- Incognito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I remember when they came out with Shadows of Luclin. Had to be the worst expansion launch ever. Not to mention it erased a lot of the velious textures that were listed as features in the previous expansion.
God the lag never stopped. If you didn't have the expansion, then your character was the default look to anyone who did making you look bald and stupid.

Sony has been screwing the public over. - bjkrautk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think the MMORPG market has finally started to exceed its saturation point. WoW is the harbinger of doom for many of the licenses out there: if a company can't offer a better product than WoW, they'll eventually lose market share....and when that share comes with a monthly fee....the development budget goes with it.
For the longest time, I was completely anti-MMORPG. Gradually, however, I've been worn down by Penny Arcade and a number of gaming sites, and finally tried out WoW. I get it now....sorta. It's actually cheaper to drop $15 a month for a game you really enjoy than it is to chase a "greatest hits" game every month. If you want to play something else for a month or two, just cancel the subscription & they'll hold on to your characters until you get back. If you play it that way, it's really no worse a return on your money than most other buying patterns....possibly even cheaper. - Tipa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Scotty, ALL these companies want to make money off you, SOE included. None of these big companies are running these games from the goodness of their hearts.
SOE doesn't make money if they drive people away. If you vote with your dollars, SOE will listen - they have no choice. I would like to see actual stories on why SOE does what it does a lot more than some random player ranting. I read this article hoping to understand their reasoning.
I'm not surprised PoP wasn't finished (in EQ1) when it launched. I'm also not entirely sure that was a bad thing, since they knew pretty much how long it would take for people to get there. By the time players got to the elemental planes, they were in. The Council fight in PoE2 was broken, but was it on purpose? I doubt it. Content, important content, has been broken in every MMO I have ever played.
Best thing to do is abandon MMOs altogether. If you're not having a good time, you shouldn't be playing. Really. You shouldn't be giving them your money. People who hang around for years constantly complaining and paying - what's up with that, anyway? - StarWarsFever, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm not even going to start on this. I played SWG since launch and was able to sitness SOE's tactics first hand. I cancelled all of my accounts shortly after the NGE. The best was was all of the proposed upgrades w/ the Trials of Obi-Wan expansion, whereas they knew none of them would ever take place due to the NGE being patched in not 2 weeks after ToOB was out.... they screwed everyone and i hope they go under. My only hope is that LA will licence another company for a Star Wars MMO. F SOE in the A!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ain't disregarding a damn thing here.
The track record of SONY is pretty bad and the list of bad things is growing.
Digg. - Molnies, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Ya, and when the PS3 fails to impress, they wont have anything left.
might as well filre for bankrupsy now sony, and save a couple hundred million $s."
Um...are you stupid?
SoE and PS3 is such a small part of Sony Corp. This is a $71.216 billion USD company, small things like this doesn't really do that much of a difference in the long run. - StarWarsFever, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hell yeah, America is full of hypocrites... i hate Sony, i hate Wal-Mart, but i'll probably end up buying a PS3 at Wal-Mart, lol
/sarcasm on
long live capitalism - StarWarsFever, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1like i said before, i did cancel my account, so i believe i can still bitch as much as i want, lol. but i do believe that Digg is not a place to flame.
one other thing... Sony, like Mitsubishi, is what one would call a "Ziabatsu." If you've ever taken any Japanese history classes, this might ring a bell. While neither are true Ziabatsu's, as they were outlawed after WW2, (Jap's version of the Sherman Anti-Trust Act), they are still very prevalent. You see, these companies are huge and have their hands in multiple market shares. They can afford to loose money in certain area, while they will continue to profit (and make up for lost profit) in other areas. I could speak on this for hours, but I'll try to sum it up. Sometimes i believe that Sony doesn't give a damn. Sure, they might start to loose money from SOE, but they are just gonna make it up w/ their PSP's or upcoming PS3's, or their TV's, or their computers, or their camera's, or their Home Theater Systems, or anything else they make.
I only hope Wal-Mart doesn't get into the MMO business.... hell, they are already pushing for their own bank, and starting to develop automobiles.... but that's another story altogether.
um... i forgot what i was talking about, lol so...... screw large corporate monsters. booya - brandonhines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I bought the SWG LE for $70 (or $80?) and launch and only played the free month. It blew man. It really felt like an imcomplete game. I wound up selling it for $30 or so dollars on eBay. Come to think of it, that was the worst LE ever. A ***** pin? Ugh.

