- truspector, on 10/12/2007, -9/+180If the Wii's motion sensing is a gimmick, why did Sony "try" to copy it at the last minute. I say try, because compared to the Wii, their implementation is garbage.
- BrainRecall, on 10/12/2007, -8/+134A novelty? Who was it that said the Wii's motion sensing controller was just a "gimmick?"
- swoosh_bnd, on 10/12/2007, -6/+120Sony doesn't believe in gimmicks, just listen to their 2006 E3 press conference where they said that and announced the rear view mirror with the PSP and Ridge Racer.
- truspector, on 10/12/2007, -9/+98@sdraw
The PS3 may have sold every console at launch, but ebay sales have been extremely disappointing considering how strong the 360 sold last year above cost on ebay through and after christmas. Look for yourself, ~15,000 (almost 10% of U.S. launch) are still listed and barely selling above retail price. I don't consider this a very strong showing. - betterth, on 10/12/2007, -8/+78It's amazing... how far can this company stick it's head up it's own ass. I mean look, the Wii is outselling the PS3 left and right. The DS and the GBA are outselling everything on the market. Nintendo has the top 3 selling consoles in the market, and is probably selling all three at a profit.
Sony has one manufactured, expensive and sold at a huge loss console and a miserable failure of a portable.
They really need to wake up and smell the Nintendo-domination. I'm no fan boy -- i don't have a DS, GBA or Wii, but I can recognize supremacy when I see it. - floppyparty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+58I remember back in the 80's when people said video games were a novelty.
- shadus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+58Oh, I'll give PS3 one thing.
It's price isn't a gimmick. Wii has one advantage over ps3. You can afford to go... you know I heard x game is great... I got a bit of spare cash, ill grab a wii. You ain't doing that with a ps3... that thing is stupid expensive... and likely the reason wii will outsell them several fold in the long run. - stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+50Sony just can't get their ego in check. You'd think after all their recent troubles they would try some humility for a change.
- Konrad9, on 10/12/2007, -2/+48PS3 is not the Dreamcast 2.
Dreamcast did not deserve to fail. - Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -11/+52Well... using one definition of the word the Wiimote is definitely a gimmick and the Wii is full of gimmicks. It just happens to be gimmick isn't necessarily a bad thing. =P
- Hybride, on 10/12/2007, -6/+45Sony had it, and Sony lost it.
Congratulations Nintendo.
I, myself would personally choose the Xbox 360 :) - OneHump, on 10/12/2007, -3/+39I agree that the idea behind the Wii controller is very novel, and that's not a bad thing. A novelty? No way. Nintendo hit the jackpot by catering the mainstream, where the real dollars are.
While the PS3 is a technically superior offering, it serves a narrow market and can be called a "niche product". Would you rather be novel or niche?
The good news is that we all benefit from the competition, regardless of who sells more units. - joel8x, on 10/12/2007, -3/+39People said the same thing about the DS, and that turned out to be the stronger portable. Sony forgot the core of the gaming, which involves fun.
- modsuperstar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+39If it was so gimmicky then why did Sony try and patent come similar motion sensing technology a couple of months ago? You could argue the PS3 and PSP are gimmicky given their everything and the kitchen sink approach to building consoles. This is just sour grapes on Sony's part.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33I guess that's the go-to tactic when you're getting your ass handed to you - attempt to belittle or trivialize the competition. I think I gave that childish behavior up in 3rd grade.
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33You can chose more than one console, you know. The 360 and the Wii complement each other nicely.
- BuddyDoQ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31Not Dreamcast, Saturn. Dreamcast was affordable.
Xbox360 is to PS1 as PS3 is to Saturn.
Wii is in it's own freaking ballpark playing a different game; where everybody wins. - sdrawkcaB, on 10/12/2007, -46/+74Not to support either side, but both the Wii and the PS3 have pretty much sold every console manufactured. It's a matter of how fast they can be produced, not who has sold more, as every single one is selling. Nintendo has manufactured more so they've sold more. Which is better can't be determined by this.
- leoedin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29HAHA
Hey Sony! Look what happened to the last thing you called a gimmick...
What was that? Oh yeah, the DS
http://blogcritics.org/archives/2005/08/29/033218.php
wow - the DS touchscreen gimmick - won't last, huh.
http://www.game-science.com/data/mcreate.php
Close to 5 million DS Lites sold this year.
How many PSP's? 1.4 million.
Wow - check out the gimmick thats outselling you consistantly by 3.6 times!
And the DS Lite is available everywhere, so you can't blame it on supply this time!
The sales this week are even more dismal for the PSP
6x fewer PSP's this week than DS Lites - SkippyDoorknob, on 10/12/2007, -6/+32the controllers do
- idig, on 10/12/2007, -9/+34Good thing the PS3 doesn't use batteries -- one less thing for Sony to have to recall.
- Homunculiheaded, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25don't talk about dreamcast like that! *sniff*
- hannahmar, on 06/11/2009, -1/+25These Sony reps. just seem to be digging a deeper hole for themselves.
- GliTCH82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24It's official: Sony talks too much. The sad part is they don't know when to stop.
- betterth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22I don't know about "always were crap". I still love my PS1 and PS2 very much.
- gamemaker, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25Sony: "fun is a gimmick. What you REALLY want is more sophisticated pixel shaders, right? Hell with fun."
- turbomog007, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20don't you ever belittle of the glory that was dreamcast
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21"it's more of a novelty." Is Sony THAT out of touch with their consumers? They really think people are going to buy something for $250 as a novelty? Do they think we're all bloody rich? Sorry, a novelty to me ain't worth more than $20... and even that is a stretch. Bah, Sony's been making me mad lately.
- RPharazon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18You got it all wrong.
