- thatbox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29He means that the bandwidth for, say, rendering the hill on your PS3 while your neighbor's renders the tree on the hill and your pen pal's handles the AI - that bandwidth doesn't exist yet. I'm not sure what he was smoking when he thought it would, if he ever did. Which he probably didn't.
Kutaragi: promising the moon and delivering (via microtransaction) a Big Mac, since 2006. - Simul8, on 10/12/2007, -12/+35Kutagari also expressed disappiontment in the current state of network technology, saying that advances like true real-time video over a network are still not feasible. He furthermore claimed that because of this lack of network power, the advanced and pricey hardware inside the PlayStation 3 console is "necessary."
What the hell is Sony smoking over there? "lack of network power", please! Microsoft is doing real-time video online via Live Vision right now (and real-time online games). Where's the beef Sony? - hungarianhc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10This topic is not really relevant to the keynote... I can't believe the console is a month and a half away, and nobody has seen their xbox live competitor yet...
- miketuck3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I read the article can see no mention of the 'playstations online features being revealed' i was expecting a few screenshots of the matchmaking, friends list, invites etc etc
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Where (besides talking about downloading cars for GT 4.5) did they mention anything about the PS3's online features? We've already heard all this crap before about emulating PS1 games. I see no real info on their online functionality... unless the original poster linked to the wrong article.
- Sandwiches_Time, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I just can't believe someone actually used an apostrophe correctly on a Digg headline! I kept rubbing my eyes in disbelief, but there it is! Congratulations, everyone!
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11I really laugh at people knocking Kutaragi because he thinks outside the box on things like this. If gaming companies were run by the type of people posting these thoughts on digg, we probably wouldn't even have Pong yet.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5But he promise that everything he "thinks outside the box" is in the box. The PS3 box that is.
- Kink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4But if you're not a gamer, you wouldn't buy a PS3.
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"We've already heard all this crap before about emulating PS1 games."
IIRC, at the last E3, Sony discussed PS1 emulation on the PSP. I believe this is the first time it's been mentioned for the PS3.
It makes sense as most of these games are small enough to transmit across networks easily, and it would be nice to play some titles (Legend of Mana comes to mind) that I've been unable to find. It doesn't make sense to the extent that Kutaragi is focusing so much on mindless garbage, while Microsoft and Nintendo are both showing *games*. - mtwmike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm so bored with Sony news. They still haven't moved me to want to buy a PS3.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6That had little to do with online features.
- McGrude, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Probably because there isn't one. They've had their chance of implementing a global gaming network like XBox live since the PS2 first had a network port. They've sat on their ass doing nothing about it.
I think this all boils down to the fact that Sony is a hardware company and Microsoft is a software company. - buckynekkid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"...in short, its a negative term, meaning that the visionary's dreams are unachievable pipe dreams."
I guess the countless times the word visionary is used as a compliment the user didn't know what the word meant... or maybe YOU don't know what it means. I've never heard visionary used with with a negative connotation. Going by the definition provided by the site you referenced, a visionary is:
n. a person of unusually keen foresight.
This is the meaning commonly associated with the word. I am not debating whether or not Ken is one, I'm only pointing out your obvious incorrect interpretation of the word. - nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thats kind of a weird assortment of words to capitalize. I thought it was a secret message but nope, you're just dumb.
- buckynekkid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Let me explain this to you in terms you might understand. Many words in the English language have multiple meanings. One of the things that defines a word is how it is COMMONLY used. "Visionary" is commonly not used as an insult. It's common meaning is #7, and all connotations this word stirs up stem from this definition. If I called MLK Jr. a visionary, only the idiots in the forum would think I was insulting him.
BTW: While the common definition is number seven overall, it is the first listing under the noun form of the word. - DreadPirateWes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wait what has all the bitching about the price been for the past months? No I think we made our opinions pretty well known.
- cbiz, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9Sir Stringer is not tech smart. Every time He speaks to the press he has little to say of interest about upcoming products; he says stuff like - Oh yes, PS3 has all the bells and whistles or our designers threw everything in but the kitchen sink, that cell chip is really something etc. For more of his blabber read the WSJ roundtable with Mossberg. Folding Home project? I don't think this guy could handle a folding chair....It just makes me better understand how a co. can get so derailed from a core biz like PS3...
- gwolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is it possible they aren’t planning to administer their online the way Microsoft does? Kind of hands of and leave it to the game publishers’ affair.
- billymachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't worry, we can spin any Sony press to be intensely negative. Even if the article has next to no actual content. Watch:
- wild, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You have to set it up yourself. SO no, there will be no surprise powerbills.
- acurism, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6You don't have to buy the system...
but I know next Xmas, I will! - gameboyhippo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Hey Kids, let's play PS3! We can watch Blu Ray movies and now to online shopping! Can we add any more fun features?
I've always been under the impression that games should be fun. These extra features are not fun. - DreadPirateWes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Sorry...already gave it +Lame.
