This guy is just begging everyone to buy a Wii...
And I don't forgive the remark, assclown. - fani, on 10/12/2007, -21/+228Aw, c'mon. Sony only stole a wii-bit ;)
Phony Sony - Jonny5alive, on 10/12/2007, -15/+115"When Nintendo launched its N64 in 1996 it also had 3D graphics, did we say, 'Nintendo stole our idea!'?"
No, because the PS1 wasn't the first console to use 3D graphics..... - justice7, on 10/12/2007, -35/+118+mod for the useage of assclown in the first comment
sony sucks and this just goes to prove it.
One more nail in the coffin for the PS3 - LucifersChild, on 10/12/2007, -9/+91"When we brought the PlayStation to the market in 1994, we introduced real time 3-D graphics for the first time," he noted."
Weird, I swear there was a game called Star Fox for the SNES that was released in '93 that took advantage of Nintendo's Super FX chip.
Sorry Phil Harrison, no body's buying into Sony's *****. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -16/+91"When Nintendo launched its N64 in 1996 it also had 3D graphics, did we say, 'Nintendo stole our idea!'?"
It sounds like they're emotionally scarred. - snoozzell, on 10/12/2007, -10/+85First to 3D graphics, I've got one word
STARFOX
I'm pretty sure super nintendo came out a little before the playstation - Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -7/+73Wait until you see the PS3's online service: "PS3 Live"

Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide has now patented "Sour Grapes"
Any further use of Sour Grapes by any other company shall now be deemed in violation of copyright and shall be subjected to a great deal of belligerent whining in the modern electronic press.
In other news Sony has purchased, from Bungie, the use of their corporate vehicle in order to better facilitate the transportation of Sony execs. Said Phil Harrison of Sony, "We really are pleased with the purchase of the WAAAAAAAAAH-mbulance so far." - TinFoil209, on 10/12/2007, -11/+70"Sony: "When Nintendo launched its N64 in 1996 it also had 3D graphics, did we say, 'Nintendo stole our idea!'? Obviously not."
Ahh ok Sony puts in motion sensing last minute, buy hey Nintendo stole a whole dimension from Sony. Nintendo thought we were going to be in the pong, asteroids era forever until Sony gave them the gift of depth/z-axis. Thank you Sony! - piper999, on 10/12/2007, -5/+64Klisk: "(I believe the first version didn't even have rumble.)"
Funnily enough the latest version doesn't have rumble either! - FlyingLlama, on 10/12/2007, -10/+64Sony invented 3D in about the same way Al Gore invented the internet.
- treed, on 10/12/2007, -6/+58Correct, the first PS1 controller was very much like the SNES controller with handles, renamed buttons and an extra shoulder button on each side. Then the N64 came out with an analog stick, and the rumble pak.
A bit later, the dual-shock came out. With *two* analog sticks and *built-in* rumble. Amazing! - Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -7/+51Funny part is that the PS1 came with a stock controller that was much like a SNES pad, and then when the N64's analog sticks became acclaimed, of course, they made their first version of the dual shock, whatever it was called at the time. (I believe the first version didn't even have rumble.)
- ripter, on 10/12/2007, -8/+49Sony invented 3D? Wow I never knew!
- almostmanda, on 10/12/2007, -2/+43I wish they'd steal the Wii's price, too.
- ByteGuerilla, on 10/12/2007, -8/+47"Let me guess. You must be Mr. Kutaragi..."
"Yeah I'm... I'm Ken."
"Would you describe for me what Shigeru Miyamoto looks like?"
"..."
"What country you from?"
"What?"
"'What' ain't no country I ever heard of, they play Riiiidge Racerrrr in what?"
"What?"
"Riiiidge Racerrrr, *****, do you play it?"
"Yes."
"Then you understand where I'm coming from... describe what Shigeru Miyamoto looks like!"
"What?"
"Say 'what' again. I dare you; I double-dare you, *****, say 'what' one more god damn time. Now describe for me what Shigeru Miyamoto looks like..."
"He's... he's Japanese..."
"Go on..."
"...and he's... he's short."
"Does he look like a bitch?"
"What?"
