- p0wl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+58Sony still can't afford a PR team, eh?
- federalduck, on 10/12/2007, -5/+47Wow, Australian speak the truth. Kaz would have promised rumble, 1080i, background downloading, playing PS1 games on PSP without the need of a PS3, World wide release, 120 frames per second, built in 3 port Gigabit Switch, and play ALL PS2 and PS1 games.
- wingnut21, on 10/12/2007, -2/+41Maybe it was lost in translation?
Oh... - rompom7, on 10/12/2007, -9/+44Yeah because one man speaks for all of Australia... I'm not going to consider all Americans (I assume you are American, I don't usually see people from other countries make such comments) dumb because of the stupidity in your remark.
- Flummoxer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+38It was a Freudian slip.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32Absolutely. The PS3 is simply a loss leader attempt to get as many bluray players into homes as possible so the bluray format wins the format war. When thats done Sony will just be able to lay back and rake in the nasty royalties that every company wanting to make bluray movies will have to pay as license fees.
It was never about games! - Psicosis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32If there was any doubt that Sony were more focused on the PS3 being a blu-ray player then a games machine, this confirms it.
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19no, your not reading that as an australian, your reading that as a moron who is reading what they want into it
He is saying wii is for games
ps3 is for games + more
both microsoft and sony have come out and said, get a wii and get one of ours too because they know that nintendo has just walked around the whole battle and has done something that neither of them can compete with, so they have admitted that nintendo will do well but they want you to get one of theirs aswell (wii360 anyone? which in australia costs the same as a single ps3) - Supernova36, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22Someones getting fired.
- gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15"if i see one more of these comments im going to scream"
Someone's getting fired. - Hydraulix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Like with the UMD?
Zing! - termy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Remember, Sony believes that they are not competing with Nintendo's Wii, their competitor is Microsoft & their XBOX360. You wont see Sony saying anything about the XBOX360 in that manner.
- BrainCoder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13For the first time I Agree with Sony.
- Tunguska, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13He'll never be the HEAD of a major corporation.
- Tunguska, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Australians > soulscreme (first poster)
Oh the irony there. - culbeda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11All I heard was something about shrimp... and a Barbie.
I couldn't quite make sense of it. - UncleCrapper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11The comments sound a hell of a lot like PSWii, PS3 + Wii. In other words, "Hey, have fun. Buy that Wii, but make sure you buy a PS3 when it becomes available, sometime in 2010."
- Dalrek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10@federalduck
Don't forget he promised us 4D with the PS3 as well. It'll come in the next firmware patch. - TwistedMenta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11So the PS3 console is a Media Centre PC and the Wii console is a console. Check.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12"He'll never be the HEAD of a major corporation."
He might become the BUTT of several jokes if he's lucky, though. - Herzasche, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Is it just me or is Sony just trying to kick themselves in the balls?
- ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8So... the Wii is "fun" and the PS3 is "enjoyable" ?
Sounds almost like he is saying the PS3 provides a tolerable level of fun. - fremeer, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13the way i see it they meant its more of a fun console with no extras. They say ps3 can do fun as well but also has other things like blu-ray, blah blah.
- dstywho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7sounds like playing the PS3 is like going to work.
- Mrstupid7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@23r17i05o42n
No, Sony is still "working" on that. - Agret, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9VLC / Mplayer is going to suck on PS3 anyway, as they have benched it Linux currently runs like on an 800mhz box. Good luck playing back any sort of HD content with that.
- lazydrumhead, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9sigh. people named soulscreme are dumb for calling all australians dumb.
what the heck is wrong with your soul that you need creme for it, anyways? - ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@popfrogs: While I'm sure your wife is a both a conneisseur and a critic of high def - and that's lovely and all - I'm more interested in some other things you've said...
"...and Blu-ray gives you alot[SIC] of cool options dvds simply can't offer."
ORLY? What are these 'cool options' you speak of? I'm asking honestly because I've never seen them in action so I don't know. Do you use said options frequently?
Also, do you have a wireless keyboard/mouse hooked up to the PS3? Because I can't imagine 'surfing the net at 1080i' with the SIXAXIS *shudders*.
General question not aimed at popfrogs: Have they figured out the upscaling dilemma yet? - SirBotchness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I use my computer to access my music and photos, and when i actually consider buying a blue ray movie then i'll think about using that feature. When i buy a playstation i want to play video games goddamnit.
- Galaeron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Just not "when I want to buy a blue-ray dvd" but when the blue ray player works ill think of using it. Its dumb. Who wants to use their gaming console to listen to music and look at pictures...not I. My computer is much better for that.
- SambekZX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The theory makes sense. However, if that is truly their one and only goal, they should have released a barebones, more media-centric PS3 at $200-$300 to make it a knee-jerk purchase. Larger hard drives, motion-sensing controllers, and other gaming extras could be purchased as modular add-ons. That way, they could decisively win the format war by installing a large Blu-Ray customer base with the Playstation name. They might come in second on the console front, but winning the format wars would pay larger profits. I'm willing to bet that humans are still tactile creatures and want physical media to hold, showcase, pass on to friends and family, sell on Ebay, etc.. Tying a movie to one or even a limited number of computers/players in this download era still irks a lot of people.
Instead, Sony decided to pursue both goals: console and format. The initial results on either front don't look good. - Tuxbunta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4So consumers should buy products to give the company or developers credit? Yeah, I really don't see that working.
Also Sony still screwed up the launch. Nintendo and Microsoft still have 4 months (or whenever it is coming out) before Sony can compete - taxman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8The guy clearly is giving credit where its due.Just because Wii is fun,it doesnt mean PS3 is not.
