- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -7/+40If Sony getting online downloading is being "stuck in 2006" then Wii's online functionality is stuck in 1995. Don't be a fanboy - remember that all of these are developing consoles and they'll all be more or less equal in the future (that is unless Nintendo sticks with that stupid friend code thing).
- mrpizza, on 10/12/2007, -6/+35and remember the 360 took about the same time, if not more, to come out with the update to allow background downloads.
- wild, on 10/12/2007, -8/+34I think its a little early to call Sony the underdog. Consider them the New England Patriots. Overall, great for gaming, but occasionally they have a bad year.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24when did Sony lose the rights to the PS2?
- Zamfir, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25How does it "seem better" exactly? The console is priced appropriately for what you get and how long it's been in the market. In fact, it costs Sony considerably more to produce than what they sell it for. If they're selling consoles at a faster rate than they did with the PS2, then I think Sony should be pleased so far. If you don't want/use the extended functionality of the PS3, then you obviously can buy other consoles. For those that dig the PS3 feature set, they're not complaining about the price :)
- skunkworker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19This is allready old news. This morning the v1.6 update was released and now it works great during games, also the folding @ home is cool to just leave on while away, also you can set it to automatically turn on after 10 min of inactivity
- AntBing, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22Sony sold over 200 million PS1/PS2 consoles. There is no way in hell they can be considered underdogs in the console gaming industry. You could say that the PS3 itself is the underdog console in this generation, but Sony as a whole is not an underdog.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17THank you zamfir
stop complaing about the damn price, blu-ray + wifi + larger HDD + HDMI (yes the picture is superior to component, I've used both from my cable box to the same TV) + free internet (granted it isn't as good....yet)
the blu-ray alone is well worth another $200 bucks (as proven by microsofts HD-DVD addition) and with all the other stuff too if you don't think so I'm willing to call you crazy - swaggadocio, on 08/20/2008, -4/+18The Folding@Home client is a cool idea. Now just make this thing cheaper. It comes out in the UK tomo for the princely sum of $850 (60gig).
- mavranos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14This is good. I hope they keep improving the online features. Sony really needs to work double time on polishing their tarnished images asap.
Like the above poster says- once Bluray players hit the magic price point (which happens quick these days) the PS3 will HAVE to drop in price and have killer games and online service to be attractive. - NaziHatinChimp, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18I wish the 360 would shut the ***** up with it's "online capability" while I'm trying to watch a movie.
Do I really need to know that some dude with a funny screen name that I added to my friends list while I was drunk at 3 in the morning playing Ghost Recon is online while I'm watching Borat with my Girlfriend? No. - DarkStalker, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15No, it wasn't. You clearly didn't read the original article or this one.
- jacksons98, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Actually it's these drops that Sony is banking on. Give it a year, they are aggressively cutting costs right now, trying to get to 65nm for cell, emotion chip handled thru emulation, and the drastic price drop for Blu-ray diodes. It's the price you pay for putting cutting edge technology into the box, but in a year it will be a different story.
- Quinion, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13How can u be forth place with 3 consoles.....Sony can't be behind themselves...Anyways, even though i don't own one yet, i would love to be able to afford a ps3, espically now that they've proven their going to update their system continually to keep up with the pacing of the world. I dont see this as a war of consoles, because as a gamer, its a win-win-win situation, with my 360 getting better games everyday, the wii getting more inovative, and the ps3 coming out with really high quality games
- anonatron, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Hmmm, I remember when I bought my first DVD player for $400 and thought I would never see them under $100. Last week I bought my niece a DVD player for $15...
- Ajajadude, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11What people forget, too, is that while the PS3 does cost more than the 360, it comes with more built-in hardware you have to buy separately for the 360. By the time I add onto my 360 what I got with my PS3, they'll end up having cost me the same amount of money.
It's somewhat of a win/lose situation for PS3 owners in this case, I guess. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Sucks to have overvalued currency sometimes.
- alx242, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12And that was wrong too!
- JasonMD, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15I guess good things can come from being the underdog. Good things for the consumer!
Sony really has to be careful with everything they do. They could be cocky and ignore the consumer for a while because of there lead but now they have to actually take us into consideration.
Some might say that they could fix the issues quicker instead of stalling but let's be honest improvement is a step in the right direction.
Too expensive for most, including me, but in a year that probably will change. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"Sony has embraced the strategy of telling people what they want instead of listening to what they want."
No, that's Nintendo. That's what I've been saying about Nintendo for decades.
"Gamers don't want online" "Gamers don't want RPGs" etc etc.
And drop the effing MIDI already!
Sony and MS give me what I want - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"I took 360 a year BUT Sony should have seen what we wanted and copied it right out of the gate. This year head start ***** has got to stop"
You really have no idea about engineering (hardware and software) don't you. You also know that there are a finite amount of hours in the day as well don't you?
And with all your bold words I bet you still haven't gotten around to cleaning your bedroom. - anonatron, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13I am glad to see that sony is listening to the masses and making changes, now all that remains to be seen is how they will get out of the pricing mess they have gotten themselves into. Soon standalone blu ray players will near the $100 range and it will be tough to sell the system as an "inexpensive" blur ray player.
- AntBing, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10So Sony has 2 out of the top 4 is what you're saying. Not bad odds if you're a betting man. I am a betting man, and if Sony keeps up the good work they've got loads of cash headed their way.
