- Orion682, on 10/11/2007, -2/+57For a second I misread the title and thought they were letting the homebrew community unfettered access to the firmware. Yeah... I'm tired :/
And kinda disappointed now :( - PuyoDead, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20Correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't most homebrew been able to use the full 333Mhz speed for a long time? Not only that, but I thought some of the newer firmware hacks enabled full CPU speed overall.
- damnyooneek, on 10/11/2007, -1/+193.50 OE is coming soon my children
- mageofdeath, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19well, here's to dark alex giving is a full cpu firmware hack!
- crummy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17I'm glad this is just a firmware update - at first I thought new PSPs would run faster, meaning newer games wouldn't run as well on old systems.
I wonder how much the battery power will be affected? - jsully, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14I have a modded PSP - trust me when I say this is great news. I run it at 333 when I play GTA - it completely eliminates slowdown, and typically I only see 20 or so minutes fewer playtime on a single charge.
- bigfkncee, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14all i want to hear is there is a downgrader for 3.30
- Maynza, on 10/11/2007, -8/+16The psp is an amazing device that is miles better than the ds, but only if you hack it, and i think sony should promote that use because without hacking the psp is so boring.
- pktgumby, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9You must be so proud of yourself. I don't see any other logical explanation for this useless post.
- Kylem87, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I guess this will be needed for GRAW2 on the PSP.

- cloudyprison, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5 I would imagine it was due to battery life and heating issues.
- Sutanreyu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Awesome.
The reason as to why Sony didn't have it running at full speed has been speculated to be battery life... In order to show people that battery life wouldn't be an issue, they "locked" the PSP's CPU down in order to improve battery life. Once they've solved those problems, they would unlock it, as shown in that article. Though, I think that the reason why they're unlocking it is to prep for the PSP revision. Improved battery life is something they're touting for it, so why not give developers the power to make their games look, (or play), even better? That way, when the "PSP Slim" releases, it won't only look good aesthetically, it'll seem like a whole new system. Of course, you have to give the older PSP models the same internal treatment.
Can't wait until games take full avantage of this, (God of War, maybe?). - xike, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7Same here. I was about to regret selling my PSP.
- Snoz, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7Homebrews on any firmware version :)
- distrbnce, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4amen. I got a new memory stick and was already to hack my psp again (did it back in the 2's). Went and got the unpatched GTA, got home, and realized I had 3.30 instead of 3.03 :( sad story end.
- Kylem87, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4It did a while ago, but these bugs were ironed out.
- MWeather, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Even without hacking you can stream media from your PS3. That alone is worth the cost. The cost of the PS3 on the other hand...
- sark666, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Probably so, but what's changed?
- distrbnce, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4You're right, and I think you just said the same sentence two different ways.
- sirmasterboy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4The last few versions of dark alex custom firmware and devhook starting about 6 months ago have allowed full 333mhz for UMDs, ISOs and the psp menu. Also since the dawn of homebrew on the 1.5, there has been the option of running 333mhz. Though it is really nice that they will make games with even nicer graphics to push the system farther. Games like GTA and Socom2 already lag at 222 but run fine at 333. Now we will just have new games that lag at 333.
- daridave, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Indeed, this can't be good for the battery. They probably locked it for that exact reason in the first place...
- DTJunkie07, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4I fell so sorry for you guys. When the 3.03 downgrader came out I had that exact firmware and went out and bought the unpatched GTA. Playing all those sweet roms and playstation games at almost full speed is a blast. You can also customize the XMB, and of course unlock the full 333mhz. My XMB like the PS3 it's gorgeous : http://evolvexmb.com/Main/modules/wordpress/?p=86#comments
- Zoids, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Dude, upgrade your CF already, the wireless has been working at 333mhz for a while now.
- pktgumby, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yeah, it says so in the article.
- Philbert, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2When I first heard about the throttling some time ago my thought was that they planned to use that to increase the longevity of the system. Release games that look good now, then when sales start to drop off unleash the full potential and games that look even better start popping up.
- dawurz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I was wondering the same thing. With all the horsepower the PSP has and its sales way behind the DSs, why not unleash the power of community sooner instead of later? Imagine if Sony did something similar for the PSP as Microsoft is doing with their "Creators Club" for the X360.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yes. With a hack -- a hack that I'm sure Sony would not be too pleased if game developers had been using.
- distrbnce, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Where have you been?
- TheTjalian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yeah but the SDKs have been so poor compared to the official ones that there's been no real point...