What he is probably trying to say is that both are good systems with PS3 offering much more than just gaming.
Sony actually saying something positive about another system!Thats a first! - deaper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah I agree both MS and Sony have accepted the fact that Nintendo will do well. But they seem to think that because nintendo isn't all about increased cpu and graphics power that it's not really a next gen console. The fact is if you look at the sales of the wii and the amount of buzz that the wii has generated, the wii is indeed a contender in the next-gen console war, and not only that but the gamers have spoken and are going for the wii. If sony and microsoft don't reallize hey we need to focus on the games just as much if not more than we're focusing on all the other features of the system they will not survive the console war after this one. Sony's mistake when they made the PS2 was underestimating the XBox. And now both Sony and Microsoft are making the same mistake from Nintendo.
- ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Agreed. I think that Sony has now accepted the idea that lots and lots of people are going to buy a Wii regardless of what they or MS might do. They'd rather see PSWii than Wii60.
Although they've missed the point that: Cost of PS3 = Cost of Wii60, so PSWii assumes consumers really like to empty their wallets. - Tuxbunta, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6That is all well and good, but that is Sony's biggest problem. The consumers think that all three are competitors whether or not Sony thinks so, but for Sony to find this out they would have to ask their customers and that it is like a Vampire touching a cross to them. So what do we have at the end of the day (or next year). The Wii as the most successful console ever (non gamers are going to eat it up), Microsoft taking the PS2s place in sales (think Vista, think Zune, think Mobile, think handheld, now put it all together), and the 600$ WTF??? console left on the shelves as every single normal person buys a Wii or 360. For what reason is there for average Joe and Jane to buy it for their kids? Is it the Bluray they never heard of, the media capabilities the 360 is capable of, the fact that it is more powerful than the 360 (even though games Gears of War and Resistance still look the same).
Sony is screwed. - negativefx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just like the dentist! Depending on what magazines they have.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2He doesn't say it's more fun, he says it's more "of a fun, intuitive device". He's saying it's a different kind of device, one which is purely about fun, while presumably the PS3 has a serious side.
Either way, it's not a damning statement. What's wrong with someone at Sony saying they like the Wii. People crap on Sony for being arrogant, then when a Sony person says something good about the competition, they crap on Sony for that too.
David Jaffe (SCEA employee) got a lot of boost from speaking his beliefs unfiltered on here. Why do people now say that with this guy it means Sony has a problem?
Did you ever read the article in Playstation magazine, the interview with J Allard? He likes Playstation too.
To me, it's good when companies take the competition seriously. It implies they will ensure they do everything they can to compete, instead of just plopping something out and hoping it sticks. On the other hand, J Allard is on the Zune team... - SambekZX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3In a sense. But what I'm saying is the cheaper console should have been the only version released, and it should have been priced another $100-$150 lower. Instead, they released two still-too-expensive versions. The prices are such that the low-end is out of reach for the average family, and those who can afford the price range will want to buy the high-end anyway. In short, they've found the sweet spot for destroying their chances at installing a wide consumer base made up of the average consumer.
- daridave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Well, he's right. Wii is about games. PS3 is a trojan horse for pushing Blu-Ray movies.
My definition of "fun" is Wii60 ! - MalDON, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Or you can buy a wii60 and have both...
- Dominatus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I'm pretty sure many digg submitters could find wonderful jobs at FOX News...this is seriously one of the most "out of context" articles I've ever seen on Digg...
- deaper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Haydio:
Someones getting fired. - SineNomen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's what he intended to say, but since he actually said, the Wii is "more fun", "a more fun product" it gets a digg. We all know what he meant, but the wording was very tricky and he slipped up.
- enforcerpsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It is?? The interface..well...sucks. Look at the reviews.
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5If you want a media center don't buy the PS3, buy an original XBOX, mod it and put XBMC on it. Kicks ass =D
- GliTCH82, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why the ***** does Sony always have to be so different? Why not go with HD-DVD or maybe help work on that standard, why not SD instead of the stupid MemoryStick? I suppose the same people working at Sony who brought you Betamax are still kicking ideas around, huh?
- aweraw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@popfrogs
Like I've been saying all along, when Sony allows you to run Linux on your PS3 it does so by abstracting the actual hardware away from the linux kernel, and only provides an crippled sub-set of the real power the system is capable of. You can't use the good bits of the GPU, and as far as I've heard, you can't use the SPU's at all.
I know Sony have been practicing their foot cannon routine with the PS3, but being that they are trying to push their blu-ray format with it, do you really believe they want to give you another way to play HD content on your PS3 (essentially negating any need for you to buy blu-ray discs?), like allowing Linux full access to the hardware? No way. - Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This headline is pretty misleading. He's saying the Wii in a different way, not more fun. Did any of you read the freakin article or just go off of the headline? What he said was:
"Wii is a core gaming device. It's a more fun, intuitive sort of product to pick up..."
And about the PS3:
"The PS3 is a broader entertainment solution; so you can have your fun, enjoyable gaming ... but then you have a whole suite of other applications."
He's basically saying that the Wii is more like the DS and the PS3 is like the PSP. One is simply for gaming and the other does gaming and other media options. Don't get me wrong, I have no desire to ever get a PS3, but this headline is just silly and begging for easy diggs. - thatgirlismine, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Man, is it me or is Sony Australia on crack? I mean, between this and "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC, and I'm a VAIO" ( http://www.digg.com/apple/I_m_PC_I_m_a_Mac_I_m_a_VAIO for those who missed).., well I don't know. What coked out thing will they do next?
