Maybe when they see the majority of households own a Wii while only a handful own the PS3, Sony will stop underestimating the Wii and realize what a competitor it actually is.
- Wildthing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14All those Snickers and M&Ms at the super market checkout are impulse buys too, and I'm willing to bet that Mars (the company that makes those candies) makes more than the company that makes Dom Perignon champagne
- aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14“The PS3 will instill discipline in our children and adults alike. Everyone will know discipline.” “for consumers to think to themselves ‘I will work more hours to buy one’. We want people to feel that they want it, irrespective of anything else.”
See, the Wii is nothing more than an impulse buy, because you can afford it without truly knowing discipline and the way of the Samurai, The Playstation3 is a life lesson, a lesson in hardships and dedication, in the face of the mighty foes, Logic and Reason. - smackwell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Impulse buy my ass. Waiting in line for hours to buy a Wii each time more become available is hardly impulsive. You have a good 8 hours before that dumb-assed Wal-Mart opens to think about that impulse. Shut up Sony. That's the most backwards-assed comment I've ever seen.
- mavranos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14I've got money to buy all four PS3s sitting stagnant in my local Target's case. But I will keep my money until the PS3 starts delivering on some promises.
Keep rubbing those hundreds on your ass- maybe a genie will pop out of your doody-hole and grant your wishes for clear skin and the willpower to stop masturbating to pictures of Ken Kutaragi. - Coffeedemon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13You can't buy charisma... obviously
- thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Probably because you don't need to take out a loan to get a wii....
- jpb0104, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13My DS Lite was a pure impulse buy just for Tetris/Mario. And I still play the hell out of it and still buy games.
- MackDiesel2010, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12it's a sign of desperation
- mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Just keep your PS2. You dont need the extra processor to play your old games.
- NeCtUr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13they lost this cycle before they even hit the shelves.
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I'm sure all those Wii-fans who have waited overnight for one would disagree with that assessment...:p
- AK10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10The number of diggs say otherwise.
- mcraigw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Comparing the PS3 to Dom Perignon isn't quite right though... A Yugo would have been a better choice.
- Tenlow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11It's an impulse buy because you can afford it if you want one. With the ps3 you damn near have to set up long term financing to buy one.
- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I REALLY hope Sony execs read this thread of comments....just to see first-hand how foolish they look when they use the "drunk frat dude" PR approach.
- MindTrigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Yeah, you know...because we care so much about what you have to say, that we will track down your comments on another story. bwahahhaha!
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11"The Wii won't play my dozens of PS1 & PS2 games. The PS3 will."
The PS3 won't play my dosens of GC games, the Wii will.
The PS3 won't play my dosens of Xbox games, the Xbox360 will.
The Wii won't play my dosens of Xbox games, the Xbox360 will.
The Xbox360 won't play my dosens of GC games, the Wii will.
World of Warcraft is not successful.
Jack Thompson should be president.
See? I can make completely crazy statements too.
I don't know about you but I don't think anyone is surprised or angry that a console is not able to play games from it's competetors, I really don't see the point in stating that a Wii cannot play PS1 or PS2 games. And if you have dozens of PS2 games then its highly likely you have a PS2 as well, so why not just use that to play PS1 and PS2 games? -
