Loved that intro to sonic. - fluidfoundation, on 02/11/2009, -3/+57I haven't seen an "arcade" in years. Depressing.
- immatellyouwhat, on 02/11/2009, -1/+44Dammit Sonic you just had to start talking didn't you?
- tault, on 02/11/2009, -7/+45This makes no sense. A company that has been releasing constantly awesome sonic games, one after another, would have a giant income.
Dugg for hoping SEGA will finally fire their sonic team and get a competent one that can give us the simple formula of what we want. - tama00, on 02/11/2009, -0/+34The US government should bail out Sega and get us all new arcade games :D
- Haoie, on 02/11/2009, -0/+30They're still very common in countries like Japan.
But 110 closures is quite a number, - coyote1284, on 02/11/2009, -2/+30I balme Electronic Arts for everything.
- GTKashi, on 02/11/2009, -0/+24WHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSHHHHHH
- sirbeta, on 02/11/2009, -0/+19Really, this saddens me that Sega has fallen so far. I'll admit, I lost hope in Sega and Sonic Team many years ago, but they will always have a good place in my memories no matter how much they tried to milk my wallet with ***** Sonic titles in the end.
- TonyTheTerrible, on 02/11/2009, -0/+19Sega makes big money off of Pachinko games in Japan. No joke.
- LOGNATR, on 02/11/2009, -0/+19I miss arcades. :'(
- unrequited, on 02/11/2009, -3/+19I'll be completely honest, this is directly resultant of running the Sonic franchise into the ground (Sonic Werewolf) as well as making substandard ports of old games (Samba de Amigo) on the Wii, and generally pushing crap (Mario vs. Sonic), etc. Without quality control, they have no hope of selling to the heights of their former self, and no hopes of keeping their old fans who stuck through most of the Dreamcast debacle.
- michaelphw, on 02/11/2009, -3/+18Shame sonic went straight to hell
- Tenlow, on 02/11/2009, -0/+15To the fans, the dreamcast wasn't a debacle.
- KMartSheriff, on 02/11/2009, -0/+15*sigh* the Dreamcast was so ***** awesome.
- blindhammer, on 02/11/2009, -3/+17I blame Electronic Arts for not supporting the Dreamcast.
- Dacvak, on 02/11/2009, -3/+16So... No Dreamcast 2?
- helraizr, on 02/11/2009, -0/+12Time to make MAME cabinets.
I'll buy them. - rockforever, on 02/11/2009, -2/+14STOP MAKING ***** SONIC GAMES
- MikeEx, on 02/11/2009, -1/+11If this effects Skies of Arcadia 2. RRRRAAAAAGGGEEEEEE
- crossmr, on 02/11/2009, -0/+10They own arcades in Japan. Arcade culture there is very different from the western world.
The word you're looking for is "became" - Daemastrius, on 02/11/2009, -0/+10Sega does what NintenDon't
- Dacvak, on 02/11/2009, -6/+16I'm not against Sega or anything (in fact my first console was the Genesis, and I love it with all of my gaming heart), but Sega ***** deserves this *****. Seriously, they haven't developed a good game in almost a decade, with the exception of a very small few.
In a perfect world, Nintendo would stop being douches and start appealing to their core audience again. And then Sega would go the ***** out of business and get purchased by Nintendo. Then we'd finally get some good 3D Sonic games. - racketboy, on 02/11/2009, -3/+12Please tell me you're joking about the "awesome sonic games"
- hongkongjapie, on 02/11/2009, -0/+9Good thing the game industry is recession proof...
- inactive, on 02/11/2009, -2/+10Declare bankruptcy?
- coyote1284, on 02/11/2009, -2/+9"balme" WTF? what does a municipality in Italy have to do with EA?
*blame - a0me, on 02/11/2009, -0/+6I'm not disputing what you said about Sega and the Dreamcast, but Soulcalibur and Dead or Alive 2 are not Sega games (SC is a Namco game and DOA2 is Tecmo's).
- JigoroKano, on 02/11/2009, -0/+6Valkyria Chronicles is awesome. It's not making as much money as it deserves.
- pgouy, on 02/11/2009, -1/+7As much as i like my Dreamcast and most of the games you mentioned, Sega NEVER fully recovered after the DC burned and died.
After they lost the console battle for good and the arcade industry slowed as a whole, Sega ceased to glow as a star.
A shame, really. - michaelhood, on 02/11/2009, -3/+9I dugg you after reading your first paragraph, then undugg and buried you for putting the words 3D and Sonic next to each other.
