- JoeDonH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I apologize for digging the story twice, but it took the Devs all day to get the update to the game completed after announcing it first thing this morning. Enjoy it, and see you all on the battlefield!
- terminalpariah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5At 2GB, a torrent would be nice. Be sure to use a browser/download manager that supports resuming.
- pinkfireball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This offer is for the download version of the trial edition of the online game for new subscribers (excludes SOE Station Access Accounts). Additional subscription fees apply thereafter. Internet connection required -- players are responsible for all applicable internet fees. A valid credit card or pre-paid SOE game card is required to pay the recurring subscription fees that apply after the trial period of gameplay included with this offer expires. In addition, to download and play this game, you must affirmatively agree to the game's User Agreement and Software License, Sony Online Terms of Service and Rules of Conduct. The PlanetSide Reserves trial program ends March 24, 2007, regardless of when you sign up. Please see PlanetSide Reserves FAQ for more info.
- Emraith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Anyone having a problem with the official download, psreserves.zip, try using http://www.greyfalcon.net/psinstall.zip then once you get the launchpad up with that, change the shortcut link to "C:Program FilesSonyStationLaunchPadLaunchPad.exe" /game:planetside /batch:2007908 /plan:426 this should let you download through the regular update server, and give you the right option for a new account
- NoSuchAgency, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"I've got the full version of this game, but I was wondering if I can use the free limited sign up to save me from paying for it monthly?"
I don't believe so. Unless you cancel your old account and start a new one from scratch.
I might just try this out... Never played a MMO game before, I always figured it was a huge waste of time and money. At least I won't waste any money.... ;D
PS: am I the only one who thinks "BFR" doesn't really stand for "Battle Frame Robotics" but instead for "Big F**king Robot"? - deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4So you're saying that Sony != Sony. That's an interesting point of view.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Corporation_shareholders_and_subsidiaries - cut419ram, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I bet some of you are asking "What's so good about a free play program in this game?" Well, let me answer by saying that the more the merrier! You will be pitted against other real-life players in a large scale war spanning across multiple continents in a major struggle for dominance... Get your free account today!
- Urlithani, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yay for PS!
- GreyFlcn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2MMOFPS, similar to Tribes, for Free
Kick ass!
(Less jumpjets tho, but it still kicks ass) - CerusVI, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've been waiting for this for a good long while now. Can't wait to see how this plays out!
- Radant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is going to be awesome, can't wait
- Xale, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Excelent... should enjoy this.
- JoeDonH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, to clarify, this Reserves download is for the trial version of the game. I suggest going to this link to see the full FAQ of the promotion:
http://planetside.station.sony.com/news_archive.vm?id=67028§ion=News&month=current
You aren't playing a separate version of the game from the paying subscribers. You are right on the servers with those that are subscribed to the game, however you are limited in your Battle Rank and Command rank. That, and when you exit the game each time, you go to a promotional screen asking if you want to subscribe. Still, I view that as a minor hindrance to check out a fun game that has until now only been playable if you actually purchase the game from the direct2drive download, or if you could somehow find it in a store lol.
Win-win in my opinion, however it is a very large download, and all said will take up nearly 3 gigs on your hard drive. The promotion is lasting for one year. That means if you sign up now, you can play for nearly a year for free (if you don't mind not leveling up after a certain point). Sign up 360 days from now (day after the promotion has started) and you only have 4 days to play. - DarkStorm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Ever played an online FPS game and wished you had more people playing, or that there was just a bit more variety in what you could do.
Hows 399 players sound? or tanks, APC's, fighter planes, bombers, air transport, snipers, demolitions, Heavy infantry, assault buggies.. and thats not an exhaustive list.
Try Planetside... decide for yourself if you like it. - akimbobo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5this game rocks and thousands of people are playing it. This is the first MMOFPS out there.
and it's free for a year - JoeDonH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can't see any reason there would be a rootkit in this download. The rootkit on those Sony music discs were there as a DRM measure. This is a free trial for a game that is available for download, and SOE doesn't care if you distribute it yourself via your website or torrent feed. There is no need for DRM protection, as they don't care if you copy it and distribute it.
I'm not the biggest Sony fan either, but they'd have to be pretty evil - as in loud cackles and horns on their heads and flames behind them evil, to install a rootkit in this download just to do it. Just my .02 - mydickhertz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I gotta say, I was in the beta and it sucked. Long repetitive walks to BFE, horrible play balancing, etc, etc. Don't forget these are the same people that brought world-wide attention to root kits in the interest of DRM.
- jamesob5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2***** that, I lost 2 years of my life to SOCOM.
- bob301, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2All of SOE's games are download-able from the Internet entirely. Since you need an account to play anyway, they don't rally care if you download, copy, or distribute the games.
See this page:
http://help.station.sony.com/cgi-bin/soe.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1812 - GotGoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Do you have to enter a credit card to start the free trial?
