- godzillaWax, on 05/26/2008, -9/+53Wow, what the ***** (from the article):
"But it isn’t just traditional gamers who are flocking to Mr. Miyamoto’s latest creation, the Wii. Eighteen months ago, just when video games were in danger of disappearing into the niche world of fetishists, Mr. Miyamoto and Satoru Iwata, Nintendo’s chief executive, practically reinvented the industry."
Niche world of fetishists? Christ alive, way to categorically insult a ***** of people. - evolove, on 05/26/2008, -7/+40First person I thought of when I read the headline was Hayao Miyazaki... though I love Miyamoto as well.
- savantidiot, on 05/26/2008, -4/+35There is such a simple, consistent, accessible, joy in his games even casual players pick up on almost immediately. Its something that I've often wondered why it is so hard for other developers to capture. From interviews over the years, I think mainly it comes down to his perspective on things, and how it affects his approach on game design.
It makes me wonder if people taking notes on him in an attempt to emulate, instead shooting for result X, should step back to process foundation A. - bonjourmr, on 05/26/2008, -4/+20Nothing less than a genius of his craft.
- Elranzer, on 05/26/2008, -2/+16Kinda coincidental, as in the 1990s it was said that more American children recognized Mario over Mickey Mouse.
- LegalizeGanja, on 05/26/2008, -5/+19I agree dude. If you were looking for a more direct comparison Hayao Miyazaki makes a lot more sense, and his work is more affecting in my opinion. If anything I'd choose him over Miyamoto, even if his characters are more iconic.
- ebbv, on 05/26/2008, -13/+26Wait Miyamoto is a Nazi sympathizer? I'm confused.
- laserblazer, on 05/26/2008, -9/+22Walt Disney was a pig. Don't insult the man with the comparison.
- kingmanic, on 05/26/2008, -8/+21Disney was a horrible man, hired immigrant animators because he could pay them very almost nothing. Took public Domain IP and vigorously defended it until it became Disney IP. Reduced all the moral of the fables, stories, and legends down to 'if talking animals are on your side, you'll win'. Right now, the only part of Disney that still connects with people are the Pixar movies. Miyamoto i nothing like Disney, Disney was a massive douche bag. A greedy cretin of a man. Miyamoto is just a guy who likes to make whimsical games.
- Jorin, on 05/26/2008, -0/+12Same here. I actually thought I was reading "Miyazaki" at first. Miyamoto kicks ass too though, and both are way more pleasant men than Walt Disney.
- mith167, on 05/26/2008, -2/+14While i love Miyamoto.... that article was one long line of fanboyism and man-crush.
And wtf niche fetishists??? - Doomsan, on 05/26/2008, -2/+13Miyamoto San FTW!
- Sererena, on 05/26/2008, -2/+11To those of you saying Miyazaki is a better comparison to Disney than Miyamoto, while Miyazaki makes beautiful films he just hasn't made an impact on his industry and pop culture in general the way Miyamoto and Nintendo has.
- TheSuperunknown, on 05/26/2008, -0/+8When I clicked the bury button I noticed it had plummeted to -11. Awesome!
- FFXIfrohike, on 05/26/2008, -1/+8"Eighteen months ago, just when video games were in danger of disappearing into the niche world of fetishists, Mr. Miyamoto and Satoru Iwata, Nintendo’s chief executive, practically reinvented the industry."
Hyperbolic much? - godzillaWax, on 05/26/2008, -3/+10The PS2 has sold over 100 million units. The DS has sold over 100 million units. The 360, in the last couple years, has hit 10 million in the US alone.
The Wii didn't somehow save a dying industry from collapsing into a miasma of fetishists. It became the hot item amongst people who wouldn't otherwise care about games. That's a pretty giant difference.
Not to mention the fact that although the Wii sells lots of systems, the people who own them buy far fewer games per system than any of the other consoles (don't believe me? investigate the relative attach rates). That's a sign as much as anything that the people that Nintendo has brought in to "save the video game industry from itself" are just as likely to move onto the next fad next christmas as not. - Jambi, on 05/26/2008, -11/+17I'd say that it was a pretty accurate statement; the newest generation of video game consoles was overpriced (but it was assumed that "real gamers" would shell out for one anyway), graphics were hyped as being the best way to judge a system (OMG, look at how many polygons the PS3 can move at once) and the idea of "fun" wasn't really on anyone's minds until the Wii was released and suddenly became a smash hit. Much as it did with the DS, Nintendo's managed to reach a market segment that most people didn't think existed (with the DS it was the supercasual gamer, now it's older gamers).
