- bhattsan, on 01/07/2008, -8/+52No support for older psps=LAME
- shinythingy, on 01/07/2008, -5/+31I would like to know why this can't happen on the old PSP's.
- Sabin, on 01/07/2008, -7/+29Cuz sony already has your money but now they want more of it.
- inactive, on 01/07/2008, -0/+21Well there is a chance it has to do with the more RAM, we will see if DA can put it on old PSP's, he can do freaking anything.
- kerpalh, on 01/07/2008, -3/+20go Dark Alex
- shinythingy, on 01/07/2008, -3/+16Valve?
- krazyman, on 01/07/2008, -4/+17Now I just have to wait until a new custom firmware version is released that supports skype. :D
- warbird, on 01/07/2008, -1/+12to add to this, noobz just released a SIP phone homebrew for the psp:
http://www.noobz.eu/joomla/news/make-phone-calls-w ... - djbelieve, on 01/07/2008, -0/+6If you make a lot of international calls it makes sense. The rates are amazingly low. Sure, Skype on the PSP isn't going to be a big deal for everyone, but it is for me.
- Zap2, on 01/07/2008, -3/+9Really? I'd say Value for PC, XBL for consoles....
- dansmeek, on 01/07/2008, -2/+7psp keeps getting better. its funny that i wouldn't have even bought one if i never got a ps3, and it turns out to be such a great value. ok, maybe i won't use skype on my psp since i have a cell phone, but it's a nice feature to have -- in other words i see no reason why it should not have skype on it. although i wish the psp had a built in microphone (doesn't the DS have one)?
- inactive, on 01/07/2008, -0/+4Remote Play, portable PS1 games.
- inactive, on 01/07/2008, -0/+4The old ones don't have enough space left in the internal flash for something this big. The new PSPs have double the internal flash.
- inactive, on 01/07/2008, -0/+3The old ones don't have enough space left in the internal flash for something this big. The new PSPs have double the internal flash.
- GhostFreeman, on 01/07/2008, -6/+8***** you too Sony.
- TheTjalian, on 01/07/2008, -2/+4It reminds me of those nationwide bank adverts...
"Hi, I'd like to add VOIP support to my PSP?"
"Sorry, new customers only!" - HMMaster, on 01/07/2008, -1/+3Maybe the fat psp dont have enough memory to run skype?
- MaTT2011, on 01/07/2008, -1/+3Really? thats a bit, see;HUGE, stretch my friend. XBL, virtual console, valve and other services come to mind waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay before that of sony.
- blahtastic, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1Really? Good to learn.
- shinythingy, on 01/07/2008, -0/+1The PSP camera is available outside of Japan, i have one i got from GAME
- thejokker, on 01/07/2008, -3/+4"Many game companies have already proved that you can't make good games on mobile phones -- in a few weeks, Sony will find out if the reverse is also true."
What exactly the reverse of that statement? that you cant make a mobile phone on good games? I dont know if it is just me but that doesnt seem to make sense. - blankoboy, on 01/07/2008, -1/+2Great news all around but this leaves some questions:
- will the "Chotto" camera get release outside of Japan for the PSP (it includes a webcam and microphone) and will Skype work with it?
- will Skype be a separate download to be stored on your MSProDuo that also requires a firmware upgrade or will it be soley in firmware? I'm hoping it will be a downloadable app that also requires the intial firmware update. This way, any time Skype is udpated for the PSP we only need to download the app and not update the firmware.
- will the PS3 also be getting Skype functionality and will it work with the existing eye-toy? - Typhoon2009, on 01/08/2008, -0/+1Wh-wh-wh-wh WHAT?! I paid Sony THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS (Memory sticks cost a lot more 2 years ago... it was a 1GB + the PSP) for my PSP and now they screw US over?! That said, this is slightly more incentive to get the new slim white PSP (and a white battery cover so it doesn't have the stupid Darth Vader helmet).
- Nesk, on 01/07/2008, -2/+2I have used in game voice chat on the DS with the built in mic. The headset is just for convenience as far as I know.
- Bahimiron, on 01/07/2008, -3/+3Why the slim and not the fat?
- Nobi-Wan, on 01/07/2008, -1/+1Yeah, I got a 4GB stick for $20 from Circuit City a few weeks ago when they were having a sale.
- CReyes4182, on 01/07/2008, -1/+1damnit I bought a fat one at launch :( Looks like I have a reason to get the slim one now :D
- shinythingy, on 01/07/2008, -1/+1Thats pretty much what skype is tool
- Langford, on 01/07/2008, -2/+2Really? How much did that PSP cost again?
- Official, on 01/11/2008, -0/+0More than 246 million members are registered for the use of this communications software, which enables users to communicate with other Skype users around the world over the Internet.
http://news.taume.com/Technology/Gadgets/New-PSP-- ... - Brasky, on 01/07/2008, -2/+24GB memory sticks can be had pretty damn cheap ($35 if you look) and you can rip UMDs to an image file with hacked firmware. Works pretty good.
- nick0909, on 01/07/2008, -2/+1I have a slim, and unless I am missing something, there is no microphone. Am I going to have to buy one just to use skype? I would rather they update their WinAmp streaming client that they added in the last update so the interface didn't suck so hard.
- Nobi-Wan, on 01/07/2008, -3/+2Except they're only doing this for the Slim PSP for their own retarded reasons.
- Zippo, on 01/07/2008, -4/+3More than a cell phone and DS combined.
- death2newbs, on 01/07/2008, -2/+0Assuming it works properly, I think it's a smart move on Sony's part. Adding a feature like this is a good marketing tool, even though most people probably won't use it.
- thejokker, on 01/07/2008, -3/+1While it might be cool, who doesnt have a cell phone? I get free nights free weekend free long distance free calls to anyone on my network and free calls to 10 more people i choose.
VOIP is cool, but is it really that great on a psp? I - blahtastic, on 01/07/2008, -4/+2Yeah, it's not a amazing quality one or anything, the voice supporting games require a different headset, just like the psp.
Now unfortunately I've never been able to use the psp chat, or the browser, because nothing likes my overly picky router, no matter how I configure that *****. SOCOM FB was pretty sweet online though. - thejokker, on 01/07/2008, -3/+1What about getting a Ps3 made you want a PSP?
- blahtastic, on 01/07/2008, -8/+5Ding ding ding! We have a winner!!!
- thejokker, on 01/07/2008, -4/+1Thats the only advantage i could think of too. So really the big deal of this whole mess is:
"PSP to offer lower international calling rates"
Doesnt seem so earth shattering - matthewtc, on 01/07/2008, -9/+5pretty neat stuff.
- stephbangm, on 01/07/2008, -10/+2I like Skype but not as much as I like Ron Paul! :D
- WhereAmI, on 01/07/2008, -18/+4Now if Sony would just release a PSP with a decent hard drive, made all games down loadable via the PS3 store or the PC store (both preferably) and a SDK then this thing would be the best device on the market.
Note: Sony has done more for downloadable games than _anyone_ else out there.
