- thegreyfox, on 10/12/2007, -6/+26CALL OUT TO OTHER BLOGGERS!
If you plan to attended anything to do with Sony at GDC, PLEASE CANCEL IT!
It will only be a matter of time that the will do the same to you.... - codemonkey420, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24That's pretty sad.
a) validated the rumor
b) pissed off a high-traffic blogger
c) community is already pissed at them
d) digg this, maybe diggnation will grab it and bring it to the "light" - designerbradr, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21Digg this story to support Kotaku's noble decision. And call out Sony on a terrible attempt to strongarm blog sites into timed news and good company PR.
- zizzy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Considering the massive amount of bad Sony news, no news at all might actually be benefiting Sony.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16isn't there some saying about "burning bridges"
- username9000, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14A combination of mii's and achievements...another original idea from the team behind the PS3.
Sounds like a rumor that could end up being right on considering the Sony reaction. - laterthanyou, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16Sony makes yet another mistake. I guess the rumor was true.
- destructoid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11That's surreal. Well, I guess we now all know what Phil Harrison's keynote at GDC will be about.
Idea to crazy PR guy: Ask Phil to show us Killzone instead. - TheDonNMikeShow, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13Sony I bought a PS3 day one, but my loyalty is fading, I love Kotaku.
- JonesJohnson, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12First they blueball us with all the PS3 promises from a few E3's ago (CGI Killzone 2 anyone?), and now they blackball blog sites for reporting news/rumors that could actually be positive for the PS3 community. C'mon Sony
- bcos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Bloggers really do need to take a stand and show that they are real journalists, and you can't ***** with them so easily.
- norsehawk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Just when you think sony can't go any lower, they find a manhole cover to open up and jump down into.
Way to stick to your guns Kotaku. - funnydale, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10So, let me get this straight? A news site reports the FIRST good bit of news concerning the PlayStation 3 in months, and Sony go's ape ***** over it?
This proves my theory that Dave Karraker is the secret freakish offspring of Gilligan and the Skipper. - Razster, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12Wonderful, I wonder how much more damage Sony can deal out before they're out of Business... I've stopped buying anything computer related from Sony and switched to Samsung.
- Waterispoison, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9@Mac
They are not shocked. They acknowledged that they understood the consequences and published it anyways making it very clear that it was rumor and had no official validity. I truly believed that Sony is totally losing out on this deal. They have just lost official coverage on a major gaming blog and other blogs may realize how poorly Sony treats the media. - PhoenixAvatar2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Actually, Threepio, Sony provided very little. Most of the post was made up with rumors and old quotes from Sony. Had Sony actually provided early information to Kotaku, they would have had to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement, which I believe is a legally binding contract. If Sony had just dropped the normal "no comment" then all that would have happened was Kotaku posting an I-told-you-so about how they predicted PS Home a week early, but now that Sony's gone to such drastic action, PS Home can be considered all but confirmed, Sony's rep takes yet another hit and Kotaku has most likely netted itself a bump in pageviews.
- EochaidRiata, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Hey Sony, if I wanted a RSS feed of your PR-approved ***** I would be reading press.sony.com, not Kotaku. Attempting to bully bloggers is pathetic. You thought they cared more about attending your cigar parties than their own integrity, and they called your bluff. Would you try the same tactic with the Wall Street Journal? I doubt it.
- modifiedbears, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Sony really needs to end up in a distant 3rd this time around so they can learn their lesson.
- pheonix2og, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6The NDA? There is no Non-Disclosure agreement issue here.
"they didn't consider for a second that this would piss Sony off." - Well, yes, they knew Sony would not be happy by the stern warning given them by Sony before the stupid blackballing.
Read the whole story before you post and don't assume you know what is being discussed when you do not.
The whole issue here is that Kotaku editor Brian Crecente heard a rumor and posted said rumor AS an unsubstantiated rumor that likely was not even true. Because they posted this rumor, Sony then Blackballed them as if Kotaku were the only gaming blog posting stories about Sony that may not be true or may simply be rumors.
Why did Sony have to make an example out of Kotaku? What confidence or NDA was so breached that Sony had to take some action against Kotaku? Rumors (that are true as it seems this one may turn out to be) only help in boosting the "word-of-mouth" and popularity a system or company receives, so why is Sony so angered by Kotaku's posting of a POSITIVE RUMOR (it wasn't as if Kotaku hinted that Sony will soon be responsible for the deaths of hundreds of underpaid workers - random and untrue example of a negative rumor, so please do not blackball me, Sony!)?
Your comment makes about as much sense as Sony's actions during the past year - what joint did you collectively puff on? - m3mnoch, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8that might be because this is a sony thread. you might try looking at something that has to do with apple if you want to see people bashing on apple.
m3mnoch. - ocanica, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Bizzaro Sony says : "All bad publicity is good publicity"
- freakon, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11How stupid can sony become? Guess and win an extremly hard-to-find PS3!!!!
