- pr0t0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There are a lot of posts about how Sony BMG and SCE are two different things. Unless I'm reading Hoovers incorrectly...this is only a half-truth. They are both divisions of Sony. When you buy Sony stock, you are buying all of the divisions.
If you feel as I do that Sony should be punished, then the corporation should be punished not the division. If the rootkit had gone unnoticed, it is not inconceivable that similar tactics may have been employed in the other divisions. On a larger scale, Sony is a media company...not only providing content, but the means by which to play it. Controlling the media is of paramount concern to Sony in all its divisions.
The rootkit discovery is a lesson that needs to be felt throughout Sony. That lesson is that consumers will not tolerate this sort of treatment, and that applies not only to all of Sony's divisions, but to every other company out there and to come.
But that's not the only reason to boycott all of Sony. Sony's punishment is not the most important issue here. Our response as consumers will help define the line indicating where a company's right to control its content ends and our rights begin. Our response should echo long through history and be financially scary enough that it is never attempted again. - barnkim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I believe everything on the internet.
- HiddenForce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not that it matters, since no one's going to buy a PS3 (unless Sony shapes up), riiiiiight?
- BBX25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wasn't considering purchasing a PS3 before, and I'm not considering purchasing one now.
- ccanni1028, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has stated, ..." Did anyone notice this says SCEE and not SCEA??? The America division might still be planning on doing this.
- JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1PS3 = Sony's Last chance

If sony screwes up on the PS3, who shall I go to for games?
Microsoft = Must Die
Sony = On Mega Probation
Nintendo = Toy Manufacturer - JzLosman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0about this diggg...
@HiddenForce -- damn straight, I was thinking of getting one about 6 months ago, but I have given up on that thanks to their shaddy DRM practices and Rootkits. - MOGua, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Both have terrible processors (an Athlon 64 or Pentium 4 would rest assuredly beat it), but their GPUs are not a dissapointment."
What? Xenon and Cell both kick ass! - JzLosman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0a bit unorthodox but....
Is anyone able to get into the comments for the story on the homepage above this one
"Sony to Recall 4 million CD's with XCP DRM from Stores"
when you click the comments, it seems to just link the Technology home page. hmmmm sorry for commenting about a different digg on this one, but this is bugging me - JzLosman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sonG SUCKS~
(someone mispelled Sony as "Song" on another digg, so I adopted it as my new name for sony) - rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Rumor has it that this is just one of the symptoms of the recently discovered Sony Opium 3 virus that has been encoded on all Sony PS2 Cd's. The desired effect is that the victim would carve anything Sony and buy Sony TVs, Stereos and Cameras above and beyond their credit limit. Sony's CEO hailed the virus as a complete success but disagreed that it was a virus. He simply called this an undocumented feature that added value for the game playing public. He also noted that this feature will not be detected on the PS3 but Sony reserves it's right to enhance it's products if it benefits our bottom line. Noted social scientist say that Sony's action has left Sony's fanbois vulnerable to control by other multinational corporations and that they are ripe for manipulation. The Department of Homeland Defense refused to comment but several anonymous sources said that Sony, under presure, will the release the first PS3's to South West Asia with deployment to the US, Great Briton and Europe 3 to 4 months prior to national elections. Finally Sony stated that they will throw a huge sale of all their products offering big discounts to any one that owns a PS2, PSP or that had purchased any Sony Entertainment products in the past.
- tastypastry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I know I'll still be gettting a PS3
- tedsexton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Will be included in PS4 for sure
- RAT-Man, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good job Sony.
- mercury81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sure Sony I really believe you
- DeadlyCouncil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"have fun with your xbox360's you sony haters. xbox 360 reviews are flopping all over the internet."
uh, Proof? hasn't even come out dumb ***** jeezus give it a rest. - Bindibadgi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Does anyone seriously thing that Xbox 360 will somehow have less intrusive DRM than the one Sony mentioned? If you do you're living in a dream world..."
Nope, but if MS rep is anything to go by it'll be cracked wide open within 30 minutes :D - kris2per, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sony >:D : We promise not to put DRM on our PS3 disk!!! *wink *wink!!!
- Smokezz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, and Sony would NEVER lie...