- inactive, on 05/26/2008, -3/+9I've always likened Nintendo to Disney.
I guess Shiggy is like Walt, except not as anti-Semitic. - trer, on 05/26/2008, -1/+7I can't think of another person who can succeed the genius of this man. When he retires, it will be a huge blow to the video game industry and hopefully Nintendo can find some way to continue his legacy with honor and dignity.
- Jpesci, on 05/26/2008, -4/+10Don't spread false rumors when they are *****. Do some research before you spit on the face of an amazing historical personality.
- outkaster, on 05/26/2008, -2/+8Umm we are talking about the Walt Disney of video games not anime. So it in no way is this realavent to Miyazaki.
- Xelseragoth, on 05/26/2008, -1/+7"The Gamecube nearly sank Nintendo (they only held on because of the DS)." You're kidding me, right? You obviously don't know that every single financial report from that time period stated that Nintendo was making more of a profit off of the GC than PS2 and Xbox were pulling in for Sony and Microsoft respectively. Yeah, it didn't do well, but they were not even close to being dead...
- inactive, on 05/26/2008, -5/+10Article should be about hayao miyazaki...
- Jpesci, on 05/26/2008, -1/+6I know it well, and it was nothing more than a backstabbing from the protestors themselves, greedy ones at that. Read "An American Original", or Neal Gabler's biography "Walt Disney".
- geartype2, on 05/27/2008, -1/+5I agree, although I think Miyamoto is a great designer, Disney set the standard for modern animation, and under him animation techniques were created that are still used in today's animation industry(2d and 3d). Not to mention his fantasies to create a massive playground for children that eventually came to life. Say what you want about the man, but by comparison all Miyamoto has done is create a few great franchises.
- Jpesci, on 05/26/2008, -3/+7You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Just about everything you just said is *****. Walt Disney often paid his animators more than he paid himself, and this is a fact. Disney was not a cretin, by any stretch of the imagination.
- Zippo, on 05/26/2008, -0/+4Well, Osamu Tezuka (the father of modern manga and anime, creator of Astro Boy, Kimba, Black Jack, etc) was honored with a museum in his hometown in Takarazuka, Hyōgo (Japan)...
Considering that Miyamoto also had a *profound* influence, I don't doubt Nintendo will eventually create a Miyamoto museum in Kyoto. - solid12345, on 05/26/2008, -3/+7No this is all crap. Disney may be famous for creating Mickey Mouse and turning him into the icon of the company, but the fact is Disney and his legacy company consistently created new characters over the years while Miyamoto keeps milking Mario and Link for all they are worth. Miyamoto is only brilliant at coming up with new ways to bring the same old tired characters into a new environment and retcon what little story or plot they had to begin with. He has also failed to ever come up with an actual personality for his characters instead relying on them muttering "woohoo!" or staring at talkative characters blank faced. The only one true time someone tried to actually bring a life to these creations was done by Squaresoft in Mario RPG.
- TheKingInYellow, on 05/27/2008, -0/+4at least he had a point. i'm not sure what yours is.
- CyberStriker, on 05/26/2008, -5/+8He was also anti-semitic and extremely paranoid, according to what I've read.
- chaosblade77, on 05/27/2008, -0/+3Because none of the big games for any other consoles are from respected franchises right?
I mean, Gears of War 2, Grand Turismo 2, Halo Wars, Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy XIII and various others are not sequels or are from well respected franchises and are completely original right? Right....?
I'm not a Nintendo fanboy or anything, but it just kind of frustrates me when people act like Nintendo is the only company in the game industry that thrives off of franchising. Just because they've been around longer and people still enjoy their IPs doesn't make it bad to continue making the games. - Axim, on 05/26/2008, -1/+4yep miyazaki has been likened to disney for a long long time, it's more of a apples to oranges situation with miyamoto here
- Sererena, on 05/27/2008, -1/+4Cripple the industry? How do you mean?