- JoeDonH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Apparently, there is a bit of an issue with the bandwidth for downloading the psreserves.zip file from the official link. I am having no problem with it using the DownTHEMall extension for Firefox, but apparently there is a torrent up on mininova.org as well at:
http://www.mininova.org/get/262444 - Marsman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Planetside went live May 2003. I believe SWG came after that and feels more like an RPG to me. Planetside has no NPC's (non-player characters) - a 100% player vs. player FPS.
- hasbeen, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5If this game is to amazing, and thousands of people play it, why is SOE resorting to this?
The truth is that the game is horrible, and has gotten worse since the final days of beta. It just kept going downhill with new additions making the game a lot worse. Its player base has also been rapidly declining, which ultimately resulted in in-game ads, and now a 'free' trial version, which is designed to increase the player base and try to keep current paying customers, or perhaps convince trial members to sign up, preventing the game to get shut down.
Nonetheless, the game is fun for like one or two weeks, but then gets extremely repetitive and annoying. Trust me, you'll feel the same way when a cool battle ends quickly due to non-stop OS attacks, millions of BFRs and other overpowered crap. - JoeDonH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The installer from GreyFlcn has been updated now with the following changes if you don't want to download from the SOE site:
1. Supports Reserves account creation
2. Uninstaller registered through windows "Add/Remove Programs"
3. Backup system included inside the uninstaller (Saves configuration files, and screenshots)
4. Solved a bug where PlanetSide usage wouldn't appear on XFire
Here's the link - thanks Grey:
http://www.greyfalcon.net/psinstall.zip - Emraith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah, agree 100% with Hamma. the game might suck or get boring to you if you're not in an outfit, or one that sucks. but i've been playing this game for 1.5 years, and theres definately been times where ive been very frustrated and almost cancelled my account.
this isnt just a 32 player random scrub run around and kill stuff deathmatch...this game you actually have to communicate and work together to get stuff done.. you need guys to do support, medics, engies, hackers.. need drivers for vehicles, with gunners that actually know what theyre doing. dropping 10-30 guys onto a base and knowing that everyone with you knows what the hell they're doing is an awesome thing..... - Emraith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is an online game..there is no rootkit in it....the game is normally $12.99/month(or less), this is an option to play the game completely free of charge. yes there are a few ads in the game when you're in the sanctuary, but thats it. there are no ads when you're in an area that you can actually shoot stuff. i'm rarely in the sanctuary for more than 2 minutes....and anyway, theres ways(search planetside official forums) to block all the ads by adding the ad servers to your hosts file...
game is free, if you dont like it, or think soe is out to h4x0r you into paying for their game, dont bother with it..we got enough idiots in the game already - Emraith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hey spartn119, or anyone really, can feel free to email me at emraithak@gmail.com, and ill email you back my xfire and AIM, or info for teamspeak, and we can help you with whatever you need help with in the game
- xenoputtss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2PlanetSide is a horrible game. It was once cool, but that was only during the first 6 months of release. I played this game for 1.5 years before giving up hope of them improving it. I logged on recently during the free month for Christmas, and there were ads...In the freaking game!!
The game needs heavy re-balancing to make it fun. There is so much walking in the game that I would estimate that 95% of the time is you getting to a battle. Nothing makes any real world sense, like you can sniper shot someone in the head...and they will live. Or you can run over someone with jeep, and they live! They give you the ability to cloak in the game, but by adjusting the settings on your monitor, you can see cloakers like they are wearing strobe lights on their head. Missiles from planes if hit directly on a human target will do less damage the a bullet, you get weapons out of a computer console, there is No Goal to the game...no one can ever win. Everyone becomes a commander that can chat globally telling everyone else what to do......
flat up, the game really isn't even worth playing for free. - JoeDonH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I realized too late that I should have posted this up at the top of the comments in case people don't want to read all the way down. Sorry 'bout that, but read this:

http://www.greyfalcon.net/psinstall.zip - dangerboy13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll check it out, can't hurt.
- Spartn119, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Works fine for me so far, thanks for the instructions. I changed the shortcut link and everything and the ETA to download everything is about an hour and 15 minutes. Can't wait to try this game out!
- MoFoKeR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well i dont kno why they are making a big piss about this game ive seen it in the bargain bin for 9.99 for sometime now.i may or may not check it out...ill stick to joint operation's 150 server 75 vs 75...if i dont like tha game play...
- BaCk1a5h, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1True, that and I was tired of walking everywhere and the idea of getting EXP for reading crap was pretty stupid. Too many things going on at one time. I like simple things...ooo there's a guy...Bang he's dead. Not, HOLY ***** theres 300 guys and 40 turrets and a huge plane bombing me. =-p
- gothamcityprjct, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Monthly cost? It's free! For a year! sure there are level caps and such... but free? for a year? I'm pysched.
- JoeDonH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would suggest doing things in this order. Get in-game and follow the in-game tutorials. There are many sites out there with FAQ's and answers to game mechanics, but nothing beats actually doing it in person. The first impulse is usually to jump straight in and want to shoot stuff. Avoid that impulse. Take the time to do the tutorials and go to the training areas of the sanctuary and get the feel for the guns and vehicles.
