- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -6/+31..or because the framerate suffers at high definition..
- dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -10/+29Wow, what an incredible concept. I guess maybe they haven't released it yet because they still have work to do? And all this time I thought they were just going to give Microsoft a 6 month handicap to be nice.
- gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16"...it seems odd that even Sony cannot get the components necessary to use the PlayStation! Maybe they should try the Internet."
Quoted for emphasis and dugg for hilarity. I thought Sony MADE these "television" thingies. - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15This is supposed to be news? Tech demos are heavily scripted events. You won't find many marketing stooges willing to reconfigure a working demo unit.
- SniperGX1, on 10/12/2007, -10/+22Its probably because then everyone would see how much of a failure DRM is.
- Monkeman, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Uh, no, the DS is not aimed at children. I'm not going to restate the same arguments over and over defending Nintendo against the allegations of being "kiddy", but the only reason the DS has more "kid" games is because more developers of puzzle games etc. could take advantage of the dual screen easier. Thus, puzzle games arrived en masse, plus all of Nintendo's first party stuff which is obviously going to be family-oriented. The only reason PSP is "adult" is because it has sports games and shooters, either because EA or whoever thinks a dude can't feel MANLY playing a football game on that "faggy kid's toy", or because none of those developers of sports games and shooters, in their infinite capacities for innovation, have yet to realize the potential for the dual screen format.
Regarding sales: I don't have any links to back me up, but last I heard the DS was outselling the PSP 2:1. - matts0344, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Thats pretty weak. HDMI cables are hard to find? You're Sony! You have PS3 with you but you don't have an HDMI cable because "They are hard to come by"? WTF?
- tempusrob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10And several of those months need to be dedicated to manufacturing & distribution, amongst other things It's not like they can wrap up a meeting and have it on the shelves the next week...
- blw1138, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16You consider the PSP suceessful? Last time I checked, the DS was spanking the PSP.
- scaaven2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11why is thin ps2 crippled?
- bantam, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Yeah but dude People trust Nintendo
- iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Considering the hardware isn't finalized the games probably wouldn't run as fluidly in high res. Sony wouldn't want to showcase games running at anything less than 60fps considering the massive amount of hype they've given the ps3's graphical capabilities.
- Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Is anyone else completely and totally baffled by this morass of HD** acronyms and seemingly arbitrary restrictions and requirements? I've heard so many different explanations for what will and won't play HD, half of them apparently contradictory, that I think I've gotten totally lost. Incidentally, that can NOT be a good business model.
- Denver80203, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Well hold on a sec... previous to this the only thing holding Sony back was a delay in manufacturing the Blueray DVD players. NOW it would appear that entire portions of the device are not complete... this throws the entire release date into question from my point of view. Manufacturing is predictable, generally. Developement is not a fixed process.
"Wow, what an incredible concept. I guess maybe they haven't released it yet because they still have work to do?" - piratearggghhh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8If Sony is banking on Blu Ray success to offset the ridiculous costs of the PS3, they're in for a rude awakening. There's absolutely no buzz for the next gen high def DVD format other than the controversy of 2 standards itself. Hollywood has been operating on a broken model for years and for Sony to tie their pride and joy Playstation to it is just stupid. What's going to end up happening is disinterest from people who aren't into cutting edge high defintion (a majority of people) and a pissed off resentful group of current HDTV owners whose sets aren't compatible. Don't even call them early adopters, HDTV has been around for years now and the sets are over half the floorspace. Add in a catchphrase like DRM that piss more people off by reminding them of crap like rootkit and studios suing 13 year olds and you're going to have a major backlash.
- bantam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16812123043
yeah there hard to come by... - ianneub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7If your TV supports HDCP over HDMI you're ok. Most, if not all, new HDTVs support that. Only the first HDTVs out of the gate didn't have HDCP support.
- j_bellone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The PSP does not have the vast library of games that the DS has. Unfortunately this is the same reason why they aren't getting the new games as well, but the DS does not have THAT many blockbuster titles out for it either. If you really take a look the only titles that stick in people's minds are the ones that Nintendo is publishing themselves. This seems to always be the case for Nintendo's platforms. Sony does not have the third party support as they do for the PS2.