- tanawts, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9First Sony shoe-horns a poor attempt on cashing in on the montion controlls of the Wii. Now they are trying to copy both 360's 'acomplishments' and the Wii's Mii's. On top of that they are trying to incorporate 'myspace' like elements into the package. The alure of the myspace phenomonon is a blogspace for the last gen 'camwhores' and being able to find old friends that you haven't seen in years. Sony's tanking and they are trying to start bolting really bad solutions on to make it a viable product. You've been trying to trick us with very lame viral media attempts at advertising. You've been shilling us for years with your bad hardware failures (diskmen, ps1's ps2's with lasers that die within a year or two) It's time for you're empire's cracks to show. More expensive does not = better.
- IdanE, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@RAT-Man(Also known as Mr. Fanboy): Kotaku is not a fan site, or a Sony sponsored medium. They are a news site (or blog), that works according to journalistic standards. When there's a rumor, they post it as that. There were numerous rumors published, regarding all major companies, and as long as they make sure that the readers are told that it's a rumor, it's within their right.
Companies often have NDAs (non disclosure agreements) with such entities, the idea being that they tell journalists what's happening, showing them demos, etc. and in return, the journalists don't break the news before the agreed date. In this case, Kotaku simply got hold of a rumor, and ran it. I am certain that, had Sony offered them info in exchange for an NDA, Kotaku would have agreed.
You do not threaten the press. It's just not done. You say "no comment", or try to offer an exclusive if you want to keep the lid on a story, but you don't threaten the press!
I used to like Sony systems, and Sony in general. but over the last couple of years they've become an entity that I can't stand. from root kits, threatening (and then black balling) the press, thinking that the public is stupid (according to Sony, the PS3 "shortage" will ease up in a couple of months - I haven't heard of to many people that have trouble finding one). This thing really pisses me off. People need to realize that a company is supposed to do things for us, and not the other way
***** Sony, they need to realize that this is the 21st century, and that people don't like them anymore. Until they start trying to please consumers, just don't support them. And perhaps email them and let them know that you will not buy their products as long as they continue to belittle us as a group - mbthompson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Sony has to be the most contemptible corporation in existence right now. What if it were PC World, Computer Shopper, or even ArsTechnica or Engadget? What would be really cool was if the other big tech/gamer blogs black balled Sony and refused to show up to their events or give them coverage. Will it happen? Probably not, but one can dream of comeuppance.
- peacebyanymeans, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6It's not that what Sony asked that pisses me off, it's how they did it.
The smart thing would be to just ask them not to post it WITHOUT threatening them.
The SMARTER thing to do is to just do what MS and Nintendo do best. "We do not respond to rumors." - MaxSteele, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Kotaku is a blog. They post information as they receive it. Sony asked them not to post the story. That is Sony attempting to control information. When is it *ever* a good thing when a company attempts to control information?
Will this hurt Kotaku? Of course not. People will still go there for whatever news and information they post.
Will this hurt Sony? It can. We'll find out soon.
Who screwed up? I hope I don't have to point that out.... - 111mike200, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I'm starting to think Sony are deliberately out to get themselves eliminated from the console wars and create their beloved Media Hub. They are lapping up bad press atm, and this proves it. The PlaystationHome might be a rip off of the Mii's (I'd actually call their avatars PS-Miis I'm afraid) but at least it was some good news.
Alas, they had to poop all over that one... Sony, you are not God, you cannot rule the console war this round just because you did last time and you cannot manipulate the press. Burn. And burn soon. - rushoffailure, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Actually it's more like:
1) Be a hand, and get told you're going to be bitten
2) Hand gets bitten
3) 599 US Dollars
4) Profit - mikelimtw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2liquilife - the issue here is not about how or what Sony gave Kotaku. They didn't do it to be charitable. They thought - wrongly it would seem - that they could use this to buy Kotaku and have them tow the company line. Unfortunately, many gaming sites have been bought by Sony's PR machine, so I give Kotaku major props for standing their ground and taking the ethical high road.
Ever heard of something called the First Amendment right to Freedom of Speech?
Sony has no right to decide what others can or cannot say unless the informaiton was released by Sony under NDA embargo. Then there are legal issues involved. But this blog was stated to be a rumor, and it did not come from Sony. Sony can either put up the standard "We don't comment on rumors" or just plain shut up.
And what did Sony make such a big fuss over? Phil's GDC annoucement of Mii's + Achievements; which only further shows how far Sony has slipped from the position of innovator to just plain copycat. Neither of the ideas are new, although I have no doubt that Dave K. will try to spin doctor this into more Sony Innovation - like the SIXAXXIS motion sensing controller. RIGHT.
Anyway, it's clear that Sony is currently on lifesupport. I'm not a MS or Nintendo Fanboy. I am an equal opportunity gamer. I have a PSX, a PS2, PS2 mini, XBOX, XBOX 360, and GameCube; and I've built more high-end PC gaming rigs than I care to count. I believe every platform has something different to offer in terms of gaming experience.
