- Pinkertinkle, on 02/15/2009, -3/+28The Metreon was cool for about 3 weeks when it opened ~10 years ago.
- cog77, on 02/15/2009, -6/+29I work (and am sitting) about 300 ft away from this store.
I've only been there once and paid $45 for a cheap pair of ear-bud headphones.
I wonder why they are going out of business? - lilhelper, on 02/15/2009, -2/+22No!!!!
I love this place!!!!
The metreon is the place to be at for Bay Areans.... - Innuendo24, on 02/15/2009, -1/+21I dunno, if stupid people are paying too much for ***** equipment like you all day you think they would be solvent.
- motivatedguy, on 02/15/2009, -7/+26Flame war in 3....2.....1......
- HappyScrappy, on 02/15/2009, -2/+14Metreon is a ghost town. Paying to rent square footage in that place is throwing money away. This is a good move.
BTW, the Microsoft store in Metreon was never owned by MS, but MS did endorse it (clearly since their name was on it) and it was wise to close that one too. - GT35R, on 02/15/2009, -0/+9omg, ***** this recession already. cant wait till its over.

- inactive, on 02/15/2009, -0/+7Not sure this is a great sign, but I'm also not sold on store closing = Sony being "doomed". In point of fact, doomed companies (see Sega, Atari et al) often have a way of (sometimes repeatedly) rising from the ashes like electronic Phoenixes, but Sony with its billions of dollars in assets and and 50 plus year established brand recognition certainly isn't done and isn't even *close* to being in the position that the once great companies of our beloved pastime were. I'm just chalking this up to an unfortunate sign of the times in a down economy, nothing more.
- Zulithe, on 02/15/2009, -0/+6i think it's pretty sad. I live in SF and it was the only cool thing left inside the Metreon other than the IMAX. So the Metreon is doing this huuuuuuge renovation right now and there are no decent shops inside... I really hope it doesn't just close down completely.
- jacksyi, on 02/15/2009, -1/+7The only thing the Metreon is good for is the IMAX theater, and that's $15.
- Autrix, on 02/15/2009, -2/+7I was a regular customer at the comic book shop in the Metreon until they were forced out of their lease so the mall can undergo a 2 year renovation. I wouldn't be surprised if this is what happened to the PS store also.
- WorldGroove, on 02/15/2009, -1/+5That building was my spot for any great movie I wanted to see on opening-weekend.
And it holds memories for the original DDR players of the BayArea as well.
RIP Metreon. - gamben0, on 02/15/2009, -6/+9Can't really run a business when no one buys your product..
- inactive, on 02/15/2009, -1/+4I went to Sony's Ginza Tokyo display. IT WAS BORING! waste of time. Best to visit a Best Buy or any other major retail store.
- inactive, on 02/15/2009, -6/+9Am I the only one who "doesn't get" these product stores? Like the Apple store for example, i've seen a mac before, I know what they do, why would I want to go loiter inside a store looking at stuff I can't have?
Likewise for the Sony store, I know what a PS3 plays like, and what does it offer that a standard kiosk as Best Buy doesn't. - hmunkey, on 02/15/2009, -2/+5Not being a fanboy or anything, but I'm pretty sure a technology store would've changed in the last decade.
- ganymede2010, on 02/15/2009, -2/+5This sucks. A big loss for those of us in the Bay Area.
- HyphySoul, on 02/15/2009, -0/+3I always like to stop by there every time I go to SF, gonna miss that place.
- WhereAmI, on 02/15/2009, -2/+5I don't know, what would the owners of Wii60.com do now? You should be asking Wii/360 fanboys and not Playstation fanboys.
(if you don't know what I'm talking about, http://kotaku.com/gaming/web-of-deceit/sony-defens ... ) - judgeFire, on 02/15/2009, -1/+4Here's a story on its beginnings: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2 ...
