- jadenguy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+63I'm worried about the day that i get pwned at a WWII shooter by somebody who actually killed a man there!
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/12/2007, -4/+37This is just the sort of thing Nintendo is counting on - expanding into the non-gamer audience. If they succeed, then the Wii will easily beat the 360 and PS3.
They need a version of the Nintendo Fusion Tour geared toward the elderly, seriously. - Shorties, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23Does that mean you are an old person?
- Shorties, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18I really cant believe Senior Citizens don't play videogames already, I mean they are coped up in those nursing homes all by themselves in their rooms, they should do something besides knitting, hell there are gamers who live like that voluntarily. The Wii's new controller is really going to help those of the older generations understand how to play games.
- furiousmonk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Nothing says cool like AARP.
- dualscreenman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Now you know how others feel when you inject the bias of your fanboyism into a completely unrelated subject. Dugg. Friggin. Down.
- Shorties, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Nintendo should give Elderly Community Centers and Nursing Homes free Wii's, the elderly there would get into it, and might want to buy one for their house/room.
- mliving, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11My father-in-law is a very practical, money-saving, do it yourself seventy year old retiree.
In all the years of game consoles and gaming he has never once shown but a slight passing interest in video gaming. Never has he participated beyond watching.
Then I showed him the PS2's EyeToy. I know, before the fanboys start spewing, I showed him the EyeToy as an example of what the Wii is going to be able to do without jumping around in front of a camera looking like you fell off your meds.
He then found the current issue of Nintendo Power on the coffee table and starting reading about the Wii and then he found the part about Wi sports and Golf! That was it.
So we showed him as many videos we could online at the Nintendo Wii site and YouTube, etc. He was absolutely blown away.
So what does all this mean. His last comment as we were walking away from the computer was, "I'd like to try that!". Said the ery practical, money-saving, do it yourself seventy year old retiree about a video gaming system.
I'm certain Nntendo is on the right track. The only track to success. - zeiben, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7These playtesters were teens when they first started hearing about the Wii
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8My granny plays loads of PC games, she's ..uh.. 81, I think. She likes The Sims & ***** like that.
- frase, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I can't wait to play Wii Sports with my Grandma :)
t - Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9The new Nintendo Geritol Tour, featuring the soothing sounds of Neil Diamond!
- theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Neil Diamond? We don't want that young whippersnapper's devil music in our homes!
We want Glenn Miller! - dosle, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11The fact that Nintendo had a booth at an AARP event is pretty cool in itself.
- Sammy20, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6And when you beat her in a game of Call of duty, and then she dies while over straining her self playing the Wii.
Will you you smell the irony of the situation? - pexor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+40:11 : "Look at the smile on their faces."
The old dude totally hears the camera lady say that. Old people aren't retarded, he turns around and gives her a "What, ho?" Watch it again, his look is priceless. - theragu40, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6A good way to introduce them to videogames is with the Sudoku puzzles in Brain Age on the DS. My grandma (and probably many other elderly people) loves doing sudokus...I showed her how to do them on the DS, and she really enjoyed it. Ditto for my mom, who now plays the DS daily whenever I'm home from college. She would never have touched a game system before that, outside of playing tetris or minesweeper on the computer.
- nesdude, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5My grandma, who is 80 something, can own me in Tetris. Like, my high score doesn't even come close to hers. She still plays on the original Game Boy, too.
- Ellsass, on 11/05/2008, -3/+6He was on Family Ties, not Facts of Life
;) - chokeslam, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7don't digg me down
- Methodius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I fail to see what that has to do with anything.
- dadioflex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Shame that the poster on the front of the booth still shows a group of traditional 20-somethings. (I'm 40. My Wii is already pre-ordered online.)
- blackfett, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4am i meant to laugh at that :P
- goggleBOX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Then you will know how they feel 99% of the time playing games against their grandkids!
- rjc1187, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4probable! my gramp was in WWII, and he'd probably love playing wii.
- Methodius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2too late!
- ufonacious, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4i like it simply because that video gives one of the most accurate depictions of someone playing wii sports that i have seen so far. i could easily see both how he moved his wii-mote and how the game reacted.
- SixSence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it seriously amazes me how people can turn any topic in the world into something political or somehow relate it to to any other offhand topic just because it's what your interested in, or sparks a debate.
Relating gaming to the drama of the whole Michael j fox thing? (followed by bringing Bush into it of course) *applause*
What next?
me: "the sky is blue"
you: "not for long if bush stays in power proceeding this war for oil, directly fueling more air pollution" - chokeslam, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3if he was still alive :(
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And then you woke up?
- LittoOne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm totally into the Wii!!! I think it's a great way to get everyone into the game. Although, I do feel like my parents are going to take away my game time. I'm sure it'll be like, "Dad, it's my turn, you've been playing for an hour now. Don't you have work?"
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Some of the Wii promotional material on the web does show seniors playing. I guess it's a shame they didn't use that material...
- goggleBOX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Double that if there is a 5 year old grandkid hanging off them.
- ajtait, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Nintendo is brilliant for trying to market the non-gamer. I think the idea is quite revolutionary. Remember when computers were "just for geeks" . I think Nintendo's plan to target average Joe's with videos games is pretty much as revolutionary as making a computer that you would actually want to buy (The Macintosh). Plus, we all know that old people will pretty much buy anything :-D
- kayjay, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2@mliving
dude, you just spend 250$. but youre wife will love you for that (and your father-in-law) of course. - goggleBOX, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3Micheal J. Fox would teach you young ones the facts of life in Redsteel
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -17/+11I can't wait to play Redsteel with Micheal J. Fox :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1oh I'm so hurt
- EGOvoruhk, on 10/12/2007, -19/+9No, I just don't bathe
- Xarou, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1Who else watched the video for FFXII? At around 2 mins into it, the theme from FFVI played. Has anyone actually gone and gotten their copy of XII and played the opening movie? Is that theme actually there?
- fpillet, on 10/12/2007, -18/+5I pretty much doubt this will ever happen. Someone who fought WWII and who was 18 by the time (in 1939) would be 85 now (this is the case for my grandma, who had to flee when the conflict started). I'm not sure you'll see many 85'ers playing intense action video games. Especially given the manual dexterity it requires to use a controller (or kbd+mouse).
There are more chances you play against someone who fought vietnam, or any closer war (yugoslavia, the somalian debacle, gulf war 1 & 2...) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -19/+3The stupidity of the wii pre-release hype is mind blowing.
- Shorties, on 10/12/2007, -22/+6Whoops Digg me down...
- EGOvoruhk, on 10/12/2007, -28/+10Old people smell funny
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -44/+2you dig BrokenEmpires down because you can't handle the truth.
but even people who vote for bush like the wii.
