- anonatron, on 10/12/2007, -9/+210It will function via "lack of vision" technology... something Sony is experiencing currently.
- homeobocks, on 10/12/2007, -16/+199This just in: the $499 version is actually a block of soft, soft cheese.
Sony hopes to use a BAIT-AND-SWITCH to get you to buy the $599 deluxe PSCheese, a block of firm, aged cheddar with 1.21 jigawatts of processing megahurts. - nickconfer, on 10/12/2007, -12/+147Remember it doesn't cost $600. Don't forget these addons:
tax (7% = +$42)
extra controllers ($35 * 3 extra controllers = $105)
a freaking game ($60)
===============
So now your paying a whopping $807 to play one game that will NOT have as good of graphics as any pc game in no time at all, and will have only about 10% of the functionality of the Wii controller. What a bargain! - fingiecrookie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+124In other words: the PS3 will launch for $599. That's insane.
- PBoiIceBerg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+111Everyone just buy a Wii for half the price and twice the fun.
- nickconfer, on 10/12/2007, -8/+109Sony screwing people over is in the fiber of their company. Do I have to mention root kit?
Wii are not amused. - teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -3/+65Somehow they forgot to mention that in the briefing...screwing us again
- soogy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+61Yep. I can't wait to pay $600 for a system that will suck a bit less than the system that would have sucked for $500!
Is Sony accepting organs as a method of payment, yet? Perhaps a donation to the Church of Satan would be more feasible. - Darq1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+50Its actually in Fourth place now....right behind the Phantom.
- anonatron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+50Yes nick, but don't forget that you will be forced to buy 3 games to get a launch system, an extra controller, high def cables, etc totalling in at about $1200.
- duke_nate, on 10/12/2007, -8/+56Its official. the sony gaming division is *****!
- JeffH, on 10/12/2007, -1/+45I love how Sony let's the "little" details just slip through the cracks...
- fyngyrz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+50Remember, buying HDMI enables HDCP copy protection. As a component video connection can do the full HD spec, and any monitor worth using has component inputs, and we *already* have a robust digial audio spec, why would you want HDMI anyway? Isn't asking for HDMI like saying, "Give me DRM, because I'm ignorant?" DRM is rumored to be the abbreviation for "Digital Rights Management", but probably stands for "Deny Rights Mercilessly" or something similar. Think before you support it. It's not a good thing.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+47All your Wii are belong to us
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+46Who else thinks PS3 is gonna be 3rd?
- shortkid422, on 10/12/2007, -3/+43Things are just getting worse and worse for the PS3. I can see the Wii actually doing betetr than PS3 now.
- GoMe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+42This might actually be a blessing in disguise for Blu-Ray and HD content in general. If a large amount of Blu-Ray owners have the cheaper PS3, studios won't want to use HDCP to downres the content because they would lose out on a lot of sales. This will mean that we probably won't have to upgrade our non-HDMI HDTVs anytime soon.
- tupuli, on 10/12/2007, -3/+39pats1237, what's the upside to this announcement?
- Saintlink, on 10/12/2007, -10/+46I've been saying it all along, SONY is past their prime and this another example of such a claim. Bait and switch? Screw the customer? Overprice the goods? Sony is the mastermind of such tactics. I for one, aren't buying it.
- cyrix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36I absolutely agree.
The controller and the price were a hell of a shock to me. I sort of expected the price, but was hoping I was going to be wrong. The controller came out of left field to be honest. Nearly knocked me senseless. But that won't deter me from at least giving it a chance. If it can do all it promises, great, if it let's me down, my money's going elsewhere.
And 10 bucks says me and you get buried beyond all belief simply because we said something remotely positive.
EDIT: *****...I think I lost 10 bucks. - MisterCookie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36Sony is starting to get really smug. All of the analysts state that PS3 will be the top seller, but no one ever specifies why. I can understand all the good developer support, but it seems to me everyone is basing their predictions on how well the name itself sells.
And because its a requirement when discussing business models^^:
Phase One: Set the console price to $600, rip off your competitors, and then use an overpriced data format.
Phase Two: ???
Phase Three: Profit! - Psykus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+34Or buy both a Wii (rumored $200) and an Xbox 360 ($400 premium)...adds up to the total PS3 cost.
- zeebo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33Agreed, the PS3 and the 360 remind me too much of the expensive consoles of yore, which everyone wanted, but which fell in the face of consoles that (while not as capable hardware wise) were more fun to play, and were accessable to a wider market.
- sinner0423, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34I knew this was gonna happen. People argued, speculated, and promised different prices for the PS3, but when it comes down to it, the "official launch price" only gets you 1/3rd of what Sony originally promised the console could do.
