- MouseCircus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+76It's probably just a gesture of goodwill. I doubt Kutaragi would want to work for/with Nintendo, anyway.
- betterth, on 10/12/2007, -7/+80Just because the young diggers don't remember past the final three years of the PS3 doesn't mean that Ken has always been a failure. His recent actions are not indicative of his career.
This man singlehandedly drove the Playstation to fame and fortune. He is a legend in this industry, and amazing visionary who drove two consoles into gaming history. Perhaps he saw too far for the PS3, perhaps.
Nikolas Tesla was also hailed as a visionary, then later tossed aside when the public disliked his newer creations. Are we no better than the populace a hundred years ago? Tossing aside legendary men when we believe they no longer suit or /best interests/? - Diggtatorship, on 10/12/2007, -6/+68if by 'controlled' you mean he would be fetching coffee and danishes for Miyamoto, then count me in.
- Gir53457, on 10/12/2007, -6/+52Inventors don't always make perfect inventions. The guy who designed the game boy also came up with the virtual boy.
- Tenlow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35crimsonalucard: Actually I think the Wii is alot closer to the cutting edge than you might think.
I mean really, you can use the Wii controller as a sword. And swords have big cutting edges. Sometimes on both sides. Also ninjas use swords. And ninjas are as cool as it gets. So the Wii has that going for it too. - crashflow, on 10/12/2007, -6/+33He was part of nintendo before the whole Play Station thing. Sony should worry if he does join.
- donatj, on 10/12/2007, -4/+30People are usually more loyal to money and less loyal to companies than you'd think
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27This is a simple Japanese cultural thing. In a way to not disgrace Kutaragi, this would be a response by Iwata. It does not mean it is a serious offer, but rather a gesture of politeness. Kutaragi is very well respected in Japan and one failure leading to his resignation would not be something people would want to shun him over.
- innocentsinner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23He could always grow a bitchin' 'stache and pretend to be a guy named Ben Butaragi.
- betterth, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26So the inventors, upon their first bad egg, should be cast aside, ridiculed and have their careers destroyed?
The Virtual Boy creator is another legend destroyed. The creator of the single greatest handheld ever made. Without that man, there would be no Nintendo DS. And yet, another case of a man being cast aside because of one mistake. - Dihuko, on 10/12/2007, -10/+32But do we REALLY want Kutaragi with Nintendo? If he is controlled, yes. He is known for being a great visionary, but some things like the PS3 don't turn out right. However, if he is controlled, he probably would be great for Nintendo.
- saska, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23This strikes me as a very polite, Japanese thing for Iwata to say.
Nothing more. - GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23Well it goes both ways, the Gamecube was a flop without Kutaragi on the team. I'd say if he joined Nintendo it would be great, the two leaders combined.
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19And I thought playing Sonic on a Nintendo console was weird...
- Jcespino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16"Sez?" Really?
- Gir53457, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15For those of you who don't know. The SNES was going to have an optical drive add on developed with Sony, until they ditched them for Phillips then ditched them and the whole idea all together; Which left Phillips with the CDi and a rights to key Nintendo franchises. Thus gave birth to Link: The faces of Evil and it's evil twin brother the Playstation.
- Leo55, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13The truth is, Ken is a engineer/geek.
He is not someone who can decided if pumping in millions in a chip is important.
He just wants the powerful hardware like every geek does.
I can see it already.
Ken working on hardware, Miyamoto on the software.
2 untamed geniuses, being controlled by Iwata. - betterth, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15@Gawtmilk
And the Wii was a raging success without Kutargi.
Or are you arguing that Wii's rampant success is a direct result of Kutargi's PS3 sabotage? Perhaps the plans for this union were laid years ago ...? - Gir53457, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16The next Game Boy from what I hear is going to be bitching. And the Wii is actually pretty cutting edge despite the graphics potential.
- Blandyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Don't forget, us pirates use swords, too.
For once, us pirates and you ninjas... we agree. - shutz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10My main problem with Kutaragi has to do with all the boastful and obviously inaccurate things he's said over the past few years. Sony's success with the PS1 and the PS2 went to his head, and I'm afraid that if he went to Nintendo, he could hurt them by continuing to say really stupid things.
I think the best thing for Kutaragi would be for him to either start a new company or buy one that is only a pale shadow of what it once was (SNK, perhaps?) and show that he can take that company to the top (or thereabouts). Only then can he be taken seriously again. It should also teach him some humility, something he seems to sorely lack.
The only thing that might cause me to want Kutaragi at Nintendo is if he has a workable and quick solution to the Wii shortage. But I don't see how he could help in that department. - djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9You Nintendo fanboys often forget that Kutaragi was directly responsible for some of the success of the SNES. He designed the sound chip, which was head-and-shoulders above anything else available at the time (and still holds up well, even today).
