- bormon, on 10/10/2007, -25/+189Very well written and thought out list. As an owner of all three next-gen consoles myself, I have to agree with everything on the list.
So far I would rank the 360 as my favorite of the three, followed by the PS3 and the Wii in third. The 360 has too many great games to ignore, although I am on my 3rd replacement console, the PS3 is real solid piece of hardware, but lacks games, although it looks like things are really starting to pick up at a strong pace. The Wii is sort of a disappointment for me. The graphics suck, and the novelty wares off really quickly and I can't help but feel that I just bought a gamecube again. Hopefully deeper games will come out instead of all these casual mini-game collections. - estvir, on 10/10/2007, -10/+74Meh, I can live with disappointments (Example: PS3's price) and shortcomings (Example: Wii's online system) but the line I draw is games - if there aren't games actual quality games [that I want] I simply won't buy once hence why all I own is a 360 though I had a Wii but quickly rid myself of it.
I'm /considering/ getting a PS3 sometime next year.. but yeah, so far the 360 is all I need (Halo3, Mass Effect, Eternal Sonata, etc and the ton of quality games already available).. but yes, for the most part that blog post seems mostly fair and true. - terminalpariah, on 10/10/2007, -5/+64Gotta disagree on the Wii Points vs. MS Points. Wii Points correspond directly to US cents. If a game costs 800 Wii Points then you know you're spending $8 USD. What's 800 MS Points worth? $10. This is deceptive and unfair.
As far as having a balance of points left over after purchases... it doesn't bother me, because there's always stuff going up on both platforms that I want. - SpongeBad, on 10/10/2007, -17/+73It's funny, actually. With all the complaining about the PS3 online, you'd think it would be the console to piss me off the most, but the reality is, it's the one that seems to have the most consistent experience. My 360 gets the most use (mostly due to XBox Live), but the PS3 experience is actually surprisingly solid and gets better with each firmware update. Coming up with a list of six things that pissed me off about the PS3 was easily the hardest of the three consoles. I went to six items because I couldn't narrow it down to five for the 360 and Wii.
- Paroparo, on 10/10/2007, -7/+56Looks fair enough to me, and I'm about as anti-Sony as you can get without foaming from the mouth.
- boberto, on 10/10/2007, -13/+57I thought we killed this "Wii is just as powerful as the original Xbox" thing already. It's been shown to be more than twice as powerful as the old gamecube. It's just that the games for it have all been crappy ports so far, unable to show off its capabilities. Hopefully this winter games start looking like they were meant for next gen.
- jason469, on 10/10/2007, -8/+40MORTAL KOMBAT!!!!!
Fanboys will duke it out in here, guaranteed.
Fatalities will include: The Ring of Death, a player uses his 360 to give the opposing fanboys 3rd degree burns. The Big Behemoth, a player uses his PS3 as an over-sized paper weight to beat apposing fanboys. The Strangle, a player uses his Wii's control to choke out apposing fanboys. - NSMike, on 10/10/2007, -2/+33Dugg for "Here watch a Bluray while we make some games."
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -8/+36Wow, I actually agree with almost everything on that list. Though some are stretching a bit... I could care less how big my power brick is for the 360, and I don't think the lack of a USB port on the back of the PS3 is a big deal.
- AJH16, on 10/10/2007, -3/+30I also own all three consoles and agree whole heartedly with the comments. Personally, much to my own surprise, the PS3 is my favorite (I have been a Sony hater for the longest time.) mostly because of how open the hardware is in comparison to the others. The HDMI is really nice and while there is a small selection of good games, they are, as the article said, very good. I'm a geek at heart and the different stuff you can do with the PS3 is nice and Sony did a good job making a stable platform. That said, the XBox is amazing for useability and does have a very nice game library that can't be ignored and you don't have to be a total geek to really appreciate it. The Wii is my least favorite (and I work for a Nintendo related press site) because the games for it are allmost all very trivial in nature. Zelda was great, Red Steel was a disappointment, Metroid Prime 3 is amazing, and if I liked fighting games, then Brawl would seem interesting, but other than that, there really isn't much. Don't get me wrong, I still like what Nintendo is trying to do and I think they are doing a very good job of getting former non-gamers in to the market, but much like I feared, they are leaving those of us who like something with a little more substance than Warioware or Mario Party hanging.
- YDKCooKiE, on 10/10/2007, -11/+36Well thought out - although, I do challenge the "no included rechargeable batteries" bit. The reason I say this: you've got to take apart your PS3 controller to replace the battery in it when it dies, this isn't an issue with Wii or 360. Both use AA batteries as their standard, which, rechargeable sets of AA batteries can be had on the cheap at most stores, rather than buying a proprietary battery. I personally think this was the better design choice in this sense.
- MechaZain, on 10/10/2007, -6/+30"It’s no secret that the Wii remote was originally going to be an accessory for the GameCube..."