- DigitAl56K, on 02/11/2009, -0/+5I bet people aren't dropping coin in the slots like they used to right now though.
- aphorizm, on 02/11/2009, -0/+5Sega in their prime were all about new IP. Many of the Dreamcast games that got greenlit were absolutely crazy. Nintendo have always been able to produce games with more polish, but they do too many franchise updates so they don't have the same capacity to surprise me.
Arcade games are the future. Sega will bounce back eventually. We've just gone through a period of really grey, nerdy games for the past 10 years. Now with all the new gamers on the Wii and the iPhone things are going to go in a totally different direction. Blue Skys shall return.
http://www.ukresistance.co.uk/2005/11/blue-sky-in- ... - poxonyou, on 02/11/2009, -0/+5Videogaming in Western countries is very home based, from PC games to consoles, but gaming in Japan is more popular outside the home, so handhelds and arcades are hugely popular. It's likely one of the reasons Nintendo was slow to online gaming and still hasn't implemented it well, and designed their Wii to be a system to play games quickly. I think Sony had the international market in mind with the PS3.
- reyoo30309, on 02/11/2009, -0/+5Why not? They bail out just about everything else. Time we gamers get a lil somthin.
- reyoo30309, on 02/11/2009, -0/+5They survived the Saturn, Dreamcast and countless failed Sonic titles but they could not survive the recession.
- coyote1284, on 02/11/2009, -1/+5Hey, you can't blame this on Jaleel White!
- mleh, on 02/11/2009, -2/+6I wish I could digg your comment a billion times.
- kuzotz, on 02/11/2009, -1/+5because arcades are really popular in asian countries such as Japan.
People there still want the social atmosphere of video gaming, and they're really fun and creative and innovative with the technology. You should visit one in TOkyo.
I goto one in fukuoka every now and then when I make a trip to fukuoka but I live in beppu. - inactive, on 02/11/2009, -1/+5Really, when is that gimmick game coming out?
- Ashkc88, on 02/11/2009, -0/+4Street Fighter IV is an arcade game that has graphics that looks as good as Xbox 360 and PS3 Graphics.
Fighting games honestly aren't the same on a home console.
Also, they use widescreens now in arcade machines. - MrChunks, on 02/11/2009, -0/+4You should have missed the build up to your comment and left it as it was. Comedians and comic writers don't say "And here's a joke coming up...".
- poxonyou, on 02/11/2009, -0/+4Their new parent company Sammy does. Pachinko is everywhere, everyone here seems to hate them aside from some unkempt hardcore 20-30 something dudes who line up outside these places in the morning if there's a tip they have a higher chance of winning. The rest are are usually dead but noisy as ***** because they all play fake busy sounds like people are winning.
- i4ybrid, on 02/11/2009, -0/+4Yes, remember Comix Zone? To this day, I still think it's one of the best games of all time.
- fluidfoundation, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3Ok, I'm game.
I play a bit of "frogger" in your mom's "arcade" nightly. Tell her to please cut back on her "traffic", its making it hard to get to the "lily pad". - pfhayter, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3Philistine, go play Halo or something. :P
If you own a PS3 you owe it to yourself to play "Valkyria Chronicles" , just sayin'. - acid_jazz, on 02/11/2009, -1/+4Dugg for clowning your own comment.
- a0me, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3The last dozen of Sonic games might not have been received well critically (i.e. they pretty much sucked) but in terms of sales, they've done well enough that Sega keep churning out Sonic titles year after year.
- soogy, on 02/11/2009, -1/+4With the exception of a small few? They've made a lot of great games in the past decade, most of which was on the Dreamcast, which I still consider to be far ahead of its time. Come on...
- MMO gaming on a console (Phantasy Star Online)
- Reinventing sports gaming (NFL 2K)
- Yu Suzuki's brillant Shenmue. Doesn't even need a reason. Simply one of the best games they ever made. It wasn't until Grand Theft Auto 3 that a game could even compare to its vastness and voice acting. Still waiting for Shenmue III.
- A new twist to fighting games (Soul Calibur)
- Jet Set Radio was weirdly awesome.
- Enjoy dropping acid? Then Rez is for you.
- Skies of Arcadia was a really fun RPG.
- Sonic Adventure was not the best Sonic game by a long shot, but it was definitely fun.
- Dead or Alive 2, the game known for having 90% of its code dedicated to breast physics. - mugrido, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3Valkyria Chronicles it's great.