might as well filre for bankrupsy now sony, and save a couple hundred million $s. - Abx0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sony may be a big company, but why aren't they disciplining their divisions for unethical decisions? Because the entire company is unethical. Stop buying from Sony!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I should clarify, some of the things about EQ2 in that article are innacurate, the SWG stuff is very true
- Smokezz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nohart: Thats a little offtopic? I'd hate to see a lot off topic.
- CreepingDeath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wickeddrag0on, you do realize the sweet sweet irony of bitching on digg about people bitching on digg?
I experianced first hand the BS with EQ1, and eq2 never held my interest longer then lv15 so I've little to say about that. SWG's problems begin with the HORRID UI, I wasn't able to get past that to even try the game. Same with FFXI to be honest, the interface was so horribly un-intuitive that I didn't play that more then 2 or 3 times before becoming so flustered I just removed it from my HDD.
The BS with expantions is exactly whats wrong with SOE and anyone else that does the same, when you sell me 15 new zones to explore, they better damn well be there, and ready to explore. IF not, bill it as 12 new zones to explore with 3 more coming over the next X months. Don't lie to me. - buffymcmuffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Personally I love Sony. They keep comming up with ways to save me money by giving me more reasons not to buy their products.
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dugg for Disco Stew.
- Mizark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why do old mailbag letters, matched with an Anti- Sony TItle = Front page news. GO GO GROUPTHINK.
- dawan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i hate SOE -- they ruined my favourite game TWICE with "enhancements" on my dime - SWG used to be a great game - this article is of no surprise to me or as i'm sure to anyone else who's played SWG
- JoeWag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This article is not bogus, as the poster claims in the first comment. In fact, it is true from my experience with SoE. I say this because I too was a guide for EverQuest and EverQuest 2 (I cannot speak of anything regarding SWG) and those zones were NOT complete nor was the Froglok Quest.
If anyone else remembers, post Velious, even Vex Thal or Acryllia Caverns were either bugged to all hell. Every single expansion afterwards the major zones were EMPTY or broken so players could not access them.
SOE has very poor business practices and it reflect in their products past and present.
That's not to say, however, that the majority of other companies that product MMOs don't. - navster15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I really don't get this whole Sony is evil thing. Sure, SOE has done some unethical things, but i don't see how that makes the entire company evil. I own a PlayStation and PlayStation 2 and I must say that they are both great machines. Further, i own two Sony televisions and have yet to have an issue with either one of them. This whole fan boy business has really got to stop. Sony is a huge conglomeration, and some of its divisions do shady things. But to say that Sony is entirely evil is blowing things way out of proportion. A manufacturer of entertainment devices really can't be all that bad when you compare it to some other companies operating today.
- mshea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The linked letter reeks of the same lysenko science statistics seen from a great many disgruntled board posters over at the SOE forums. The 60% finished statistic is a perfect example. According to his amazingly rounded statistic (are you sure it wasn't 58.4%?) there wasn't a single model, piece of artwork, line if dialog, or single piece of loot for 7.2 of the 18 zones available in POP. His own example only mentions five zones or 27% of the expansion, not 40%.
His example of the Froglok quest is also way over the top. If any human being really spent 10 to 12 hours a week for six months following a quest that had no end, they need to find other ways to spend their time.
Any message the writer of this letter had is lost in overexaggurations and false statistics. There are plenty of areas where SOE has made mistakes but better to point them out than make things up. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For those jumping at the chance to correct me by saying "SOE didn't make the PSP" SOE is Sony Online Entertainment, BTW. Owned by Sony.

Digg. - Rayonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL, and people think *Blizzard* has problems. They're practically gods compared to Sony Online Entertainment.
- diggdeeznutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They are $ony for a reason..what did you expect??
- ocelot453, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To do this to yoiur customers is wron gand it a crime. I have never played either of these games but ***** if i did I would taek their ass to court and for other people to sit buy and not do any thing about this really sucks. And to see some one DISCRACE the starwars name....well lets not go there. I guess not playing these games is a start but i think they need to pay.
- b04155, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Step 1: Don't pay anything over a flat, one time price for any game.
Step 2: Still bitch about it when the game still isn't completed. - Mist0r_Wiggles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sony makes the Japanese look bad.
- filovirus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0World of Warcraft is more fun than EQ. Sony will 'screw the pooch' with the PS3, with XBox 360 and Nintendo coming out on top.
1. PSP stuck pixels Strike 1....
2. Rootkit debaucle Strike 2....
3. SWG mess Strike 3.....
and they haven't released the PS3....
