- meltingrobot, on 10/10/2007, -7/+69Ugh, Sony needs to give up on the Memory Stick Duo. Why the ***** didn't they put an SD slot instead? Their format lost. They need to get over it.
- dsendecki, on 10/28/2007, -1/+39This negatively affects my old PSP self-image. It hates itself and thinks its fat...
- mywhitenoise, on 10/10/2007, -3/+32Yeah, Nintendo doesn't do that either. How many versions of the GBA are there?
- Gryffydd, on 10/28/2007, -8/+36Sony? Get over losing a format war? hahahahahah
- bratterscain, on 10/10/2007, -0/+26Your mom smashed it because of that? Glad I didn't grow up in your home.
- greenlight2001, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22So what *did* she find on it?
- open2slander, on 10/10/2007, -12/+31Want one.
- burchie2, on 10/10/2007, -4/+23i remember when i got mine from japan when they first came out for christmas. it was 600 bucks with ridge racer, plus 100 for a mem stick. then my mom smashed it a month later because she thought she found porn on it. . . those were the days.
- goldaracena, on 10/10/2007, -5/+23I'm not going to change my old fat PSP, not enough new features.
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18i've never had any problems with my PSP's screen. are you sure you didn't get a fake imitation or something?
- dsendecki, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16It's a National Geographic special, Mom! I swear. Mom — put it down! Mom! Mom! No!
- jacksons98, on 10/10/2007, -0/+132gb Memorystick for PSP is about $20-35 now depending on the brand. It's not like they are jacking you. The price for Memorystick is right in line with other types of memory.
- bigbadgoat, on 10/10/2007, -4/+17not act as if its a common problem, I've seen about 100 different PSPs, and only seen one dead/stuck pixel on 2 of the units. Never noticed a ghosting problem either.
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12aside from cost, it's about the same as the SD cards. they even partnered with SanDisk for the Memory Stick Pro cards, including the most recent Memory Stick Micro and PRO-HG. so it's using the same technology essentially. the SD standard is just a little more open and has been licensed to 3rd party manufacturers, lowering the price.
besides, Sony devices have _always_ used Memory Stick slots not SD. what did you expect? - jacksons98, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Except that PS2s are still selling like crazy and PSP sold something like 300,000 in Japan alone last week.
- bratterscain, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13The RAM has been doubled also for faster loading of games.
- ChildeRoland420, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12For $200 + tax you can get the System, the Dax game, a Family Guy UMD, and a 1 GB stick. Why would you buy the other package?
- geartype2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10phoenix wright and pokemon can only take me so far. Monster Hunter and Portable Ops just has more replay value. I'm sorry.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Probably because the older models were PSP-1000's.
Whats new? Video output, 33% lighter, 15% slimmer, brighter screen, better buttons (I can't really tell the difference), improved battery life. I think that's about it. - dsmx, on 10/10/2007, -5/+14So many DS fanboys here it's unbelievable. The PSP is not a failure and it does have great games. MGS:PO, wipeout, lumines, crush, killzone liberation, ratchet and clank, daxter, the list goes on and on. People who say it has no good games are idiots.
- tjbugs1, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Have one and LOVE IT! I had been wanting a PSP for about a year and even went to the store to get it like last may when the CSR told me that the new slim was to be out in the fall.
- geartype2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9you'll see the ghosting problem on games that were ports with little thought into the psp screen. Popolocrois is the major one. But games like Portable Ops are ghost free.
I think he's bitching just to bitch though. The PSP is a wonderful gift from our corporate overlords and my girlfriend has been addicted to it ever since I poped Harvest Moon into it. On the other hand, both our DS lites get little use out of them, maybe zelda will spark some interest. - acarr, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11to be fair, with the original PSP:
The headphones were garbage.
The 32MB is so small it's practically worthless (you can fit 10 MP3s on it!!!).
Does anyone use the sleeve? It just makes it that much bigger and harder to fit into your pocket.
I would be bummed that it didn't come with the TV out cable. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10wow, the reviewer is misinformed about TV's
he said games can only be played over component so you cant play games without an HDTV. Um, SDTVs come with component connections as well. - senorcool, on 10/10/2007, -14/+22Thats just what Sony does. They make something big then just make it smaller. PS1, PS2, PSP, and sure as hell they are gonna do it for PS3.