It honestly looks like the Wii may have a serious chance to be king of the consoles. I've seen a lot of gamers opinon sway towards being pissed at Sony, and swearing they'll buy from Nintendo.
I guess $600 will dictate whether or not you're a hardcore Sony fanboy. Better start saving. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+31Don't forget the WiFi adapter. $100
Those bastards led us to beleive that WiFi would be included... That would've been a $100 dollar value over the 360. That's it... I'm not waiting for this *****. - kazem, on 10/12/2007, -7/+33Ha! "wii". Good one.
- chickenlegs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27But nick, you have to add taxes for the controllers/games also.
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27Wait, I thought Sony was launching the PS3. When did it become the 3DO?!?!?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25I hope sony has a vagina, because it's about to get *****.
- eddanger, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25Coffin meet nail, nail this is coffin.
- merdiesel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Does sony want the PS3 to even compete?
- Svoma15, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21I'm no Nintendo Fanboy..But..
Wii might as well all get a Wii instead.. - solarix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Wow I wanted so hard to like the PS3, This is looking less and less likely with every update today. Between price, blatant rip off of the Revolution (I still can't bring myself to say Wii), and now these three things. At least with the "Pro" 360 system, everything that came with it you could purchase after buying the console. So if you changed your mind, you weren't stuck with having to deal with it. Sure it would cost you more, but the consumer had the OPTION.
Nacs, I would love to know what stores you are going to and having to pay $700 for a 360. I am sure M$ would love to know even more, Because they don't do that. I have been in Walmart and Best Buy within the past week and have seen both the Standard and Pro systems for their listed price, no bundle. And if you did pay $700 for it, you are getting at least that much worth of stuff you are just being forced to buy all of it. From what I am aware of, retailer's are not allowed to sell the system for more than the list price. That is not their option, that pricing comes from the manufacturer/distributer. - jackal123, on 10/12/2007, -11/+29Anyone consider the fact that you can use component cables (support up to 1080p)? Although its not a pure digital connection, it works fine enough for most people.
On a side note, I think HDMI is a retarded connection. Who thought of combining audio and video in a single cable? I like to send my video to my TV and my audio to my receiver. - xb00t, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Goodbye, Sony and hello Nintendo....
- jhunt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Yeah, I couldn't believe it. I was just thinking "Oh, so the difference is only in hard drive space? Maybe they decided to NOT gimp the cheap version." No Wireless or HDMI is pretty ridiculous.
Also, doesn't no HDMI mean no Blu ray HD playback, as it needs that digital DRM thing or whatever? - Crazy_8, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19SUPERTOY 7:
"Have they gone ***** crazy"
Yes... - SUPERTOY, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Have they gone ***** crazy!
- nebunezzar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16He meant the base 360 didn't have a hdd or wireless controllers, but they could be upgraded later. The base ps3 can't be upgraded since it doesn't have wifi, card readers, or hdmi out.
- NSXG5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16HDMI ports are one of the biggest reasons I was holding out for the PS3. If your going to play HD games how can you not use the best HD digital connection? I love that HDMI uses one cable for both HD video and digital sound. Also didn't Sony always say the PS3 was going to have 2 HDMI ports so you can hook the console up to Two HD Displays at the same time?
- floejoe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16So, for a price of a PS3 I can buy a Nintendo Wii, with 3 extra controllers, 6 games, a memory card, probably component cables too, and have money left over for a pizza when my friends come over to enjoy the system.
- lane.montgomery, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17You mean how everyone focuses on Nintendo's bad name and Sony's bad everything-else-but-the-name?
- rhino_rampant, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17This just in: Sony next-gen system renamed to...
PSWii 360
(but they're still working out the gaming part) - mrisaka, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Well, I am angered as much as everyone else...but someone above asked why industry people predict that it's going to be a top seller.
Metal Gear Solid 4
Final Fantasy XIII
Etc.
That's the only reason. That's why Sony thinks they can get away with this crap.
Wiiiiiiiiiiii! - millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Well it's got at least one ***** (Ken Kutaragi)
- DJB31st, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Av Multi Out and Digital Out (Optical) apparently...
guess this is fairly big news and goes some way to explain the massive price difference between the two versions? - Rangoth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13...and people gave Microsoft crap for the $400 SKU?
- jhunt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13The PDF is on Sony's site though, so I don't know why it would be wrong.
- GoMe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Wi-Fi is included with the $600 version.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13LOL, good one. I don't think Nintendo would stoop as low as Sony though.