Maybe Hoo Hoo is still inventing the PS3 and Sony is just waiting to rip him off...Tell'em Fred - kris2pe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow no wonder nobody is playing Everquest! Finally some of us can get a"LIFE" once more thanks again Sony! I mean Sory!
- Hawk4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can't say I'm surprised. SOE took a good concept with SWG and shot the hell out of it. A shame, too--a good SW MMORPG would've really been awesome.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dugg for sure.
Sometimes these stories are the only way to get to companies like Sony, who systematically ignore problems within their consumers and focus on important issues, like taking your money, or (PSP) wasting time and energy on 'firmware upgrades' which are nothing more than security fixes to keep you from basically running what you want on YOUR system.
But this is Sony's way. This is why I'm not believing the rumors mounting of Sony's supposed "Life" online community to rival that of XBOX Live. Yeah, we'll see... give me and estimated price Sony and I'll listen. - Mathiias, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dugg without even reading (although I'm about to read it)... as a long time player of SWG, I am well aware of the nasty and uncaring nature of SOE.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't ***** stand Sony now. This is beyond disgusting and it kills me that they will get away with it, and that consumers are too addicted to actually boycott the game and stop paying subscription fees. Even with this outrage, I am saddened that players will continue to support the game with their hard-earned dollars. Wait, hold is this news? Have players done anything?
- brainjuice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been beta testing Counter Strike:Source for a year and half, guess im Valve's sucker...
- xelloss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0they do this on FFXI, For Ex. FFXI CoP expan when it shiped last year was not all complete, they just finished up the entire thing last Dec, but I still haven't got far into the missions of CoP.
- woodie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very interesting read, changes my views on Sony that's for sure.
- Charlotte_Web, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Three words: Class Action Lawsuit
- mirunit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I played SWG for 2 years and yeah, this guy is right. At first I had alot of fun even though the game was missing some features that were promised, and not all the classes were "playable" - meaning that some were so terrible that they could not be played correctly. Anyways the sci-fi feel was awesome and crafting was alot of fun, all up until the CU then it was pretty much over.
- Mizark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I don't own anything that is made from Sony, reading this i don't feels bad when they crack a game, PlayStation, psp, cd, etc... i guess they deserve it after all....."
You will steal no matter what, don't even attempt to offer lame justification. That hurts the game developers more than Sony anyway. - Chimichanga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All of the EQ1 stuff is true, although they skipped how the VT key in Luclin wasn't implemented nor were all the gods in PoP tested to any semi-reasonable extent. Seeing as they're required for progression in the game, it was somewhat of a drawback. Many of the people playing those games took the 'advice' offered here of voting with their money; the guilds were tired of beta testing their content and paying to do so. Since then there has been a decline of players and server mergers to keep population from swindling.
- triptogn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How is this an article? This is out of a mailbag written by some disgruntled player who is pulling "facts" out of thin air.
Anyone just blindly believing an article written by a nobody should be ashamed of themselves.
Having empty areas at the a launch of a product is shady business? What about the empty areas in World of Warcraft that players have been banned for finding?
As for the froglok thing, who said they were in the game at launch? Where is the link/proof of this? Not to mention, it is highly unlikely that players were "scouring" the game trying to unlock the mystery of the frogloks with every waking moment of their game experience. They were probably just playing the game like the rest of them, but want to cause a stink.
SWG was a not so good game from day one. Being mad that its a not so good game now, is ridiculous. The company took a risk to try to IMPROVE the game, and it belly flopped, but this is considered shady practices? Don't forget Lucasarts hand in this game as well, it's not like they just let any company run wild with their licenses, they are right there making the decisions with them. - buddapalm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nothing in this article surprises me; I'm just glad it's getting out in the open now.
- rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sony is known for it's quality software. I bet they could sell a reskinned PS2, call it a PS3 and make a fortune with upgrades over time.
- lordcat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If anyone finds a 'class action lawsuit' against soe for this type of stuff... be sure to post it on digg so we can sign up for it...
...I've got 2 accounts myself (and have friends thave have accounts as well) and would love to get in on the action (not for any monetary reward... just to see soe have to pay out a few million for this crap... even if it's to some lawer types...) - prkchpsndwiches, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Shame to hear about these business tactics. Rough stuff.. On another note... Ionticed some of you mentioned that people should abandon mmorpg's , and that tehy all have ***** tacttics, but I have to disagree. I've been a casual player of Guild Wars since it launched, and have never been dissapointed. They deliver what the fans want.
- krforrester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How about Digg get its facts straight and not refer to this "letter" as an article thereby inferring that it actually has been researched and approved for publication with actual facts? Seems to me that Digg is the one being misleading.