News to me. Buried. - footbag01, on 10/10/2007, -14/+38If you complain about the size of the power brick, then you should complain about the PS3. Not that any should matter... My receiver weighs 50LBS!!! Maybe RROD should be in there twice.
Totally agree with Xbox hard drive... But I hear that it will be required with many future games. I'm glad I didn't buy a core.
PS3 had a bit of the spit in your face arrogance factor. We have the best console... All other consoles suck... Here watch a Bluray while we make some games.
Wii is definitely graphily poor, but I also think that all of their controllers are a bit limiting. - acid0426, on 10/10/2007, -9/+31YOU'RE an IDIOT.
- hokie47, on 10/10/2007, -19/+41I put my PC first and everything else at a distant last.
- lovedaddy, on 10/10/2007, -5/+26Well, I've not owned a 360 - but i did borrowing one from work for a few weeks. These are a few items I would have added to the 360 list, on top of whats already there...
1. No HDMI port on the main console - yeah, its sort of been addressed, but its still only HDMI 1.2, and a connector that should have been in from the start. Analog should be dead already - going from Dsub to DVI was one of the best upgrades in terms of my PC usability, why would I want to stick using analog connects on my TV!
2. DVD drive - that thing is LOUD. I was playing Gears and my g/f asked me to turn the volume down, so I did. Few mins later she looked up from her book again and said "Could you please turn that down, its still far to loud" - nope, thats the DVD drive sound...
3. No industry standard wireless connect - why isn't it just bluetooth so any headset used with any phone or PC will work!
4. Memory cards, stupid price, crappy sizes - after I borrowed the 360 for the weekend, I wanted to backup my save games and what not just incase I should ever purchase one. However, a completely none standard memory card adaptor, and an overpriced card meant no chance. Even an SD card slot would have worked, but no.
In a year, maybe 2, I might go back and consider purchasing one, but as it stands, they seem to have cut so many corners in order to keep the unit price down that it would just frustrate me. - MasterThief117, on 10/10/2007, -4/+24The only thing I do not like about the 360 is the Premium has a 20 gig hard drive, which leaves about 8 gigs left for me to use. This is effectively the same amount of space my original Xbox had.
Actually, the other thing I am terrified of is my 360 dying. - KingGoonie, on 10/10/2007, -4/+22Oh yea, and frigging go to radioshack and get a battery recharger and some rechargeable batteries... I did and it came to like 10 bucks... and now I have a battery and recharger that can I not only use for my wii, but my digital camera, etc...
- CurlyDE, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19I may be a fanboy for this series ... but the new GranTurismo will be the reason that I buy a PS3. That is really the only reason that I purchased a PS2 and is currently the only game that I still play on it.
- HolyChimp, on 10/10/2007, -4/+21By the sometime next year there's no denying the PS3 will have a fairly nice line up of games.
- Optimaximal, on 10/10/2007, -4/+21Because Sony are the bastions of reliability, what with the PS2's flawless launch!
- aapala, on 10/10/2007, -5/+22No, I think you're a fanboy. And a douche.
- totorototoro, on 10/10/2007, -4/+20The Red Rings of Death (console reliability or lack thereof) kinda overshadows all the other bitches, imho.
- readme, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17The article was right on. Even the most hardened fanboy would have trouble denying the six faults presented about their console of choice.
- samdu, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15Couldn't. It's "I couldn't care less."
And on topic, I didn't think the lack of back mounted USB ports would be a big deal on the PS3, either. But it does bug me. It's a shame to have such an elegant, sleek piece of equipment in my entertainment center with a bunch of USB cables sticking out of the front of it. If they were back mounted, it would be much more visually appealing. The only time I'd use the front ports would be for controller charging. The rear ports would be for the EyeToy and an external hard drive. - estvir, on 10/10/2007, -4/+18Ok, I've listed some of the games which make a 360 a good purchase for myself and now I'll do the same for the Wii/PS3 because it seems I have to justify my comment to some random kid who says "HAHAHAHAA. ok."
Wii: SSBB and.. that's about it so far and it doesn't help that Zelda:TP was very disappointing, FOR MYSELF. Let me repeat that again, FOR MYSEL.
PS3: Killzone2, LittleBigPlanet, MGS4 and FF13.
I checked a fairly up-to-date list of exclusives for each and honestly, the Wii's list was embarrassing to read (See: 'FOR MYSEL'). But the current library for the Wii and PS3 are a complete joke, hence why I do not own either. Maybe it's just possible that I have different taste and do not care about another Mario rehash (No offence, they just aren't for me) and some RPG in some style I do not like, at all. - KingGoonie, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16Um... I thought he said he plays his 360 most because of the online... not his ps3.
- pt4117, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14No, I think he meant hopefully. Yeah the games *look* great, but who knows how they will actually play. I can't speak for bormon, but I don't judge a game based on screenshots. Hence the "hopefully" in most realists statements.