DS vs PSP = Wii vs PS3
The DS has neat innovation (touch screen and double screens) while the PSP has higher-definition games, and the graphics are better.
The Wii has neat innovation (motion sensing controller, games to take advantage of that) while the PS3 has higher-definition games, and the graphics are better.
Now, the DS clearly won over the PSP.
That clearly shows that, although the graphics whores are louder, the fun-lovers always win. - Vishap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Even if it was a novelty to some buyers, Nintendo still rakes in the profit. Me, I'd like a Wii and a PS3, but it'll take a few price drops for me to be able to afford the PS3.
And good for Nintendo with the Wii. It's nice to see them (looking like they'll) do well after the N64 and the Cube didn't do too too well. Remember, they revived video games in '85, they deserve to stick around for awhile.
Which isn't to say I don't hope the PS3 does well too. If it does, I'm interested in seeing how that affects the prominence of Blue Ray.
*laughs upon discovering that Wii isn't in the Digg dictionary - Aldrenean, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Sure the Wii is a novelty. Novelty comes from the Roman root nov, meaning new. The Wii does something new by getting the gamer immersed in the gameplay to such a degree. On the other hand, the PS3 (and the X360) are both just gimped computers. Everyone and their extended family has their own computer these days, and for about $200 you can pick up a decent graphics accelerator and some RAM, which is enough for any computer bought in the last year or two to run the majority of games today. The PS3 and X360 aren't the Wii's competition, they're the PC's, a fight equivalent to a car racing a bike.
In addition, the Wii has the potential to be bought by every PC gamer as well, since they can't get the Wii experience from their PC, while no PC gamer would buy one of the other consoles unless they had money they wanted to throw around. - totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Jesus, I hope everyone who picks up any video game console does so because its a novelty. Does Sony think there is any other purpose to video games?
- dpcamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15So they figure they'll insult their competitors and it will make consumers want to buy a product that they can't even supply??
- sintaxi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Funny how Nintendo is the only one of the two with a tripple A title at launch.
- xavierh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15do we actually care what Sony "think"s about anything at this point?
- Aldrenean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14@23r17i05o42n & 42nddegree:
If you don't want to play the Wii because you think you'll look like an idiot, than you obviously take yourself to seriously to have any fun at all. - NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15@staticneuron -
Yeah, because SO many people are buying the DS to play GBA games. /sarcasm
Did you forget about NSMB? What about Nintendogs? Software is selling big-time for the DS. Hardware is still selling. I was in Target yesterday and they were totally sold out of black, white AND pink DS Lites. That says something.
It's a console. It's got good games. People are buying and playing. It has clout in the console market. And the PSP is relying on astroturf movements to advertise their lagging portable offering. The DS is a significant player. Don't fool yourself. - SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13And you can get a Wii60 for about the same price as a PS3. The best of both worlds with none of the PS3's weaknesses.
- Ninofs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Novelty?
Tell that to my friends 40+ year old relatives who played a wii then said
"That is fun, I want to get one."
Many people who have never had interest in games before are considering the wii. That is the genius of nintendo's business plan. If they interest people who used to think of games as stupid they have a much large market. - joel8x, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15It seems like Sony's biggest threat is the Wii and the 360 put together (Wii60), because you can buy both for the price of the PS3.
- darkzealot89, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14[ U.S. retailers estimate that nearly 1.5 million Wiis will be sold before Christmas, about twice as many as the PS3. Sony's response? "We feel very confident that the PlayStation fan is going to wait until they can get a PlayStation 3...If they do pick up a Wii, it's as more of a novelty." ]
Translation:
*****, that Nintendo thing is kicking our ass... Quick, lets try to make it look bad by bashing it! Yeah that will work! But what about our loyal fans buying a Wii, we will just pretend they are under a "trance" and will pick up a PS3 for only 599.99 dollars as soon as possible. I sure hope this blue ray stuff works as well as UMD!
/sarcasm - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17I wonder if the fanboys will sink with the ship...
- Konklone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Sony's right: the Wii *is* a novelty. That's the Wii's best quality. Novel just means 'new'.
There is nothing novel about the PS3 at all. And this is why Sony is acting like someone repressing severe jealousy. - spinlock96, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Sony and MS compete to innovate on the sustaining technology of graphics and computational power whereas 3rd place Nintendo has to do something desperate ("gimmicky").
Time and time again we see that growing the market is often the best solution - growing the market for gamers in this case instead of sustaining the market of gamers, has vaulted Nintendo to current success. The company that grows the market instead of competing for market share can turn the tables.
Incidentally, this is great marketing as anyone who has touched the Wiimote has anecdotally become an product evangelist to the un-gamed. I know that's how it worked with my wife and the DS... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14For $600 we should be enjoying that now, not 4 years from now.
I wouldn't buy a PS3 and tell my friends HEY! Just imagine how much fun I'll be having in 4 years, chumps! - duanemoody, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12wow, denial sure is a big place! Sony has gotten lost there!
- mt066, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I imagine these guys are just trying to maintain confidence with their shareholders, especially since this was originally reported by the Wall Sreet Journal. They have to provide SOME explanation to their shareholders as to why their competition is doing so well. And they're sure not going to say "...cause our product sucked."
- Arkonnan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10> The DS and the GBA are outselling everything on the market.
Look at the Japanese market. The Nintendo DS is selling like crazy over there to this day. It's so popular that no one seems to be able to find any in stock. They sell as quickly as shop clerks can unpack the things. It's mind boggling how popular the DS is over there. - Lobut, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14It's not a novelty if it changes the face of gaming.
- wordfan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I'm shocked, shocked, that a PR person would say something mildly disparaging about the competition. If you'll excuse me, I just made an astounding discovery about the color of the sky!