- ag1010, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bullcrap. I don' believe them. After all they said "Our rootkit does not phone home" when indeed it does. I don't trust them.
- pinkfireball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dont know why they wouldve done it in the first place.
But for sure this is a relief for people who plan on renting ps3 games. thats one of the perks of being a console gamer instead of a pc gamer, playing game rentals instead of game demos or games that are copy-protected to your/one computer. - BBX25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"well then, just go waste your money on an xbox then"
"Waste" is a relative term. You may not like an Xbox, but my friends and I do. That's what really matters. Not that I consider your opinion valuable. - PunkFenixJT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0tehubersheezy said it best for me. "thank god".
I still am at heart a PS3 fan over the 360 fan, I just hope Sony has learned not to be retarded and that they can make the PS3 into the best system it can possibly be. - thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0good call, i'm sure they were planning on it before hell week
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0only viruses this time
- etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I never had any interest in the PS3... I've been more excited about the 360 ever since E3. This just strengthens my resolve. However, I plan on spreading the word and doing my damndest to convince friends and acquaintences to avoid Sony at all costs. This giant company needs to be taught a lesson so they know they're not impervious... so they know they can't do whatever they please. This kind of behaviour can't go unpunished.
- Cerberus047, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Screw ps3 Screw Xbox Go PC free online play (free games, illegally of course) and if you hate ms you can use linux yes linux is not growing huuge game wise but it is still growing
- logost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Xbox 360 - halo and um...more game hopefully , good online format, but fee required, normal dvd possible hd-dvd in future...will it require new purchase?
PS3 - games... which one, online is up to publisher, blu-ray standard
Lets see halo fun but not online I just let my sucker friends buy it and play it at their house. Socom(favorite) and other games that do or will appeal to me.
So I'm down with PS3 but not the first version who buys the first version... and did anyone see in USA today like about a week ago saying xbox will come out 3 months ahead of its competitors... probably just morans. - ChewyBass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I for one have reconsidered and will not be purchasing a PS3 or anything from Sony. With Christmas around the corner, I'm not even going to get PS2 games for for my kids, instead, they'll be getting a 360. Until it hurts them in the wallet, they'll keep sneaking this stuff onto us in hopes it won't be discovered.
- cheifchuck0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The PS3 disks will undoubtedly contain some form of DRM. Maybe this "geek website" could get that straight. Sony promised not to use the root-kit software on their new disks. But copy protection, a.k.a. DRM will be there.
- clevershark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does anyone seriously thing that Xbox 360 will somehow have less intrusive DRM than the one Sony mentioned? If you do you're living in a dream world...
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0finally, there's some confirmation. I knew that it wouldnt be a big deal, and that Sony wouldn't implement the tech in the PS3
By the way, vincenzo, stop being a ***** immature prick by calling people fags - BBX25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Yes i do mean waste. xbox has far less processing power and GPU power. this is like dreamcast all over again, but MS wont let it go down because they have too much money in this."
If you really wish for me to take you seriously, then please post some unbiased evidence supporting your claims. Apparently you've accepted Sony's propaganda, designed to push consoles, as fact, rather than the upmost fiction. Both have terrible processors (an Athlon 64 or Pentium 4 would rest assuredly beat it), but their GPUs are not a dissapointment. But having full-eye-candy means nothing if you have a terrible gaming library to go with it.
It all rests in the hands of the gaming developers. Yes, I admit, I like my eye candy as much as the guy beside me, but gameplay is much more important. I would much rather play a 2D-Good-Game than a 3D-Bad One. We Love Katamari, as an example, has terrible graphics, but it's gameplay and style make up for that muchly.
And CFly, please do post these reviews for my reading. Just saying that "Xbox 360 reviews" are "flopping" won't make me take you seriously.
Enjoy your PS3s, Xbox haters. ;) - FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They won't have this type of DRM. That doesn't mean the PS3 won't have restrictive DRM. The title of this article and the content of the statement is totally misleading. Sony will say anything short of outright lying to sell the PS3.