--BLAM!--
"DOES... HE... LOOK... LIKE... A BITCH!?"
"No..."
"Then why'd you try to ***** him like a bitch?"
"... I didn't..."
"YES YOU DID, KEN. You tried to ***** him, and Shigeru Miyamoto doesn't like to be ***** by anyone, except Mrs. Miyamoto."
"..."
"You remember E3, Ken?"
"Yes."
"Well see there's this passage I got memorised, seems appropriate for this situation: 'The Playstation 3 will retail at $600.'" - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -7/+43"When Nintendo launched its N64 in 1996 it also had 3D graphics, did we say, 'Nintendo stole our idea!'?"
No, because the PS1 wasn't the first console to use 3D graphics....."
You're partially right. Computers were much further ahead, 3d-wise than consoles were at that point. Gee, Sony, way to come original. - Jonny5alive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+43@dclowd9901
I was talking about the Sega Saturn, which came out 2 weeks before the PS1 and could do 3D graphics......
I'm just left speechless by the stupid things said by people working at Sony over the last month. - KyleRayner, on 10/12/2007, -17/+50Which idea is he talking about? Sony has stolen a lot of 'em.
- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4350 bucks says Nintendo wins the pissing match.
- Eywanadi, on 10/12/2007, -8/+37Also don't forget Wolfenstein 3D from 1992, Doom from 1993, and Virtua racing for the Sega 32x in 1994.
Sorry Sony you were far from the first to do 3d. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29So Phill basically said that Nintendo stole the concept of 3D graphics from Sony for their N64. However, StarFox on SNES sported 3D graphics using the FX chip way back in 1993 before PSX even came out in 1995.
Look, I'm all about competition between big companies; but Sony's comments have become more and more presumptuous to the very consumers they're trying to appeal to. Copying an idea and then snubbing their nose at it is downright disgusting. I think Nintendo needs to hand Sony a shovel, cause they're really digging themselves a deep deep hole. - kaje, on 10/12/2007, -7/+30Yeah. I'm really glad too. 'Cause the world used to be flat and I was very scared of falling off the edge of it.
- nibble128, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24Don't forget everyone... the original PlayStation was being developed as a CD expansion for the SNES...sort of like the Sega CD for the Sega Genesis.... if there hadn't been a Nintendo console... there wouldn't be a Sony console.
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23Let's not forget Ultima Underworld which came out in 1992, which featured a true 3D engine rather than the half-assed 2.5D used by Wolfenstein and Doom.
- KyleRayner, on 10/12/2007, -8/+27"Such innovations become possible because of a combination of technology, cost and manufacture capacities"
Sony does such a good job of neglecting to mention that they tossed in tilt sensing at basically the last minute. - Rabbethan, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25It's not that we keep Sony bashing, they just keep doing stupid *****.
- stan205, on 10/12/2007, -11/+29Now reading what I wrote, I don't know what I'm attempting to say. HAHAHA
- gamesector, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22How could they have the audacity to mention Dual Shock as their original idea when they stole it? At least Microsoft paid a settlement for it. Anyway, it's not like Sony were the first to think about 3D graphics, what about Wolfenstein 3D for the PC in 1992 etc?
- lonelycanuck, on 10/12/2007, -8/+25I bought this and Stanely Cup for the Super FX Chip. I was 11, and had no idea what an FX Chip was, but I do remember it having the word super in the title.
All hail Nintendo. - pirco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17When Nintendo ruled the world, they were pretty evil, with the bullying of vendors to sell and promote Nintendo games. But I think them falling to third place and being the underdog has made them become so much better of a company.
- serpentor, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20Like the kotaku poster said, if Sony is going to use the 3D analogy ("we didn't say the N64 copied the PS1's real-time 3D"), they need to get their history straight. Nintendo's Starfox with the Super FX chip had the PS1 beat in bringing to market real time 3D by several years.
- Karyyk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Hell, throw in Atari, 3DO & 3dfx while you're at it. 3dfx brought the first consumer 3D accelerator to market, and both the 3DO console and Jaguar had internal 3D functions in them (never mind the fact that Atari brought one of the first polygonal 3D titles to market in 'I, Robot' to arcades way back in 1983). Sony is doing what it's always done, standing on the shoulders of giants (in this case, the true innovators).