- vkramac, on 02/16/2009, -0/+2asherp is wrong about the way they treat their customers. When I bought my PS3 they were very helpful. They quickly explained all of the SKUs and let me know that even though the 60 gig had long been unavailable I could still get backwards compatibility with the Metal Gear bundle. As I bought the system specifically for Metal Gear and Uncharted, I left pretty happy. Since then I've bought many games there, as it is games store on my way home from work. Since I'm not just some tosser there to waste time, they seem to value me as a customer and actually talk to me. I came in there with a copy of Final Crisis 7, and a guy actually talked to me about comic books for a few minutes before actually asking me if I needed anything. They let me play the first two chapters of Killzone 2 (not on a demo station). They've had awesome events, like a midnight launch for R2 (which isn't exactly the greatest game) with Ted Price and the dudes from Insomniac. Most of the time I buy multiplatform games for the 360, but going to the Playstation store got me to buck that tendancy. I fear my PS3 will gather dust like the Wii after I am done with Killzone 2.
- samard2002, on 02/15/2009, -6/+8I imagine you repeating this over and over to yourself with your eyes squeezed shut and your fists clenched.
- zonk3r, on 02/15/2009, -1/+3Huh. Guess you didn't have to buy those headphones did you?
- cyrix, on 02/15/2009, -2/+4STFU. Let's fight.
- Greengoo, on 02/15/2009, -2/+4I'd buy one.
- ChinezePanda, on 02/15/2009, -1/+3as I grip my 360 controller in one hand and a ps3 controller in the other...
- KingGorilla, on 02/15/2009, -3/+5What are you talking about? That place was never successful.
- timusca, on 02/15/2009, -2/+4It's one store... who cares? I realize it was the ONLY store, but this doesn't effect many people in the grand scheme of things.
- mooseysavage, on 02/15/2009, -2/+4Once they lost the "Where the Wild Things Are" room, the place wasn't worth visiting.
that and hyperbowl - ionelementz112, on 02/15/2009, -2/+3It had a good first two months.
- jacksons98, on 02/16/2009, -1/+2Sony sold the Metreon in 2006 which is why there are on a lease and chose to not renew it.
- mcsurvey, on 02/17/2009, -0/+1The two Iranian dudes who run the smoothie and ice cream stand just behind the Sony store are awesome check them out.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 02/16/2009, -0/+1There was a Microsoft store in the Metreon when it first opened - long before Apple stores existed.
- hmunkey, on 02/15/2009, -1/+2The article is about a PS3 store closing.
You're being dugg down for being irrelevant. - JayD16, on 02/15/2009, -1/+2I love skub. I sure hope it stays around.
- amazingnickyb, on 02/15/2009, -0/+1That was what started the Metreon. Not really; BUT let me just say, the Metreon will now feel like it is missing a big chunk of fun.
- ahughes, on 02/15/2009, -1/+2The Metreon will never be the same.
- specialK16, on 02/16/2009, -0/+1Me neither. In the meantime,
BUY! BUY! BUY! - JayD16, on 02/15/2009, -1/+1If MS was ever stupid enough to do this, the industry would probably turn to linux.
- asherp, on 02/15/2009, -1/+1I went there a couple months ago while attending a space physics conference at the Moscone center. Every 10 minutes these dudes would come around and reset all the consoles. They insisted it was the only way for everyone to get equal time to play. It's like they're saying "look but don't touch - touch but don't taste - taste but don't swallow..." I don't believe the economy has anything to do with this. If they stopped harassing their customers this might not have happened.
- supermanred, on 02/16/2009, -1/+1I think microsoft will do well maybe, seeing as Xbox 360 is also a microsoft product...at least half of the store will be busy at all times. Now as far as the PC section, I cant imagine they could get away with free service people for Windows problems, they'd lose a fortune...
- dandonia, on 02/15/2009, -1/+1I had never heard of it. Oh well.
- anotherjack, on 02/15/2009, -2/+2*whoosh*
- GTanaka, on 02/15/2009, -3/+3In all honesty, what I love about PCs is their compatibility. If Microsoft starts doing this, it'll be a terrible downtrend for component manufacturers worldwide and a hearty loss for a lot of excellent gaming components (see video card wars between AMD and Nvidia) and otherwise niche markets (specialized hardware for research). Tech companies make good use of Open Source operating systems, but many companies both software and hardware rely on the popularity of Windows to continue production.

Newsflash people, traditional stores cost more to run than websites and have a much smaller target user. - Phocion55, on 02/15/2009, -6/+7Was this before or after 2008 Q4 earnings were announced?
- NeoTechni, on 02/15/2009, -2/+2Was I in before the fantrolling?