- Jeffrey903, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case. Does your TV support firmware upgrades? (I think I've read stuff somewhere that says some new TV's can have firmware upgrades -- I can be completely off here though).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yea they want people to say " the ps3 will come out soon so i will wait to compare which one is better" and "Sony said the PS3 will be alot better so i will wait" but for most of people its not working . And yet others believe what they are saying.
I think the systems will be similar in strength but my belief in Sony has been dwindling lately - Mizark, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9shh.. your common sense will not be appreciated here.
- axiomata, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Am I jumping the gun assuming that my HDTV I recently purchased, (largely to play PS3 games and watch blu-ray movies on the PS3) might not have the correct HDMI connection by the time the PS3 is finally released?
- gabebear, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7as far as I can tell the only difference between HDMI 1.1(What everyone has) and HDMI 1.3 is the audio codecs supported. HDMI 1.3 added a few super-hi-fi lossless codecs and beefed up the audio channels. The PS3 will be equipped with HDMI 1.3 ports, so for the best experience you will want HDMI 1.3 ports on your TV. If Sony doesn't have a built-in transcoder for the newer codecs then you will get a picture but no sound from a HDMI 1.3 signal on your HDMI 1.1 TV.
I think it's REALLY unlikely that the PS3 will not have HDMI 1.3 -> HDMI 1.1 transcoders. - rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Didn't the XBox 360 have working betas in homes this time last year? Sounds like the PS3 is still a shell and I have to wonder if the display was coming from a hidden betamax.
- hater2win, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Agreed, the first thing I thought when reading this was:
"Maybe they just aren't ready to do that."
It's a simple thought, easy to comprehend, yet everyone is making a big deal out of it. The system just isn't ready yet. If this was 1 month, or 2 weeks before console release, then maybe it's a reason to get all up in arms, otherwise everyone just needs to calm down and quit flaming sony. - DeadlyCouncil, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9this is just pathetic... if it launches in november, why isnt it even finished yet?
- rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I guess you can add another $100 to the price of the PS3 for just the HDMI cable. Maybe less if there is a rebate but come on. How expensive is the PS3 going to be once you buy everything needed to run the system as promised?
- ImpactedColon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You're right about not seeing a revolution screenshot, but it's apples and oranges. When Nintendo plans on releasing things (like the DS lite in Japan), they delay weeks not months, and come forward to their customers immediately with apologies (not excuses).
This is a high-stakes release for Sony, but it's arguably higher for Nintendo, who is sort of on the ropes (though I prefer them to MS and Sony). Nintendo is keeping their mouths shut so that Sony doesn't "borrow" any ideas, at least that's what I think. Clearly, Sony is not in a "final" arc of development and could see something in the Revolution they like.
Nintendo has been clear that they are releasing information in a limited way to get the excitement peaked at the right time, whereas Sony is just circling the wagons against information leaks. Why does this feel just like George Mason vs. Connecticut to me all of a sudden? Which company is having more fun.... - Pplus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Damn right, I have worked many of these conferences (not in the gaming field). It usually takes more than 1/2 a day to get a setup stable and to the point where you happy with it and confident in it. If some random people strolled up to me and started to suggest that I use some different inputs on the TVs, I'd tell them to get lost. It sounds like they were trying to be polite by making up excuses. "Oh, you have the cables in your car? Well by all means, go grab those questionable cables, and I'll start breaking down my working demo on an active convention floor, hope everything goes correctly and I don't lose my job when my boss comes by and sees the demo down..."
C'mon now, at worst they can be faulted for bad demo planning by not utilizing the HD outputs. Which brings up another point, almost all televisions and monitors are supplied by the convention, which means there are no assurances they'll have HDMI inputs. Much better to be safe than sorry at a venue like this... - untzboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3 Whoa whoa whoa whoa. Am I being told that the PS3 will not hook up to my TV with the same cords? I know that the part going IN the PS3 will probably be different, but I'm talking bout the red, white, and yellow jacks that go to the TV. Will those change to something HD specific? **tear**
- trod13, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Well, at least we know theres is more good reason for a november release. Unless Sony is trying to screw us in some way. I still think nintendo is the way to go right now still.
- jayf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6A lot of these floor people are picked by their looks, voice, and approachability. They aren't the hardcore nerds who designed it so I bet they don't even know how to connect this cable.
- untzboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3IS THIS THE END OF RED WHITE AND YELLOW?? NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
- FourDoor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5People are complaining because Sony said that the PS3 was to be released via retail within "Spring 2006" (less than 3 months from now) but delayed it due to BlueRay DRM technicalities.
Reports like this just shows that Sony is blowing more smoke and that this work in progress PS3 is farther behind than what we have been led to believe over and over and over again. The PS3 wasn't delayed because of BlueRay, the PS3 is being delayed simply because it isn't ready overall and Sony does not want to admit to that fact in public. - exis73, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You are probably a dirtbag fanboy. But you are a dirtbag fanboy with a point.
- DoctorNo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The demos were shown in HD resolution using HD black AV cable, just not with HDMI cables.
Hardly news, and much ado about nothing. Really, what PR staff reconfigures a demo unit on the showroom floor at a conference, especially when everything is run off a dev kit (I doubt they even know how)? Honestly, try to ask any PR staff member to get even a PS2/Gamecube/Xbox demo unit at any large conference and you're likely to get denied. - gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7*sigh* I seriously hope Sony's not THAT scared of showing their games in HD. What'll we do wrong, get a *gasp!* screenshot?
These guys need professional help if they are--and if they haven't implemented HDMI signals, this increasingly lame and maimed* system will need it too.
*no emulator or codec puns intended - shattadeya, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Can you read? No HDMI 1.3 cables!!!! it did not say anything about Red White and Yellow cables. But to show HD you MUST have atleast Red Green Blue (component) cables or higher but they were not available. This just show how much PS3 will fail.
Sorry Sony Fanboys but its the truth - filovirus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2HDMI 1.3??? Do displays need to have a version number now? Make a ***** standard digital input and stick with it you greedy *****.
- drn666, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is nonsense... there is nothing in this article to suggest that HDMI 1.3 will be required... it's just speculation. What's more likely is that the people at the booth were idiots - saying things like "HDMI TV's are hard to come by" while standing next an HDMI TV is probably the first hint.....
- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Wait..how would that show how much of a failure DRM is? It would just show how unpolished the games are in their early stages.
- Mindstormer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sony just declined to let the guy plug the cable in order to view the PS3 in high definition on the TV's there. Not that sony doesnt have the right plugs in the ps3, or that they wont support it. NO BIG DEAL.
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1AFAIK, no. I've read nothing anywhere that states that you won't be able to hook up a PS3 via composite cables (Red/White/Yellow). OTOH, it'll probably not look all that great when hooked up that way (see: XBox 360). Component will look better, but HDMI will give the best possible picture (same with HDTV).
- DragonChaser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i think u guys shouldnt give it too much attention... big deal? its same as if i would turn down an offer to install an game on my pc because it might be an security risk.
This to insure safety... so did sony!
this is probably wrote by an fanboy just trying to make us think sony is bad or is lieing.
The ps3 will be HD compatible you dont need to worry at all with this kind of crap.... afterall those people werent prepared to show an demo in HD ;) - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Logic doesn't tend to prevail on PS3 related stories. Everybody believes that Sony is going to kamikaze this thing on purpose, and also that somehow the whole Rootkit fiasco has something to do with how good of a console the PS3 will be
Again, Sony's probably not ready to show stuff off in HDMI, and I'm sure that's a huge blow to all 10 of you who have HDMI TVs, but Sony is a company that has had decades of experience in the electronics industry, and most Digg users treat them like they've been at this game for about 2 months - samdu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10240&cs_id=1024003&p_id=2412&seq=1&format=2&style=
Yeah, HDMI cables are $100. Sure. Right. Whatever. - rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Am I jumping the gun assuming that my HDTV I recently purchased, (largely to play PS3 games and watch blu-ray movies on the PS3) might not have the correct HDMI connection by the time the PS3 is finally released?"
You are correct Sir. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8haha, good point. another reason i believe they are delaying it, is to wait until the hardware required drop a bit in cost.. and give more time for the HD format war to calm down..
- ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Wait for the format war to calm down? Yeah, with blu-ray at Best Buy ( http://digg.com/hardware/blue-ray_on_sale_at_best_buy_$1000.00_pre-order ) going at 1K - the format war isnt going to ease up when they release their games - if anything it will HEAT UP.
- merdiesel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Another way to avoid showing gameplay.