- directive0, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9While I think comparing Kutaragi to Tesla is a mismatch of dramatic proportions, I do agree with your point.
- echonull, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"like Odysseus single handedly defeating the cyclops"?
Reread your copy of the Odyssey. He didn't exactly drive a stake the height of a man into Polyphemus' eyeball solo.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyphemus - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7give em kaz hirai instead
'this new game is based on real japanese history!!
.....strike Bowser's weak point for MASSIVE DAMAGE!!' - noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Will he join Nintendo soon?
Short answer: No.
Long answer: No, he won't. - Davey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@donatj
I think you are referring to the US, not Japan. - dugbay, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@LavaHot
"a DS with surround sound, a Gameboy that can read your mind"
How would a portable system work with surround sound? - Retuobak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yeah, this is not happening. There will undoubtedly be a part in his contract with Sony that states he can't work for a competitor within a certain timeframe. You can't just jump ship and join the competitor when you've been in a position like that.
- ReyBrujo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wasn't this a Babelfish mistake? From NeoGAF, it appears it was bad translated. Apparently the original article says Nintendo has no intention of hiring him.
- dugbay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Its to early to tell what is going to happen. This is just a rumor with no source. Kutaragi is still on the board of sony. he is just not holding a position. A board member of sony would never join Nintendo.
- drill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I have a friend who's a big Nintendo fan, and I can imagine his confusion as he reads this."
You need to come out as a Mario-lover, hardgayjapan. Be true to yourself! - Jeffler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Actually, no. The Playstation was an addon to the SNES. Think Sega CD. Obviously it would have to be completely reworked for it to be a standalone console, psy.
I'd love to see such a thing happen. Iwata controlling him, while he works on the hardware side? He'd do a lot of good. His problem with sony is he called he shots. Nobody would say no. - NKras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You could almost make this a haiku.
- drill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is great news! We'll play games with AWESOME graphics on a SNES pad *-*
- DivineDart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Kutaragi probably wont do it he might still hate nintendo for the whole thing they put him through over the snes cd add on. That was the reason playstation was born after all.
- dman99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can't wait for the Wii grill! Kutaragi rocks!
- LoganT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I personally think this would be awesome. The innovativeness of Nintendo with the graphical power of Sony.
- ZWarren69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This will not happen.
- ZWarren69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This was just a goodwill gesture. Nintendo, would also have to wait awhileeeee to hire him, as I am 100% sure Sony has him on a long non-compete contract.
- toastman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When I first heard Kutaragi was leaving sony, I thought way back in my mind I wonder if someone will pick him up from the other companies. It would be hilarious if they did. Although maybe thats what nintendo needs is a way to make more powerful hardware. Nintendo is the opposite spectrum of sony.
- retard75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That would be interesting.
Maybe more of his talents will come out in an environment as creative as the one that surrounds Nintendo and all they do. - psyonide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wasn't the original Playstation created from Nintendo-designed prototypes in the first place? I don't see what's so "visionary" about continuing the work Nintendo began, then later abandoned.
Granted the PS2 was all Kutaragi and he deserves credit for that. - untzboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I really doubt Ken would do this. I think he took all the competition personally, I think everyone did, in the beginning. I did, and I was but a fetus.
- NiGHTSNY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1davey's right.
In Japan, many workers put the company they work for before the family they support. - Chode2235, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@b-dizzle:
it would cost $800... - Gir53457, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The migraine inducing lights said it was bad.
- b-dizzle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I agree. While I'm not sure this will really happen, I think the setup you describe would be awesome. I mean, the Wii is great, but what if it you combined it with the power and media capabilities of a PS3?
- edkopp4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, that's Kaz Hirai. Kutaragi is famous for such things as "4D" and many others.
- TDR25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As I said before in a previous topic, Ken was in the right place at the right time which is why the PS brand was successful. Sega overpriced the Saturn(considered to be the better machine anyways), Nintendo didn't want to give the developers any freedom and avoided the CD format, and the PS stepped up and took control. I remember how shabby both the PS1 and PS2 were built at first and it's a lot of people that went through more than one machine(myself included), so I know that we can't say that Kutaragi's some genius engineer. The point I really want to make though, is I think Nintendo's just flexing some of it's muscle and bragging, I don't think they really want Kutaragi. I also don't see anything wrong with Nintendo's engineering team. They make good, affordable, reliable consoles along with great games. They're only problems are they refuse to step away from the "kid-like" image they've assumed over the years and third-parties want the most powerful hardware to cover up for their lack of creativity. Now that's not really a Nintendo problem but still.