- fplouffe, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14As far as the wireless networking goes, some needs it some don't, so it can be argued both ways. But for the rechargeable batteries, if you don't buy them, you are going to used up how many disposable batteries? At what cost in the long run? And of course you can choose to buy rechargeable batteries, which would be the sensible choice in my opinion, that will add to the cost of the system. Now, everybody complains about the up front cost of the PS3 but everybody seems fine with the hidden cost that you can "choose" to add to the Xbox360.
As for the hard disk not being standard with all SKU, it force the developers to make games that don't rely on the hard disk. And that is what is dumb with the core. Oh, and they could have put a standard compact flash slot on the 360 instead of forcing the core users to buy those ridiculously expensive memory card.
I am a PS3 owner btw and I try to be the most impartial I can be. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14he is cribbing about the power brick you moron. he actually liked the design of the 360 the best. RTFA.
- hokie47, on 10/10/2007, -6/+19You can build a solid gaming PC for $800. And it can do other things like write papers, program, hell, go on digg.
PC:
1- Value
2- Value
3- Value
4- Value
5- Value
6- Value - roxya, on 10/10/2007, -4/+15Isn't it also true? What other console plays HD movies out the box?
- HolyChimp, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13Where do people get this 8 gig figure? I recently cleared off all the old demos on my 360 and have 10.2 gig free. That's with all the oblivion addons (and the shivering isles aint small at nearly a gig) and both R6V addons (about a gig and a half). So from that I can guess there's at least 12.7 gig that's usable.
I'm sure I read somewhere that it's 5 gig reserved for the BC, so that would be about right. - bCabulon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11"If you complain about the size of the power brick, then you should complain about the PS3."
http://img61.imageshack.us/img61/5882/dscn1631pz3.jpg
PS3 isn't much bigger than the Xbox 360. It doesn't have a stupid power brick either.
I liked the watch a bluray part of the comment though. - MasterThief117, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11I don't know where you shop, but I can get one for about 60 bucks for just the hard drive.
- samdu, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11I'm not sure when last you bought rechargeable AAs, but they've come a LONG way in the last few years. The first Rayovacs that I bought about three years ago, that I use in everything in the house that takes AA batteries, lasted over two years before becoming unusable. They definitely pay for themselves pretty quickly, hold a charge at least as long as a standard alkaline battery, and are better for the environment (buy fewer batteries, dispose of fewer batteries).
- chris9902, on 10/10/2007, -9/+18MGS4. As soon as that game gets a release date I'm buying a PS3.
- acid0426, on 10/10/2007, -7/+16Oh go on, opinions don't exist or anything.
- larsoncc, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Well, here's what sucks about ALL THREE consoles, all at the same time:
Micro-transactions that aren't really "micro" at all. - Murphious, on 10/10/2007, -9/+18You can choose to buy your car without seats too.. Doesn't mean it's a good choice..
The problem is that people by the "core" one without realizing how important the hard drive is. - BattleScars, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9The PS3's rechargeable batteries are meant to last years before needing to be replaced. Besides, PS3 users will probably be swapping their old controllers for new rumble-sixaxis ones in the near future.
- xXShadowstormXx, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12I agree, MasterThief (wonderful name btw), Microsoft really needs to lower the price of the 120GB HDD. $130 is outrageously expensive.
- chocolatetacos, on 10/10/2007, -6/+14And the Wii is nothing more than a PC from eight years ago with an awesome controller. Of course they're "personal computers"! They've got a CPUs, RAM, and hard drives! And they're made for personal use!
- AwesomeAndy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Or you could buy generic rechargeable AA batteries and a charger for ~$20 and use them on everything from a 360 controller to a camera to a TV remote.
- fadetoone, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8If the USB thing matters that much to anybody, you could easily only have one cable around the back connecting to a cheap USB hub, in the even you have several things you'd like to connect back there...
- HolyChimp, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9The 360 is the opposite... I can't get my credit card info off the damn thing!
- icoup, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Yeah really, and "Wii Points suck just that little bit harder than Microsoft Points" Why? Because you can't type in your credit card number with a keyboard? boohoo. suck it up princess. I'd say MS Points suck harder than Wii Points for exactly the reason mentioned above.
- Parkinsons, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9How much does a 360 cost? 400 + $50 controllers + $50-60 games... add that price to your existing pc and you have a fine rig.
- BattleScars, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Unreal Tournament 3, MGS4, Warhawk, God of War 3, GT5, Haze, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Metal Gear Online, SOCOM: Confrontation, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune....
Most of these will arrive near the end of this year or early next year. Start wishing for a PS3 in your stocking come Christmas. - inajeep, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I only have a 360 and Wii but the reason why I haven't got a ps3 besides the cost is the online play. It's the only reason why I continue to play any games is that I have a bunch of friends who like to play the same games I do.