When you're ready, look for a squad. On the bottom right of your screen in the HUD (Heads Up Display) there is a little "LFS" icon (Looking For Squad). It's off by default, so click on it to activate it. You can then go into battle, and someone will pick you up soon enough, or just annouce over local channels in your chatbox that you are looking for a squad by typing something like this:
/l New player looking for a squad to teach me the basics.
the /l broadcasts that message in the local area so people can see it. Get with some people that are willing to help. Just like any online game, people can be asshats, but there are a lot of subscribers who are willing and want to help. Don't spam them with every little question, but feel free to ask stuff like what's the best loadout, or how do I read the map, etc. If you like the people you're squadded with, ask them if they are inviting to their outfit. Don't accept a random outfit invitation, as there are outfits that are just looking to pad their member count. Get in an outfit with people that you get along with, and choose the outfit yourself - don't just accept any old invite, as it may make your experience negative.
Once your rolling with people you like, talking in Teamspeak, it can be quite fun. - Dahak2150, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been playing this game for 22 months now, and new games may come, but the new games will go. Planetside? Never.
- Marsman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Planetside saw a bad time with the introduction of BFR's. However, the BFR situation is much different than it was when they were introduced. Balance and numbers of BFR's are about where they should be imho. Give it another try and see what you think.
- TheAtomicYak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I guess I'm mean for dissing the games crappy code. There are Hoover Dam sized memory leaks in it, poor framerates, and lag lag lag. I played PS for over two years and there were times where I couldn't go more than an hour without the game freezing, bluescreening or otherwise taking a crap. The game engine, quit simply, sucks.
The gameplay is pretty incredible, though. That and the people I met are the only reason I stayed for two years.
I'll admit, it's a tempting offer, I'd kinda like to get back into it. Oh yeah, I'm boycotting Sony. Nevermind...... - Marsman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No. The trial is free until March 2007. The trial limits your game advancement to Battle Rank 6, and Command Rank 2. To subscribe to the game and remove these restrictions, you pay a monthly fee by either credit card or use a Sony Gamecard available at many stores.
- rzermatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1planetside used to be a good game.. like SWG, SOE screwed it up. the CSRs in game suck.. the game used to be good until BFRs came out.. but idk.. i may go back and give it a try again..
- ptbarnett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1BFRs have been nerfed to the point that they aren't a big factor in the game. The flying one has thin armor and no shield while it's airborne. The ground version can be taken down by one guy with a decimator.
- snub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1actually its not an MMO game and its bad and boring.
it is free though I'll give you that. - GotGoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes or no? I realize you need a credit card to pay after but what about the trial?
- Xtrem3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That's what she said. :)
- JoeDonH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's cool. Not everyone is going to like it, but you tried it out and decided for yourself, which is what submitting this to digg was intended for.
- BaCk1a5h, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well i finallygot it to work. And i think it is a cool idea, but I don't like it whatsoever. I like my halo and americas army much better.
- JoeDonH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can't use the reserves program to play the characters on your paid account for free. If you sign up for the Reserves program, it is a separate Station account from your other one. In other words, If you stop paying your regular account, you can't use the Reserves promotion to play the characters on that account, as they are viewed as two separate accounts.
You can, however, play the Reserves character for the full duration (with your new character in-game) of the promotion keeping in mind the Battle Rank and Command Rank limitations. - JoeDonH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, I'm happy this finally got some diggs. I'm no paid promoter, I'm just a subscriber to the game that would like to see some fresh meat in-game, and hopefully introduce some new people to a game they may have never given a chance to because of it's previous requirements of purchasing the game and entering credit card info. It's free, you don't have to enter any credit card info, and did I mention it's free?
If you load it up and think it sucks, then uninstall it. I have issues with the game as well, many in fact, but I haven't been able to find anything else to take it's place. If you've tried the game and don't like it, or are boycotting Sony, that's your thing, but I still think it's great that they've finally instituted this program for the game. The game has been losing subscribers since day one, and maybe it's dying, but free is free, and for free, there is a lot worse out there in the gaming world. - Hamma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's all a matter of Opinon. I have been playing this game since early beta and have loved every minute of it. Find a good outfit and there is absolutly nothing else like it out there now. Nobody is making it seem like its something that it's not, it's a great game and a great start for the MMOFPS genre. Everyone is entitled to their own opinons no? ;) The devs do listen to the community and have since day one, its only downfall since release is SOE's lack of support for their own title. Thus the appearance that the devs "Haven't listened to the community" It's easy to use the team as a scapegoat.
Besides - it's free why not give it a shot? What is there to lose but a bit of hard drive space for a few days if you don't like it. - Emraith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1did you read the actual post at all? the game is free now. you have complete access to the game, including the Core Combat areas that was added in an expansion pack. there is no monthly fee, you're just capped at level 6
