Just how do you convince a girl to spend $600 on a video game system? No seriously I need to know. :) - apoc06, on 10/12/2007, -6/+41if they do this in the right way and not just copy, it could very easily be a hit for sony. the social aspects could draw in female gamers, accent gamer clans, tighten the social network features of the console, and give the hardcore an incentive to play through and meet certain game challenges. etc, etc, etc...
unfortunately this is sony afterall, so i will take the rumor with a grain of salt and wont get my hopes up too high. - theturkish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30Looks like this is more legitimate than just a rumor, Kotaku is being heavily pressured by Sony to remove the rumor.
Must be true - Brooohaha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Definitely agree about the grain of salt, but think it's the right direction. I just wish that news didn't dribble out here and there, as if everything is an afterthought. (Granted this is not news, just a rumor.) You would think there would be a road map of sorts giving clear direction of where things are going. Too bad this is fuel for the xbox fans claiming 'copy cat' syndrome.
- richterbelmont, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21Here's the thing... this isn't Woodward and Bernstein chasing Nixon, this is corporate journalism. If you're a journalist and you work closely with a company, and you enjoy the benefits of said arrangement, in return you need to play by the company's rules. I realize it's fashionable to bash Sony these days, but how can they trust Kotaku going forward? When a company sets a specific date for a media announcement, a professional journalist abides by said embargo. If they don't want to play by the rules that's their choice, but they can't have it both ways.
- Academicballa, on 10/12/2007, -9/+26If they implement achievements then I will seriously consider buying a PS3. After I buy my HDTV that is.

When I heard this I pictured a bunch of Euro clans talking on microphones during gameplay.
"Ah hah haaaah, Henri, you got a guy, behind yeeew!"
"Da comrade, nyet thees time!"
"Hurry up shoot extra bonus red spot for ding dong damage lucky shoe!" - jakster4u, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15I love Sony, right now. What took them so long!
- martinj88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11There is at least two rumors about Sony every week, now if this was just a run of the mill, no truth rumor they would ignore it like they do with the rest.
But this time they have chosen to take Kotaku off their press list AND cancel all interviews with them. My guess is that this was the big surprise they are going to show us at GDC. - zombie1991, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13yep. Unfortunately the brake pedal and reverse gear were part of that 'copy cat' syndrome too. Look at how they turned out. We all like certain things in what we do. ONE thing HAS to come first and then the rest see it as a necessity(sp). Live was first and is doing thing right. So anything that follows it is only going to bring the best of the best. Just common sense.
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I agree with the OP.
It sounds like a great idea, almost too great for Sony to actually be considering. I'm really rootin' for it though.
This won't sway any grumpy anti-Sony fanboys, but it'll look real cool to the general public.
chris4404, I know a couple of girl gamers with PS3s. One in fact that I didn't even consider a gamer. I was shocked. Anyway, I'd just tell her to buy the $500 model instead of the next iPod. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I hope Sony allocates some real bandwidth to the PS Store before the 8th. Otherwise, with that much content, it's going to be a Chernobyl-scale meltdown.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18Interesting...I will be at GDC, and if Phil Harrison says anything I will be there to see it in person! COOL!
- jake8689, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12i would like to know why xbox live has no clan support, a few games do but i would be nice if in was integrated in the dashboard
- KyleRayner, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Wow, after seeing a later post where Kotaku did get blackballed by Sony, Im surprised they had the stones to stand up to SCEA. Good job Kotaku.
- Blandyman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10It's not that your negative...
it's that you're retarded. - bittertea, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9For those who are hating on Sony and the PS3, why can't you just give them credit for trying to make my $600 investments along with many others well worth it. Seriously, is the PS3 that big of a threat to you and your beloved console(s) that you have to talk trash about it all the time. Where is the story about Sony mending their relationship w/ immersion, Motorstorms getting raved reviews, heck! what about singstar(I hear that it is big in Europe)!?!? As long as I know they are trying, I am happy with my $600 purchase. So please, enjoy Live!! on your 360, Bowling on your Wii, and stop the hate..
- Trigonometron, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10http://digg.com/gaming_news/Sony_Blackballs_Kotaku
- mobislink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Wow Wii360 gay boys are out in force. They just sit there and monitor Digg for a PS3 story. If you don't own or want a PS3 why bother. You must secretly desire the power and potential of the PS3 but can't afford one.
No offense to all other Wii and 360 owners but these die hard fanboys are retarded. - bunnymanjp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5please just stop with the bashing who cares if it like myspace or what ever and its not their idea
im sure just cause ipod is number 1 no one else should be allowed to make a mp3 player - topbravo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5just give it some time and everything will work its self out. The best part is that it will be free.