- dieselstation, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8To all of you complaining about price.. I paid $500 for my PS3. I traded my very used PS2 into gamestop for $100 credit towards the PS3. Seeing as how the PS3 is backwards compatible for us U.S. folks.. I didn't lose any functionality of my older PS2 games, and was able to get it for $500 which made it "reasonable".
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7And going this route you could have spent only $400 to get a 20G. Nobody can see past the end of their noses on this whole trade-stuff-in-FTW stuff.
- Echuta, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Sorry got cut off on my comment edit: Guide button > Personal Settings > Online Status > Busy. Or select Notifications > deselct Show Notifications (or deselect Show During Movies).
- Ajajadude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Uh-oh, you know what this means? The fanboys will have one less thing to bash the PS3 with!
I gotta say this is great news. I love how easy it is to update on my 360 and it'll be good to have the same kind of setup for my PS3, too. - EatingPie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7"You know it's funny, here we have this console that has been hyped as the most powerful home console ever and for some reason or another they decided to NOT implement background downloading until the demand just got too high..."
C'mon, give Microsoft a break. It may have taken them 9 months to do it, but they got background d/l working on the XBox 360 way back in August. :p
I think those that forget history are doomed to complain incessantly about it... :-)
-Pie - Rincey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6425.00 GBP
=
836.313 USD
And we have a dif econemy its only around 100gbp more than the XBOX 360 when it came out but still hefty price tag compared to the WII ( 175 GBP ) - Sofocore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3add 100GBP if you would like to use WiFi with the Xbox360 and 200 more if you would like to watch HD movies on it
- Curyous, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Once again, the PS3 gets even better.
- bangbangblah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That doesn't even make sense.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1um.... yes folding@home is a good idea... I have it running right now... but this is about background downloading
- Sparke, on 10/12/2007, -11/+12Keep in mind it took Microsoft 7 months to implement background downloading (although it seems better than the PS3 implementation). This console is still sorely in need of a price drop.
- JasonMD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1FYI: I was calling the PS3 the underdog not Sony.
Re-read my comment and you might get it the second time around. - xioner, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8You know, some of us don't want to be online all the time... occasionally it is nice to just sit back and relax, instead of always having to be connected.
- mavranos, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6Major manufacturers already have players for under $400.
As soon as the third tier makers get cranked up you can expect the price to drop to $199 very quickly. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"the ps2 is outselling the ps3. that's how."
Are you illiterate? Sony can not be behind THEMSELVES! - huhCooL, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I haven't been home yet to try out 1.6, but I think that background downloading will be kinda cool, but I've never been impatient waiting for something to download. The Playstation network seems pretty quick and I can download a 500-600meg demo in a relatively short amount of time. I just change TV's channel and watch something else for a few minutes.
What I'm more excited about is to see if they have finally fixed that damn 80010005 error. That error has to be one of the most annoying things in the history of consoles. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1"Keep in mind it took Microsoft 7 months to implement background downloading (although it seems better than the PS3 implementation)."
How is it better? The BG implementations are exactly the same in both systems, right down to the limit of 6! Oh wait, the download manager isn't hidden under 3 layers of menus on PS3. - OwdenBowden, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2 @antbing
"Sony sold over 200 million PS1/PS2 consoles. There is no way in hell they can be considered underdogs in the console gaming industry."
Actually they can be considered the underdogs because these consoles (even though they are being used today) are obsolete consoles and cannot compete in todays "Next Generation" console/games. So it doesn't matter how many unites of the PS1/PS2 are sold - if you do not have sales/hits in the current round you lose because you just got knocked out!
Sony was selling everyone a very expensive DVD player - not a gaming system. If you believe otherwise then I have a few bridges to see you cheap. What I can say for the PS3 is that I'd like to see this in about a year when someone takes advantage of the Power under the PS3 hood and uses it for good. There is a lot of potential there but as a developer - when you have other systems available (Wii 360) you want to take the path of least resistance and cost so you design a game that will allow you to cr4ate it for every system to recover the costs, and then you forget about the power in the PS3 and move on to other games. From what I know - no one wants to create a PS3 game because it is way way too expensive, time consuming, and complex.
Now if Sony came out at the same price point of xbox 360 - then you could have had a different story. But as it stands it is way too expensive and not worth the investment. - Echuta, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5That's not the point. The point is that you don't even have a choice. Sony has embraced the strategy of telling people what they want instead of listening to what they want.
@nazi - You know you can turn that off right? - zilch321, on 10/12/2007, -13/+9Soon? Soon When? Sorry but no way in hell we'll see a 100 dollar hd dvd player of any brand or format for 100 bux within the next 18months.
- CanadianGeese, on 10/12/2007, -14/+8Agreed... Sony is the underdog and they did it to themselves.
- gharding, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4@zilch321:
You can already snag HD-DVD players for around $200. I wouldn't be surprised if within the next 18 months, one can be had for $100. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2so from $400 to $15 in around 8-10 years....man PS3 better hurry....oh wait we'll be on PS4 by then my bad
- chris4404, on 10/12/2007, -16/+9@Wild
I disagree, Sony is the underdog this time around. Microsoft has more exclusives and a better platform (so far) for gaming. With Devil May Cry coming over how long before Final Fantasy comes over too? The fact is its a money game, with Sony predicting only 4 Million PS3's sold this year a big developer can't afford to be PS3 exclusive. EA has already made this clear. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -17/+8I took 360 a year BUT Sony should have seen what we wanted and copied it right out of the gate. This year head start ***** has got to stop