- Hickeroar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7UMD only failed as a video format. I think it makes a bang-up handheld game format.
- alx242, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7You haven't checked out the library of games for the PSP when you pulled that comment out of your ass...It is damn good!
- iceschade, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9I'm looking forward to the PS3-Pocket (coming out in 2056)
- alx242, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Just because you stopped caring doesn't mean the world revolves around you...
- geartype2, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9He's just pointing out Nintendo does it as well. Do you remember the Game Pocket? then the game boy color? then the color pocket? Then the COLOR? then the COLOR pocket? I do.
- Visnik, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6"Does anyone use the sleeve? It just makes it that much bigger and harder to fit into your pocket."
The cloth sleeve is worthless. the Logitech case, the clear plastic one is very nice. My year old psp still look in pristine condition from that case. I have even droped it a few times and the case saved my ass. So if you want something to protect the PSP I would recommend it highly. - smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6people need to read the documentation and guides out there more carefully if they plan on running CFW. but, if you have an original PSP you can always use Pandora's battery. should work on any PSP AFAIK.
- JayD16, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Uhm, its a different aspect ratio.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6The beauty of the PSP also is that the memory stick pro duos are so cheap now; I paid about $50 for a 4GB stick. I bought my original PSP a few months ago after trading in my DS Lite. I love the remote play function with my PS3 and soon I can leave the house without putting my PS3 in remote mode and use the PSP to trigger that.
It's a nice little multimedia device with a decent amount of heft and enough memory to dump whatever onto a memory stick and go. If I filled a pack of wrigley's spearmint with the memory sticks I'd probably have close to 60GB in my pocket. - alx242, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6If you would try gaming on the new PSP you would switch it instantly. The feeling of the new PSP is much better with the improved DPAD (which was screwed up on the fat) and the responsiveness of all the buttons. It is totally worth it excluding all the new features.
- samdu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5It may not have a single "killer app," but the PSP library is damned good now.
- iceschade, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Most of us were from a pre-2000 era... The 2000s are still new. Back in 1986, the new HandyVac 2000 would sound totally futuristic... And even though we're living in 2007, the number "2000" still sounds futuristic, due to our past.
- acarr, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I completely concur. I have a single dead pixel on my unit which I play all the time and bought at launch. Never had ghosting problems.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Don't be a trolling ***** for starters.
PSPs LCD is widely regarded as the singular best for any handheld gaming system in history.
You'd have to get a UMPC to get better - samdu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Sony couldn't put a second stick on the revision. It would have immediately alienated their existing user base. Games written to the second stick wouldn't work on the original PSP. I'll bet that PSP2 has two sticks, though.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5...and 333mhz mode is unlocked out of the box, although I think it scales depending on what you're doing to save battery life. The 333mhz mode was just unlocked in a recent Sony firmware on the original PSP.
- alx242, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4"...when software could of fixed that."
That's why Sony keeps pumping out firmware updates for it... - geartype2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I think it's just a hardware revision. Sony does this with all their product lines. Sony likes gradual changes.
- Visnik, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4"The comparatively heavy PSP feels more like a utility system than a toy" "The black color and weight of it doesn't make it feel like a toy"
Being somewhat older, in my 30's these are two reasons I currently like the PSP 1001. It feels sturdy, heavy, tough, edgy and powerful. As it was listed in the article, the packaging was sweet, and the PSP does look a little scary. I use it more as a video player and music player, though I do fire up a game of GTA from time to time.
As far as the new PSP 2000, I won't upgrade, or even buy that one as a second PSP, I will stick with the original 1001 as it feels and looks like a serious piece of hardware that it is. - dsmx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I keep seeing people complain about ghosting, however I've played burnout and wipeout and I don't see any are people playing a different system to me?

- mokkos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4DS doesn't have those 2 things either but you still enjoy it.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Yeah but the thing is, Nintendo just does that to sell everything to you guys 2 or 3 times. They probably have a roadmap for these things. They don't do it to improve packaging, extend battery life, etc. Sony "evolves" their products to cut down production costs and pass those savings on. See the PS2 vs PS2 slim for an example.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4glitched, you're half right. You need a progressive scan enabled (480p) TV in order to play games on your TV (movies and the XMB will work fine in 480i). Most standard def tvs that have component inputs don't support 480p, they just have them back there because you get better color, and a sharper image in 480i by component.