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah... Because Nintendo was so outspoken about how much they loved the Sega Nights Into Dreams controller that they decided to put their spin on it for the N64. Sure.
- Blandyman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5If they pull this off, it'd be great.
But like you, I won't hold my breath. I mean, they've taken that Law (can't remember the guy's name) "Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong." and taken it to its extremes.
I feel for Sony, I love my PS2. And I'm still gonna buy a PS3 once I save up enough money. But if they do it right, it'll be fantastic... I love the Cross Media Bar, it's actually really nice. The 360 Dashboard is just as good, but I think the XMB has a simplicity to it that 360 matches with it's Web 2.0-ness.
But PlayStation Home? I mean, *****. Just stick with PlayStation Network. The "Home" part just reminds me more and more of that "Carousel of Progress" ride at Disney World, where at the end, the weird-ass kid and his grandma are playing video-games with VR visors and helmets and the oven starts going nuts because he's yelling out his points in the game... - Zero2aHero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Sounds like it could be a cool idea, I'm curious to see how it will look. I'm not sure this is the feature that starts to sell a $600 console though.
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Oh, you mean support a purported 'news' site breaking NDAs and embargoed information? Sure thing!
- topbravo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Don't forget to add DVD upscaling :)
- apoc06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4actually, they have... phil harrison and crew have been talking about bringing a social networking aspect to the ps3 since last e3 when they were talking about singstar [and the rest of us were sleep =) ]
- Bega, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7anyone else kinda turned off by the mention of a 'myspace experience'? the rest of it sounds good though
- Zoxy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4http://kotaku.com/gaming/sony/sony-and-kotaku-makeup-240922.php
- FortyTwo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3But myspace isn't good
- theturkish, on 10/12/2007, -10/+11Me too! *Squee!*
- specialK16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Better than Hi5 or myspace IMO.
*not that I use any of them anyway. - incredibilistic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Copy-schmopy. Who cares if Sony is taking a queue from Xbox Live. It's basically what Sony fans have been screaming about and what Xbox fanboys love to throw back into PS3 owners' faces. Now all of a sudden everyone that doesn't own a PS3 is crying foul because Sony is actually taking a step that may resemble what's already working for its competitors.
In the real world they call that smart. Why reinvent the wheel when you can just add some 24's that spin and shine sterling silver?
I also agree with others that this rumor could be too good to be true since Sony has all but flubbed nearly every other aspect of the launch and its current service. I have a PS3 and love it but all the negative press isn't helping keep the faith. I'll probably never join the rabid 360 fans but I do envy the robust online service even if it does cost $50 bucks a year. At least they know they're getting their moneys' worth.
The good news is that all of this speculation and message board hoopla will be over in less than a week. Until then I'll be enjoying more kick & punch fests with Virtua Fighter 5. - bangbangblah, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3It seems like the copycat syndrome rumors should've ended with the cell processor and blu-ray . . .
- dudinatrix, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5See, now.. if they gave Microsoft and Nintendo the credit they deserve for these great concepts and THEN applied their take on it, I would respect it. But I bet anything Sony is going to toot their own horn how they're pioneering innovation with it and ... yadda yadda yadda ... suck my walnuts.
- SmashSource, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I dont know if sony can beat xbox live.. i love the ps3... but live is 2 good
- ericmcgovern, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3You mean they are going to announce some compelling games for the thing?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Careful, you'll get spammed with angry emo suicide poetry for insulting Cryspace.
- jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3this story attracted me enough to load this page and moan about how lame it is
- JonesJohnson, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6sony blackballing kotaku. could it be that this rumor is, in fact, true? could it be??
but yeah, support kotaku! - Mrkamikaze, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5"Jamil Moledina set Sony's Phil Harrison up for the spike yesterday, claiming that PLAYSTATION 3 owners will be "very happy" when Phil's keynote takes place next week."
A $300 dollar rebate coupon? - Bosox958, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1The answer to your question is no
- Abaddon1125, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Corporate journalism or not, you can't just submit to a company's threats when you are posting news of a rumor in the wild.
What's next? Can't review a Sony game negatively or they'll black ball you? When does it stop? - GeminiAce, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1We might as well re-name them Kinkos since they do so much copying.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2That's the way to attract customers. Sony Crypsace: Suicide blog beyond.
- clintacular, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Who were the adwizards behind this one?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Just wait till they start installing rootkits to "prevent Blu Ray piracy".
- FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Sony hasn't been very gunshy about announcing things far in advance. Seems like if they had something like this in the pipe ready to go they would have announced it long ago.
- DjOverEZ, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Notice how it's called "Home" and not "Homes." ZING!
