Okay, you forced me to dig out the original SMB manual. Time for some quotes:
"One day the kingdom of the peaceful mushroom people was invaded by the Koopa, a tribe of turtles famous for their black magic. The quiet, peace-loving Mushroom People were turned into mere stones, bricks and even field horse-hair plants, and the Mushroom Kingdom fell into ruin.
The only one who can undo the magic spell on the Mushroom People and return them to their normal selves is the Princess Toadstool, the daughter of the Mushroom King. Unfortunately, she is presently in the hands of the great Koopa turtle king.
Mario, the hero of this story (maybe) hears about the Mushroom People's plight and sets out on a quest to free the Mushroom Princess from the evilKoopa and restore the fallen kingdom of the Mushroom People.
You are Mario! It's up to you to save the Mushroom People from the black magic of the Koopa!"
---
"Mario's Friends
If you come across mushrooms who have been turned into bricks or made invisible, they reward you by giving you a power boost. With each boost Mario changes into a different, more powerful Mario, as shown below.
Mario -> Magic Mushroom -> Super Mario -> Fire Flower -> Fiery Mario
(return to regular Mario when bumped into by a bad guy)"
---
"Enemies
Little Goomba
A mushroom who betrayed the Mushroom Kingdom. One stomp and he dies.
(100 pts.)"
---
Hope that explains a few details. ;^) - notforsale, on 10/12/2007, -4/+46re: goombas
"they just walk back and forth along a predetermined path, and if Mario touches them, it's his own fault. But, instead of doing the merciful thing and avoiding them, Mario takes it upon himself to stomp every last weaponless Goomba to death"
Worth it just for that. - dosle, on 10/12/2007, -4/+45I learned that Italians love gold coins, and will jump any height to obtain them.
- Miyazaki, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30http://www.kennyvelez.com/images/illustration/koopas.jpg
- J3yrad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27LOL @ the comic. "Hey, a pipe!!".... Wonder if that was a drug implication.
- JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -6/+29I thought that was Jews.
*ducks* - KMehthas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23"When I was a young boy, I saw my mother kill a spider with a teacozy. Years later, I realized it was not a spider; it was my uncle Harold."
- BevansDesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14"And despite the fact that he's a plumber, has anyone ever seen him do any plumbing? At all? He can go down enormous, man-sized pipes, yeah, but he doesn't even carry a goddamn wrench, much less an assortment of tools necessary to perform any degree of adequate pipe maintenance."
In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (GBA), there was a part where they got to do some ACTUAL PLUMBING! Finally, you get to see that they're not just Plumber Pretenders in Suspenders.
Gads, I can't believe I wrote that last part. I was going to let it die in my brain, but no, I had to type it out. - crashflow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Obviously true, otherwise, what's a plumber messing around with pipes for?
its gotta be drugs. - MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9i always feel taller after some mushrooms.
- ardenr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9About those mushrooms..
See, drugs work. Eat a mushroom and experience the world (on this 'level' at least) differently...
Grab some 'leaves' and become a raccoon... Never happened to me personally, but that would probably be a fun high.
Keep on defeating the evil ones who walk back and forth on pre-determind courses all their lives Mario. And don't forget people, he's doing it all for love. - alexkim804, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8it looks like zangief from street fighter... only more gay, in a village people kind of way, and less of a pro wrestler kind of way.
- pumacub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7WTF is with #4?
Seeing that picture has ruined my week.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go drink excessively in the hopes of serious memory loss. - bickdigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7what about the pills in Dr Mario?
that is some subtle mindforming. - but still not worse than the hedgehog who's obviously on speed. - dohidied, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Wow, I never read the real story behind SMB. That puts an entirely different spin on the last 20 years of my life.
- HAKdragon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6When I was a kid, my friends and I used to call those gram crackers. It wasn't until I was older that I realized that those were in fact, gigantic mushrooms.
- miggz06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5wow that just made my day i never new there was a story line to SMB
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That movie was so bad it was good. One of my favorites.
- idigital, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Checkout what happens when Mario goes on a mushroom fueled killing spree in Vice City! ;)
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3891165729134783717 - mindsnare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think the whole "Fat Italian Plumber That Kills Mushrooms and Turtles Goes On An Adventure To Save a Princess" is sinister enough
- ricree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I actually liked that movie when it came out. I imagine that being nine probably had a lot to do with that, but I still have good memories of it. Now, I just need to make sure I avoid ever seeing it again and ruining those memories.
- Asianwaste, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3In all reality, I think if Mortal Kombat or GTA never grabbed the spot light away, there'll most certainly be kids dumb enough to try to bust bricks with their bare heads and the parents would blame it on Mario. Hook or crook videogames are the new scapegoats for all parental short comings.
- CiXeL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3oh man. the burly mario. i couldnt stop laughing at that picture
- cheddar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"And despite the fact that he's a plumber, has anyone ever seen him do any plumbing?"
Just ask the Princess, she'll tell you that he lays the pipe down. - pumacub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That movie was utter ***** (obviously)...