- nathanfl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sure you would, remember its a computer with compelling value? At $600, why wouldn't you want one?!
- devolved, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8There's a fine line between clever and stupid.
There's also a fine line between a visionary and a dreamer. The visionary's ideas are grounded in some sort of reality and have some reasonable chance of happening.
Guess where Kutagari has moved. - rileyjt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3No kidding - shopping and maps was not the information I was looking for. Where are the online features related to GAMES?
- TonyCubed, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Folding@Home is a good idea, I just hope people have options to turn it on or off, people won't like their next powerbill if it's stuck on automaticly.
- museo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0While its nice to see that Sony are listening to their critics (HMDI now in all PS3 models) I'm still not convinced: the Wii looks more inventive at half price of PS3.
And whats with the 2 versions of GT:HD? Surely anyone that can afford a PS3 can afford a internet connection and the extra (I'm guessing) 10/20 bucks for the higher spec version of the game? (I wonder if paying the extra cost means that the downloadable content is free? Better bloody be!) - nathanfl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@buckynekkid
hey, its awesome how you skipped to the 7th definition to bolster your case. Are you a politician by any chance? For your convience, i've posted the entire definition. Hint: Read the first 6 definitions.
1. given to or characterized by fanciful, not presently workable, or unpractical ideas, views, or schemes: a visionary enthusiast.
2. given to or concerned with seeing visions.
3. belonging to or seen in a vision.
4. unreal; imaginary: visionary evils.
5. purely idealistic or speculative; impractical; unrealizable: a visionary scheme.
6. of, pertaining to, or proper to a vision.
–noun
7. a person of unusually keen foresight.
8. a person who sees visions.
9. a person who is given to audacious, highly speculative, or impractical ideas or schemes; dreamer. - nathanfl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@buckynekkid
You're still wrong. I know, that might be hard to admit, but it is the truth. No matter how hard you try to redefine visionary, making up something about "common definition", it still has a negative connotation. Next time, use prognosticator. - motorbreathx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1They're fun if you're not a gamer.
- mrsticks1982, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1read the linked article contained in this snapshot:

I was more confused as to how they are gonna take on nintendo and microsoft. It seems that sony ran out of ideas a long time ago and are playing catch-up. Currently I find sony to be taking what microsoft, Live and Nintendo, virtual console & always on, are doing and trying to make them their own "ideas". If I was a sony fan-boy I would be pissed at their complete lack of vision, innovation, creativity, etc. I am glad I am not a Sony Stockholder!

http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/14.09/sony_pr.html - TonyCubed, on 10/12/2007, -9/+8What the *****? I thought Japan etc all had like 100mbps in homes etc? And Microsoft can do all this stuff on you're standard (A)DSL/Cable connection.
- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@ gameboyhippo
you forgot to add:
Oh. Also, there are a bunch of fun games coming out for the ps3. - fallenone05, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Oh I see what you guys are doing talking ***** about Sony...I'll do it too:
Sony Sucks! I hope they go down! AAAAaahhhhh! I feel a lot of hate for that company!....
Ok, now that I got all of that anger out, let me see if I can preorder my PS3 yet... - FrankieB078, on 10/12/2007, -15/+14I give it 30 minutes before this is labeled as inaccurate because the words Sony and PS3 are in the title. Quick! Bury the story so 360/Wii people won't get their feelings hurt.
Also, there is not much mention of any online features...now that I think of it this should be labeled as inaccurate. - rowlodge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0so true...
- JFetch, on 10/12/2007, -9/+7 "The Sony CEO brought things back by discussing how game producers could possibly use the network to grab map data in real-time and then create games out of it - suggesting that you can massively reduce the costs of game development by using networked common scenery."
What the crap is he thinking? One streaming universe that Sony owns, and all the devs would set their games in that universe(paying Sony royalties of course), so all games look the same. What would be the point of all that extra space on the Blu-Ray if the game is streaming to your system?
"He also noted the use of the enormous amount of Cell chips on networked PlayStation 3s, referencing the Folding @ Home project, which searches for aberrant genes through networked supercomputer using idle CPU cycles."
Wow, he wants my PS3 to be open to other systems to use for whatever it wants. I can't wait for my first virus. - cbiz, on 10/12/2007, -13/+9playing visionary but not one anymore...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -16/+11Kutaragi is one of the dumbest "visionaries" I've ever seen. Why does this clown still have a job?
- nathanfl, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5@devolved
You might be right, except for the fact that you are totally wrong. :D
Common misconception about the definition of visionary:
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/visionary
in short, its a negative term, meaning that the visionary's dreams are unachievable pipe dreams. - Aznxmel, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1As you can see PLAYSTATION IS FOLDING. Can't belive they want us to pay 600 plus dollars for a system and now after the PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN. They have a change of HEART. even all the changes they just said at TGS im still not buying this crap out of PRINCIPLE Maybe after they do another price cut in 4 years i will pick it up but Damn Sony for Taking my Money and trying to weasle out of everything.