- themastersb, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I say custom firmware FTW
- Dgen_X, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1mainly because battery life isn't all that great as it is....and I'm sure with the original PSP, with the original battery, there will be a decrease in battery life.
But of course the new PSP will probably clear that up, and possibly increase the battery life while running at 333mhz
just my thoughts - Ignathius, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"In order to show people that battery life wouldn't be an issue, they "locked" the PSP's CPU down in order to improve battery life. Once they've solved those problems, they would unlock it, as shown in that article."
exactly how did they magically improve the battery life of older PSPs that are still getting their CPUs speed unlocked? - Ignathius, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1it's not an upgrade. it's an "oh by the way, we've been blocking some of the CPU's speed this whole time. here's a patch that'll let the CPU run at full speed. enjoy your free upgrade! (snicker)"
- geoffreyireland, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Custom firmware has used it for ages. Eats up the battery though.
- MedHead, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Just making sure it's said: I have a non-hacked, Sony-firmware PSP, and I find it rather entertaining. There are plenty of games left on my "shopping list".
- smackhero, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Sony has proven themselves to be unscrupulously greedy. they don't respect the intelligence of the consumers and insult us by continually screwing us over for "higher" profits, but it just hurts their sales in the end.
i got a PSP for my birthday and i actually really like it. but the fact that you need to buy a PS3 to use many of its features such as streaming videos/music or play PS1 games that they offer for download is really insulting. there's no reason why they couldn't just let users stream media off their computer, or let you access the playstation store with the PSP directly--it's already got a browser and wifi capabilities.
because of this i have to turn to homebrew, and if they continue to alienate users like this, then they can expect to see their sales continue to drop across the board. even the price they're charging for the PS3 and its games are an insult. i really don't understand why they're letting the company be run into the grown by greedy and incompetent leadership. it's just letting all that technological innovation go to waste. - TheTjalian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Actually it IS news. It's a major PSP upgrade. It means developers can create even more graphically intensive games now.
It also means it sets the specs higher then the PS2. - inactive, on 02/25/2009, -0/+1Yes, without further doubt it can be said that if a particular game, for example Ratchet And Clank, runs on the unlocked CPU, the battery's power capacity would be drastically affected, unless and until Sony or another manufacturer comes up with a revolutionary way to create another type of Lithium-ion battery which would hold more power than the current ones. Already there are high-capacity lithium-ion batteries for PSP available in the market. In case you didn't notice, PSP's default battery is a 1800 mAH and there is another 3800 mAH battery available that, when combined with your 1800 mAH, can provide the psp with the combined power of 1800+3800 mAH = 5600 mAH, which does dramatically extend your gaming sessions three times longer. With Sony still trying to push themselves to the limit and bringing us innovations and new technology one by one, I wouldn't be surprised if sooner or later they invent a 5600 mAH battery and include it with the upcoming re-designed slim PSP.
- pktgumby, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4Yes, which is what the article said.
- inactive, on 02/25/2009, -0/+1i had a D-ass for a day, bought on opening day and then shoved it up a Wii fanboy's buttock
- inactive, on 02/25/2009, -1/+2Hi, there is nothing wrong with admitting your inability to afford a PSP but um by the way wake me up when you can play games like Transformers, Afterburner, Guitaroo Man and Rachet And Clark with PS2 quality graphics and play full movies, dvd-movie backups and mp3 files on DS. Until and unless you wake me up when DS includes these features, I will bitch-slap any and every DS/Wii old gay girlie Paper Piss Mario fanboy who comes in my way. Oh one more thing, please tell your fathers at Nintendo to stretch the DS's sceen size too.
- rderveloy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It would be nice if they came out with an optional speed step setting like they did for mobile Intel processors a few years ago. If you had the speed step setting enabled, it would slow down the clock on the processor while you were on battery power. If you had the laptop plugged in, the speed would jump up to full throttle.
- inactive, on 02/25/2009, -0/+1You are not wrong. This is old news to those who are running custom firmwire on their psps.
- modtho, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1I think that the reason why they're unlocking it is to prep for the PSP revision. http://www.scribd.com/people/view/3269498 - Ignathius, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1exactly. Nintendo realized people want gaming devices to have fun with, not be an overpriced media device or an over hyped portable media device.
- distrbnce, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Sony upgraded everyone's PSP for free. How is that not news?
- Philbert, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'll agree with the amazing device part. I used homebrew stuff for a few months with my PSP, then it just got boring. Not to put down the developers, but there just wasn't anything interesting being made.