Oh wait, they will outright lie. Unless of course someone has managed to get the PS2 to render Toy Story graphics in real time. - craterburnsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Not that it matters, since no one's going to buy a PS3 (unless Sony shapes up), riiiiiight? -HiddenForce"
Yep, I'm buying one the day it comes out. And i'm not even a fanboy, so yes, there are alot of people still getting them. - FRAGaLOT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What's the point of having rootkits on their own hardware of the PS3? the PS3 will have it's own built-in DRM (like windows will) they don't need to have it on their game discs and infect their own hardware like a virus.
Whatever.. so does this mean we can pirate PS3 games? - Elxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm certainly glad about this, that would've been really stupid. I am certainly looking forward to all three of the next-gen consoles, so it's always nice to know that the PS3 (admittedly my favorite, followed closely by the 360 and Rev) will still give us the opportunity to share our games. Like I said, it would be really stupid if they did do this stupid DRM crap. Just make the security on the console itself better if you're worried about pirated copies
- zenghost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0whew. bout time they noticed it was a stupid idea. now, back to vista! lol
- soyverde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ugh...I want to dig it, but the title is so far off the truth. As several people have pointed out, the games will certainly have DRM, they just won't have regional encoding. The only thing I have to say for this is "about damn time." This needs to be done with DVDs as well, there is no excuse for having staggered releases in this day and age...this is only kept around to price fix in various regions.
- BBX25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now, I'm pondering what would have happened if I had admitted that I was considering a PS3 far into it's lifespan.
The PS3 is a formidable opponent to the Xbox 360, I will gladly admit. However, Sony has had a bad track record for advertising something great, then slowly eliminating it's features until what was once amazing, is rather dissapointing. In addition to the DRM crisis I've heard from Sony, only injures their hopes of me purchasing a PS3.
I have been thoroughly impressed with my Xbox. I may only have a mediocre library of only five games for it, but I enjoy every single last one of them. The Xbox may not be top notch by today's standards, but that doesn't make ramming a bus into the arc de triomphe (Midtown Madness 3) any less fun. - clevershark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well I'm not going to buy a PS3, not unless Sony can meaningfully demonstrate between now and then that it got the message. I will not buy any games for the PS2 in the meantime either (because they get a cut as distributors).
It seems to me that otherwise Sony has absolutely no incentive not to try and f*ck everyone over again. - neocitron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i like how sony screws up with the rootkit... then microsoft says "we'll remove it!!! don't worry!!!" like they're any better... hah.. both companies are crap.
however my money goes to the 360, simply because of Halo 3 and the online. - AbaraiRenji, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0whatever, Nintendo all the way!
- Remmy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It is funny how people like to complain about this stuff, whether it be MS, Sony, or any other company, yet 90% of those complaining are doing it while using said companies software/hardware.
- jiub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What I want to know is why did they patent this at all? Is this going to be implemented in future movies or CD's?
- Erroneus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now they need to fix their uninstaller which is one big security risk!
http://www.digg.com/gaming/Sony_Confirms_It:_No_DRM_For_Future_PS3_Disks - BBX25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd consider Nintendo, but I'd firstly have to see their selection of games (seldom, if any, games have been claimed to be in development), and I'd have to experience their controller system first hand. The remote based system seems like a risky crap-shoot to steal customers from Sony and Microsoft, in my opinion. It does have a high probability of being implemented wrong, but it does have a possibility that it will indeed be a revolutionary control system. :)
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Good.
- pr0t0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Oh, so I'm just supposed to take you back? I'm supposed to believe that even though you lied and cheated before, you won't this time?
All of my friends said they saw this coming. They said, "Dude, you're being treated like garbage...have some self-respect". And you know, I'm sorry to say they are right. I'm better than that. I deserve more. I'm going to find a technology provider that wants the same things out of life that I do...mutual respect, and a DRM-free existence.
Sorry Sony. You crossed a line that you can't un-cross. You can promise you'll be faithful, but you've betrayed my trust and I don't think you can ever earn it back.
I'm putting all of your stuff in a box and I'll leave it at your doorstep. I need to make room for a company that is going to love me back.
Bitch! - ThomasAnderson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Although I think PS3 is cool and all, I'm definetely going the 360. I knew they wouldnt be able to keep up with all the crap they were saying. (DAMN ASIANS)