- Flummoxer, on 05/27/2008, -1/+3Miyamoto is no Walt Disney.
- nickert0n, on 05/26/2008, -0/+2Agreed, definately a major contributor to my upbringing, now was it positive or negative ? lol
- inactive, on 05/27/2008, -0/+2I don't think I can trust you... *looks at display picture*
- ImpoliteAndEvil, on 04/06/2009, -1/+3I read something about how in the 90's Sonic the Hedgehog was more popular with children than Mickey Mouse. Some of the kids didn't even know who Mickey Mouse was but were very familiar with Sonic. I wonder if the same goes for Mario? Either way, I think Yuji Naka and Naoto Oshima deserve some recognition for Sonic the Hedgehog in the same manner as Shigeru Miyamoto.
- chaosblade77, on 05/27/2008, -0/+2I agree that you can have good graphics and a good game, but you are wrong on a lot of your other points.
First of all, the Gamecube was more powerful than the PS2 in terms of raw power. The PS2's graphics engine was capable of moving more polygons though, it was just a hell of a lot harder to do because of the complexity of the hardware. The problems with the GCN were issues stemming from the N64 era. They primarily had issues with third party developers getting good games out since those developers were already close with Sony after some poor decisions made by Nintendo in the previous generation. Based on prerelease figures analysts actually expected the GCN to come out on top last generation.
As for the Wii, it's not that third party developers aren't making games for it, it's that they simply aren't trying to make good games for it. Look at the vast majority of Wii games, it's all shovelware that looks and plays worse than GCN games even though the Wii is clearly capable of more. PS2 didn't have the shovelware issue because it was harder to write games for. Developers couldn't give a game a tiny budget and get it out in a couple of months and profit after a hundred sales. With the Wii (and GCN) they can do that. That's why most Wii games suck, there is no incentive to make good games.
Sadly, most third party developers realize that a lot of Nintendo's original core audience will be less likely to buy a good third party game than a good first or second party game. For that reason, they think they can profit more off of lots of small budget games with few sales rather than one or two good, big releases. Based on my experience with Nintendo consoles, it's all in advertising. I was much more likely to buy a well advertised GCN game I'd heard of than a game that I saw simply got good reviews. - DirtyRoboto, on 05/26/2008, -4/+6Does this mean that Miyamoto is a nazi aswell? Ok! bad headline.
Miyamoto san also created "tin can alley" and the blood pressure machine at the fairs before any of you start flaming the Wii.
- dragoonkain, on 05/26/2008, -2/+4I think Miyazaki is much more directly comparable to Walt Disney than Miyamoto anyway. Ghibli Studios is more like Japan's Disney than... Nintendo.
- asskicker32, on 05/26/2008, -0/+2Miyamoto built the Wii?
- dodgyd55, on 05/27/2008, -0/+2the title of japanese walt disney has all ready been taken for a while by Hayao Miyazaki
- asskicker32, on 05/26/2008, -0/+2I too, had to do a double take at the name, because I thought it was Miyazaki
- cesclaveria, on 05/26/2008, -1/+2you really like to troll Nintendo related stories, if you dislike it so much may be you could uncheck the nintendo section on your profile.
- ButchersBoy, on 05/28/2008, -0/+1Legend.
- MsArtGeek, on 05/27/2008, -0/+1You do know that Walt Disney also did character design, and that video games are (wait for it) animated?
Have a drink of water and breathe while all this new information sets in. - cnot3, on 05/26/2008, -1/+2At least with the PS3 or xbox 360 you don't have to buy some stupid $60 accessory for half the games that come out.
- whiteguysamurai, on 05/27/2008, -0/+1What about Yu Suzuki?
He's been in the industry longer and has come up with many innovative games and inventions. - petemorley, on 05/28/2008, -0/+1Weird, I didn't realise Miyamoto was a racist, sexist right-wing extremist. Guess you learn something new every day.
- TheImaginator, on 05/30/2008, -0/+1I could agree with that title.
Perhaps with his dungarees, white gloves and Mickey Mouse voice Mario is very similar to Mickey Mouse. -