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Or the option to not automatically click on every article about a subject you hate....oh wait you mean you didn't have to click this one?
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -13/+26It's just like Sony to do all these "innovations" but implement each one half-assed. Didn't they learn from their PSP release? They tried to make a handheld to compete with the DS but made it twice as expensive and half as good.
(PS I own a PSP and play a lot of games on it, just not Sony's. It's all emulation and I'll stick with it until they start supporting the damned thing better.) - gcpeart, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Because it is like a train wreck, is horrible, and kind of tragic, and yet you just can't look away.
- rimco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Actually, Virtua Racing hit the Genny even before the 32X, thanks to their SVP chip, which acted much like the Super FX chip on the SNES.
- borsdy, on 10/12/2007, -9/+20Yeah, the guys that made that Warhawk demo had like 10 days to implement it apparently.
- tito13kfm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14What about 3d Monster Maze in 1981?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3D_Monster_Maze
Or even http://www.geocities.com/jim_bowery/spasim.html 1974?
Yes i've played 3d monster maze.. No I haven't played spasim but have spoken with a few who did in the mid 70's. Almost as fun as Wumpus from what I gathered. - ripter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11As far as I can remember, the Powerglove was the first motion sensing controller for any game system. If that's true, then Nintendo kinda did invent it.
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14@Eywanadi
What about Battlezone from 1980? http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=7059 - EssPii, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16They don't need to hand them a shovel, they need to give them a wii with the game 'Shovel' on it and then Sony can use the controller to dig their virtual hole.
- morningblur, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Sony was working on the SNES CD drive for Nintendo, not the N64. Sony and Nintendo had inked a deal that would give Sony all the rights to anything done with the "Super C.D" format. Nintendo wisely saw this and backed out, rather dramatically by signing another deal with Phillips.
- Karyyk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13The Wii-mote incorporates a lot of idea, but it's the first time they've all been rolled-up into one sweet little package. Credit where credit is due. No one else would have had the guts to replace their standard controllers with this, save Nintendo. And no, they didn't have the SAME idea. Had the Wii-mote not been shown earlier, Sony would NOT have incorporated that aspect into their revamped Dual-Shock (erm, minus the SHOCK).
And quit the fanboy bashing. I just *love* that the same stereotypes are attributed to each group by the other, and all it goes to show is that they're just smarmy little reflections of themselves. - TheGeek27, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12This whole stupid "durrr, nintendo is kiddie" sentiment got old several years ago. And it wasn't accurate then, either.
- SanityInAnarchy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16And let's not forget, there were two years between the PS1 and the N64. That's long enough for us to think of the N64 as not "stealing Sony's idea", but rather, the sequel to the PS1. And any way you look at it, it's certainly better than tacking it on 1 week before the show.
Anyway, I won't be buying a PS3. I wish Nintendo supported Linux, but if you noticed, PS2 Linux was not Linux, it was crippleware. With comments like this, I hardly expect PS3 Linux to be any different. - implosion, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14@ByteGuerilla
That was pretty good, can I suggest replacing 'The Playstation 3 will retail at $600.' with:
"The path of the righteous console is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil Sony. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For Wii is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost controllers. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to scratch and destroy my DVD. And you will know my name is the Wii when I lay my vengeance upon PS3."
I figure if you're going to do the quote do the whole thing. - pbaehr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10That's the key. I never had much of a problem with the idea that Sony "stole" the idea. Nintendo had a good idea. It was only a matter of time before it was copied and the end user benefits by having different companies take it in their own direction. It's technology evolution.
The thing that left a bad taste in my mouth was the way that Sony unveiled the new controller like it was supposed to be an earth shattering idea. It became obvious that it was tacked on within (literally) a few days before E3 when they realized Nintendo was on to something and they'd better try to compete.
It's not that they saw a good idea and copied it...it's that they did a ***** job at it. - deweyhewson, on 10/12/2007, -10/+19Sony excels in (sic) Final Fantasy? Huh, I could've sworn that was by a little known company known as Square...
Sony itself doesn't excel in much. -