But it was such a great opportunity, with the right artistic vision a Mario movie could be very interesting. - lwoj, on 11/06/2007, -0/+3As a kid I don't remember equating Mario eating mushrooms with drug use. I think a child's innocent mind would perceive this as merely cause and effect, as mine did. I think it says something about society that our minds make that assumption that it's a psychedelic drug reference. The Mario games themselves don't implicitly corelate his eating mushrooms to drug use. I think it's a good illustration of how any substance you intake has an effect on you, which is sort of how I perceived it back then. I think you could argue it presents a simple example to kids of the effect your eating/drinking/breathing habits have on your life. It wasn't until I was a little more worldly that I suddenly saw DRUGS in the Mario games. I guess my argument is that you can't really say the game in itself is communicating this in any way; it's just how you're interpretting the ideas that Mario presents based on your own subconscious leaps of logic. I think this is a valuable piece of knowledge for kids and doesn't really promote drug use in any way or imply that Mario is a drug user. The "evil" is a construct of your own imagination.
- Spazkake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hmm...
- blaze03, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"4. This picture."
- Punch405, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All those crime shows I used to watch must have been looking in the wrong place for all those dead bodies..
/Hudson Bay? - blaze03, on 10/12/2007, -0/+110/10, I logged in just to digg your comment :)
- Namco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Man what a great article. I feel really bad for goombas now (another racial slur). Good points there and I especially love the stuff from awfulart.com that the writer "borrowed"
- rabidkumquat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+37) Super Mario Bros - The Movie
http://www.nintendoland.com/home2.htm?mario/movie/mvposter.htm - flamingbird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1if the fcc had anything to say about it, yeah
if barry bonds had anything to say about it, he would tell mario to take as many anabolic "muscle enhancers" as possible to experience rapid growth with the quickest results. - Edkim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That really made me laugh.
"Despite what Nintendo thinks, there are Italians in America who are capable of saying "It's me, Mario" without adding the letter "A" to the end or beginning of every single goddamned word."
Hahahaha, and the chuck norris-like drawing of mario, priceless. - SilentSpyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This explains why I hit my bandwidth limit.
- Artifishalfish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They seriously thought too hard about this.
Just because we have no innocence left and believe "Mushrooms = Drugs" from being in a world of druggies and stoners doesn't mean Miyamoto had any thought of drugs when there were mushrooms.
What, would Mario drink milk and grow big? - crashflow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1do you accept-a coins?
- patch6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It seems that site doesn't have a print of it, so, my mistake. It should be though, since it's one of his more popular works.
- agent0014, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd really like to know who's responsible for #4 (the Burly Mario)... dying to know if there are other drawings done like that... freaking hillarious!!
- wallakoala, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I accidentally dugg you down when I meant to digg you up, but I just wanted to say that that picture is so true...
- kdnewton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I only recently noticed this as well, while playing "Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door" for the Gamecube. When Mario responds to people in conversation he salutes as a nazi would: arm pointed upward at a 45 degree angle, fingers extended. Mario is a nazi.
- stuff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2There is a lot of things that are wrong with Mario. Goombas represent black people and Mario would be the white man that jumps all over them trying to keep them down. Eating the mushroom makes him think he's all big and bad. Smoking a leaf makes him think he can fly. Sniffing some stardust makes him think he's invincible. The flower. . . I think that's just like a burrito, gives him gas.
But the thing that bothers me the most is the whole relationship with that slut Peach. That woman is playing with Mario and his emotions. First of all, how stupid would she be to keep getting kidnapped? She's not getting kidnapped, she goes over to bowser willingly to please him sexually. But she's a Princess, she likes to see people fight for her. So before she leaves to go give Bowser his moneys worth, she finds a way to send Mario a message telling him she needs his help.
And how does she get Mario to come? She keeps offering him sex. Read this letter I found "Dear Mario: Please come to the castle, I've baked a cake for you. Yours truly, Princess Toadstool "Peach"" Obviously the Princess doesn't know how to bake a damm cake. But Mario knows that by "Baked a cake for you" she is referring to being nice and ready for him. So Mario leaves whatever plumbing job he's doing and off he goes to the Mushroom kingdom. And of course, he finds out that if he wants to get laid,he's going to have to save her yet again. He doesn't understand that if she seriously needed help, her father would send a full army to get her and Koopa wouldn't be able to do much. - patch6, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Handre deserves credit for the artwork featured in that article. That work and others by him can be seen at: https://www.awfulmart.com/index.php?crn=210
- Chilllllion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thank you for adding this, this was the funniest thing I have seen all week. That goomba is crying agonizing tears of unmeasurable sadness. I feel for it.
- mysticmcj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, well the mushrooms were based on Fly Agaric (Amanita Muscaria), which has a rather notorious history.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amanita_muscaria
One of the most interesting effects reported of those who have taken Fly Agaric is a distorted sense of size, and exaggerated physical actions, such as jumping.
And in the spirit of the holidays...
http://www.cannabisculture.com/articles/3136.html - thefaithful, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mario powers up with shroom, weed and leaf. It's obvious.
- Chilllllion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeh, I was wondering if the author was refering to the Hundon River. I live in new york and the only bay I know about is Jamaica bay. Maybe there's a Hudson bay somewhere else, maybe in his imagination.
- defoliateddigg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I love the game.
But I can only play it on computer - thefaithful, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0so when you punch and destroy bricks you are killing Mushroom people; freeing their spirits to go to Mushroom heaven?