What is abundantly clear is that Sony has lost it's way; and until they figure out that their customers can't be treated like trash and lied to because it in some way benefits Sony, then I'll vote with my money. My next purchase will be a Wii or the new black XBOX 360 with HDMI and 120GB HDD. But it sure as hell won't be a PS3. - R22W13, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Out. F-ing. Rageous.
I applaud Kotaku for not letting Sony push them around. They gave Sony an opportunity to say the rumor was false and please don't run it. Instead, they said no comment and tried to bully the bloggers. Well, the joke's on them.
I think we should all show up at GDC with "Free Kotaku" signs. - jbciii, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I'm dissapointed in Sony.
I think Kotaku has a right to publish whatever rumors they get. Tuaw publishes rumors, and so does infendo. - goduke06, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Kudos to Kotaku for posting the story anyway.
- Dauntae, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6This is absolutely ridiculous that anyone here would defend Sony. Sony is acting like a spoiled brat if we cant play baseball our way then we are taking back the ball. Anyone who stands up for this kind of behavior is standing up for corporate censorship of our news.
- Zoglog, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Whatever Kotaku, I'm suprised Sony even cares about a blog in the first place. You guys are just lucky it isn't Apple you're dealing with or else you would've gotten more than a nice letter. They probably would've forced you to reveal your sources and threaten to sue you.
Stop whining and respect the wishes of the company and let them announce thier damn crap when they feel like it. - TheDonNMikeShow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why has this story not shown up in the most popular section of Digg Gaming or the front page, I think something is screwed up, I have been monitoring this story all night and the Joystiq response is being listed but this much higher Dugg story is not?
- Vision2098, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11) Cut a hole in a box.
- imasuperhero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Kotaku always honors their non-disclosure agreements from what I've seen. Take for example when they previewed the full copy of God of War II. They told us they had it, but can't comment on the game for two more days. There are plenty of other examples to this effect. Sony is just being silly. As far as fanboyism, it just appears that way when nothing great comes from the company for a while. Look at Nintendo for the last ten years, it appeared everyone hated them, but it was just a lack of the greatness they once had.
- kookiekrook, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I have boycotted Sony a long time ago, especially after their nice little root kit.
- reccy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Sony just keep losing points with the gamers this generation. Soon they're have digged a big enough hole to lie in... and die.
- cockmaster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2max steele you sir are a douche.
companies have a righ to control company secrets and intellectual property.
it doent hurt controlling their own info since they're releasing it soon anyway ans want to surprise people
but hey, when tryin to explain this to a bunch of emotional sony hating nerds, it falls on deaf ears. - MoeB, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5i guess sony is trying to copy apple. apple does this all the time to bloggers! they sue em and take em to court.
- dagospelman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Although Sony may have been a bit heavy-handed here, Kotaku seriously couldn't expect to receive preferential treatment in terms of info out of Sony, without giving something back. Many companies tell journalists about upcoming launches if they agree to embargo any stories until the launch is actually made.
I think Sony made a reasonable request, and Kotaku shouldn't bitch about Sony's reaction. - macaddct1984, on 10/12/2007, -10/+10I'm not a Sony fan, but for this one I'm really not so quick to blame Sony. The way I see it is:
Sony was kind enough to give Kotaku exclusives, a privilege that Kotaku earned. (Yes, it's PR for Sony as well)
Sony asked Kotaku not to publish this story and warned Kotaku that if they did, they would lose their exclusives with Sony.
Kotaku went ahead and published the story anyway, ergo Kotaku loses Sony's exclusives.
Was this the best thing for Sony to do? Probably not. Is it completely ridiculous and absurd on Sony's part? Absolutely not.
If Kotaku felt that their journalistic integrity and moral obligations were for publishing the story, that's perfectly fine, but they shouldn't be shocked when they find out their actions have consequences. - AvalonDrew, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah, WTF is with that? This should be way up in the top 10, but it's not.
- Bruny, on 04/03/2008, -0/+0Inspite of their mistakes they make all they can to improve their positions on game business.
http://rssnewsdigest.com/search_feeds.php?q=Sony - mikelimtw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just when you think Sony couldn't possibly shoot themselves in the foot anymore. Why? Because they've already lost all the toes on each foot, and each foot is already a bloody stump. Sony, in their infinite wisdom, decides that above the ankles they still have knees and gonads to spare.
This just goes to prove my feelings and the feelings of many fellow gamers. Sony is a sinking wreck. They will do anything - lie, cheat, steal - to positively spin doctor everything while dumping on their competitors and their customers.
Note to Sony PR People - you guys are teh suck. You should all go back to Business 101 and Marketing 101.
Note to Sony Executives - you guys are teh suck. You should all go back to Business 101 and Ethics 101.
If the day comes that SCEA actually tells the truth, behaves in an ethical manner and actually shows they care about their customers, then I know I'm having a bad dream and someone should just slap me and wake me up. Way to go Sony!! You're nothing if not consistent. - rainblood, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2e-drama is over. moving on.
